Good Considering the Budget and Contstraints.
jburtonprod-802-75902911 October 2022
I rented this movie for ninety-nine cents because I had watched the 'Rebel Without a Crew' series and wanted to see how the movies had turned out. If you don't know, this movie was shot for that series. All participants were given a $7000 dollar budget and two weeks to complete their film. There's a lot to like about this movie. The cast is good and they all totally get what the director was going for in his first feature film. There's some really good performances all around. There is a lot of craft displayed in direction, a number of good sequences, nice camera angles and good visual story telling. The opening sequence was well done and the twilight dance scene was charming.

Where the film falls short is the sound. It's pretty much drilled into new filmmakers that the sound is more important than the picture. There's huge volume jumps between the music an dialogue. There's also jumps in volume and quality of the audio during dialog scenes. A lot of this could've been fixed in post production and it really should've been. Even if it couldn't be done by the deadline it should've been done before the movie was released. Some of the special effects fall short but on this budget that is understandable. I'm sure he could raise the money on Kickstarter or GoFundMe to fix these problems and I wish he would. Josh Stifter is talented director and he has a good eye for talent.

Overall, it's a fun watch and good example for new filmmakers on what can be done on shoestring budget.

Funny, Creepy and Entertaining on a $7k Budget!
jorgito20018 August 2019
After watching El Rey's "Rebel Without a Crew" TV show, I decided to watch the 5 movies produced by Robert Rodriguez, on a tiny $7,000 budget similar to how he made his 1st feature, El Mariachi, and write reviews as I watch each one. I started with this one and have to say, it'll be tough act to follow.

In this movie, Director Josh Stifter managed to squeeze out elements of Horror, Comedy and even some decent FX. Even the acting was above average (I've seen more expensive movies look cheaper with horrid acting). Reminded me of early Sam Raimi. I see a bright future for Josh and hope to see more from him!

Needs more post-production

Cheap, Fast, Good: Pick two. I think with another week of post this movie could have had a little better sound design and visual effects without blowing the budget. Of course, cheesy effects are a staple of this sort of fun movie, so I can overlook that but what sticks out in this and much more in Grandma's House is the lack of environmental sound. Compared to traditional movies it takes you out of the moment sometimes.

It has a demons welcome vibe

The best movie I've seen so far in 2018! It's a wonderfully charming funny yet disturbing comedy/horror film. I knew it was a horror movie going in, which I love but was pleasantly surprised by how funny and original it was. Very well written and executed by all involved. My friends and I were quoting this movie the whole car ride home, a true instant classic. Father Gil's ad at the beginning was one of my favorite opening scenes along with him dancing and performing the exorcism to heavy metal music. Can't wait to watch it again and divulge into more film adventures from Josh and Dan.

The team did an amazing job on this flick. Acting is solid, script is funny, and the cinematography is fantastic. Crazy that it was made on a $7000 budget

Well worth a watch

Awesome indie horror!

Josh stifter's low budget masterpiece! Ingenious demonic possession special effects, strange characters, and a feature that incorporates his signature animation style! Where will father Gil go next? What wrongs will he make right? And what new and dangerous demons will he send back to hell?

Oddball horror that no connoiseur should miss!
strako7 October 2018
The song playing over the end credits sums this up perfectly: It's a midnight movie, as in a fun, bizarre movie you'd find yourself watching at midnight. Made for $7K in 14 weeks on Rebel Without a Crew, Josh Stifter made a LOT out of a little. When we first meet the main character, Father Gil, boogeying to death metal, it sets the tone for the oddball movie you're about to watch. It doesn't take itself seriously, the actors are hamming it up to sometimes cartoonish proportions, and it's a fun ride all the way through. While it focuses more on the strange cast of characters than the horror, the ending sequence is impressive considering the small budget. The only complaint for me is just sound audio issues, particularly with dialogue, but that almost feels part of the low-budget, grindhouse-y package. Get a group of friends together and have a blast.

A crazy ride of pure and addictive escapism
wildkaren8 October 2018
I haven't enjoyed a film as much as The Good Exorcist in a very long time. This masterpiece draws you into the new world of Father Gil, a likeable and enclosed character, who reveals more about his past - and current bizarre career as Exorcist Extraordinaire - as the film progresses. Amazing cartoonish gore and regular visually brilliant breaks from the standard film format keep the novelty and entertainment at its height, as it becomes more about the ride than about a weighty plot line. I cannot wait until the next film. Literally the only film in ages that has let me switch off and grin. Like the best films, you don't need to be heavy handed to have a lot of fun and it's clear that the cast, and team behind it, with the insanely creative Josh Stifter directing, never let the hard work get in the way of a great movie. Yeah, I loved it.

SO GOOD!

This movie is EXCELLENT!

Ever been with a group of friends and you guys all have an inside joke? It's that feeling all over again but toss in some nostalgia and great wordplay on horror tropes and that's how Josh Stifter wrote this masterpiece!

Give it a chance and you'll have a blast!

I want to see Josh remake GHOULIES or another 80's classic!

So much heart among all the guts
addy-9778131 July 2018
Expected gory and stupid fun humor, and I was not disappointed! But it doesn't end there, there's so much heart amid all the guts with some fun lines that had me pondering life itself afterwards. By the end I was shouting at the screen for my heroes! This stands on it's own as a little diamond in the rough, a cult classic in the making. Never thought Satan would make me laugh that much! Awesome flick Josh, Dan and crew! You've made something magical.

Silly, gory fun.
lucanistan30 July 2018
This is a silly horror comedy, with a flavor similar to Evil Dead 2, which is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. You can tell that everyone had fun making the movie, which always makes a film more enjoyable in my opinion. If you can watch Father Gil's opening dance sequence without laughing, I don't care to know you. I have to wonder what Nathanaelj83's motivation might be for such a negative review. Surely with such a harsh criticism of it, he must be an indie director himself, and his films must be indie film making at its finest. If he was motivated by personal feelings that he has about the director to submit a harsh review from behind the safety of his keyboard, that would really be pathetic and weak. A move that any honorable person with an ounce of self-reflection might look back at and be ashamed of. Honor and self-reflection aren't innate in some people I suppose.
