Could've been something more.
AfricanBro29 January 2024
It tries to have this sexual tension between the main characters all the time. They had no chemistry, they did supposedly have reasons for pursuing each other but it wasn't depicted in a convincing manner. Sometimes I liked it, sometimes I didn't. It had the potential to be something better. The only scene I enjoyed is when Cairo lit up a cigarette in the dark, that looked like something that could've been in a horror movie. The voice narration seemed over the top and unnatural. Felt like the movie was trying too hard. The narration also reminded me of Delores from Westworld.

Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman were okay but the movie wasn't the most captivating. It's a story that's been done before so it really needed to offer something different. But in the end feels pretty unremarkable and you'll probably forget about it as you leave the theatre. I didn't really care much about what happens with the characters and some of the conversations made me sigh and roll my eyes. I did think it was interesting where the movie took the story and shift in power dynamic between the two, but it could've been written better. Especially if you go and watch gone girl or thoroughbreds. It could've been a more captivating revenge story.

Disappointing
ameliassequence17 February 2024
I had high hopes. From the trailer it looked interesting and aesthetically pleasing but I was very wrong. Unfortunately by the end of the movie I was left feeling frustrated because, the main thing about this movie - the tension, it was non existent.

There was no chemistry between the main protagonists. Zero. And Martin's heavy breathing in Jenna's face was very uncomfortable to watch...

Jenna on the other hand... Oh God, where do I even start?? She was so stiff the whole time it was seriously hard to watch. I don't know when this movie was filmed, but she seems stuck in her "Wednesday" role. Yes, her character is supposed to be strong, opinionated, witty, charming, seductive... But she fails to deliver any of it! She doesn't seem like clever teenage girl suddenly shaken and intrigued by an unexpected new variable in her life, at times she kinda looks bored. Her narrating was good though. But like I mentioned, the main point of the movie, the taboo of the desire and magnetism between main characters, is absolutely lacking. It's almost cringe and uncomfortable watching their scenes of "passion and attraction"...

To sum it up - good idea, poorly executed. Shame.

Disappointing and vacuous.
rxzgt29 January 2024
I do enjoy when a movie's dialog provides its own review. This film was " overreaching without ambition." The pacing of the movie was horribly painful. It is never a good sign when I leave the action of the movie and find myself looking around thinking " I am sitting in a movie theater. " Martin Freeman is a terrific actor but the script absolutely failed him. His talents were so totally wasted. I found this to be hopelessly sad as I expected so much from the film.

The movie harps on the mediocrity of the protagonist and then tries to paint him as a villain. It just did not ring true. The script just kept missing; and, it was hard to keep pressing forward. With 45 minutes, or so, to go; I just wanted it to be over.

Maybe it should be called Miller's Downfall?
Boristhemoggy3 March 2024
A creative writing assignment yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student.

I note many poor reviews and I'm unsure why that is. The acting is great from every single member of the cast.

The dialogue is meaningful and well thought out.

The plot echoes what is happening around the world right now with thousands of teachers and students: some will get caught and some won't. But it's real and so it's great to see the inner workings of the process, by such great acting and story telling.

There's even a bit in there about how women in fact have all the power in the world, they just don't realise it.

There's an insightful comment too about how "We know where the line is and don't cross it." Except some do, and when they have it's too late to walk it back.

I was surprised at Ortega's depth of character acting, but in hindsight perhaps not a great distance from her Wednesday character.

But there's an interplay between her and Winnie, as power and courage shift between one and the other as the story goes on.

Great film, I liked it a lot.

Disappointed
quolzski3 February 2024
"Miller's Girl" left me thoroughly unimpressed as it unfolded with a disappointing blend of predictability and lackluster storytelling. The plot, rather than offering any refreshing twists, adhered strictly to clichés, making the entire viewing experience feel tedious.

The characters, unfortunately, lacked the depth needed to engage the audience emotionally. Their development felt superficial, leaving me indifferent to their fates. Even the supposedly dramatic moments failed to evoke any genuine connection or empathy, as the performances came across as forced and lacking authenticity.

The dialogue, a crucial element in any movie, was remarkably uninspired. It felt like a compilation of worn-out phrases and unimaginative exchanges, further contributing to the overall sense of mediocrity. I couldn't shake off the feeling that the scriptwriters took the easy way out rather than investing the effort to craft something truly compelling.

While "Miller's Girl" may have had potential, it ultimately fell short of delivering the depth and originality that I anticipated from a movie within its genre. It left me questioning why I invested my time in a film that failed to leave a lasting impression or offer anything beyond a forgettable cinematic experience.

Over Reaching without Ambition
nogodnomasters4 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) lives in a mansion by herself. Her parents are away and have been for a long time. She lives in a world of literature. Her one friend is Winnie Black (Gideon Adlon). They discuss men and losing their virginity. She suggests that Cairo take Jonathan Allen Miller's writing class. Mr. Miller is taken in by Cairo's far-reaching ability, vocabulary, and depth. She has read Mr. Miller's book which he wrote before he became a teacher. Since then he has fallen into mediocrity, teaching rather than doing. Cairo writes and submits a short story written in Henry Miller fashion about a girl named Alice who has an inappropriate relationship with Mr. Murphy.

The film is about a self-aware schoolgirl who knows her fantasy value and writes about things that she knows. There are numerous references to lesser-known books. It is well-acted but the writing is a bit self-consumed in its own ashes.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

Disappointing cringe-worthy wannabe Lolita-esque suspense-thriller
danieljfarthing20 February 2024
With its two leads and Lolita-esque suspense-thriller theme "Miller's Girl" shoulda been great... but debut writer / director Jade Halley Bartlett grotesquely overcooks it. Martin Freeman (married to Dagmara Domincyk - the best here) is a writer come English Lit teacher at a small Tennessee school with pal Bashir Salahuddin (good) where pretentious, angsty, arty, 'talented' student Jenna Ortega (hot rising star til THIS) falls for him and/or sets out to seduce him (with unwitting pal Gideon Adlon). Everything about Ortega's character (with her dire dialogue terribly delivered) is so laughably cringe-worthy it drags the whole film crashing down. A disappointing stinker. Flush it away.

A pretty good film when reflected a bit upon it
vmagrigjr5 February 2024
Miller's Girl presents a perspective of a romantic affair between a student (Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet) and its teacher (Martin Freeman as Jonathan Miller). It is a very ambitious and intriguing idea to explore, I really liked the plot and how it slowly unfolded, how the characters evolved and how eventually Cairo and Martin turned out to be complex characters that carried a lot of personal and professional baggage yet they connected and felt heard and understood thanks to their mutual interest in literature and writing. Now, obviously there's a lot more that's going on, more nuances, subtlety and delicacy and not to even mention the other "situationship" presented but it makes you wonder on another level... does love have limits? Is there such a thing as a forbidden love? Does even right or wrong exist when love is involved? Or, at the same time... is it really about love or is it something else?

Both Freeman and Ortega deliver good performances and it serve their characters well, but it sometimes felt during the first acts like they lacked that chemistry, that connection that was supposed to urge their attraction, desire, tension; that "I want it so bad that nothing else matters"; their interaction with other characters involved seemed more natural than when they were together.

Jade Halley Bartlett creates this motion picture with a sort of aristocratic dark fantasy visual language and score in mind which plays an important part in the production itself especially in certain scenes implying the ideas of mystery, of desire, even of the forbidden and the unacceptable - yet, it felt a bit all over the place and unnecessary at times because it created a few clichés such as the mysterious girl that comes out of a misty forest thingy and it just pulls you out of the story.

Throughout the film it seems to be an incomplete puzzle yet in such a good way because you get most of the pieces, but you also have to create the missing ones by yourself. The ending is arguably the most impactful and well made on this matter because even though an open ending is not reinventing the wheel, this time the final scene can actually be interpreted in such many ways, all of them viable and credible since, as earlier mentioned, the film was packed with many nuances and tones, hints and implies of what actually might have happened.

The film is pretty good when reflected a bit upon it.

Why is there no zero?
conniecan-3450717 February 2024
Yes, that is a serious question. Sometimes a movie is so bad that the only fair rating is zero. Zero, nought, nil, nothing. And here we have such a movie.

Starting with the writing, you have to wonder how anybody involved in the production/financing could think this was anything other than infantile. I can only surmise that those involved in financing this rubbish did not read the script and/or did not undertand what they were reading.

The direction I assume has faithfully adhered to the script. Accordingly, it it direction of such absurd and childish nonsense that you will be flabbergasted as you watch.

I do encourage you to watch this. And to keep in mind one of the real mysteries in cinema: how did it get made?

The Struggle
Tactrix17 February 2024
So this movie had all the features of a good movie, great actors, great story, fantastic writing. So why not a 10? Well, the issue is the end. See there's a buildup in this movie, it makes assumptions without confirming anything. And it does this quite a lot. However it feels wildly incomplete. Like they made a movie and then cut 20% of it out, and that 20% was the revelation of what was actually happening. And it would have been an amazing movie if they had left that 20% in, but they didn't.

Now the general feel of it is amazing, because it's atmospheric without meaning to be. I think it was written to convey each emotion with a specific place as a scene, and it really works.

8/10 great cast, plot and writing, it just comes up short with the ending.

Just Like That??
KFstudios200922 February 2024
"Miller's Girl" was a good film that I didn't have much complains about. Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman worked out very well in the film, the duo performing their characters didn't disappoint, everything felt organic and real. I did also like a lot how the two main heroes were so much connected, and the problem of "student and teacher love relationships" was showed on the highest shelf. Jenna Ortega as Cairo Sweet did deliver many good qualities, she was good at giving her character a dark tone and she did also show greatly the fantasies of a girl teen. Jonathan Miller performed by Martin Freeman as the teacher that falls in love with the student, was convincing enough. I have seen Freeman in better roles but I didn't really argue too much about it. He delivered what he needed to deliver, and I liked his development. The story was a good version of the Plot Summary on IMDb, just in a longer version. The story works very well until the ending comes. And yeah, then it comes. Did I watch the first part, and have to wait for a sequel, or this is it? Because after so many dramas, dilemmas and new courses of action, the ending came. And I obviously didn't expect it to be so short. It's rare that I say movies are to short, and this one is probably one of my rarest exceptions. So to say things short, I was just very confused. Yet many elements of this film were good to make the runtime acceptable. The camera work, as well as the scenography with beautiful landscapes and plants, did work. The camera angles and montages were nicely composed. The dialogues and script was surprisingly very original, yet sometimes they tried to hard to make it like poetry. Sometimes it failed, sometimes it fitted the scene. The music was ok, I guess, nothing I noticed in particular. I don't think it's much left to talk about. Ok film, I think it has mostly good sides, but it shouldn't have ended so fast.

Expected influenced by the 80's erotic thrillers new interpretation, got something else
gvlchev5 February 2024
To be honest, it's my first watch and I'm writing this shortly after I left the cinema, so maybe not the most objective opinion, but definitely left with with mixed feelings(mostly bad ones). It couldn't succeed in engaging me enough in the story to develop any sort of feeling towards any of the characters. Despite of the talented cast(saving it in a way from a total crash after the first half) and ambitious, some would even say pretentious, beginnings, for me, it felt short in building a solid foundations, which could have been a mean of explanation for what happens in the end.

But on the bright sight, it has a nice soundtrack(not sure it's always used well enough - which is also not so bright. Excuse me, had a bad day).

Let's not be all critical. It has moments that have the capacity to intrigue you, but in overall I couldn't sense the integrity. Expected more of 80s erotic thrillers' vibe. Definitely not a thriller and on the erotic part, pretty sure I felt more interested in Winnie and Miller's wife than the Jenna Ortega's Cairo(which I guess wasn't the writer/director's initial intension.

Some better examples from last year: 1.of peculiar teacher-student relationships - About Dry Grasses 2.of successful writer wife-unsuccessful writer husband - Anatomy of a Fall

Ps- the smoke doesn't help to build mysteriousness.

Overreaching without ambition
ananas-2270714 February 2024
In my opinion this is one of the worst movies lately released. Main reason behind is that the whole plot can be described in 2 sentences and is quite "flat" in a way that there are no peaks of any excitement a good movie should provide. Even though both of the main actors did a good job individually, there is no chemistry between them and most of their interactions were painful to watch. Another thing is that all of the characters were written wery unrealisticly which made them unrelatable in any way. Cairo (main girl) is supposed to be arty, mysterious 18 year old, but is more like bratty 12 year old who uses big words (we have all been there). Miller is also written like he is supposed to "move us" with his averageness but is giving local loser and weirdo vibe. The worst character written is Miller's wife who was totally emotionless and unrealisticly written. All of them are strictly physically motivated for everything they do and it's hard to relate to either of them in any way. Conversations they hold with each other, especially Cairo and her friend, are very uncomfortable and not in an "expected" way since it is erotic film, but in a way that they all look forced and as far from any reality as possible. Even though there are many other problems with this movie, my conclusion is that I don't see the public that might enjoy this movie since it is too childish for adults and theme is obviously not suitable for younger audience.

"The felicity of youth has been ripped from me like skin"
scipio_storytelling29 February 2024
This movie is not a easy story to tell or watch. As I'm walking into adulthood, I felt compelled to.understand why this had such poor ratings, when you have Jenna Ortega as the main character (which made a massive impact in Wednesday). And the thing is... did I enjoyed it?

I think it's not for me to decide if I like or hate this movie, because that's not the punchline intended. It is simply a reflection of what it feels to have your "youth ripped from you like.skin". You are just the viewer of this personal relationship, you don't get to judge it. It's art, and that's enough to remain as such.

Maybe one of the worst movies of the year
2Yung4This3 February 2024
Feels bad Netflix movie why it's in theaters and Maybe one of the worst movies of the year only watched for Jenna

Who even green light movies like these? There isn't much of a plot in this movie and not even any kind of vulgarity, seduction and sex scenes for people who enjoys movies like these. I read the script before movie came out and it's bad but it had some scene which didn't made it to big screen I don't know why they exactly cut those scenes those parts could've saved the movie.

There are thousands of books, novels, and other media which needs to be turned into shows and movies but they chose mediocre stories like this who even write this? Are they proud of themselves even I wrote better stories then this and I'm a nobody. Hollywood really thinks people would watch anything and they are wrong people are walking up and not consuming trash anymore this movie doesn't belongs in people's mind it belongs to trash.

Even after so many failures they still makes movies like this they are really insane thinking movies and shows like this will be success and they don't learn from their mistakes.

At least this movie was short because sitting through this movie was really hard. 0/10 for me for wasting my time.

Day Dreaming Literature Girl
meinwonderland25 February 2024
A poetic cinematic experience that follows Cairo Sweet, a student fond of literature, looking for experiences to write for a writing assignment, and her teacher Jonathan Miller, in a story full of blurry lines.

The social commentary in Miller's Girl is accomplished in a tasteful gothic dreamlike style with a script that gives just enough information to let the audience fill in the blank spaces.

The film's greatest asset is depicting desire as something that has to be realized yet deludes its owner every time its reach is closer to fulfillment, making the situation ambiguously complex. This is rendered brilliantly throughout the film, especially in the dialogues the protagonist has with herself. An open door that lets us in in the melancholic naivety of what it means to be young and flawed in a world that values perfection above all, yet it is found nowhere, and that crave for independence from inherited beliefs, and the natural thrill and anxious ache for the unknown and uncharted territories.

Under-ambitious & un-thought provoking
calyxsteele19 February 2024
Being able to operate a camera does not make you a good director. Having your characters perform meta analysis of problematic source material does not make you deep. Being "controversial" for the sake of being interesting is neither controversial nor interesting. This trope filled, pulp fiction, power dynamic rehashing never captures my interest. I kept looking at my watch to count the minutes it was stealing from me and continued to be upset that it was taking so many without ever achieving a salient point. It earned a 2nd star for proficient lighting, and I really wanted to figure out why this art house schlock was being peddled at all. I am tired of casual pedophilia and of adult women being cast as high school students. As the movie was rolling I kept finding myself wondering if the dialogue was directly ripped from the pages of a rejected letter to the editors of a pornographic magazine, and was disappointed to find out it was an original screenplay. Do not waste your time, even if you are into messed up power dynamics there are better made and more thought provoking pieces of cinema or literature available.

5.2 on imdb think I was watching a different movie
jrjasonrussell21 April 2024
First off hands off to the entire cast. They are quite good in this film and the script especially when the main characters quotes dialogue is really well written. I was expecting something rather poor from the 5.2 review on imdb but I honestly think most people who watched this didn't get the point the director was making.

Jenna Ortega plays a fairly unbelievable character let's get that out there not only is she a siren but she has a plan and is incredibly clever, well if you know anything about 18 year olds this is quite far fetched. Martin Freeman is the naive muse in an Luke warm marriage flattered by the attraction and attention of a young good looking fan and it spirals in a rather prectible way but what makes this better than most fatal attraction movies is his conduct I don't want to mention spoilers in my reviews but he got burned for a thought.

Adolescent garbage.
paul-214828 April 2024
I started reading about this movie a year ago. It has been getting a lot of press, and I think mostly because the two stars are both great actors and it's implausible that they decided to make this film. It's a first time writer-director and she is in way over her head. Freeman is a great English actor but his southern accent comes and goes. I think I was 30 minutes into the film before I realized he was supposed to be southern. Jenna was so brilliant in Wendy, but now I am wondering if she can play a character that is a real person. There seems to be a pandemic of student teacher relationships in America currently, and it's worth exploring, but this script is juvenile. It's one of the worst scripts of the year. It is also not sexy at all. It seems like a high school girl tried to write a sexy play who has never been in love.

Also the two do absolutely nothing to hide an inappropriate relationship. Freeman's teacher would have lost his wife and career if found out, but they appear in public like they are lovers.

I just felt cheated after looking forwards to this film for several months.

Why so many people stayed on the surface?
uyhpufc22 February 2024
If you believe this movie was just another movie about an affair between a student and a teacher , you got it all wrong , and I'm sorry but I'm not going to take the time to explain you why, you will have to figure it out on your own. And you will thank me for that later if you do.

I think the movie was brilliantly written and directed, and I can only applaud the determination of her writer and director who certainly had to go through a lot of convincing and step back but never renounced or had a lack of faith that her message was important enough to not give up. So thank you Jade Halley Bartlett for sharing it with us and not keeping It for you alone.. You have been heard.

I Still I feel sorry for her that unfortunately the public and critics are apparently the disappointment in this movie , staying on the surface of it, just seeing the protagonists and their struggle but never really took the time to reflect on what it really meant, what the subject really was about. Or perhaps they just can't? In this case bo offense taken.

I can only hope that later, this movie will be use to teach a new wave of writer/director on how it is possible to talk about our human condition without being boring, that it is possible to explain some souls searching concept and still captivate, and that movies are not always about pop corn entertainment , but sometimes , once in a while , to teach us something about ourself - or for some - remind us something about ourself.

Stereotypical behavior leads to a thrilling relationship
malmevik771 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Miller's Girl

George Bernard Shaw wrote the infamous line, "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." I've always had a problem with this because assuming teachers are failures is very unfair. However, in the movie Miller's Girl we see the stereotype brought to life. Mr. Jon Miller, creative writing teacher at a Tennessee high school, is existing because his one and only book was criticized at the time of publication.

Mr. Miller is portrayed as pretty average, but lights up when one of his students, Cairo, shows true talent as a writer. But the audience sees another side of Cairo when she has trouble completing an assignment about personal accomplishment. She is advised to write what she knows. What follows is a disturbing tale of a high school girl's crush, on her teacher, that descends into a form of madness.

If you're a writer, then you write. If you don't write, then you're not a writer. Possessing the strength and confidence to pursue your passion in a field where reviews are subjective, and can be harsh, is an admirable trait. Mr. Miller's one and only attempt at writing caused such a trauma, the audience is left to wonder why it hurt him so much. The portrayal of failure leading to abandoning a passion makes one wonder if it was passion all along, or a need for validation.

This movie is very thought provoking, and not just about writing. Rejection is very painful. When acceptance unexpectedly comes calling, it is not surprising when one seizes onto the source of acceptance, whether appropriate or not. The rejection / acceptance theme transcends the topic of writing into other relationships, which reveals itself throughout the film.

I highly recommend this to anyone who feels that their dreams were shattered. My advice? Don't give up. Embrace your passion for yourself, and not for others.

Boring and concerning "teacher student" romance
aprilsfriendorin24 February 2024
There's no question that the teacher student romance trope has been overdone. However, I thought that maybe this film would bring something new to the table. I was very wrong. There's so much wrong with this film, but here are the highlights:

1) Dialogue: This is some of the cringiest dialogue I've ever heard. I was a teenage girl once, and teenage girls don't talk like this. The graphic descriptions of sex were also cringey. Just so bad, all around.

2) Story: The storyline leaves much to be desired. It was so slow, pretentious, and boring. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, and was left sorely disappointed.

3) Messaging: Perhaps the most egregious part of this film is the mixed messaging. Instead of making it clear that the ADULT TEACHER is the bad guy, it blurs the lines and implies the student is a villain. I'm tired of movies that present teacher student romances through a lens that's sympathetic to the teacher. They're repulsive, as is this.

Overall, a really bad movie. Not even fun bad. Not worth a watch.

Same old cliche
micheletroxel17 February 2024
I had high hopes for this movie but in the end, the same old story told with narration that didn't fit. It never really got its footing. There wasn't enough depth in the characters and then the ending felt rushed and unrealistic. The idea was there to create a different kind of "teacher gets involved with the student" storyline but this didn't stray far enough from that. And that's too bad because that kind of acting talent deserved a better script. I kept waiting for something deeper and more interesting to happen but it never did. I kept trying to decide if I could bail but powered through. I won't be giving this one another thought. Wish I hadn't spent the $6.99 to rent through Amazon.

Cringy but good
mrficher21 February 2024
First and foremost Jenna Ortega is an excellent actress. She has range. Now did the movie remind me of American Beauty and Lolita? Yes, but the cringy parts were a breath of fresh air because most movies nowadays play it safe. And that's boring when that's all you see. Obviously what they did was wrong but it does happen in real life. Which is exactly what art is supposed to do, copy and explore real life situations. All actors played their role well in this new take on an age old story. It won't win any awards due to selective outrage but it was a good change from the norm. I recommend that all of appropriate age watch this movie to be reminded of what it feels like to watch a movie that evoke emotions in you whether it be good or bad.

rotini-5258622 February 2024
Has to be one of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life . Who cares about any of these stupid characters anyways ? I certainly don't. What is the point of this whole entire movie anyways the first half hour nothing happens just ridiculous little girl flirting with an old man that makes a lot of sense it's hard to imagine how this ever got funded and how this was ever released into the theaters the only actor that was good in this movie was the drunken wife besides that just an atrocity of a movie that should never have been made just a horrible display of nothing absolutely nothing wow amazing.
