Matt Cross chews the screen in Peyton Place
safenoe3 August 2020
Why hasn't Matt Cross got his own series? As Nat Halpin, he really chews the screen big time, and you can feel the menace of his drug dealing grabs you through the screen. It's no surprise Matt has a theatrical background, as he's able to project authority to the audience big time. Mark Nutkins's cinematography is to be commended, especially in the scene introducing Nat.

Much of the episode focuses on what happens in Peyton. Vineeta Rishi and Assad Zaman guest star, with uncredited appearances by Eve Murray (surfer), Bernard Sparkes (solicitor who keeps motionless and says nothing) and Amanda Dryden Walker (passerby).

UK justice is pathetic!
Fargomoviecritic9 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
How many people need to do drugs, sell drugs, steal whatever and they get off? Also, all these criminals would kill Vera and any other police if they wanted they couldn't stop anyone. If my criminals in the US and there are a ton were to setup in Northumberland, there is no way anyone would stop them, unless the Armed response tram actually did their job..so funny watching these UK police try to stop people with no lethal force or weapons to protect themselves. I keep watching though.

Vera's latest investigation
jarrodmcdonald-122 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Writer Paul Matthew Thompson goes out of his way to over-complicate the plot, so of course one figures it would be too simple for the adolescent victim, Caden Lennon, to have been murdered by one of his drug-dealing bosses. Probably someone else has followed him to Peyton from Newcastle estate then killed him for reasons other than drug dealing. When we first glimpse Caden's younger brother, he is being questioned by Vera, and it is obvious he is an emotional wreck. So it seems likely he will directly tie into the killing.

However, there's no earthly reason for the younger brother to commit fratricide. It's as if the writer thought it would be more dramatic, and ironic, if Caden was offed by the one he loved most and had always protected. Maybe if the younger brother had been schizophrenic or had been possessive of Kayleigh, the girl that knew both of them, we could buy it. But killing Caden in order to gain the respect of drug dealing thugs just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Perhaps this plot would've been better if the cop in Peyton was the killer. After all, he's looking out for Kayleigh (bending the rules and tampering with evidence behind Vera's back). So he'd have a much stronger motive to murder Caden Lennon.

Since this episode is entitled "Cuckoo," we expect the guy whose home has been taken over by the drug gang to play a more central role. But he's largely peripheral to the action, and gets abruptly killed off mid-way into the story.

DS Healy seldom has anything to say during the investigation scenes. Vera does almost all the talking when they're interrogating suspects and witnesses. Actress Brenda Blethyn is required to handle much of the dialogue in these scenes. She's undoubtedly the star, playing the title character; and she's a pro, of course. But it would nice if Kenny Doughty could be given a bit more to say and do as DS Healy; he barely gets a chance to act. All he's doing is following Blethyn around, which can't be too challenging to perform.

Typically when they give him dialogue Healy makes statements that are only half-right, so Vera can correct him and seem far more superior. But after four years of working together on cases, DS Healy would have picked up some of Vera's tricks and he'd be a lot more intelligent than the way they are writing and portraying him. Plus given Vera's personality, she wouldn't tolerate a dummy, and Healy would be just as focused as she is on these cases.

Do I detect a switch?
Sleepin_Dragon22 January 2019
You have to hand it to those involved in Vera, in its ninth series, and genuinely better then ever. The show has never been light viewing, it's always been very deep, engaging viewing, but one thing it's never been is dark. Cuckoo somehow felt very new, very fresh, the story very dark, an area I've never felt this show veered into before.

I'm all for great stories, great casts and location, trust me, they are all huge ticks in the boxes for each, but the biggest and best element here is the performance of Brenda Blethyn, it's taken for granted by many, myself included, that she I naturally be awesome without question, but here she proved she can go up a notch. She was simply incredible, her energy, passion, rage, I'd go so far as to say this is the best she's been in the show.

I wonder if the show will continue in the same way, I do hope so.

One of the best, and there are many brilliant episodes. Huge thanks to all involved. 10/10

One of My Favorite Vera Episodes
geekalert-9451424 June 2022
Aside from the usual Vera shenanigans, this episode stood out to me as one of the best episodes of Vera. I did not figure it out until the very end. I like that they showed that Vera was affected by this case. This gives credence to the idea that it sometimes is the ones that you least expect who end up committing the crime.

Cuckoo
Prismark1024 January 2019
A teenager decked in nice designer clothes is found stabbed to death in the small seaside town of Peyton.

He is identified as Caden Lennon who had been in care with his younger brother in Newcastle.

Peyton is a town with growing youth delinquency and a drugs problem. Vera thinks that Caden might had been dealing in drugs and some of the local dealers are regarded as suspects.

Vera finds one drug dealer is particularly nasty and sinister.

These days with Vera anyone can be a suspect. Again the guest stars have their moment under the police lights.

However I did think the actual reveal was left field. Maybe something dark in one character was hinted at but it did not come off for me. Even the explanation from the murderer as to why made no sense.

TOO MANY CUKOOS IN THE NEST
fionastaun27 January 2019
The new series seems to rush along with first a crime, lots of "looking up" back at office, enter new villain, go back to office and lots of looking up and officers standing at Vera's door "Ma'am, I found something." The stories are still solid, but the slow unfolding of the characters with Vera shambling at home without cooking, has been replaced with a "piling up of bodies and suspects." Needs a script tightening up,and more Vera shambling.

Can' t wait for the next episode.

Like how each clue leads to another and good old police work and digging finds more evidence. The Uk seems to have an unlimited supply of amazing actors. Even the small rolls the actor manages to create a memorable character. This Vera character is motherly, great detective, thoughtful, hard working, and always thinking all thanks to Brenda's acting skill.

Usually love Vera but this was pants
kevin_barry-2822023 January 2019
Unforgivably boring, stupidly ridiculous and unbelievable ending. That ending just does not ring true especially not for the reason given. Brenda seemed the only person trusted to carry a sentence. Hope next weeks is better.

Unremittingly grim
boxyfella18 March 2022
This has never been a favourite. It is a really grim tale, with nothing to lighten the mood or provide light relief. Even the locations are not as scenic as usual. The identity of the killer is a surprise and the motive is not really believable.
