Giancarlo Esposito is filling the hole left by his late friend Andre Braugher in Netflix‘s upcoming mystery-drama series The Residence, which recently resumed production. As reported by Deadline, Esposito will take over the role of White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter in the Shondaland series. Braugher was originally cast in the role and was set to lead opposite Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) before his untimely passing on December 11, 2023. This isn’t the first time the Breaking Bad alum has stepped in for Braugher. Over 25 years ago, Esposito succeeded the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star on Homicide: Life on the Street after Braugher exited the NBC drama ahead of its final season. The pair then starred alongside one another on the 2000 spin-off television movie. “I couldn’t be prouder and more honored to be stepping into Shondaland’s The Residence for someone that I loved and respected and cherished in Andre Braugher,...

Giancarlo Esposito is taking over the male lead in Netflix’s Shondaland drama The Residence following the passing of Andre Braugher.
Braugher, who died Dec. 11 following a battle with lung cancer, was tapped last February to be the male lead on Netflix’s Shonda Rhimes drama The Residence, starring opposite Uzo Aduba. The White House murder-mystery started production before shutting down amid Hollywood’s dual strikes. Braugher had already completed filming a lot of his scenes on the series, which was scheduled to resume filming last month January. Esposito’s casting means the scenes Braugher had filmed will be reshot on the drama from showrunner Paul William Davies (Scandal), which has continued production amid the recasting.
Here’s the official logline for The Residence, per Netflix: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner. The Residence is a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs...

The entertainment world was recently dealt a heartbreaking blow with beloved actor Andre Braugher passing away unexpectedly at the age of 61. Braugher was best known for his roles on shows like "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine." Before the actor's passing, he had been working on a new TV show for Netflix called "The Residence." It will now serve as the actor's final project. Much remains in flux, but we know quite a bit about the show already.
The eight-episode series hails from Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, with Paul William Davies on board as the writer and showrunner. It is based on Kate Andersen Brower's book "The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House," but interestingly, it's said that the show will only use the book as a jumping-off point, so it won't be an outright adaptation. According to a February report from Deadline,...

The late Andre Braugher’s now-final project — Shondaland’s comedic murder-mystery The Residence — remains unfinished thanks to a shut down sparked by the WGA strike months prior. Although the series had been gearing up to resume production, Braugher’s death Tuesday raises significant questions for the Netflix series’ future.
Four episodes of its eight-episode order were shot during the early days of the writers strike more than six months ago, Deadline reports. While the series is slated to resume shooting Jan. 2, it’s unclear if that date will stick, as producers must now figure out how to proceed without the actor.

André Braugher has died. The two-time Emmy-winning star of series including Homicide: Life on the Street, Men of a Certain Age and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was 61.
Braugher, whose first film role came alongside Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the Ed Zwick-directed Glory, died Monday after a brief illness.
While Braugher peppered his résumé with comedies, many will remember him for his ferocious portrayal of Detective Frank Pembleton in the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street. Put him in “the box,” sweating out and outsmarting crime suspects in the interrogation room, and you were looking at a weekly dose of tour de force acting, as good as it got on television during that time. He won an Emmy for that show he starred in from 1992-98. His wife, Ami Brabson, recurred as Pembleton’s wife on Homicide.

Shonda Rhimes, creator of “Bridgerton” and the upcoming prequel series “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” is known for creating powerful screen stories that center women and a diverse range of characters of all gender, racial, ethnic and sexual identities.
But, as Rhimes began to focus on ensuring her Shondaland productions were equally diverse behind the scenes, she came to recognize a key role in that mission: the line producer.
“You look around the set and it’s great to have a Black director or a Black writer and Black actors and then the entire crew doesn’t really represent America or the world,” Rhimes said in a virtual symposium with Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria, chairman of Netflix films Scott Stuber, filmmaker Tyler Perry and researcher Dr. Stacy Smith. “If you have a line producer who is on board with what you are feeling, then your crew is completely different.

Netflix has achieved gender equity in leading on-screen roles, a new USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative report reveals.
Between 2018 and 2021, 55% of all Netflix original films and series featured a girl or woman as the lead or co-lead, per the study, with films and series from 2020 and 2021 signaling notable benchmarks for year-over-year representation for women and people from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. Leading roles for people of color also saw an increase in representation with nearly half (47%) of the streamer’s films and series featuring a lead or co-lead from an underrepresented racial/ethnic group in 2020 and 2021.
There are still strides to make, however: the study found persistent gaps in representation in Latinx, Middle Eastern/North African, Indigenous and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander communities, as well as characters with disabilities.
