She can feel it in her bones. Despite all appearances, Em is convinced that Logan had a confederate working in the dastardly plot to torment her for a six-year-period of captivity. The search is on for clues to those classmates at the Barrett House.
In the opening scene, Em interviews a prostitute who was one of the Barrett House kids. No cigar. But another clue emerges when Em discovers a number on a file retrieved by the BPD sleuth Tommy. The number leads Em and Tommy to a trailer park where discover a dissolute bum named Lester Nowicki. After Lester leaves the trailer park and goes on the lam, Em and Tommy track him and discover the mysterious woman associated with the number on the file. It turns out to be Valerie Chandris, the birth mother of Em, who knows the identity of her daughter and has press clippings on the walls of her trailer.
The main plot of episode one focuses on a domestic terror gas attack on FEMA, which was carried out by a lone nut, who killed and stole a canister of the gas. A hotshot investigator, Special Agent Julianne Gunnarsen, is brought in to head up the search team that includes Nick and SA in Charge Crown.
Em continues to struggle in adjusting to civilian life. She has become a drug user and a drinker, yet is committed to spending time with her son Flynn, who has been in therapy. But she lives in a dowdy apartment, and the boy does not seem comfortable in the squalid living conditions. Flynn spots a mysterious truck departing the area, and Em senses that she is being stalked while on a trip to the grocery store. With Alice recovering from a miscarriage and taking a job at the hospital, the pressure is on Em to get her act together. Already, she has rejected her brother Jack's overture to join AA.
The episode closes with uncertainty about the appearance of Em's birth mother, as well as the young terrorist who seems unrelated to the Barrett House kids.
