lovely little sci-fi short
cherold14 November 2018
The first of the Star Trek Discovery "Short Treks" was a cute thing based in the world of the series, but Calypso is something else entirely; a short film on a deserted Discovery 1000 years after the series ends.

It's basically a two-person play between a castaway and a disembodied voice, and it's a lovely, melancholy thing.

My question is whether it will tie in with the series? Will the final episode explain what lead to the circumstances of Calypso, or will they just drop this. Time will tell.

A really enjoyable short story
Markus_Beer11 November 2018
Unlike the main series, this little story is actually good. It has heart, is cleverly built and well acted. But what's even more important for me is that it feels like real science fiction because it almost casually deals with topics like loneliness, longing and being human. In my eyes that makes this short film a far better star trek product than the ridiculously confused war series it's supposed to promote. I wish the second season were the same: less loud, less superficial, quieter, more thoughtful and smarter.

Homer's Odyssey in the 33rd century
mpuskas-7720322 April 2019
A well-done, futuristic take on a portion of Homer's Odyssey (if the title "Calypso" wasn't a dead giveaway). Craft is the Odysseus-analogue, adrift in space, rescued by the evolved AI named Zora. Much like Calypso and Odysseus in the Odyssey, Zora has fallen in love with Craft and keeps him on the Discovery but Craft longs to return home to his wife and child.

Classic sci-fi that could have fit into any universe
jsabo15 November 2018
While this started out a little slow, and with too much of the horror genre that Discovery seems to love embrace, by about 4 minutes in, all of that is over, and we're left with a story that could have been written by Asimov or Clarke back in their prime- a wounded warrior winds up being rescued by the AI on a starship that's been abandoned for a thousand years.

Other than the sets, there's nothing that makes this a Star Trek story- it's literally just a 18 minute exploration of what happens when a lonely AI and a human get thrown together in a situation where neither can leave.

And that's wonderful.

This might not be breaking any new ground, and it didn't deliver any didn't-see-that-coming plot twists, but for me, that's just fine.

If you're coming to this looking for Trek, you'll likely be disappointed.

But if you're willing to watch a classic sci-fi story, played out with a Trek budget, you're in for a treat.

Michael Chabon Creates a Fantastic Twist on the Odyssey Classic "Calypso"
babayer10 November 2018
Very well-written and paced with good Star Trek and sci-fi elements in general. I look forward to more from Michael Chabon.

Literally the most beautiful star trek piece ever
reg_merlin23 January 2019
This episode is so different and good.

It could even be the start of a whole new star trek serie. Because now i imagine myself he will come back later as a star trek captain and take this ship under his command and continue the saga.

-This is a good episode.

I liked the episode, even if i still don't think a ship can be functional after so many years .This is what the fans want so desperately,a story from the future, not from the past. The episode is not too original but it is something about a new thing, not about rewriting old things,i'm so tired of that neverending prequels.

I like the distant future .
humpty_dumpty-1250611 November 2018
I'll give 10 stars to this episode because the writer had the courage to write something from the Star Trek future ,and not from the past. The episode is a combination between Lexx ,in a straight version and Andromeda. The only thing which bothers me is the strange love story and i hope i will never see a weird love relationship again, because they are a real cliche these days, even if the Oscar critics are obsessed with them.

It's getting better,but...
dj-wookie10 November 2018
Well, Michael Chabon makes his debut in the Star Trek franchise with this episode (he is one of the people behind the new Picard show,in case if you don't know). The episode is better than the first one, but,i expected to see something more different ,with more mystery ,in the X-files style,i wanted to see a ship or a city,or even more information about the Federation, because this is the first trek (semi) episode which is taking place in the future ,beside the ones from Star Trek Enterprise ,about Enterprise J and Temporal Wars.Offcourse, there is the story of the old Spock from Star Trek 2009 , but everything takes place in the past.I think the love story is a little too forced, the ship's A.I. evolving to think like a girl, even if she is alone in space for about 1000 years is ridiculous.I espected something more darker, but once again, everything is for girls and ..delicate guys only.Another thing very wrong in this episode are the DSC circus costumes, for god's sake dear producers, before making a space or a military uniform please ask an old B5\DS-9 fan or a guy from their creative team how they should look like, because they are EXPERTS.Just like the team behind Star Trek Enterprise ,those guys don't know how to create things which are looking similar with the ones from the other Trek series.Discovery is the worst incarnation of a Star Trek series even if the series is getting better.By the way,i like they know what was wrong with the previous music scenes, because i don't think RnB music will resist in time as a classic style, actually i think it is the only music genre which will be completely forgotten so stop whining about why the Klingons are looking like a bunch of heavy-metal rockers or like some classic D.J.s,because i assure you , Sinatra,Michael Jackson,The Beatles ,Nirvana or Jean Michel Jarre will be remembered .

On of the best star trek episodes
latevirta20 February 2024
I love this Calypso episode. What did happen when Discovery was deserted 1000 years before Craft came? Did Craft find home? If he found the way back home, was his wife and child alive? Whst adventures he experienced during his way home. Hopefully we'll see Star Trek: Craft spin off.

Or even a short miniseries.

This short track series is absolutely very interesting to watch. Not too much actors In It and very serenity episodes. Not seen all of the episodes yet. The first episode was also good. Would like to see that queen In the future In some episodes of Star Trek: Strange new worlds. Anson Mount is good choice to act Captain Pike.

Just more of the same train wreck then.

Is anyone else sick to the back teeth with Alex Kurtzman's generic Hero's Journey?

The fan base will never, ever forgive Moonves and CBS. They wanted to make a new star trek, they ended up killing the franchise.

It endured for 50 years. Look at what you've done.

It bored me. More of same.
badooback11 November 2018
Although it improves a little compared to the previous mini episode, the truth that leaves many doubts. I expected a more exciting development and an amazing resolution, but instead we have a mannered version of 2001 HAL 9000: Space Odyssey trying to make friends with the human protagonist on duty. Nothing is satisfactory, nothing is one hundred percent credible and everything seems accelerated to reach the end as quickly as possible. It bored me. Unfortunately Discovery is a product that does not seem to know where to go or what path to take to improve and it is still the WORST series of the entire franchise.
