Last year’s Best Narrator Emmy contest was a real clash of the titans as three-time champion David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”) attempted to fend off famously charismatic first-timer Barack Obama (“Our Great National Parks”). Now that the former U.S. president has one victory under his belt, he is immediately seeking a second for another Netflix series, “Working: What We Do All Day.” This time, he faces an entirely different slate of challengers who could very well make this outing even more difficult.
Those competing against Obama for the 2023 narration prize are returning nominees Angela Bassett (“Good Night Oppy”) and Morgan Freeman (“Our Universe”) and category newcomers Mahershala Ali (“Chimp Empire”) and Pedro Pascal (“Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World”). Collectively, the professional actors have previously vied for 14 Emmys across 10 categories.

After watching the Disney+ docuseries “The Imagineering Story” in 2019, Warner Bros. executives approached Leslie Iwerks about documenting their studio’s history.
“They said, ‘We’d like you to tell honest stories about us,” recalls the Oscar-nominated director, granddaughter of Mickey Mouse designer Ub Iwerks.
Three years later, Iwerks has two docs out about Warner Bros.: The first, “100 Years of Warner Bros.,” which pays homage to the output of the studio over the past century, debuted on Max in May, the same month that the series premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The director’s sophomore documentary for Warner Bros. Discovery, “Superpowered: The DC Story,” arrives July 20 on Max. The three-part series, which Iwerks co-directed with Mark A. Catalena, is a deep dive into the history and legacy of DC Comics, home to superheroes including Batman and Superman. The series also details the rivalry between DC and Marvel.

“You know, it’s funny, I went to the other side of the tracks, didn’t I?” admits Leslie Iwerks as she begins talking about the four-part docuseries “100 Years of Warner Bros.: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of” that she directed for Max. Why the other side? Because the Oscar and Emmy nominee grew up as the daughter of longtime Disney executive Don Iwerks and granddaughter of Ub Iwerks, the Disney animation legend who worked side-by-side with Walt Disney and co-created Mickey Mouse. Yet here Leslie was tasked with putting together the ultimate history of a studio (Warner Bros.) that has long been a chief competitor of Disney. How did that happen? Her 2019 documentary “The Imagineering Story” that told the tale of Disney Imagineering came to the attention of the Warner Bros. folks. “They really liked it and asked if I could do something similar for them (to celebrate their 100th),” Iwerks says.

How do you compress 100 years of boundary-pushing filmmaking, behind-the-scenes drama and technological advancements into four hour-long installments?
This was the challenge laid out before Leslie Iwerks and her new documentary “100 Years of Warner Bros: The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.” Iwerks, an unparalleled documentary filmmaker who is responsible for Disney’s wonderful “The Imagineering Story,” tasked Morgan Freeman with narrating the tale of a small studio that would soon conquer Hollywood and its ever-evolving filmmaking slate, which allowed for people to escape into another world or hold a mirror up to our own.
TheWrap spoke to Iwerks about how she whittled a massive, century-long story of Hollywood mythmaking into highly digestible episodes, focusing on the storytelling rather than the corporate upheaval and what her favorite Warner Bros. movie is (hint: it’s not a doc). Iwerks was in Cannes at the time, where the film was debuting out of competition.

Emmy voters continue to prove that overdue narratives don’t factor into their decisions when picking winners. Just ask actors like Martin Sheen (“The West Wing”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and last year’s Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), who were never able to win Emmys for their respective iconic performances. Not everyone can be as lucky as Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”), one of the rare cases of an overdue actor actually being given the Emmy for the final season of their show.
This year, while voters did finally reward overdue favorites like Maya Rudolph and Kerry Washington for the first time, there were numerous actors at the 2020 Emmys who weren’t quite as lucky. Below is a list of the nine Emmy nominees who have now racked up at least five losses from the TV academy.

The Primetime Emmys take place on September 20 and air live coast-to-coast on ABC. But the majority of awards are handed out at the five Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies that take place in the week leading up to TV’s biggest night. The Creative Arts trophies will be awarded at five events on: September 14 (reality and nonfiction; Sept. 15 (variety); Sept. 16; Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 (mix). The first four of these will stream live on Emmys.com while the last will air on Fxx.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced TV productions, film shoots and entertainment events to shut down all year to slow the spread of the easily transmitted disease, all of this year’s Emmy ceremonies will be held virtually. While Jimmy Kimmel emcees just one show — the Emmys next Sunday — Best Reality Host nominee Nicole Byer (“Nailed It”) has been tapped to preside over all five of the Creative Arts awards.

David Attenborough cemented his third straight win at tonight’s Creative Artists Emmy Awards, taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Narration for his work on the BBC America documentary “Seven Worlds, One Planet.” The win comes with its fair share of controversy, though, considering Attenborough — the go-to narrator over the decades for nature documentaries — was the only white nominee.
The Outstanding Narrator category is a relatively young one for the Emmys. It initially debuted back in 2016. Attenborough’s win is a bit of a shock considering the Emmys’ push towards diversity and inclusion, especially in a year where this very category saw four of five nominees being Black performers. However, the category, historically, has often been the domain of white Englishmen, going back to the year the category debuted; Jeremy Irons was the first Outstanding Narrator winner for his work on “Game of Lions.” Since that time predominately white actors have snagged wins,...

After five previous Emmy nominations, Angela Bassett has two opportunities to score the first Emmy win of her career. One of those opportunities is in the Best Comedy Guest Actress category where she is up for her guest spot on HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show.” Bassett is nominated for playing Mo in one of the sketches from the show’s first episode, entitled “Angela Bassett is the Baddest Bitch.”
Bassett’s sketch takes place during a support group meeting for self-described “bad bitches.” The sketch opens with the group discussing how they don’t let their men see them without makeup on. Bassett then appears as Mo, the head of the support group, countering that she feels the baddest when her man is worshiping her natural face. This causes another member of the group, Mya (Gabrielle Dennis) to wish she didn’t have to be a bad bitch all the time.

For “A Black Lady Sketch Show” director and producer Dime Davis, “we didn’t really set out to be an Emmy-nominated show. We just set out to do something that had never been done before, and I think that was our focus.” The HBO series nevertheless did earn three nominations, and Davis herself has two of them: Best Variety Sketch Series and Best Variety Series Directing. This is the first time Black women have ever been nominated in those categories (the show’s third nom is for guest star Angela Bassett). Watch our exclusive video interview with Davis above.

Angela Bassett earned two Emmy nominations this year for projects that couldn’t be more different: Best Comedy Guest Actress for HBO’s “A Black Lady Sketch Show” and Best Narrator for Disney+‘s documentary series “The Imagineering Story.” In one, she leads a bad bitches support group in an episode appropriately titled “Angela Bassett is the Baddest Bitch.” In the other, she recounts the story of how Disney creative artists and technicians created attractions for theme parks here and abroad. Watch our exclusive interview with Bassett about her dual nominations above.
Her “Black Lady Sketch Show” appearance went pretty quickly, as she recalls: “We filmed actually about four to five hours — morning until about noon or 1:00 — so it was a really quick turnaround. I got to work with some amazing young artists that I was just becoming familiar with,” as well as fellow guest-starring bad bitch Laverne Cox.

One of the hidden strengths of Disney Plus — a streaming service whose subtler assets are indeed easily overshadowed by the library of blockbuster movies available — is its collection of entertainments that pay tribute to the history of its parent company. For die-hard fans, “The Imagineering Story” and “Prop Culture” pull back the aperture a bit and allow fans to feel a bit closer to the action, a mission that only really makes sense for a streamer with quite so precisely calibrated a brand identity.
“Howard,” a new documentary directed by longtime Disney producer Don Hahn and launching on the service August 7, is likeliest to appeal to diehards who’ve already familiarized themselves with what else is on offer there. But there’s stuff there to appeal to anyone who’s ever hummed along to “Under the Sea” or “Be Our Guest,” too. Telling the story of Howard Ashman — the lyricist...

You’re probably already aware that Academy Award winners Cate Blanchett (“Mrs. America”), Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Regina King (“Watchmen”) and Octavia Spencer (“Self Made”), among others, landed Emmy nominations on Tuesday, but there are a handful of other familiar faces that joined the ranks in less-publicized categories. Most of these winners will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmys in two separate virtual ceremonies on Sept. 12 and 13, a week before the primetime telecast on Sept. 20. Check out the complete list of nominations here.

Two new streaming services made impressive debuts in the 2020 Emmy race. Disney+ and Apple TV+ shattered the expectations of naysayers, who worried that the streamers wouldn’t have the snob appeal or reach to register with Emmy voters. The nominations total for each of these freshmen streaming networks bested the previous first year nominations record by streaming services.
Thanks in large part to the massive success of the first ever live action series set in the “Star Wars” universe, Disney+ just had the best first year nomination tally ever for a streaming service. They snagged a total of nineteen nominations, fifteen of which came from the cultural phenomenon “The Mandalorian.” The saga of a lone gunslinger in a galaxy far far away went viral thanks to Baby Yoda memes, but won over TV fans thanks to its western and samurai influenced presentation. Jason Bateman, reigning Emmy winner for director in a drama series, is a double threat on the acting side this year. He landed his third consecutive nomination in the Lead Actor In a Drama series category for his starring role as Martin ‘Marty’ Byrde on Netflix’s Ozark. Additionally, he is nominated as a Guest Actor In a Drama Series for his recurring role as Terry Maitland on HBO’s The Outsider.
This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, who is facing Bateman in the actor in a drama series field, also is a double acting nominee. In addition to his fourth consecutive Lead Actor in a Drama Series nom for playing Randall Pearce on NBC’s This Is Us (he won the trophy in 2017), Brown is nominated in the Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category for his arc as Reggie on Season 3 of Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs.

Baby Yoda is now an Emmy contender. So are several new streaming platforms.
Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus and Quibi all earned nominations from the Television Academy, with Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” making a surprise appearance on the best drama series list and Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston getting nods in the lead acting categories for Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show.”
“The Mandalorian” nabbed a total of 15 Emmy nominations, in categories including sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, voice-over and stunt coordination, making it the most nominated program from a direct-to-consumer service that debuted in the last year. The voice-over nod went to “Star Wars” fan-favorite Taika Waititi for his performance as Ig-11, the bounty hunter droid-turned Baby Yoda protector. Waititi wasn’t the only “Mandalorian” performer to receive a nomination, as Giancarlo Esposito broke into the guest actor in a drama category for playing the villainous, dark saber-wielding Moff Gideon.

Coronavirus stay-at-home orders dramatically impacted television viewing habits, driving up consumption of just about every genre of programming, including documentary. The resulting huge audience numbers and media attention generated by Tiger King and The Last Dance could give those nonfiction series a leg-up as Emmy voters prepare to mark their nomination ballots.
Tiger King, the seven-part series on “murder, mayhem and madness” in the eccentric world of big cat breeders and private zoo operators, dropped on Netflix March 20, just as lockdown orders were being imposed across much of the U.S. Director Eric Goode is the first to say people moored in their homes, TV remote in hand, helped turn the series into a cultural phenomenon.
“I do think we all must assume that that’s part of it,” Goode states. “For sure.”

The Skywalker saga will be available in force, with eight “Star Wars” films available from launch and “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” arriving at a later date. In a surprise announcement, Bob Iger said he was stepping down as Disney’s chief exec citing “the successful launch of Disney’s direct-to-consumer businesses” as one reason for the timing as he hands off to new CEO Bob Chapek.
True, Disney earlier this month reported tremendous growth for Disney Plus, racking up 28.6 million users just three months out of the gate, as well as gains at Hulu (which it now controls) and ESPN Plus. The company’s Direct-to-Consumer & International division is headed by Kevin Mayer, who had been seen by some as a possible successor to Iger in the CEO seat. Disney created Dtci in 2018 as part of a reorg in creating a dedicated home for its streaming initiatives.
Yet there are signs that Disney’s streaming businesses are still very much a work in progress, with key questions of how all the pieces will fit together — or not — moving forward.

"The Imagineering Story" is an original six-hour series documenting the history of "Walt Disney Imagineering" and the 'Audio-Animatronic' robots at the Disney theme parks, directed by Leslie Iwerks, now streaming on Disney+ :
"...the series looks at the 65-year history of 'Walt Disney Imagineering' through parallel storylines focused on the people, the craft, and the business. 'Oscar' and 'Emmy'-nominated director, producer Leslie Iwerks, creator of the series, will feature interviews and exclusive sneak peeks from Disney parks around the world..."
One note: whether deliberate or not the awful-looking 'Donald Trump' robot at Disney's 'Hall of Presidents' discredits the fine workmanship of Disney's skilled designers.
But a wax figure from 'Madame Tussauds' London, UK museum did get it right.
