ABC has ordered the drama based on the graphic novel series “Stumptown” to series, marking the network’s first series pick up for the 2019-2020 season.
The now untitled project, formerly known as “Stumptown,” follows Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders), described as a strong, assertive, and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt, and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon. Her military intelligence skills make her a great P.I., but her unapologetic style puts her in the firing line of hardcore criminals and not quite in alliance with the police.
The series also stars Tantoo Cardinal as Sue Lynn Blackbird, Cole Sibus as Ansel Parios, Adrian Martinez as Tookie, Camryn Manheim as Lieutenant Cosgrove, and Michael Ealy as Det. Miles Hoffman.
Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth, and Justin Greenwood, respectively the author and illustrators of the graphic novel series, will executive produce with Jason Richman...

ABC has handed its first new drama series pickup to one of its buzziest pilots, Untitled Cobie Smulders (fka Stumptown), a graphic novels adaptation headlined by the Avengers co-star. It is ABC’s second series order overall, joining the black-ish spinoff mixed-ish. Both project hails from ABC Studios. Hinting at their high hopes for Stumptown, which had been an internal favorite from the start, ABC Studios just signed a new overall deal with the drama’s creator Jason Richman.
The Cobie Smulders pilot was written by Richman and directed by James Griffiths. Based on the Stumptown graphic novel series, it follows Dex Parios (Smulders) as a strong, assertive, and sharp-witted army veteran with a complicated love life, gambling debt, and a brother to take care of in Portland, Oregon. With the network screenings wrapping up, we are heading into the final stage of pilot season when network executives take the pilots that had screened the best/tested the highest and see which of them fit into their schedules for next season. With ABC’s order Thursday of Black-ish‘s young Rainbow-centered prequel Mixed-ish kicking off the new series pickups, here is our final pilot buzz list.
The field of leading ABC drama contenders has narrowed down a bit. Staying strong after the screenings are early standouts Pi drama Stumptown starring Cobie Smulders, the soapy, John Mayer song-inspired Heart of Life, the new NYPD Blue and the untitled Hank Steinberg /50 Cent legal drama. NY Undercover also has supporters; I hear its fate might be tied to that of bubble drama The Rookie as ABC is unlikely to go for three cop dramas in these two and NYPD Blue. I...

Zoe Quinn, Robbi Rodriguez, and Rico Renzi have crafted a fascinating magical tech future in Goddess Mode.
When you imagine a cyberpunk world in your head, the image you conjure is probably full of grime and dinge. Neon street signs whose glow is diffuse through a thick smog that's condensing to rain before it can get to the top of the suffocating skyscrapers that occasionally let the rich folks go higher than the pollution and see natural light. One where technology is the enemy, whether it's biological tech that exacerbates economic inequality to a horrifying degree (like Altered Carbon) or tech that's gone mad because it's got a few valid points (like Blade Runner). But while most of what makes the genre stand out is set dressing, what all of its best examples have in common are their focus on the people of that future: how they shape their world,...

It’s April, and Deadline is launching its annual Pilot Panic feature where we track buzz on the broadcast pilots as they go through production and and testing. We are late out of the gate this year, but that’s understandable — it’s been an extraordinary time of upheaval in the business, with 13,000 writers on Friday told by the WGA to fire their agents after the guild and the Ata could not reach a new franchise agreement.
The 2019 broadcast pilot season has been completely overshadowed by the WGA-ata battle. Still, handicapping broadcast pilots is a Deadline tradition, so let’s get to it. As usual, the first story is very sketchy and preliminary as many pilots are still in production and very few have been delivered. Here is a list of some pilots that are getting strong early buzz based on a combination of auspices, script, table read, taping or dailies.

ABC has gone ahead and ordered a TV pilot based on a Portland-born graphic novel titled Stumptown, a story that initially came out in 2009 and is about a private investigator by the name of Dex Parios that is attempting to solve an abduction that occurs under the St. Johns Bridge. It’s going to be interesting to see just how this comes together since the interpretation of those making the show versus those that actually penned the graphic novel might be a little different as is usually the norm with any project of this scope. But it does seem fair

Camryn Manheim has been cast in the ABC drama pilot “Stumptown,” Variety has learned.
Inspired by the graphic novel “Stumptown” by Greg Rucka, the project follows Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders), a strong, assertive, and unapologetically sharp-witted army veteran working as a P.I. in Portland, Oregon. With a complicated personal history and only herself to rely on, she solves other people’s messes with a blind eye toward her own.
Manheim will play Lt. Roberta Volk, Hoffman’s (Michael Ealy) superior officer on the Portland Police Department, and she has a no-nonsense, big city vibe. Her path crosses with Dex when she supervises Hoffman’s investigation into a kidnapping case.
Manheim joins previously announced cast members Smulders, Ealy, Mark Webber, and Adrian Martinez.
Manheim previously won both a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award for her role on the David E. Kelley legal drama “The Practice,” which aired on ABC.

Both Michael Ealy and Mark Webber have been cast in the ABC dram pilot “Stumptown,” Variety has learned.
Webber will play Grey McConnell, Dex’s best friend who has an unrequited crush on her. He’s been renovating an old-fashioned brew pub into a modern-sleek mixology joint and he’s hired Dex’s brother as his sole employee.
Ealy has been cast as Detective Miles Hoffman, a detective with the Portland Police Department. He’s looking for escaped convict Samuel Kane, who’s probably going to pay a visit to Grey McConnell any day now.

The number of broadcast drama pilots dropped this year to what may be an all-time low of 35, down from 41 in 2018. Despite the overall double-digit volume decline, Vancouver made big year-to-year gains with 10 drama pilots, up from 6 last year. That is believed to be an all-time record for the coastal Canadian city and is the most of any city this pilot season. For comparison, in 2014, when there was a similar low number of broadcast drama pilots, 36, Vancouver housed 5 of them.
In total, almost a third of the broadcast drama pilots this year, 11, are headed to Canada, boosted at least in part by an advantageous exchange rate, which may raise again the issue of runaway production. Meanwhile, Los Angeles, which had been regaining ground after the all-time low tally of 5 broadcast drama pilots in 2014 with the help of a tax incentives program that includes pilots, dropped from 8 hourlong...
