Very Interesting!!!!

I gotta say I didn't know how this would match up to all the original films, and I'll say it was nice little modern take on it and I can't wait for the next episode, wish it was like Netflix where they release the whole season at once #Chucky.

Bring On Round Two!
jeffstonewords13 October 2021
Lots of slick previews created a great hook around a series fraught with expectation. So, disappointment seemed like a strong possibility.

Nonetheless, early in the first episode, a brilliant E. B. White line at just the right moment referencing the examination of jokes and frogs suggested some valuable research was done. Indeed, throughout the episode it seemed Don Mancini put a lot of thought into foreshadowing, event timelines, motivation, conflicts... all those details that make a story effective, regardless of genre or medium.

Comedy, tension, intrigue, plot twists, thrilling crescendos, music by Billie Ellish and Kim Petras... there was a lot to like and not much to question or second-guess. A particular choice (carrying Chucky on the school bus) that seemed awkward initially was made plausible by subsequent events and nothing else stood out as terribly detracting or in need of redemption.

Sure, some of the dialogue is silly, but it should be. They are young people trapped in the terrifying realm between childhood and the so-called real world. They are either naturally awkward or filled with a manufactured brashness that hides inherent insecurity.

Waiting for the second installment will be tough, but there's always the option of watching a replay in the interim. Round One was a winner by knockout, both technical and otherwise.

You never get tired of Chucky or Brad Dourif's voice!
Chartreuse114 October 2021
The series filmed in Canada is really starting out quite well. We meet Jake and Jake meets Chucky at a garage sale and is drawn to him because he likes dolls and is openly gay. Jake finds out who Chucky really is and they become best buds. Wherever Jake goes, Chucky is right there beside him.

There were some comic elements to start off the series and so far, it really held my interest. Can't wait for episode 2 when we uncover the story of Charles Lee Ray!

A Great Start
baileycrawly13 October 2021
Compared to the terrible (and sketchy) 2019 remake of Child's Play, this series from original Chucky creator Don Mancini is a massive breath of fresh air.

The episode is a stand-alone, apparently relating to the story as it ends in Cult but bearing no immediate resemblance. It's a great suspense-building setup for what is to come, and it has a grand feel to it. Knowing other cast members that come on board down the road, you know this is going to be GOOD.

In this first episode, Don expertly touches on the struggles of the LGBT community, growing up experiencing bullying, alienation and a near-constant fear of being "outed" by peers. Without giving any spoilers, Don handles the situation respectfully and, eventually, cathartically. Ending with a little note to reach out for mental health support was a perfect touch to the episode.

Whether you loved or hated Cult, whether you're a Don Mancini fan or not, this show is worth checking out for anyone who has ever liked Chucky. It's well done and it's a perfect setup for future epsiodes.

It's not often that I hope for a second season on the strength of a single episode, but I definitely want to see this extend beyond a few weeks.

Amazing

This series really have great actors, the first episode was actually unexpected for a series inspired by horror movies, usually some are disappointing for a TV adaptation, a big premiere with a movie marathon.

Brilliant premiere!

Warning: Spoilers
I might be overrating this Pilot episode of the Chucky series DEATH BY MISADVENTURE a bit, but I have my reasons. First, I've never been a fan of the Child's Play franchise. I can barely remember anything about the first 1988 film only maybe seeing it once and never really watched in full any of the sequels, only seeing most of them in parts. Second, I know that the sequels diverged into the campy, silly, comic territory and like I said have seen scenes from them here and there and I think I've actually seen the full movies as part of riff watching platforms. Third, I actually did watch the recent 2019 reboot and hated that movie. The main kid in the reboot was obnoxious and there was too much cringe dialogue in it that took me out of the horror element. Fourth, I honestly didn't like the last movie Cult of Chucky from 2017 that will directly connect to this series at some point. In my EXTREMELY unpopular opinion, the best film of the entire franchise is the incredibly underrated Curse of Chucky from 2013 and until I re-watch the original '88 film to gauge my feelings, the 2013 movie is really the ONLY thing I like about the Chucky franchise. And FINALLY (lol), since I'm really not a fan of the Child's Play universe, I was blown away by how good the Pilot of this continuation TV series was to the point that I'm giving it a 10. It doesn't matter to me that I can't recall much about the old movies or that I haven't liked most of the recent ones, good TV is just good TV, and this new series is promising.

The new series is set in Hackensack, NJ, and focuses on 14-year old teen Jake Wheeler (persuasively played by Zackary Arthur), a lonely and shy middle-schooler who lives with his widowed father Luke (underrated veteran actor Devon Sawa in a welcome return to the screen after his memorable turn in the groundbreaking Final Destination franchise from almost 20 years ago). Jake's mother died in a car accident and he inherited her artistic inclination as he collects dolls and dreams of eventually being a sculptor. Jake is also openly gay and gets bullied by several classmates, the main one being Lexy Cross (expertly played by teen phenom Alyvia Alyn Lind). Lexy is the cliche mean girl and most popular girl in school and the daughter of the town mayor (played by Lind's real life mother Barbara Alyn Woods of One Tree Hill fame). Jake also has a bad relationship with his cousin Junior (the talented Teo Briones from Season 1 of Ratched). Junior is the son of Jake's uncle Logan (also played by Devon Sawa). Jake's aunt, Logan's wife and Junior's mother is Bree (played by Lexa Doig of Jason X fame).

Most of the characters in the Pilot are not very nice to Jake. However, there a couple of bright spot characters. One is Jake's supportive yet stern biology teacher Miss Fairchild (winningly played by newcomer Annie Briggs), who defends him from his teen bullies. The other is Jake's friend Devon (well played by Bjorgvin Arnarson), who is also gay and who Jake has a crush on. Devon is an intrepid reporter-in-the-making and has a podcast that focuses on both current events as well as the town's history. One particular historical figure in Hackensack history is notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray, introduced in the 1988 film and played by the iconic Brad Dourif, who also voiced the Chucky doll in that film, several of the sequels, as well as in this series. You know the story, as he was nearing death, Ray managed to transfer his soul into a Good Guy doll and thus Chucky was born.

The Pilot jumpstarts the story with Jake buying Chucky at a yard sale for $20 as he plans to tear off his head to use for one of his doll sculptures. But Chucky has other plans! Unlike a lot of TV drama Pilots, instead of just being an hour of pure and awkward exposition, the writing actually seamlessly tells a story with characters and a world that feel lived in. This episode on it's own can be re-watched as a standalone and feel like a complete story. But thankfully, the story will continue because it sets up future plots for the season and hopefully future seasons. There's a particular clever and entertaining scene, the school talent show, that really hooked me into the episode and made me realize these writers aren't going to go full on cliche with nothing but gruesome killing. Also, for a low-budget series on USA network, it does a great job of capturing a big screen horror movie atmosphere with a creepy vibe and avoids the cheesy "jump scare" moments that so many horror filmmakers have become obsessed with in the last decade. For an episode with a lot of cliche TV/movie plot points, it somehow came across as pleasantly non-cliche. Expertly mixing horror with family melodrama and school bullying, this new series CHUCKY looks like it will be a winner!

Many characters that scream privilege...
snktrss10 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Questions with this episode. Why didn't the teacher give detention to the kid who throws a coin and then proceeds to trip the main character. She also reprimands the girl barely and only Chucky is why she retracts her threat. This day and time forcing an individual to admit their sexual interest and acting like it's 1980s when this is accepted is confusing dialogue, what year is the suppose to be taking place in? What is Junior's issue? Appears to me that he's the one who is confused. Now don't get me wrong I'm enjoying the angle and take so far. Much better than I anticipated.

Chuck is BACK!
jalalmusleh-6874813 October 2021
Man I've never been this excited about a horror television series in a long time! Chucky is subtle but is still up to his same old ways. Chucky seems to be his old self, cracking up jokes, being subtle and deceptive. Chucky is phenomenal here The characters are really good too. I feel like the main actor does a good job of maintaining innocence, similar to what Andy Barcley was in the first movie.

My only concern of the show is the bully teenagers. They seemed WAY to over the top with there "bully" mentality.

Overall great start to the show and I can't wait for future episodes.

Chucky (2021) Review

PROS

-Brad is Back -Retro -Interesting Music Choice -Semi-Fast Pacing -Comedic as Always -Minor Glimpses of Easter Eggs/Origin Stories -Younger Audience Will Get to See the OG Cast

Cons

-Over Dramatic Political Views (come on) -Not a Whole Lot of Likable Characters, or any... -First Kill was Horrible, Done 100x, Mix it Up Don Man -Bit of Lackluster Doll Movements from Prod. Crew

Other than that, it's got a 7! I'm not an expert, just a critic like everyone else in this world with an opinion. I have very high hopes for this Chucky Series. Stoked to see Kyle, Andy, and maybe... JUST Maybe.. get to see the OG Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon)!

Terrible... But Chucky is a Blast
donaldsbelliveau23 October 2021
The show is filled with terrible actors and the first 3/4 is just uninteresting. But every time Brad gets to voice Chucky it's loads of fun. They gave me JUST enough to watch the next episode.

Chucky by way of the CW

I don't get all the praise. It's like every other teen drama with Chucky. Who takes a doll to high school?! The acting is just awful. Only when Chucky comes alive, the show comes alive.

What a premiere!
jamesthecreatorr13 October 2021
Wow is all i can say. I wasn't expecting much, especially considering this is the Syfy channel and they're not necessarily known for quality content, but this was truly something else. The writing is brilliant, the soundtrack is really well done with some familiar songs, and Brad Douriff really steals the show as always. I will be tuning in every week to see how much better it can get.

JUST OKAY - (6 stars out of 10)
BJG-Reviews6 December 2021
The stage curtains open ...

Episode 1, "Death by Misadventure", of the new Chucky Series wasn't bad. As an introduction, it served its purpose. I've been onboard with Chucky since the very first "Child's Play" movie came out in 1988. Having Brad Dourif do the voice of the maniacal doll was a stroke of genious and it was awesome to see that he has returned to the role, as well as bringing back the original doll instead of trying to invent a new look for him like the last reboot movie did.

This story begins 4 years after the events of the film, "Cult of Chucky" in the city of Hackensack, New Jersey, where our main character, Jake, discovers a vintage Good Guy Doll at a yardsale. Purchasing the doll for $10, Jake takes it home with him, not knowing really what he has in his possesion. Being bullied at school, the brunt of cruel jokes from his cousin, and under the scrutinizing eye of his father ever since his mother died, Jake is learning to deal with his own sexuality and the loss of his mother. When he finds out how much his Good Guy Doll named Chucky is worth ($1,500), he immediately puts him up for sale and receives a strange phone call from an anonymous person warning him to be careful, and to check the batteries. It isn't long before Jake knows that what he has is much more than a doll.

I found this to be entertaining, but as for this first episode, it wasn't anything special or noteworthy. There were a few things I pulled out of it that I did like. I felt that the production value was good. It was well filmed, with good cinematography, use of colors and special effects. The school talent show was pretty cool, and I love that we seem to be getting more of a background and history on Charles Lee Ray himself.

For a foundational episode, this was solid. I have high hopes though, that the series will get better as it develops, because if this is as good as it gets, well ... I will have to wait and see before I can comment on that. I give this 6 stars out of 10 with the promise of something better as the series unfolds.

Perfect premier
adamcastillofeb17 October 2021
Slashers films are very close to my heart I grew up with the classics from the age 4 I've always loved the cheesy gore effects and campy dialogue but what makes for good film doesn't always adapt well to tv so I was excited but skeptical when hearing about this project but this premier was the pure essence of what Chucky is and just like cult you can tell working on the Hannibal series has taught don some neat tricks to use behind the camera I absolutely loved the directing in this episode I just hope the rest of the series lives up to the legacy don has created new favorite line from the Chuck "oh I thought we were talking about that cat"

Not that bad, but not scary
poinla3718 October 2021
Why going for a CGI puppet instead of using a puppet puppet? It is way less scary than the original puppet. What define a puppet is that it can moves only a certain way, and not like a human.

But using CGI and making Chucky's moves smoother, they made it look too human, like Baby Boss.... Not scary at all!

Anyway, appart from that huge issue, the pilot wasn't that bad compare to... let's say, I know what you did last summer for example!

Is it okay for a doll to talk nonsense and the boy doesn't care at all?
gabriel-170829 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In a specific scene, Chucky just talks like a normal person and the boy acts normally. Before that there are events that would never happen in real life, like that girl treating everyone with hate for free. This type of character clearly only serves to make the plot work.

Overall i liked it... but it could be a little less surreal some scenes, despite being fiction. :)

TOO geared to the youngsters...
drkne14 October 2021
From the very beginning the music really put me off. It didn't fit the mood or the situation and I felt like it was detrimental to the scene. I think they just stuck it in to rev up the kids and get them excited. Cannot stand any of the music and hope they only coughed up the royalties for the first episode. The all too common hoarse/whispery singer and same old same old annoying, generic, tired, easy-make beats that comprise 90% of commercial music these days. Plus the music sound level was mixed in way too high. I had to keep actively resisting my change-channel reflex because of it.

I realize this is a show, so they are dragging things out to last, but the slow progression is decidedly not Chucky-like. He's usually ready to roll right from the start. It's not like him to be so patient.

The return of Brad Dourif and the fact that they ditched the horrible 2019 storyline are the best things about this. Happy to see in the coming preview that Jennifer Tilly will be back so I still have some hopes that this will pick up.

Characters/actors range from bland to intolerable with the typical levels of questionable intelligence you see in characters of the genre. But that's not a bad thing and is often done on purpose since it makes you look forward to the kills and they are more rewarding that way. It definitely got me feeling the "bring on the slaughter!" vibe.

I'm sure this is far more appealing to younger people, but as a gen X'er who's seen literally hundreds of horror movies and series from around the world, I can say that by comparison this is a sub-par start, but also not the worst thing in the world.
