Human trafficking on Shetland
Tweekums20 March 2019
These comments refer to the entire fifth series not just the final episode.

This series opens with the discovery of a severed hand on a local beach. Perez and the team start to investigate and it soon takes them to dark places as it emerges the dead man was searching for his sister, Zezi, who had been trafficked into the UK and was believed to be on Shetland. When he is identified his estranged mother comes to the island hoping to find Zezi... unfortunately her actions only make things harder for the police. As the series progresses there are more murders and a suspect dies in custody.

Given that Shetland is actually one of the most peaceful areas of the UK one must suspend ones disbelief somewhat... if you can do that this is a solid story. There is lots of tension; especially in the scenes where we see Zezi in captivity being threatened by her captor. There are a few disturbing scenes but nothing overly graphic. While we know the identity of her captor there is still a mystery about who is behind trafficking people through Shetland and their connections to various locals. Unfortunately there are a few too many clichés; an officer under threat of investigation, the possible involvement of people close to Perez, and potential threats to his daughter... these weren't enough to spoil my enjoyment though. As one would expect the acting; particularly from the regular cast, is good and there is lots of rugged Shetland scenery to be admired. Overall I don't think this was the best series of 'Shetland' but it was still well worth watching.

A police state?
algrant-4816327 November 2023
Whilst I enjoy watching the series, mostly down to the excellent cast of the police force , I am beginning to wonder if PACE never got to the shetland islands. Officers wander down to the cells for an off the record chat with prisoners. People are pldetained in cells without belts and shoe laces being removed. Interviews are conducted without benefit of legal advice or recordings. Pèrez seems to disregard ALL rules of evidence and completely ignores the Fiscal as he decides who to charge or not to charge without reference to the Fiscal or any injured party.

This does not make it any the less watchable but it does seem that the writer is playing fast and loose with the law.

Even in Shetland!

I LOVE Shetland, but...

Warning: Spoilers
I love Shetland but, while still great drama, this was my least favorite season of all. The character of Olivia may be one of the most unlikeable non-criminals in the entire series. She is constantly making bad decisions, never gives a hint of gratitude, and really made me dislike the series (just a little). Loved the Tosh romance storyline. Jimmy being forced to question or not trust a person close to him (Alice) is repetitive from last season when he had to question Duncan's involvement in possible criminal activity. I hope this series isn't the start of a downward spiral for the show as I am a HUGE fan. As always, brilliantly acted and scenery is amazing.

Episode 5.6

Poor Zezi she certainly has no luck in escaping her captor.

With Perez now being able to interrogate one of the people who held her, he realises he is involved in a race against time to find Zezi safe.

Perez also now fears that someone close to him has been involved in the people trafficking ring. Perez also thinks that he has been used as insurance in case the heat gets to much for the villain.

I raised a collective groan when suspicion fell on Perez's friends. However I did like one mystery had nothing to do with the traffickers and it still needed clearing up.

At six parts this story did feel stretched, it could had been done and dusted in four parts. There was some nice but disturbing photography when we saw the corpses of the people being trafficked on the coast.

Tosh Good. Perez Good. Writers Bad.

Warning: Spoilers
I love this series, but this season has some really problematic storyline choices. Also, the resolution of some of the storylines is pretty perfunctory.

The mother of the victim is bizarrely horrible and exists only to hinder the investigation. She is allowed to almost kill someone and herself without charges being brought because she is distraught and because her only purpose is to make the story more difficult to resolve.

Perez has a love interest but we aren't given much of a clue as to why they would be attracted. Also, Perez is not the guy to get involved with a married woman. I don't see him vaulting from grieving widower saint to homewrecker without some bridging storyline.

At the end, there is a thread with a businessman from Glasgow that seems directly connected to the crime at hand but it just fizzles out other than a warning to Duncan. Maybe this storyline will continue in Season 6 (or did, as I haven't binged that one yet). Also, both Tosh and Sandy get a roughly 90 second resolution to their storylines, which is somewhat unfulfilling.

I like all the main characters. I just feel like the plotting of this season was pretty slapdash and exists only to fill out the six episodes.
