Very Underrated
15 March 2017
I read one review that said this is nothing new for the genre which might be the case but its the film's unique story telling and quirkiness that made it enjoyable for me. It's relatable being that I live in NYC and the dating scene here is awful. We see our main character reflect on his failed relationship, date with some successes and failures, and then finally in the end find some inner peace. I feel that the kind of advice his friends try to give him is very similar to some of the crappy advice I was given from friends and family when I became single again. I think sometimes people are just better at making things sound better than they really are. It's that message and the experiences Aaron Tveit's character has that makes this movie worth watching.

Great Indie Flick
10 March 2017
I was browsing through Netflix last night after watching the latest Amy Schumer special (and being disappointed) and found this movie. I saw the description and was immediately intrigued. Without giving too much away, Joe is a programmer that uses his wife's voice and likeness for a telephone answering system for a client. What results is resentment on the part of his wife, Emily, as he seems to become attached to his creation (you'll see what you mean when you watch it). It was really touching to see how great of a partner Emily is and how ignorant Joe is to his wife's needs. It ends on a happy note though and if nothing else, I fell in love with Mae Whitman by the end of the movie. And at the very least, it seems like a cautionary tale for how technology can consume you or sometimes replace real human connections. If it means anything, I've been thinking about the movie since I finished watching it late last night. Definitely recommend.

Best Movie I Have Seen in the Theater in a Long While!
15 March 2016
Pure escapism. I'm a big sci-fiction fan so perhaps I'm a little biased. This movie proves that Hollywood still has original ideas, not a lot but still has some. It kept me guessing all the way until the end and never did it seem to drag or dwell on any one topic. Our protagonist becomes trapped with John Goodman and John Gallagher for an indeterminate amount of time because of a supposed attack outside. What we are given is a psychological guessing game between what's real and what's not. John Goodman is extra creepy in this one, probably manic depressive, as he keeps his two guests trapped with little means to escape. It's a little depressing towards the end but without giving too much away, the movie goes full out sci-fi at the film's conclusion. I definitely recommend this to anyone that enjoys thrillers, even if they're not necessarily a Star Wars or Aliens fan. As opposed to it's predecessor, Cloverfield, 10 Cloverfield is 90% psychological. I loved it and hope you will too!

Predictable Reboot
7 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Talk all the crap you want about the prequels but I actually liked them. Were they perfect? By no means. They had their issues but so did Return of the Jedi. The franchise as a whole started going downhill when Gary Kurtz was fired after Empire. Lucas chose adorable Ewoks as opposed to Wookies as the inhabitants of Endor. With that being said, regardless, it's his franchise and his rules I suppose. The prequels were his story whether you like it or not and what you got was a decent story that was overshadowed by overdone CGI and bad acting on the part of Hayden Christensen. Even with the prequels' problems they told a story of Palpatine's rise to power and Anakin Skywalker's journey to the dark side and transformation into Darth Vader. Could have it used tighter editing? Absolutely. Could they done without Jar Jar Binks? Certainly. Did it tell a decent story? I know it's my opinion but yes, I believe they did.

As for The Force Awakens, you get a predictable reboot that feels like a consolidated version of the original three movies. Death Star, check. Scary looking villain in mask, check. End lightsaber battle, check. All the elements of a classic Star Wars movie without the depth or character development of any of the previous films. All it really succeeds in doing is reintroducing the story for those that hadn't seen any Star Wars movies before. What's sad is that none of George Lucas' ideas were even used considering it's his creation to begin with. He sounds like a jerk but to completely go over his head is asinine.

Not only that but the lead female, Rey, somehow knows how to be a Jedi without any kind of training. Finn, who has training as a stormtropper, seems to be the useless token black guy in the movie. I'm all for strong female leads, Aliens is probably the best example but there was character development there. Sigourney Weaver's Ripley is awesome. With Rey, there is no development or depth. She is just given these powers and Finn is just her dumb sidekick along for the ride. Throw is a stupid villain that looks like JP from Grandma's Boy (who has a helmet fetish apparently) and it just adds to the stupidity.

I really had a lot of hope for this movie and I'm hoping that maybe this was just meant as an introduction for new fans. But somehow I think I will be disappointed. Disney has their hands in Star Wars and Marvel now. With DC trying to compete with the Batman vs. Superman movies et al, looks like there will be no original movies to see in the near future. Want to see a great movie? Check out a little movie called Ex Machina. Probably one of the best films I've seen in years. And it's original. What a thought!

Spectre Should Be the Last Film of the Franchise
6 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I found Skyfall to be very overrated personally so I would rather not compare. I still think Casino Royale is the strongest of the reboot films. Spectre was good but does get a little weak after the second act. The good thing about it is it returns James Bond back to his roots. The action is more akin to the older movies as compared to the Jason Bourne-esque fight sequences of the previous Craig films. The thing that personally drives me crazy is that they are really grasping at straws at this point because the producers have run out of ideas. Spectre does a good job at closing out the Craig films and they should really just stop at this point. Bond finally meets a woman in this one that understands him and tell him she loves him. After walking out of the theater, I overheard someone next to me say "what's he going to do now, work for Doctors Without Borders." I thought that was pretty funny given the closure that they finally gave the character in this movie. I know it probably won't happen but I think James Bond has finally reached the end. There's nowhere else to go unless they just start remaking the old ones. But I guess we'll see.

I Think I Fell In Love with Amy Schumer By the End...
14 September 2015
I enjoy her stand up and her show (even though I don't watch it religiously) but she's very funny in general. It is very raunchy so if you don't like that type of humor don't go see this. But if you're a Judd Apatow fan then you'll like this. Although a little over the top at times (without giving away too much, the canceled surgery scene comes to mind), I thought the chemistry between Schumer and Hader was great. Very believable and relatable to anyone that's been in a long term relationship. A lot of people didn't like it but I found the end cheer leading scene to be really funny and sweet. One of those endings where you almost wish it was real life...as corny as that sounds. This is no Oscar winner but combined with the humor and the chemistry between the characters it's a sure winner for this summer.

Interstellar (2014)
10/10
One of my favorite movies!
27 August 2015
I have nothing bad to say about this movie. I loved everything about it. I know there's a lot of people who said it was stupid and poorly written but these are the same people that thought Birdman was great. To each their own but this movie was original and thought provoking.

Christopher Nolan is probably one of the remaining mainstream filmmakers that makes original films (with exception of the Dark Knight series which I enjoyed as well). Interstellar takes all the awe of 2001 and mixes it with the intelligence and emotion of Contact. I remember walking out of the theater questioning my very existence. Not to get too melodramatic but that's seriously how I felt.

In a world of Marvel and Transformers, I'm glad there's some decent movies out there. Especially one that is as scientifically accurate as this one (nothing is 100% except for maybe Apollo 13 but this comes pretty close). If you enjoyed this, read Kip Thorne's accompanying book "The Science of Interstellar." You won't regret it.

I understand there's many who felt (including my ex) that it was too cheesy or just not that good but I couldn't disagree more. Maybe it's because not many people want to think while watching a movie. There's some complexities but nothing too overwhelming especially compared to some other movies I've seen (one of them being Quantum of Solace-I still don't understand what happened).

In conclusion, if you want to escape for 3 hours and enjoy some great science fiction, check out Interstellar. Hopefully you won't regret. I know I didn't.

A White Man's Wet Dream
6 June 2015
You'll enjoy it naturally if you've been following the show. You might even like it if you haven't. This is pretty much a fantasy film for every single man in America-getting laid and constant partying with no consequences. Seeing as how the last season ended it would make sense that the producers played it safe (no real surprises here, everything works out for all the characters in the end). Don't get me wrong, I liked it. But don't expect anything deeper than what you've seen in the previous season. Take it for what it is, pure escapism. IMDb wants me to say more but there isn't much to say other than it's the male equivalent of Sex and the City. If you want something deep go see another movie. Enough said.

Very relatable film.
19 May 2015
My review might be slightly biased as I just went through a breakup myself (and still getting through it). I found this movie to be very relatable. The acting, the script, the dialogue (although cheesy at times), and the cinematography were all very well done. The chemistry between Long and Rossum was very believable as were the struggles they went through. I would best compare this movie to be a cross between 500 Days of Summer and Eternal Sunshine. They say that it shows Long crossing between parallel universes but the way I interpreted was he was time traveling through different parts of his relationship (I could have it right) almost like Slaughterhouse 5. I recommend this to anyone who has a heart. I'll be the first to admit that it made me cry.

Sharknado (2013 TV Movie)

Worst movie ever...but fun to laugh at.
19 July 2013
This movie is terrible. I watched it because one of my co-workers was raving about how ridiculous it was and I heard a bunch of stuff about it on the radio. I knew going into it was going to be terrible but this is easily probably one the worst movie ever made. This makes The Room look like an Oscar winner (on a side note, if you haven't seen The Room and have seen this, watch it).

The CGI is not bad but there was next to no effort blending it in with the live action. One second it's sunny, next it's pouring. Also, the acting is terrible. Characters are killed left and right but no one seems to care. There is only one scene where someone is killed and there is some reaction from the other characters.

Overall, I wasn't expecting much but it's so bad that I don't know if I have the patience to sit through it again. I will say this though, as bad as it was I will probably sit through the sequel...

Funny People-Judd Apatow's First Artistic Risk
10 August 2009
The problem with this movie was not the movie, but the way it was advertised. Most people probably went in looking for another "Superbad" or "40 Year Old Virgin" but it just was not the case this time around. What resulted instead was a well thought out film with some meaning for once. I like all of Apatow's previous films, but this was definitely his first artistic risk per say. Like all successful film makers, those movies were his break into his business. This is his first risk taker-his first serious film.

"Funny People" still has some great jokes and co-stars some great actors. Jonah Hill along with Jason Schwartzman adds some lightness to the film. Aubrey Plaza as Daisy plays a good but undeveloped character as Rogen's love interest-which is a subject that doesn't get too much screen time. Leslie Mann is great as usual and just the dynamic between her is Sandler made me want to cry-call me a chick, go ahead.

Overall, it's a good movie and unfortunately probably will only live on as a B movie. But if you want something that's more than a bunch of the regular raunchy humor, you'll like it. I know I did-great date movie too.

Good movie but disappointing sequel to superior Casino Royale
15 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw Casino Royale two years ago I found it somewhat unusual for a Bond film compared to the previous twenty prior to it. However, the movie grew on me as a Bond flick and as a reboot of the series and as a movie in general it was excellent.

Coming into Quantum of Solace I was expecting the same if not better quality of a film. In general, it was good but Quantum was just way too all over the place. My roommate and I walked out of the film very confused and it took me some reading up on the plot on Wikipedia to really understood what went on.

The movie starts right off with a car chase as Bond delivers Mr. White to MI6 for evaluation. Just when they think they have Mr. White in custody, one of M's own body guards betrays them aiding in White's escape. That was the last point I understood what was going on. From there it was one action scene after the next and you really could not follow what was going on. It seemed like Bond was just going from place to place on the seam of his pants. There are some classic moments for example when Bond is at the opera house and discovers Greene's plot by listening on his organization's secret meeting (I will tell no more). However, the whole idea of rebooting the series and stepping away from Bond movies with all action and no solid plot seemed to be destroyed here. It's almost as if all this competition from the successful Bourne series makes the producers feel they need to try the same things. The thing is, it works for the Bourne series...not so much for the Bond series. Bond and Bourne are too very different series and should be kept this way. I just hope that by Bond 23 they realize this and go back to the same basic formula that was Casino Royale.

Spiderman 3 Shows the Dark Side of the Web.....
4 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Spiderman 3 is a very interesting film. It's a great accomplishment in the way that it gets you thinking. Of course, it is complete fiction, but it relates to real life on a watered down level. Sam Raimi did successfully what Richard Donner mastered at in Superman the Movie. With just the right mix of humor and action, Spiderman 3 succeeds.

This movie is an experience, we go from seeing Spiderman be at the top of his game, to being tempted by evil, and finally to realizing his faults and starting over. Spiderman 3 gets you thinking as it allows you to see what temptation and the desire for revenge will do to a hero. Peter Parker turns to the dark side (excuse the Star Wars reference). He soaks himself in his greediness and acts in anger. This is a theme that has been repeated in so much literature and film but it is a true emotion. What is created in this film is a look at what happens when a hero is persuaded by the devil.

However, despite the apparent darkness Raimi provides comic relief so that people will be laughing anyway. Many people might take this as stupidity, but it is required otherwise this film would be a total drag. Honestly, if this film did not have comic relief, people would look at it as too dark. It is the balance of darkness and humor that gives this film its amazing feel. Unfortunately, there is not enough hours in the day to describe the emotions that this film evokes, but it is the central theme of love that can be taken away from this movie more than anything else.

Superior to Talladega Nights
1 April 2007
This was a huge improvement over the disappointing Talladega Nights. Don't get me wrong, Talladega Nights was a good movie, but very inferior to the masterpiece known as Anchorman. Like Anchorman was just so witty, Talladega Nights tried to do what Anchorman did (almost with the exact same plot, except with Nascar in Talladega, it wasn't the most original and it just was not as funny). Blades of Glory is not the most original plot or that far from the plot of Anchorman (Ferrell being caught up in his ridiculous ego, failing, and then making a comeback) but it takes it to a new level. They kind of use the same mold but twist it so it is not so much original but where when you're watching the movie, you cannot notice the similarities so much. It is a similar plot but a totally different ballgame. Also, Ferrell uses the same style of humor that he used in SNL. I just felt he was pulling more of his old tricks than trying to be funnier than the previous movie he was in. To make a long story short, the trailer to this movie really gives it no justice. It might look stupid but really is a fun way to spend an hour and a half of your life.
