The Boys: Glorious Five Year Plan (2022)
Season 3, Episode 4

It parodied a certain advertisement. And it had me collapsed on the ground from laughing.

Seriously though, The Boys in general is a fantastic series that so much more than just about superheroes being bad. It's social commentary done right. And the way it does that through comedy is fantastic. And this season thus far really highlights that. That's all I wanted to say.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Skin of Evil (1988)

A realistic portrayal of death: Sudden and meaningless.
23 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
To start off, I quickly want to talk about the plot. It's kind of bad. I'd go as far to say it's one of the weaker ones of season 1. A silly angry pile of raw oil is angry because he's lonely. There's pretty much nothing more to it.

But where this one really shines is how it undertakes death. It's sudden, swift and completely without meaning. Most media tries to face death far more poetically. A character might sacrifice themselves to save others. There might be a long build up to one's final moments in which they try to better themselves. But unfortunately, reality is far harsher. And I appreciate that it tries to stick to that.

Normally when it comes to death in films, I rarely break down into tears. That pretty much comes from how it's portrayed in the ways that I've talked about. A good example would be the MCU. Not everything about that franchise is good, but one thing I really liked is the long-term story they told leading up to End Game. I'm not gonna spoil anything from that but we all know who dies. And by the time of their funeral I couldn't help but feel melancholy. Sadness to see this beloved fictional person gone, but joy in the way they went down. It was poetic, especially after everything they've been through.

But here, in this episode? I didn't feel melancholy. I didn't feel an ounce of poetic joy. Just sadness. And honestly, I liked that. It's not often that I can be moved in such a way by film. But how they treated Lt Yar's death? It felt like someone I've gotten to know actually died. And I commend the writers of this episode for that.

TL;DR: Plot bad, amazing portrayal of death, referred to MCU for some reason, episode actually kind of good and made me cry, go watch again in two years or so.

Encanto (2021)

Both visually and emotionally stunning.

I don't really want to say too much about this film here. But that's pretty much because it's an experience.

Graphically, it is rendered beautifully. It's only in recent years that we kind of realized how much particle effect can bring to computer animation and video games and here you can see it in full effect.

The story is fantastic as well. It has a lot of great messages about how to keep relations with your entire family healthy that a lot of us can learn from. And even though I don't have too much contact with my own extended family, I do feel like I took away a few valuable lessons.

Go watch it, it's definitely worth it. You won't regret it.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Return to Kamino (2021)

It really is the end of an era, huh?

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is fantastic, but left me feeling a bit sombre. Which actually is a good thing. We all knew the clone wars had come to an end, and the Republic turned Empire. But to see the final blow to this beloved period? It hurts. This episode achieved what it set out to do. And honestly, for someone like me - Who has followed the Clone Wars and it's lore thoroughly - this is one hell of a way to end things off.

Basically, this hits harder than order 66. And I love it.

Probably not a good flick if you easily get motion sickness.
20 January 2021
But damn, is this film good. It basically takes a gimmick and runs with it, and surprisingly pulls it off as well. This films is basically like porn in some ways: You come for the action and stay for the plot. The plot being Jimmy. Jimmy is great.

There also was a crossover with Payday 2 a long while back making Jimmy a playable character. Funnily enough, this means that this film is set in the same universe as John Wick, Reservoir Dogs, Hotline Miami and Scarface. It's a confusing mess, but I think it adds a lot of flair to some loosely connected films.

So yeah, go watch this film. And if you start to get dizzy and nauseous during this movie, congrats. You're now officially diagnosed with motion sickness.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Victory and Death (2020)
Season 7, Episode 12

The series that possibly made the Prequels beter than the original.
7 May 2020
I always were a fan of Star Wars. I always dug deep into the lore. But I never appreciated the Prequels that much. Always thought they were just nothing more than watered down politics and a decent representation of Sidious' master plan. But then I started watching The Clone Wars. It's been one heck of a rollecoaster and in the end I have gotten a lot more appreciation for the Prequels. And once I heard season 7 got pulled from cancellation I couldn't be more happy. To finally see the series nicely wrapped up was a dream come true. And I can say that it did more than deliver.

The first few episodes pull you back in. But halfway through is where it really picks up. The sudden change from the John Williams style soundtrack to the more industrial synths of Kevin Kiner's Shattered during a certain section is a nice change. It doesn't sound much like Star Wars, but I think that's a good thing. It really makes you feel anxious. And if you seen it, you know you should be.

But in the end, I think the Clone Wars really made me connect with the Prequels and in my mind, made them a good competitor to the Originals. And at least for me, made the Prequel era a lot more interesting. Maybe even better than the Imperial era.

The most heart wrenching story to be told in cinematic history.
9 August 2019
The emotional rollercoaster that was Episode 9 had me sitting at the edge of my seat at all times. Although usually I am against cliffhangers and sequel baiting, I think that in this instance it was justified. Sven is the goodest of boys.
