The Good Place (2016)
Funny, clever and educational all at the same time!
I'm super picky when it comes to leaving 10 star reviews but this is really worth it. It really is genuinely educational, whilst still from being hysterically funny. It's cute and worthwhile. It's very clever, without being at all taxing. All the characters are wonderful and very well examined, even the ones you're supposed to hate! My favourites are Janet and the judge, with the central character, Ellanor coming in very close behind. Even the super minor characters, like the 'heaven' postmistress, and 'the doorman' are wonderfully observed and super well performed. This could have gone on for at least two more more seasons, and I would have been very happy. I've just completed watching it right through for the third time. I'm sure I will do that again at least once. Hugely recommended 😁
Bridgerton (2020)
Jane Austen it ain't! (tiny spoiler)
What a lot of camp nonsense, and I loved it!
The historical accuracy leaves a little to be desired. If people of colour had the respect and social position back then that is portrayed, the world would certainly be a better place now than it is. At first, I thought this was just colour blind casting, but the issue of race is, very briefly, addressed in the dialogue.
Fabulous costumes, acting, production values in general.
Looking forward to where they go with a second season. As Daphne and Simon's 'Disney prince and princess, but with shagging', story has been told, I'm assuming they'll be looking at the other characters in more detail. There's plenty of scope.
I guessed who Lady Whistledown is ;)
Trainwreck (2015)
Meh
Certainly amusing, with a few actual LOLs, but nothing out of the ordinary. John Cena is a good sport. Amazing performance from Tilda Swinton, who plays bitch boss from hell. I didn't recognise her until I read the cast list for another reason, which I always think is a sign of a good performance, even though I hated the character, (I don't think anyone could possibly do otherwise).
Watch it if you're into rom coms, but come in with low expectations to avoid disappointment.
Ted (2012)
You'll either love it or hate it
(quite minor) SPOILER ALERT
If you're a fan of McFarlane's TV work I'm mostly referring to Family guy you'll love this. I did. There's a lot of Perter Griffin in the Ted Character. No chicken fight, but look out for the duck. Lots of 80's pop culture references (the friend I went with totally missed the Raiders of the Lost Ark reference), including the obligatory Star Wars moments.
If you don't know McFarlane's work and don't like fart/stoner humour you might hate it.
There's quite a bit more action than I expected. On the whole it was and enjoyable 106 minutes.
