Fight Club (1999)
Asks questions, you find the answers
Fight Club, goes against the very thing it is supposed to be. Films are typically viewed as forms of escapism, Fight Club encourages us to rid our lives of escapism. The fact it is a movie allows it to show more extreme scenarios, that could never occur in our daily lives, but Tyler asks questions of the narrator, and as we relate to this narrator, we feel these questions are being asked of us aswell. We may never be held at gunpoint, and interrogated about what we want to be, but Fight Club, allows us to confront our own mortality, and realise, that if death can come at any time, why shouldn't we do the things we want to do, why should we continue working jobs we're not satisfied in, just to make money, that we cannot take with us after death. Fight Club encourages us to be honest with ourselves, to embrace pain, to embrace sacrifice, and to take a long hard look at ourselves, and reflect on what we can do to achieve satisfaction in our lives. Although, the narrator creates the personality of Tyler Durden to overcome the fears in his life, it is through creation of this alter ego, he becomes satisfied with who he has always been. It;s fast pace, and satirical elements make it entertaining, but it's thought provoking dialogue, is what brings people back for repeat viewings.
