Dead Silence (2007)
7/10
Solid horror endeavor
15 August 2021
Dead Silence is a ghost story with bite. It's revolves around Jamie Ashen a widower haunted by his wife's strange unexplainable murder and goes to his old home town to search for answers.

I'll start off by saying I've never been a fan of the saw series however James Wan did a good job and this story wise this is a really well executed horror film, however it's not without it's flaws or shortcomings. I grew up reading goosebumps books and Night Of The Living Dummy gave me nightmares that involved my stuffed animals killing me while I slept. So, this film reminded me of that and drove this film home for me. This film is no masterpiece however it is often overlooked and deserves a second viewing regardless of it's mediocre passable acting, ending, and sometimes slow pacing. The story is executed well, the dark color scheme visuals are nice and the scares and mystery are entertaining as well as enjoyable. 7/10.

Being (I) (2019)

My god lance, what are you doing to me
14 August 2021
The concept of this film is simple and bare bones. Joseph a member of the Byrne family and friend of townsfolk disappears and people believe he's simply just left town, he randomly appears as his family and friend are having a party, then strange events begin to occur.

I'll come clean, I bought this film because it had Lance Henriksen, one of my favorite actors, him and B-movies tend to mix well or at least decently, however this isn't case for this film or any actor in this film for that matter. This film drags on and on and it feels like borderline torture at some moments. If you pick this film up prepare to be plagued by bad acting, laughable dialog, and a mess of a story. I've watched a lot of cheesy and laughable horror films and was able to at least able to find some aspect of enjoyment out of them, this film doesn't have any ounce of enjoyable content. I get making a film on a low-budget is a difficult task, but this film honestly is a waste of creativity (if there was any involved in the production and writing of this film) and everyone's time who was involved and it feels very insulting to the viewer.

I really wanted to find some enjoyment out of this film and the premise makes it seem pretty decent and an enjoyable watch but no not at all. I'd stay clear of this one and if you see it in the bargain bin, hide it from others to prevent the pain this movie causes. 1 star for the premise and for Lance Henriksen.

Blind Date (1984)
7/10
Interesting and enjoyable giallo entry.
8 June 2021
Blind Date is a unique giallo flick with a decent amount of substance. It follows the story of Johnathan Ratcliff whose life is changed dramatically when he loses his sight in an accident, but he's lucky that an experimental sonar device has been created which when installed restores their sight. He agrees and becomes the first to try this new technology. This happens while around the city an un-named killer armed with a surgical scalpel murders beautiful women.

This is probably the best out of the work I've seen from Nico Mastorakis, his direction and camera work is very polished on this film. The killings are very tame and the visual effects for John's point of view are dated by today standards, but those aspects don't take away from the film. The Hitchcock styled story with a mix of Sci-Fi is excellent and where the movie shines. The performances from the actors in this flick aren't the most memorable but, some acting is bad from the minor characters however the leads serve their roles and do a good job. I found myself losing interest in the film at some moments but it would quickly draw me back in.

You could do a lot worse when picking an 80's horror thriller, especially considering it's currently free with prime. So I'd recommend this flick if you enjoy B-movies of this style.

Hollows Grove (2014)
2/10
One of the worst I've seen in a while.
7 June 2021
I will start by saying I do enjoy independent low budget horror flicks, however this is just dreadful in almost all regards. Hollows Grove is a found footage B-movie that is a blatant rip-off of Grave Encounters. It follows the same exact premise almost bit by bit. Basically a group of TV paranormal investigators go to an orphanage with a dark past to film a new episode and all hell breaks loose.

Sadly, I had hope for this film even though I knew it was a rip-off of Grave Encounters. I was hoping it would improve upon Encounter's short comings, boy was I wrong. The first problem I noticed immediately was the terrible writing. Almost all of the characters act like Beavis and Butthead, I get were supposed to hate them, but the writers went absolutely overboard. I really don't understand how I'm supposed to feel empathy for any of them when they're scumbags.

The next issue I had with this film is the terrible acting, only Lance Henriksen was some what decent and he has probably less than 4 minutes of camera time.

The script is the biggest problem, the jokes are terrible and take up most of the dialog and the scares are pretty par for the course.

Just don't waste your time with this one, I was more than disappointed. I wish people would respect the found footage subgenre more but, this is exactly why most don't. Please just watch Grave Encounters for a better found-footage horror experience.

Sensation (1994)
3/10
Sensationally bad
23 May 2021
Sensation is an early 90's erotic thriller with a great cast and quite a unique premise. Lila (Kari Wuhrer) is a college student and an artist whose picked for a very unique study. She is tasked by psychologist Ian Burton (Eric Roberts) to sense items for feelings or who they belonged to. Soon she begins seeing violent and sexual visions caused by the items which leads her to believe he must be the killer.

All of the above got me interested and hankering watching this and I was severely disappointed. I like erotic thrillers and this era was the goldmine for them Color Of Night, Jade, etc. Etc. Sadly the only good thing about this film is the cast and introduction. There is little to no substance to this film, nudity took up an unruly amount of time and felt like it was there to pad the weak script. I generally appreciate the mystery aspects of these style of films, but even that aspect was quite boring and predictable.

This film is one you should skip, the performances are good but forgettable. However the rest of this film is very much a waste of time. I hate being hard on film makers because it's an art and artists want their pieces of art to express something however this expresses nothing of value or interest in my opinion.

3 out of 10 for the great cast and good acting.

Very surprised, this film is a diamond in the rough.
17 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this film with no prior knowledge expecting it to be another forgettable found footage flick. I was pleasantly surprised to watch a creepy, tension filled horror film with an original story.

The setup is that a group composed of pathfinders, a psychologist, explorers and researchers set out to find the truth of what happened to the townsfolk of Friarsberg, New Hampshire when one day they inexplicably ventured into the forest leaving behind their belongings and ending up mysteriously dying or going insane. The tension is built up psychologically and the atmosphere is unsettling whether it's the unexplainable music, disorienting sounds it made me on edge.

Seeing the group travel this path slowly becoming more uneasy and distressed as well as other just losing it. The film is a perturbing decent slowly into madness and insanity.

It's a disturbing film that blends 1970's style slow burn horror with modern elements of the genre. The films imagery and idea stuck in my head were so unsettling, that I thought about this film for quite a few days after seeing it. The ending is a little underwhelming but, still this movie remains one of my favorite modern horror films. I recommend it because of it's unique story, convincing acting, and great writing.

The Wind (1986 Video)
5/10
Decent and fun thriller but forgettable.
13 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Wind is a movie directed by Nico Mastorakis known for directing the video nasty classic "Island of Death" but, this flick is more polished less bloody and has a small body count. The story is decent and interesting Sian Anderson (Meg Foster) a writer a getaway to a small village in Greece to write her next novel, when she arrives and a witty landlord (Robert Morley) greets her and leaves warning her about the danger of the strong wind in the area. What she doesn't know is that her vacation is about to be a fight for survival as the psychopathic Phil (Wings Hauser) loses it and begins killing. This movie is stylish and sleek with beautiful scenery, good acting, and some decent tension at some points however the movie begins to drag about 3/4ths of the way through. The unnecessary side plot meant to fill the running time of the movie and some-what predictable script and cheesy one-liners really show. The actors are really giving this movie their all but the script left a lot to be desired.
