Spoilt by the Hollywood Ending
6 July 2004
Throughout the film we're told that the Hero chooses a path where he must sacrifice a personal life in-order to be the hero, yet this is all spoilt in the last 5 minutes when we discover that the Hero can also have the girl. It feels as if Sam received a "note" from the executives instructing him they needed an upbeat ending and thus it feels like a kludge

That said the rest of the film is pretty great, there were one or two moments when the story drooped (typically when the characters were emoting) and some of the effects do look a little too cartoony (maybe they came from the heavily adveritised spiderman game).

Also not sure about so many people having seen spiderman without his mash, surely one of the people on the train would be straight off to the Bugle to describe spidey.

A return to form
4 April 2004
Judging by the comments so-far posted, it seems as Kevin Smiths fanbase falls into two broad churches. Those who think that "Jay and Silent Bob" was brilliant and those who think it's Smiths worst movie ever.

The stoners who seem to make up his audiences in "An evening with Kevin Smith" will probably see this as a sell-out. Howeverit's a good film, not brilliant but certainly a good film. Okay so it's a bit "Hollywood" in that Father learns to love his daughter (whom he blames for causing the death of his wife, and learns to be a good father, bringing up his daughter single handedly (well with help from his father and his fathers drinking buddies), and Ben's dash back to the school is a bit reminiscent of "About a Boy"

But thankfully KS steers well clear of many of hollywoods cliches, it doesn't end with everything wonderful, it just ends

Highly recommended

An ideal Sunday Afternoon Movie
4 August 2003
Okay so it's not the most thought provoking movie and it's full of plotholes but sometimes you just want to go to the cinema, switch off and watch a fun movie and this is an ideal film for that. The film was well timed as there were very few times when I found the film dragging and at least it didn't feel the need to wade in at over 2hrs and the tightness benefits.

If you find yourself with nothing to do one afternoon go and see it, there are worse ways of killing time

Okay-ish
15 July 2003
Why is it that every blockbuster now thinks that it has to come in at over 2hrs, some judicious editing especially in the fight scenes and this film could have come in at about 1hr 40 and been much tighter for it. Instead the film finds itself in the doldrums for long periods at a time.

Johnny Depp as the eccentric Captain Sparrow is wonderful, Orlando Bloom is so-so, in several fight scenes you were half expecting him to whip out his bow and fill the enemy full of arrows.

Jack Davenport, plays Jack Davenport, a stiff English middle class guy, just as he plays in Coupling and Ultraviolet but it's nice to see him getting exposure on the Big Screen

Better than you'd think
28 April 2003
I avoided going to see this at the cinema, opted against renting it at Blockbuster or watching on PPV but eventually it arrived on HBO and with nothing better to do whilst waiting for friends to turn up before going out I watched it and I'm glad I did

Raised on programmes like "The Water Margin" & "Monkey" and the standard fare of Bruce Lee films this film hit the mark again and again, what with attrociously dubbed voices and blatant rip-offs from other films (I don't care what others here have said I liked the Cow fight especially the Matrix take-off with the milk projectiles).

I also loved some of the asside pieces (like the children playing in the street singing "we are children, we are children"

The ending was a bit ropey with all the hallmarks of "we don't know how to end the movie" but I'd certainly recommend watching it on HBO, buying it maybe not

Stands up in its own right
5 January 2003
Having not seen the play I can only comment on it as a film and as a film it was pretty good. My viewing experience was slightly spoiled by being so close to the screen because the theater was sold-out and thus some of the quick edits caused the brain to scramble as it tried to make head-or-tail of what it was seeing.

The film had a narrative that didn't seem to be there merely as a means from getting from song to song and timing wise is was just the right length, 20 minutes longer (2hr films seeming to be the rage these days) would have been too long.

Strangely enough did anyone notice that Catherine Zeta Jones looked very much like the character she was playing in the "Time after Time" film within America's sweethearts

The film that wrecked the British Film Industry
21 September 2002
Following the disasterous Revolution, this film was pretty much the final nail in the coffin of Goldcrest and thus the British Film Industry. The film is absolute pants, it's full of music from the attempted mid-80's jazz revival and based on a book & author that was briefly popular at that time and has deservedly sank back into obscurity. Temple searched for ages trying to find Suzette and came up with 8th Wonders Patsy Kensett another person who was briefly popular at the time. By the time the film came out of post production the Jazz revival was over, as was Kensett's career and the film met a totally uncaring film public.

Mediocre would be an overstatement for some of the worst/campest/cheesiest acting to ever grace the British silver screen watching it almost 20 years on and the film is truely cringeworthy.

Humdrum
20 September 2002
I found myself tolerating this movie as it neither captivated me or bored me sufficiently to leave early. Though I could quite happily have left and cared nothing for how it ended. The shots inside the British Museum were interesting and I 'll certainly go there again, but way too many close-ups of Gwyneths face -I didn't realize she was so freckly-The film can be summed up in that large parts of it are set in Lincoln surely one of Englands less interesting towns and it matches the film.

Enjoyable
14 September 2002
I enjoy this film, it's a well crafted film that has a depth (e.g. references to the characters within the Canterbury Tales) that I suspect that most of the target audience would never pick-up on. The main casting is solid and a lot of the the action sequences are incredibly well shot.

For those who have the DVD then the Directorts Commentary is one of the best there is going into detail that shows many other commentaries to be truely woeful.

Enjoyable

Ok the film wasn't going to win any awards and it is pure bubblegum, and it is a modern update on "It's a wonderful life". But it's just come out as a cheap release on DVD and there are a lot worse ways of blowing $13. You get a film that has a surprisingly strong cast but for most they were still a year or two from becoming B list celebs. However it's an enjoyable way of passing an hour and half just don't think too much in it.

A Channel 4 Film
2 February 2002
The summary probably doesn't mean much to our American breathern but it is a very English film, it has a dark humour and many many references that set the scene but can past un-noticed otherwise (Showing what a sad life he leads we see he has a Ladybird book of the Sea).

The film is quite funny, not in an hilarious way but it does have its moments (When she presents him with his discovered porn stash), I can't say I found it particularly tense and it did drag a tad about 3 quarters a way through.

There's also quite a bit of sex (not graphically so) but enough for a couple to leave the not very packed cinema.

Overall a better than average film and one I'll probably get on DVD when it comes out.
