Warning: Spoilers
A lot of patience is required for this crime drama. Long episodes in a long season. Our hero, Sarah Lund goes a-hunting for a white whale with red herrings as bait, but it all comes off a bit fishy.

For the first ten episodes we're constantly fed this will she or won't she move to Sweden thread, but we KNOW the main character is not going to abandon the case with more than half of the series to run!

The political games from Town Hall are interesting at times, but in the end are completely irrelevant to the murder?

The grieving parents are brilliantly acted, but episode to episode I bounced from sympathizing to disliking.

Sarah Lund comes across as bloody minded and determined, dressed for a Christmas dinner and chewing on her thoughts... Staring into the middle distance and waiting for an intuitive clue to solve the case, after half a dozen disasters she gets it!

I found the music a bit campy and distracting. If this is Nordic Noir how about some low chords to build the tension? The music says melodrama, not drama.

I liked the various stories. The effects of a murder on the family, how politicians try to use tragedy for political gain, a female cop in a male dominated force... Any would make a nice (mini) series. But trying to knit them all together proved too hard. Instead of a beanie we got a tea cosy.

That said, I'll probably put the kettle on and try season 2. I am able to binge it for free, not sure I would have stuck with it week to week when it was released.

Still good, but...
2 March 2024
If I had written this review fifteen years ago I would have definitely given it ten stars. As a teenager catching random episodes on tv I was intrigued, but it was bounced around time slots here in Australia, making it hard to catch.

For years I had the first season on VHS, then in 08 I got all seasons on DVD and binged for months. As a previous review mentioned, it's a great show to immerse in alone, almost becoming friends. My favourite episodes involved the way people would react to natural occurrences or seasons, mystical with both feet on the ground.

I found the DVDs again a few weeks back and had another go, after season two I was questioning why I haven't watched it for so long! I'd found my friends again! But from season three onward there are too many dull episodes. Given the first two seasons total fifteen episodes, then each season after that is individually over twenty episodes, it's no wonder I felt a bit bored at times.

There are still beautiful episodes amongst the fillers, 'A hunting we will go', 'Northern Lights' and 'Kaddish for Uncle Manny' to name a few. As a young man it turned me on to various poets, philosophers and ways to view the world. I always liked the diversity in age amongst the characters.

It's Inspirational, not aspirational: A philosophy in tv that is unfortunately forgotten and what makes Northern Exposure so special all these years later.

Curry Tagliatelle?
22 February 2024
I never really saw any similarities between Italian food and Indian. Outside of their best known ingredients being new world imports (tomatoes for Italy, chillies for India). But David really has a go at trying to marry them up. Poorly.

I have to admire his enthusiasm, but that only gets him a couple of stars. The third star is for him finding middle class Indians prepared to indulge him and his ridiculous recipes.

I love Indian food and like to pick up new recipes or techniques. Same for Italian food. But instead we get a Canadian making himself at home and disappointed with the quality of Indian olive oil?

Perhaps it's his style that grates. And like parmesan on a korma, it just doesn't work for me.

I've lost count of all the recipes or tips this series has given me. Maeve travels the world without leaving Australia!

Each episode covers a country's cuisine, with essential tools and ingredients followed by a few recipes from a home cook or chef.

Maeve herself is affable and well spoken, clearly building a fun rapport with the guests in each episode, quite unlike some of the wooden, post MasterChef types we are bombarded with.

The follow up series' Earth, Water and Fire offer a lot more recipes (including the best satay sauce recipe) with occasional cameos from guests of this series.

Love your work Maeve. (And your tops😁)

A hero called Gerry
12 February 2024
A movie that is on annual rotation for me. A zombie movie for the squeamish who don't want to see a small intestine whilst chewing on their popcorn.

I love the music and scale of destruction shown. Instead of a close up of several zombies nagging into flesh, we get viral waves of chaos across several time zones.

Into the maelstrom steps our reluctant hero, Gerry (Pitt). Recently retired from an unknown role in the United Nations, Gerry is pressed into service to act as the chaperone to the scientific effort to combat the puzzling virus.

Bouncing from the US, to Korea, the Levant and UK, our ever observant hero works to solve the puzzle in a unique way.

If you like your zombie movies full of gore, you may be disappointed. I don't hate gore, it's just some movies rely too much on it. If your triggered by acronyms like UN or WHO you'll love to hate this, but if you want to see a different take on the zombie genre I'd recommend.

A convenient plane crash perhaps the only flaw (along with a convenient syringe), but extra kudos for giving the jacked Matthew Fox a role to shine in.

Finally a zombie movie you can watch over dinner. And finally, a hero called Gerry!

Warning: Spoilers
My favourite Law and Order. It must be one of the first tv shows to poach a Hollywood star. D'Onofrio's Goren made the show, but his partner, captain and ADA were all well done too.

Unfortunately season six starts with a shock. Besides new cast members (by now it had been done many times) we get new camera work, which can seem like daytime soap operas. And the music takes a distracting turn, in the fourth episode we get a chase scene with 70's music. Groan. By the start of season seven I just had to laugh.

There's still good episodes, but more forgettable ones too. It was always such an intimate and small cast, so choosing to switch more than one at a time hurts it. The old Captain and ADA are missed. Goldblum comes in strong in season eight, but by then he's needed to quirk up another stale cop show.

But those first five seasons are brilliant and worth revisiting. I liked the fact the personal lives of all was understated and not driving the show (in the first five seasons!). The Goren/Eames relationship is brilliantly done, subtle but strong, much like Mulder and Scully. There was plenty about Goren that was hard to believe, his intellect, interests, skills, history and empathy... But it was New York in the early 2000's, impossible things could happen.

For the Muskovites
22 January 2024
Not a lot to chew on here, largely a bunch of people who made a lot of money on Tesla complimenting or gushing over their idol. One guy is negative, but we're told he lost money.

The documentary had some chances to dive into some interesting topics, (love him or not, Elon is interesting as he's so opinionated), but it kept going back to Tesla and it's believers. A lot is said about him using Twitter, but it's not until the last five minutes that they discuss his acquisition of it.

Rather than a documentary about who, how and why Elon Musk is... We get in depth interviews with people touched by the dude and his greatness. Which is what it says on the tin I suppose, but it's a bit dull.

Warning: Spoilers
I cannot say I'm a dyed in the wool Wes Anderson fan. Loved Rushmore, liked the Tenenbaums, didn't mind others.

The all star cast left me wondering if this movie needed a cast of nobodies to do it justice? The characters themselves are brilliant, I liked almost all of them and their autistic style (my son is autistic, so I'm not having a go there). But an A list cast clocking on for ten minutes fell flat.

The movie didn't bother breaking the fourth wall, it built a doorway which I constantly leant against. Making getting into it a challenge.

Was it an exploration of grief, or technology, or the meaning of movies/plays/life? In the end I had difficulty thinking as the movie just kept up a steady stream of monotone questions and ended with a cultish chant that I just didn't feel.

Perhaps this film is a deliberate puzzle, or magic eye piece, into which you have to stare through before some beautiful moment of clarity appears.

But I'd have to watch it again to discover it.

It's a comedy!
9 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't realise till three quarters in that this was supposed to be a comedy! (When Cooper went all Forrest Gump on his superior) The few laughs I'd had till then had been me laughing AT the movie. Especially the dancing.

Unfortunately because I was waiting for a dramatic bloodbath I perhaps missed a few more jokes. I also disliked all the characters, which was building up to make the bloodbath worthwhile. After my realisation I still had doubts, hoping for a chest to explode till the final scene.

Knowing it's a comedy now, I'm sure if I watched it again I might appreciate the comedic range of all those serious actors. But given I only discovered the plot (or point) when the twist showed up at the end... Meh.

I still heart Huckabees though.

Beautiful cinema
23 November 2023
Unfortunately I was too young to catch this at the cinema, I can only imagine how beautiful that experience would have been.

Aside from it's great cast, the scenery and soundtrack are the true stars of this movie. The story is rather straight and predictable, but so beautifully done in all aspects.

I have not read the novel, but I feel movies that reflect rather than interpret the source material leave themselves without wriggle room. And if the movie steers away from the book at times, at least you can re-read the book.

I did take a star off for the musket skills on show. No matter how many times I watch this I'm always distracted by the speed of reloading and accuracy shown here... But it's a minor quibble for me.

Beautiful movie to turn the lights down, volume up, to.

Rick at his best
23 November 2023
I've really come to enjoy Rick Stein's blend of travel, cooking and history. And he definitely got better at it with each series. This series and his travels from Venice to Istanbul are my favourites, although I quite like his long weekends too.

He's stopped dropping in on insufferable expats, doesn't sound like a coloniser abroad and keeps the banter with his film crew light and funny.

I don't mind his seafood cooking, but who can afford it? So a trip through Mexico with it's cheaper recipes appeals.

I collected quite a few (slightly tweaked) recipes from his shows, including a couple from this one. Thanks Rick.

I still like it
20 November 2023
This film isn't totally true to the book, but as we now know, the book is not totally true either!

I suppose it's hard to be too upset at a con man lying. That's what they do. Compulsively. For profit.

The film (and the book) don't really explore the motives behind the lies. Like why didn't the bright young man study and train to be a pilot? Because he had no respect for Pilots, or anybody. Everyone was his plaything.

His tale is one of style, not substance. So I didn't mind the playful way Spielberg portrayed him.

It's still a fine movie. I even read the book again recently and still enjoyed that too. But would the book have been published if it was submitted as a novel?

Chuck Barris, James Frey and others have confessed to lying in their books. It's time Abagnale did the same. But there's the rub, who would believe a con artist?

Maybe it will age well?
9 October 2023
I had no idea this film existed until last week! Reading the cast I had higher hopes than I should have, as since Lucas sold his creation to the Empi.. I mean Disney, it's been pretty consistent nonsense. The films look good, and several plot points hark to a throw away line from the originals, but it's nonsense. (The exception being Rogue One. Literally based on one line in Episode 4, but did it well)

I did like the way the most annoying character in this film gets killed off pretty quickly, I thought that was a nice gift for long suffering Star Wars fans who despise Jar Jar or the Ewoks, but reading reviews here I gather many were still offended.

If your a Star Wars fan you'll probably give it a go, but try not to take it personally if Han ain't as cool. If your not a Star Wars fan you should be nervous... The Empi.. I mean Disney, is coming for you.

Da da da da, da-da, da da-da
18 August 2023
I was never much of a fan of Friends, but through pure saturation I couldn't help but see a lot of it back in the 90's. So when I heard Seth MacFarlane was making a parody set in space I was optimistic.

How disappointing. Looking back, I was wrong to be optimistic. Set 400 years in the future, the self absorbed yet frivolous plots fell flat. So many speeches! I got lost mid episode on several occasions, so boring was the dialogue.

Seth MacFarlane commands the leading man role about as well as Schwimmer, but unfortunately is as funny with his delivery.

How about a couch on the bridge? A giant coffee cup to help out on Monday mornings? Will Ed and Chandler finally hookup?

I realised a few episodes in that Orville isn't a parody of Friends, it's a rip off. Made by a man who believes he could make a better version for himself, starring himself. I watched two seasons, probably won't watch more.

So if you really hate modern Star Trek, or miss the 90's... enjoy. But if you want sometimes humourous sci-fi with characters you care about, re-watch Farscape or Babylon 5.

For the purebloods only
12 August 2023
As a lifelong Melbournian with a family member who is a cooker I viewed this hoping for some insights regarding their beliefs. To better understand my family member and this disillusioned minority.

Very disappointed. It's a love letter to the major actors involved. Starring the major actors involved. For the major actors involved and their followers.

So if you rallied at the war memorial, compared lockdown to apartheid or the holodomor, charged a police line or simply took a global pandemic personally, then you'll love this. But if, like me, you were hoping for some substance and explainers, you'll be disappointed.

An extra star is for Topher, his delivery is almost worth the watch, but would have worked far better if this was supposed to be a comedy.

Instead, it's tragic.

Warning: Spoilers
Great house. Nice neighbourhood. Has a boathouse! She has a sexy overbite and he a sexy torso. Bargain! However...

After the fourth or fifth jump scare I was numb to the rest. For a short movie they really jammed them in, but most were pointless. (As a device to stop falling asleep watching wood chopping: it works)

Casting Ryan Reynolds as the 'putty in malevolent hands' was a good idea, but I just didn't buy it. If he was able to be a bit funny early on it may have helped. Instead he went from wooden to splintered.

All attempts to give the story some depth felt disjointed, then the history of the house was almost farcical. No, not built on a graveyard... No, not built on an old lunatic asylum... No, not just the house another American flipped out in and grabbed his gun... Oh wait, I think it was the second one. Pity it wasn't a pet cemetery, then Harry may have got some vengeance.

It's a good late night tv movie. But definitely a renovators delight... Maybe the next remake?

Remake or sequel?
29 May 2023
I had no idea this film was made till I saw it last night. I went in with one question: Remake or sequel?

I'm not a horror tragic, but quite enjoy the genre. For me, like many, the scariest horror scenes leave the "evil" to your imagination, so I'm sorry to say I chuckled a few times watching this when we got a glimpse of something creeping about.

The found footage angle was new and fun in the original, but was teamed up with all the myth making outside of the film at the time. I didn't mind the "book of shadows" sequel as it went conventional with its filming and had enough scares. But returning to the found footage device was perhaps a mistake. I would have liked a foot in both camps? Some conventionally filmed character development spliced in with the wobbly woods at night.

Instead I think they put a foot in both camps in terms of remake or sequel.

I still enjoyed it. Plenty of scares, plenty of dizzy victims running blindly into death and plenty of well crafted stick figures. Makes me want to watch the original again. Which must be a compliment for any sequel or remake?

A heavy giggle
28 February 2023
I think calling this film a dark comedy may be stretching the genre a bit. Much more jokes and quirky characters amongst a story of trauma, grief, hate and revenge.

Despite the good people doing bad things and bad people doing good things, it never felt convenient or manipulative. Rather it gave the characters depth and relatability, in a film where I never thought I could relate to any of the three main roles.

McDormand plays the mother of a murdered daughter, calling out the local chief of police to find the killer by putting up the titular Billboards. Harrelson plays the chief, unable to proceed with the nvestigation due to the lack of witnesses or evidence, whilst also suffering pancreatic cancer. Rockwell plays bad cop, racist, thuggish and insecure.

Other reviewers here have rightfully called out the unreal nature of some plot twists or dialogue. But it's where I believe the magic of the movie lies. As I hinted earlier, having a loved one raped and murdered in your home town sounds very unreal to me! (I also gather the good folk of Missouri rarely swear? Or marry women from Australia, no matter how beautiful?)

The ending is sudden. I nearly took two stars off because of it, but upon reflection, I was glad for it. So gave a star back. I'd recommend seeing this movie anticipating some grisly and sad outcomes, so the humour can sneak up on you. Very well crafted cinema.

Beautiful popcorn flick
15 February 2023
Definitely a movie I consume at least once a year. A classic and proper popcorn movie: just press play, go with the flow and be moved.

As adaptations go, it's almost word for word. Not so much an interpretation, rather a reflection... Think Cormac McCarthy's/ Coen brothers No Country for old Men. Pedants beware.

All actors are where they should be, with Max Von Sydow perhaps narrowly defeating Ethan Hawke in stealing the show. But even the bit parts are expertly played.

The music is another highlight. Given the nature of the story, with lots of timeline shifts, the music aids you in shifting focus.

Ultimately it's a hard movie to watch in a cynical mood. It calls upon a belief in people doing the right thing.

But let this movie in, and I guarantee the happiest tear will sting your eyes... And you'll love it.

Daddy issues in the USA
12 February 2023
So many times I felt hooked in this movie. But each time I was let down. Every time I thought I might like or relate or cheer on a character... I was let down.

I admire the scope but poo poo the execution. For all this flicks "gritty realism", I had zero investment in the realism. The grit got in the way. A shallow peek at consequences whilst ignoring motives.

A great cast acting their socks off is worth a watch. But I couldn't honestly say much substance lies beyond the Pines. The plot centres on a criminal (Gosling), an unethical prick (Cooper) and the criminals one time fling (Mendes) being torn between duty, love, oxy, freedom and the American dream.

As realistic as Ferris Bueller but half as fun to watch.

Classic
22 January 2023
Couldn't honestly say how many times I've seen this film since childhood... Funny every time.

It helps if you've seen most of the movies they're spoofing, but I've watched it with people who haven't seen Dances with Wolves or The Fabulous Baker Boys or Top Gun and they still enjoyed it. Which is where the skill in spoofing lies, creating an entertaining movie which is enhanced if you've seen the films being used, but not essential. Think Spaceballs.

I'm not much of a fan of Top Gun, but thanks to this film I actually don't mind it when it pops up on tv. Instead of cringing, I giggle. That said, I don't think Top Gun fans would be insulted by anything here.

Lloyd Bridges is a highlight.

Not close enough
21 January 2023
I can't help but think this is an Australian movie made for American audiences? It just lacks 'Aussie-ness' to me. Far too sentimental, much like a flag waving sepo war flick.

For a good read on the battle please read Lex McAulay's book.

A company sets out from base (Nui Dat) to search for mortar emplacements, but stumbles upon a regimental size force on their way to attack the base.

The added melodrama at Nui Dat was unnecessary and painful to watch. I can't help but think a few survivors or their families would be offended with the way they are portrayed here.

Perhaps because Australian films on Vietnam are rare I should be glad we got one, but not good, or close enough.

A nervous watch
21 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After ten minutes I got nervous. Any film that wanders into Manson territory will do that to me. Then Cliff picked a fight with Bruce Lee (perhaps unfairly portrayed, but to a purpose). I suddenly had a glimmer of hope that the ending may be "basterdized". Thankfully it was. There was still a twinge of sadness as the credits rolled and I remembered the true history. But when the dog food flew I practically cheered!

I've since watched the film a few more times and actually enjoyed the story of Rick, the actor struggling to stay relevant and his stuntman Cliff. But the ending gets me smiling every time. Proof that serial killers can be made fun of, if you have the courage (or clout) to do so.

Absurd, but fun.
19 January 2023
Perhaps because I caught this film by chance late one tired night, I never took it too seriously, or tried to solve anything ahead of Garfield. It's absurd. But in the best way.

It made me giggle a few times, made my skin crawl once or twice, and showed a different LA to what I've usually noticed in movies. The detective element contains most of the absurd, including some rather childish conspiracy theories, but again, I let it happen and enjoyed the ride.

The main distraction to me was placing the period. So many times I felt I was in the 90's then suddenly a smart phone appeared... Or a drone... Or a hipster.

Maybe the reason I like it is it's message, style and plot: their all different. Or at least long forgotten by most film makers.

Delightful to a point
19 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I rather shamefully admit I always enjoy this show when it pops up on the cooking channel. It looks beautiful, Rick's recipes are easily adaptable and delicious and there is enough tranquil scenes to make you wish you had the cash for such an adventure.

There is a theme with almost every ex-pat Rick meets on the journey however. On the last episode it hits you on the face; They are incredibly insufferable and love to chit chat and somehow have many negative things to say despite they're idyllic lives. Even Rick is a bit off in the last episode, lashing out at Van Gogh then gushing over an unknown bull fighter before drinking his fish soup.

I understand nobody's perfect, but if they could have edited out 'the insufferables' complaining, the show could have left an optimistic glow, like a sunny morning on a French canal?

So if you want some inspiration for some delicious french food, or french holiday. Spare yourself the last episode and enjoy...

And don't be English.
