Renfield (2023)
An enjoyable, if not slightly too long, comedy gore flic.
Enjoyable despite its flaws.
Came over pretty well, funny, gorey, entertaining and good CGI.
Cage and Hoult carry this film in a great way, they work, the rest of the cast were a little hit-and-miss, lacked any chemistry or screen presence.
Some of it looked to be part of a college film project, the scene and video quality were sub-par and felt awkward on screen.
Some of the CGI failed and didn't make sense, doesn't have to make sense, but it helps to portray the story and keep the flow going.
It was entertaining, but you could see and feel it had a limited budget and this tainted the overall feel of this film. I found the last 20 mins were dragging and i needed the loo!
Not really worth seeking out, if it's on and free, give it a go, fall asleep after an hour and don't feel you missed anything!
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
Hands up who thinks Steven didnt want to direct this one??!!
A sequel where only 4 cast member were bought back, and 3 of them were a blink, and you'll miss it moment!!
Yes Steven, we can clearly see that ILM has come along in great steps, but as is the norm these days, CGI does not make a film, it's the chemistry of ALL the incidents that come together to make a good/great film.
Remember, this film came about because the WORLD went nuts for dinosaurs, not because a great story needed to be put to film.
I came away feeling that Steven was only in the office 2 days a week for the making of The Lost World, maybe this should have been The Lost Cause!! This film lacked the Spielberg magic that so many of his passion projects contain, if the passion aint there, it shows!
Some scenes were really clunky, maybe just screwed up in the edit. Some characters were wiped out too early, others left in the plot far too long to warrant their presence!
It's OK'ish, but overall a miss of a sequel, 4.5, at a push!
Dark Angel (1990)
B movie gold.
As a stand alone B movie what else could you want, OK script, decent pace, original story and plenty of top-notch action, thank god there wasn't a love scene section that would have killed the pace mid-movie
I think all aliens go to the same shooting school, these and Stormtroopers can't shoot for shi$!!!
Dolph must have been a nightmare to work with, so many scenes were compromised by his actions, moving off the mark mid-scene, weird animated facial expressions that made you want to direct him to the men's room!! Let's hope his chesty homework was better than his acting.
I needed a quick movie fix and this delivered more than i had hoped,
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Before Scary Movie there was Dressed to Kill!!!
The first.30 minutes are from a weird place where the untouched dwell!!
The remaining 115 are pure comedy, and not the good type, the Mrs Brown's Boys type of comedy!!
I feel the focus may have steered too far in the direction of making certain women actors look glamorous rather than the story.
The script was messy/dated/disjointed and delivered in the best MDF fashion!!
The pace plodded along, with the annoying score that just seemed to get in the way at every turn, at barely a walking pace. I was left wanting at the end of most scenes, and the clunky editing just added to the pain.
Watch it to see how bad it is and how a thriller should not be complied!!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
I am souless.
Another souless effort that has the Guardians name slapped on it.
The script is written to a price, and this price is cheap cheap cheap!!!
The acting is, errrrr, wooden at best!!! Not really the fault of the actors, just the director and environment they have to act in, green screen and green suite for the entire film, sorry i mean CASH-GRAB!!!
Brings nothing to the screen that appeals to me and i would hope anyone that enjoys the art that is film making, an embracement of an effort to anyone who considers themselves an actor!
I suppose priorities need to be addressed, money for food on the table or the art of film making, the latter has never been considered!
Maybe i should rewatch the trilogy whilst drunk....then again!
The Boondock Saints (1999)
Willem had fun...
I sort of took me time getting round to this one, about 24 years, to be precise!!
The cast was pretty much on point, a few duff rolls. David Della Rocco gave a great performance, Sean Patrick Flanery had great screen presence but Norman Reedus showed that he is limited in his ability, no matter how hard he tries. The show stealer was Willem, he made it his own and gave a great performance that is otherwise lost in his other roles. Billy was a surprise, next time check out the cast list prior to pressing play!
The script was good, the pace was fine, and the acting was on point, the humour was quirky and much needed. Some characters just seemed to pop up and fill a scene, such a shame when they could have been fleshed out a little and contributed a lot more.
I feel Smokin' Aces pulled influence from this film, but then again, so many others must have gleaned a little from this bad boy judging by all the positive reviews.
Would i watch it again, at a push, if nothing else was available, not a great film just a good one, but not a repeat customer in a world saturated by so many greats.
A Most Violent Year (2014)
Such promise left with a WTF ending!!!
Can't praise this slow burner enough, until the end!
Script is on point, story on point, come to think of it, this film is on point, right up to the point when the credits roll!
Some of the plot lines could have been give a little more depth, substance and better dialogue to support them, but overall I enjoyed myself whilst taking it all in.
The location and videography all deliver, their new house left me scratching my head a little!
Now the WTF moment, that ending!!!
You know when you're listening to your fav rave choon and some idiot knocks the deck and the needle flys off into an alternate universe, that look on ya face, that's when i got with the ending of this film.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Season one, i liked, season two, OMG!!!
Yet another series that reflects so much of the current trend of shallow, disposable tripe that they call TV!
Season one showed good signs of growing into a decent reboot. The script was a little clunky at times and some of the characters were...a work in progress!
Season two has throttled back on script development and storyline to just concentrate on CGI, boring action set pieces and cheese!!
I think season two was handed to the B team and apprentices to run with, this will just fade into oblivion and probably struggle to get a 4th season if they carry-on the way this is going!
So many studios interfere FAR too much these days in TV and film that pretty much everything on the screen is a production based on a formula, AI generated tripe that lacks art, soul and passion.
Judge Dredd (1995)
The Dredd that the studio wanted!!
The studio needed convincing that this would work. They wanted it to be clean and not dark and depressing, required names to make it work, Stallone and Schneider, and required confidence in the project. Danny Cannon hadn't done much before this outing and i feel Stallone was given too much power in this film's making, Danny has allegedly said that he won't work with such an ego again!!
The film had a good budget, this was mainly spent on Stallone and the set. The film looks lovely, in a 90's lunch box art sort of way!! Great costumes, vehicles, set's, all made to look squeaky clean and 90's, the studio were happy, fans not so!! Special mention to the legendary vehicles that they made, the yellow taxi's that were made out of Land Rover 101 forward control vehicles have gained a cult following.
The pace was good, kept momentum and made sense.
The script, sort of worked when it worked and then sort of fell through the floor when Stallone opened his mouth!! I feel Stallone ruined this due to his lack of knowledge of the character and his ego taking centre stage.
Stallone is annoying, Schneider is not needed OR wanted and should just do one, all the other cast come across pretty well and put in good performances.
Overall, I think you get a pretty decent film, not a fan film, that came in the form of Dredd in 2012, the one that most can agree was the film the fans wanted, or at least the better one they got.
And, HE TOOK HIS HELMET OFF!!!!!! ;-)
No Way Out (1987)
Bad in so many ways, i can't feel the good reviews of others!!
Good ish story, but that's about it!
The casting seemed off from the start, no chemistry and poor character building. The only reason many of the cast made an appearance was because the studio needed popular faces. Biggest miss cast, Sean Young, she can't do a sexy sultry type, comes across forced, she is too tom boy/girl next-door!
The cinematography was just bad! The rescue scene on the ship at the beginning was comical, all it needed was Jaws to make an appearance!! Other scenes were just lazy and poorly planned in their execution.
The script....err.....good gawd it's dumb, even by 80's standards!!
Cliché riddled and aimed at daytime viewing audiences!!
If you view this through virgin eyes it will probably come across well, if you've seen any thriller then your toes will curl watching this tripe!!
Air Force One (1997)
God bless America
As long as they kill loads of people along the way and have you going WTF every few minutes!! This film's school report would be, could do better!!! The plane crash at the end is in the hall of fame for the worst CGI, like EVER, makes the Mummy look pretty good!
This was 80% budget on pay packets, they needed it to convince the cast to join, and then 2% script, 1% story and 17% on making a 747 bulletproof!
If it wasn't for the cast and the pace, this film would have been switched off after 20 minutes, maybe 30!
This would be a masterpiece if presented to the current crop of Marvel watchers, to all else it's a thumbs down!
Prey (2022)
Save your effort and skip
Want to know the reason people pirate films, this old pile of pants!!! Remember the path and journey most take to enter a profession, i think the editor of this pile skipped most classes!!! Decent story, OK acting, script could have been polished, and the final package is loose and awkward feeling. The art and flow are missing, guess it fits in really well with the current batch of toilet films that many seem to enjoy and give high praise!! 4 outta 10. Could and should have done better. A film that comes across like it was made by people who have heard of the word film and looked it up in a dictionary, just never seen one!!
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Too bad for DVD
The director should be ashamed of this tripe! A film so dumb but so reflective of today's audience and expectations of a film!!
It's a decent story, let down massively by a director out of his depth. The script is B movie, but they think it's an A!
Go back to Lego movies, where you can direct from the comfort of your armchair.
I know a film is more than just a director, this film fails in all aspects apart from CGI.
Batman Forever (1995)
Sparkles of genius amongst some iffy acting and poor scenes...
Some great, some awful, someone pass the popcorn. This film illuminated the good actors amongst the wannabes and filth. The film has all the elements to be a grand ride but comes up short at the end of the day and leaves you with a void. Val doesn't work well in this role, maybe this was the the point he lost focus and went Eastward. Nicole gave it her best but felt awkward and flat. Chris was dealt the bum hand and was the scape goat for this film.
Tommy shone like a gem and Jim stole the show in a way that only Jim could back in the 90's. Jim was the gold, jewel encrusted crown that, for me, saved the day. If ever a role was written for an actors scope then this was the perfect execution. Oh i almost forgot, I had sleepless nights after seeing Drew in this film. Ohhhhhhh mumma!!!
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
Iffy casting and an execution that needs work.
This didn't work for me. The story is good, just let down in its execution. It plods along at a snails pace with gaping holes in the story and poor acting. An actor is only as good as the direction they are given and a tighter grasp was needed to make this work. Maybe a classic was missed in the edit maybe it was never to be. Watch if nothing else is available and make your own mind up but I'd skip this poor effort if I was you.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Season one i could live with....season two!!!
Maybe having a different director for every episode isn't really helping the fact that the acting is dire and it feels like a series on a budget, very C grade. The scripts are cringe worthy and i do hope this series get's back on track....sooner rather than later.
