Don't Look Up (2021)
The first year of corona, recast as a story about a comet
Nearly every character and scene has a basis in the events that unfurled in 2020. The analogy of an impending planet killer comet is quite fitting. Reading other reviews, I wonder if some people watched the whole thing oblivious to the direct satirical commentary.
Death to 2020 (2020)
Bad jokes by familiar faces
Lots of star power, but it couldn't save this mockumentary. The jokes are predictable, shallow and crude. I turned it off after 20 minutes.
The Mule (2018)
Predictable but worth it for acting and storytelling
A fairly straightforward story with a novel moral woven throughout. Good performance by Clint Eastwood. Nice soundtrack, mostly swing. Good pacing with some surprises and tense moments. Satisfactory end.
Extraction (2020)
Good pacing, satisfactory plot
A decent action flick with good pacing and some interesting subplots. The close-up over the shoulder camera style adds to the suspense and grants a feeling of presence.
How It Ends (2018)
Suspenseful disaster road trip movie that dares to take an unusual exit
An interesting take on the disaster road trip genre that is full of suspense all the way through, and interspersed with beautiful scenery shots. It was nice to see some age-old movie tropes being cast aside, even subtly mocked (I'm referring to the campfire conversation). The ending makes total sense if viewed from the perspective of the characters and from the title (if you give it just a little thought). Very refreshing.
Meta: I see a lot of rage-voting took place. That's from viewers who apparently enjoyed the movie enough to watch it until the end credits, yet let their disappointment in a perfectly fine ending overshadow the rest of their experience.
La catedral del mar (2018)
Flat characters and unmotivated story
Based on the first episode, I could not watch any further. The characters are one dimensional and their motivations undeveloped. The story just seems to happen to them. Of course this is mostly in line with their dire situations, but this makes it excruciating to watch.
A lot of ground was covered in the first episode (10+ years), but that makes it blow past opportunities to flesh out the characters.
