Clarke has been trying every possible avenue to hold his family together.

I presume this is the American production's patriarchal influences on the writers?

Or possibly availability of others for filming during the pandemic? It provides the opportunity for both Sarayu Blue and Brian Tee to show their talents.

Truth is I'm relieved to see another one of the male characters show some vulnerability.

Every female that has a watched this so far must be empathetic towards Hilary also. I think her character required some depth, Im not sure a xenophobic mother helped Hilary's character's mother's personality, could've gone to the cutting room floor.

Margaret has been falling apart, Just enough to see if our theory about the persons behind Gus's trauma is correct.

I'm ready to know one way or the other. It's important to see characters written for actresses who once upon a time were only referred to as "of a certain age", talent certainly doesn't wane with experience or age. Are the other viewers ready to add a new counterpoint? I mean besides Dave's wanting to be an alcholic father.

Episode 3 reveals Mercy deep into her depressive guilt over Gus, while Margaret takes her management of guilt to hysterics, and to a lesser extent Hilary's husband does too.

Self loathing is a natural reaction some say to loss of a child. Statistically 75% of couples won't survive a child's loss. There's no doubt episode 3 is essential for the plots continuity, it does reveal Clarke and Hillary's characters in more depth. I think all women are beginning to wonder if we're actually investing in a Lifetime movie? Unfortunately I might not be the only viewers who is convinced I've already identified the link to Gus' disappearance. I appreciate again the cinematography, the location director's eye for framing. The episode ends drearily with Clarke and Margaret heading north toward New Territories/Kowloon/Shenzhen Bay Hwy before dawn.

Mongkok, Episode 2 of Expats is the second of a pairing with episode 1, The Peak.

Hopefully, viewers can binge these 2 together, in sequence, to gain the full grasp of past and present within this character driven plot. Many reviews have termed this a tragedy, or examination in grief. Albeit I completely disagree. This is life, with this chosen setting as Expats, not Hong Konger's, they're surrounded by bustling busy bright examples of lives, loves, the businesses that drive the Pearl of the Orient. The balance of lighting, cinematography matches both the beauty and density of Hong Kong. An island nation that's both full of beauty and intensity in more abundance than non Hong Konger's particularly are accustomed to. Authors and filmmakers remind us these characters are in unfamiliar territory in every sense compared to lives they're more accustomed to or were born into. The filmmaker and author have woven together the challenges of daily lives centered around three women who emerge from dramatic circumstances to find their ways forward with this episode offering brilliantly lit flashbacks, set against dramatic subtly lit present day events. These three women, Mercy, Margaret and Hilary blend perfectly into the multicultural landscape of Hong Kong, on the exterior. With each episode these womens inner character is revealed somewhat as a slow burn for Hollywood viewers. If not for the absence of any cantonese dialect, the leaning toward European dramas, it's not certain they'd be seen as Expats. This story set in 2014, when both English and Cantonese remained listed as the official languages of Hong Kong. Albeit, in day to day life of Hong Kong it's difficult not to pick up some working knowledge of Cantonese idioms and phrases, the series weakness and obvious targeting of only English speaking audiences. Mongkok represents in filmmakers visual sense the idealized Hong Kong. The remaining market streets that once flourished throughout Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and Macau. This is an essential episode paired with The Peak to set the plot and move the dramatic tone for the series. This will likely be a career launching series for actress Ji-young Yoo.

This is a book, a novel, transformed across media: as in film, or video medium, the sequential development of characters and plot shouldn't be surprising. It's sad to see low rated (teen?) reviews from those without a clue what they're watching. Please ignore too those suggesting a jump to certain episodes. With Expats, the books author also wrote a teleplay the first episode seemingly adhered to.

The following episodes will be crafted predominantly by the series creator Lulu Wang. These two women collaborating with the dramatic talents of Nicole Kidman are the perfect stage crafters for story and its development throughout a series. The Author, Janice Y. K. Lee is a Hong Kong born American author. Whereas Lulu Wang is herself from a background that makes up the most common expat resident of Hong Kong's population: born north in the mainland, then migrating. Lulu Wang's family of origin however migrated from Beijing to America. Combined we have a talented, well informed trio of women who can create through craft and inner personal experiences, the life of Hong Kong's Expat residents.

This first episode is comparable to the opening chapters of a book, where combined talents of filmmaker, writer and dramatic thespian introduce you to Hong Kong daily life for the upper middle class (considering the family reside atop The Peak),a week in the life of a Hong Kong English speaking residents, set in the last decade(2014). As a Hong Konger Expat myself, this is so far immensely interesting and somewhat relatable.

I recommend you immerse yourself in the story, whether you have any connection to Hong Kong or not. This power trio of women have successfully shared many stories with the world.

Please don't review on trivia, rather add such minor hang ups within this websites trivia section, if truly relevant. Based on these womens' histories and careers, I anticipate quality story and character developments, and memorable entertainment.

Watched it for the Pacino performance, thats worth the time on its own. Unfortunately the other cast arent of his caliber, and the screenplay writing could be better.

Based on a true.story, again seventy-five years on, America again finds herself fighting fascism, authoritarianism and thus the relevance of elements of WWII stories.

The.major differences today are home front battles against homegrown treason, fascism compared to the all time freshman defense and/or excuse of the applying First Amendment rights.

Of-course America is not in the middle of WWII, those purporting fascism and authoritarian threats against opposing beliefs while perhaps seeming life threatening, dont compare with battles fought on Normandy beaches, Antwerp, Pacific Islands and real life or death survival skills necessary during WWII.

Watch it for the Pacino performance alone,or for the recurring relevance of treason among our ranks. Its always hard to transform literary media into performance arts.

The screenplay writers werent on par with other Pacino choices. Not all stories translate well in anyones hands.

WWII history buffs and Pacino admirers should given this a go. After all, Al Pacinos work on screen wasnt abundant in 2021. If you do choose to watch, be certain to stay for the films epilogue.

Whats the point of this film beyond self promotion of Ajay Devgn? He was producer, director, lead actor in fictional hero role? Over the top? Many reviews criticize this as a copy and paste of either Denzel Washington's Flight-a totally fictional film, or Tom Hanks, as Sully, a truthful re-enactment of heroic aviation skills. No possibility of copying Sully, because when you read the actual investigation report for the flight used as a reference here, you immediately see how opposite of Sully this PIC (Pilot in command) really was. No Sully in the cockpit of JetAir flight 555. The actual investigation leads most to wonder how JetAir is still certified to fly across international borders, enter the EU or USA airspace. The Investigative process used to evaluate this incident was not up to international aviation standards in any way.

So back to whats the point? Aviation remains the safest travel mode on earth for humans in the twenty-first century. Thats however depending upon the customer being savvy enough to value their own safety first, avoiding certain regional carriers histories, incident & accident histories and ratings. Obviously valuing their lives enough to read the simple emergency cards, or valuing their vacation memories enough to keep a journal or diaty that includes the trip details for less frequent fliers sucha as Carrier, aircraft type and flight number. After all, if vacations are to be memorable, details are everything. Theres informative websites in various languages for consumers to do this. If consumers wish to fly blind, seeking only cheapest fares and treating aviation like a bus ride rather than the professional technical industry it is and what thats worth in terms of their lifes value, maybe thats the point. This film had quite poor aviation representation and apparently no expert technical consultants.

It wouldve been better as a cooy of either Sully, if based on reality, or a copy of Flight as total fiction, but its neither. JetAir555 did encounter a fuel incident. It was well covered by actual aviators and aviation mentors for free on YouTube. Save your money, see those instead, unless your a teenage Bollywood fan with a crush on Ajay, skip it. My rating is for a new directors efforts and investment.

This intriguing true life mystery has never been solved. If you enjoy true life unsolved mysteries, this one will enthrall you through the eyes of the isles only inhabitants, who've never been found to tell their tale of the high seas.

You're going to be watching a period piece about a barely <2yr old/new lighthouse located in Scotlands gorgeous Outer Hebrides built in 1898. This crew were dropped in 1900 to begin their labors.

The three characters jobs are in shifts 24/7, 6weeks on, before next relief crew arrives. This lighthouse was built 1898-1900, the missing guiding light and its personnel mystery was logged in 1900.

Certainly many conspiracy theories and other theories have evolved as we human beings beliefs and knowledge has also evolved over the past century plus. Poems, songs, and sailing shanties have been penned about this mystery over the decades. This cleverly penned drama will bring into the family as it was, of the only three there at the time of the unresolved mystery.

For the writers involved in this project to dive into the depths of these inter personal character's development was plausible, creative and requiring seasoned actors. Casting was indeed ideal, with native Scotsman Peter Mullan playing the paternal most experienced crew member "Thomas"; Gerald Butler playing the loving family man, the one with the most braun of the crew, working hrd daily as the breadwinner for his lovely wife and daughters home on the mainland. Butler's character, "James", has enlisted a new employ performed by Connor Swindells. ("Donald"). An ample lad, he'll be tested within an centimeter of his life right off. Proving his tenacity and amiable nature, the newest member of a crew is an affable sort, hopefully meshing well with the other two experienced men, all who's lives will depend upon their unfailing trust in each other.

Its up to Thomas and James to shepherd Donald along through his first north Atlantic storm, the shifts, and over all demands of the job and life on the Flannan Isles lighthouse 24/7. There's no residents on Flannan Isles, only the lonely light house; No harbor, only 2 landing sites, either or none approachable weather pending. The characters must be compelling to hold our attention, so casting was spot on. Thomas the "old School," pipe smoking, salt, played by Peter Mullan presents as the man who's seen it all over the decades, as well as the likable paternal sort you'd want as your friend to sing a tune with lightening the mood as they pass the storms, the long nights, the unscheduled happenings.

Without including any spoilers, settle in preferably with larger screen enjoy this classic Greek tragedy set among incredible scenery as the real mystery unfolds as seen through this writers eyes. It has a gorgeous settings and cinematography, while unveiling the perils of isolation upon a single large rock in the North Atlantic seas. The film was actually filmed on a handful of the outer Hebrides isles, so enjoy the visit! For the characters, supplies are to be dropped at intervals, seas permitting, less the unexpected visitors envisioned by the writers interpretation.

Consider the true experiences of these rugged individuals day to day: operating an essential life saving piece of safety for maritimers around the clock, in all weather, and with all newness of the technology and instruments of the day. These will reveal their own as yet undiscovered, elements of dramatic implications.

As for myself, I'm certain to watch again, for the location, the performances, the scenes of beauty unlikely to be visited in person.

Lets not forget-for the unsolved mystery to consider among ourselves- what these three endured? Presumably this film will also lead you to converse about your own experience of the presentation, or your own interpretation for the few known events of The Flannan Isle Lighthouse Mystery of 1900.

Miriam the adventurer! In her mid 70s, she's full of life, curiosity, get up & go, all while remaining mellow and non judgmental. I felt again in my early 20s when my bestie & I would rent camper trucks and head out to a new locale. Hop along for a tour of the great down under. Miriam's POV is so comfortable as she spends time with lifelong residents Dow under offering a unique deeper dive into lifestyles and celebratory events of local Aussies the viewer would likely never see if visiting as a tourist. Offering 3 episodes, the first asks "What's the Australian Dream?". My favorite was the second episode when Miriam truly mixes it up with all walks of life from successful ranchers to a local drag show. Third episode of this in depth 1 month exploration asks what is "Australian Lucky" can you own Australian Lucky as both a "Have" & a "Have Not"? Looking forward to her next Aussie adventure. .

While not a Sci-Fi fan, this stellar cast drew me in and held my attention throughout the series. Masterful performances. Main characters are relatable, so well acted, the series will captivate you. While others complain of slow burn, I felt the time was needed for both character comfort, while the plot reveals at a reasonable pace. Sorrily disappointed to read Night Sky was cancelled, It was a mistake on Amazon's part. It's immanently watchable, you will likely want to binge this series. No doubt, you too will want another season or more. Presumably, it simply boils down to numbers, with so many choices for viewers, missing this series will be a mistake. Enjoy.

Im all for artistic license, but still expected more from Netflix. Hopefully most know better than to look to the entertainment world for actual history lessons, however, to have grounded one or two elements in reality could've leant to some success in this production. The choice of historic names is far too little. Let's first answer the question, what if any thematic artful interpretation were the creators intending to express? The first disappointment was the set design. Did anyone attempt to look at the supposed ceiling art? Wall dressings? Item after item, was sloppy and negligent. As mentioned elsewhere, theres no visual references to the period this is meant to lead the viewer into. From costumes, make up and hair, to location choices (architectural context), it's apparent this was intended to be interpretive art, yet failed. If production designers had simply read a couple of period pieces, fiction or non, chosen a motif to ground the viewers, perhaps this make believe story could've set the stage for writers, characters and production staff to depart from realism, directing this faux drama into a conceptual world the writers want viewers to follow. Albeit, it fails to lead. A prime example, yes, the wedding dance was time to leave and be gone. Cheap, tawdry, not even amusing or in anyway captivating. Netflix has the capacity to seek out talented artists, yet failed again here. I offered 2 stars for the dogged determination of the actors to portray developed characters. From all other aspects of writing, design, directing & production, even taken as fictional abstraction, this is a fail. Im presuming those with ratings of 9 & 10 are adolescent viewers or perhaps nescient to components of completed compositions in any chosen media form.

Drawn into this w/casting for Annika being Nicola Walker; this fresh new series offers much more for we viewers.

Apparently produced during COVID19 pandemic, this brave ensemble cast appears relaxingly comfortable together on screen.

Importantly, during a time of global isolations, the keen concept of character's Annika "breaking through the fourth wall" throughout the series has the effect of connecting viewers to the actor. IDK who chose this method and production extra interviews hasnt addressed it. Well done counterpoint to real life practices during the 2020-2021 years.

While Nicola Walker already had a successful following from prior detective roles,as well as followers of BBC4 Radio programme "Annika Strandhed", the audience now have a new Glascow centered visual representation for a somewhat familiar storyline with a brand new eyes.

Annika's seemlessly integrated ensemble cast as series Investigative team is offering crossover attraction for viewers. Differences in ages, specialities, background & training variety that each bring to solve homicides as members of recently formed Glascow Marine Homicide Unit. E.g.:The underwater diving specialist who's convinced he was sniped out of a promotion due to him,(Acctor Jaime Sives) is one of a handful of twenty-twenty contemporaries in characters for us to chose as most relatable, and who has additional (no spoilers) dramatic plot points which as of the first season hasnt yet been fully revealed beyond his ability to feel as comfortable as a Daddy in his home as your most worn levi's.

This series gorgeous cinematographry serves stunning backdrop for talented dramatic tensions, whether drawn on interpersonal relationships surrounding Annikas Loch Lomond home set, featuring her teenage daughter (Actor Silvie Furneaux), her possible love interest (Actor Paul McGann) or on the water scenes surrounding River Clyde.

Theres enough material to support future plot materials for writing additional seasons. Lets hope there's also enough viewers support and interest to encourage the production's future.

I suggest you give it a shout out in media that counts and after viewing, provide your own insights for favourite attributes this series presents.

While amateur armchair critics abound, I'd venture to guess viewers will find naught to dislike, rather like myself, see fresh and brilliant approaches to tried and true dramatic wins. Nicola Walker as Annika Strandhed making direct eye contact with you in your home via her whimsy and wit, will be talking to you about single parenting teenage girls whilst zipping off to lay her life in jeopardy during that weeks unforeseen work hazards (sic) just doesnt have comparable competition for your evenings mystery excitement. With hundreds of choices on the telly today, Annika is both fresh and connecting to a wide potential audience.

Landmark performances in some of these four short stories that our four legged, Weiner-dog attempts to dog leg us through, during her life.

First stellar young talent to keep an eye on is Keaton Nigel Cooke as the son Remi. Trivia here says Nigel learned Clare de Lune on flute in 1 week?

Keaton's performance develops beloved characters for audiences, complete with perfect transference from two legged to four legged Weiner-dog.

Weiner-dogs next journey features Bridget Brown (as April) and Connor Long (as Tommy), shattering ableist's POVs. Tommy Long founded Tapestry Theatre Company, an inclusive all-abilities troupe in Boulder County, Colorado. Connor Long as a Founder of troupe of Actors with differing abilities, whether physical or intellectual, delivers award worthy performances as perfect as these two. Connor & Bridget (as both April & Tommy) back in 2015, began to open inclusive opportunities for such talents in American Hollyweird, so very long overdue. Eventually in 2022 (7+ years later) CODA wouldve taken center stage in the Academy Awards, were it not for uptight ablest violence upstaging the event. We will gain true inclusivity! (Peacefully).

While a segue is missing leading into her third Weiner-dog journey, our four legged cutey's, two legged housemate's performance by Danny DeVito (as Prof. David Schmertz) delivers raw vulnerability that's worth the entire screening of the movie. Eventually the same emotions from DeVito which have been brewing off screen, via ingredients from entitled, whining smugette wannabe students will be served a four legged revenge with a side of satire, deliciously cold in a polka dotted tutu. Mustnt miss this master followed by yet the next master.

The last, fourth journey weiner-dog story and her next two legged cohabitant: Ellen Burstyn's (as Nana) is a Maggie cold jar codger with another invincible exterior. This two legged weiner-dog lover shows deeply susceptible fragility when alone.with only her four legged (as "Cancer" the weiner-dog). Facing off with Melo Ludwig's (as Young Nana's) missed choices along her lifes decades tends to lose the autumn of life continuity for both two &/or four legged companions. Has Nana been used again by a grand daughter showing up for a visit only when the money is needed? Or is attention for Cancer the que for weiner -dog to journey onward toward her fifth story?

Both Burstyn & DeVito are worthwhile contrapuntal gems to the objectionable 2016 Sundance protests which followed the scenes unnecessary, unfunny repetitions.

Missing plethoric elements needed to write, direct, film, edit, Gestalt, produce, etc etc.

Whether you like horse movies or medical challenge movies try to kick back and enjoy true to life warm moments this movie offers.

A young woman with a potentially lethal health issue meets a beautiful big talented horse who has equally challenging temperament issues,which for horses are also potentially lethal.

You'll see those criticize this for plot or cinema graphic imperfecrions. Have they not heard "Art imitates life?". In real life, the vast majority of people carrying a disability label, don't want to be told what they cannot do, especially at Jana's age(film's protagonist). Too many talented horses Have been completely given up on,or met tragic fates, because as social creatures they were deprived of developing emotional bonds that are so integral to a healthy horse. A good horse will give you their all & their everything when a bond is forged. For these reasons, and not pretending to be a professional film critic, I think the film perfectly hits all its marks. For critical reviews here, I ask- which language version did you watch?(several avail); how many horses have you lived with &/or ridden?; How many inner cowgirls have you known? True cowgirls &/or other disciplines of horsemanship have met rider's who's anatomical self won't cooperate with thier heart, brain & spirits desires? All that Ive known also muscle up and put immense effort into living as well as appearing as normal bodied as everyone else. This is one integral trait shared with a well matched horse.

Lastly for those claiming predictability, That indeed is how many times art imitates life. Rock my heart is enjoyable entertainment for all who give it a chance.

Regardless of how well presented, researched or documented it's sad to say healthy viewers aren't entertained by this subject matter, as they should never be! Surprised that following the "me too" movement, we don't see more support for this family and their story. In parts as it's presented possibly too soon to rate until all episodes are well digested. Female viewer who's not looking for anything other than truthful recount of full story. Women still have odds against them in 2021 when revealing ugliest behaviors of powerful men. Let's commit to changing the unbalance of power here.

I've had lifelong affair with British humour, yet there's all types of humour isn't there? I wasn't chuckling until the end of the episode about third mention of presumably a British idiom with an entirely different meaning across the pond? Or is it also the same hysterically funny double entendré In the UK too? I've never cared for colloquialisms though. Had the writers since the first episode taken to checking urban slang? in England? You'd think so! I knew of storm in a teacup and thank goodness didnt have any liquid in my mouth! if each episode has same level of gaffaws It might keep me listening. Unfortunately the premise couldnt be less interesting, I despise gossip, or anything near.

This is more than a slice of life documentary. Filmmakers took the time to balance the stunning cinematographic back drop of Big Sky country with some cowboy poetry, acoustic home spun cowboy classic folk music and lets the viewer experience the full enchilada of life as a rancher. Well filmed calving will let viewers unfamiliar with lifestyle glimpse into the day to day chores, lives of cattle and families caring for them au naturale. If viewer lives in city or suburb without understanding natural finished beef, this is great view into Montana cattle ranching a brief over view of the day to day handling of cows from the only way that wont require boots, gloves and getting tired from the chores. Understated, & smooth.

This slice of life romantic dramedy might seem a slow burner in today's formulaic filmmaking, but see it through. It has a well written storyline similar to european or british cinema. The protagonist is lovable, funny and a woman you'll want to get to know, So give her time to show you who she is through Blythe Danner's stellar inhabitation of character. The audience learns as much about changes we all can begin in any decade of life from the humourous counterpoint and cast of characters in her day to day life as we do from watching her reactions to a string of seemingly blue bummers as they tick away as steadily as father time in her world. I can share that LOL funny scenes accented by a dreamcast of friends including Rhea Perlman-DeVito to Sam Elliot. You're in for a happy ending btw, that will also leave a subtle smile on your face attributed to the feel good satisfactions, intended or not. Men will watch for comfortable romantic chemistry betwen Blythe Danner & Sam Elliot; women will watch for comfortable romantic chemistry betwen Blythe Danner & Sam Elliot (sic LOL)

I tried hard to fight back nausea, hoping to give it a chance. However the male characters are so unbearable, You're hoping the couple females will go movie theater with automatic weapons and give male characters torture due to them for grotesque behaviors. I generously skipped ahead to see if any improvements exist, but nope. Dont waste your time here.

Its too bad to see writers given completely free rein without even a technical advisor on the team. Netflix has become to much of a churn out the video factory, creating hours of fantasy for mindless madness. Its only a bit refreshing to see different scenery, actors and locations. The actors & directors have responsibility too In creating visual mayhem, too bad they didnt have a better work ethic. When all is said and done, it seems only the British are capable of producing engaging crime drama. If you need a break from the drama of this series, season two will certainly provide, as the season nears its wrap, the plot becomes laugh out loud ridiculous, you'll wonder if your not watching a satire or spoof on criminal drama.

Well worth checking out! Based on a cyber crimes law enforcement unit based in Brussels. I thoroughly enjoyed the storylines, writing, acting and production. Its refreshing to view quality who-dunnits that dont follow same old predictable formulae. Character development throughout the first season has been well inegrated without distracting from forward driven plot storylines. Each episode presents self contained crimes, often but not always including homicide, always requiring above average IT skills. The youngest member in the unit is female which made a big difference in realistic representation. Inclusion of a forensic pathologist with a disability is another realistic incousion, thanks to the wroters producers or casting agents who made that choice. I saw the dubbed version although subtitles were turned on also which dont exactly match dubbed dialogue. I persnally dont mind subtitles, when done well they assist in brushing up on other language skills. While that practice is popular across Europe I suppose single language Americans arent keen on this which is too bad. Netflix was started in America? I guess it makes sense theyre pandering to Americans.

If the viewer have any experience or relationship to SatDiving, Underwater surveys or services, you might be drawn to this for subject matter but will be sorrily disappointed. This story premiss is based on SatDivers descending for oil pipe repair near Somali-African waters with approaching severe "storm". As example of why this is a must miss film, supposedly the bell is returning to surface during height of storm which is demonstrated by intermittent black screen, flickering lights and actors jostling themselves. Good films must start with good writing, good direction, production and acting. I could list a plethora of problems but whats the point? I hope the future projects for all involved are better stories, better written and better executed. Ive been trying to imagine who might actually appreciate this effort. If anyone does watch this, I hope they know there isnt a shred of realism, artistry.Two stars for effort, it takes crew and cast turning up and working to finalize a project successful or not.

Ive never found the Adam Sandler humor funny, so maybe fans of the other actors will force you through this snooze fest, but honestly, unless you are stuck in a hospital yourself forced to waste hours of your life this is a must miss. The best bits are all exhibited in trailers, so watch a one minute trailer and skip the pre adolescent wanna be attempts at humor. Ive enjoyed some "slice of life" movies over the years, but they all had far better writing and acting than this. Lifes short, skip this.
