Good concept, competent direction and performances but a near miss
25 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
DVR'd this one on a whim and was pleasantly surprised that it was intelligent, competent and watchable. But ultimately, this raised my expectations to a point where I was somewhat disappointed.

The performances here are strong, if a bit dour. William Forsythe always throws himself into characters and does so here. I thought the character could have been given more to do, but Forsythe provides a compelling performance. Yul Vazquez was also solid in the lead role; I would have liked to have seen these characters written with a bit more fun and humor - a joke here or there - but it's better than the "twilight" and similar dreck coming out. I thought the direction was competent, other than the inability to find a richer, more charismatic tone. The story works on the surface, but the plot meanders and we really don't get very far practically speaking. For example, an interesting vampire character is introduced, disappears, then reappears at the end, to no point.

Good cable flick to watch, particularly for folks who are not "purests".

Explosive - The definitive Hillside Strangler movie
8 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Because the Hillside Strangler case is so interesting and compelling from beginning to end (the longest trial is the history of California & twice as long as OJ), film-makers have made several attempts at telling the story. Most have failed badly - this little made for TV version, however, is excellent, well-acted and hits all the right & important notes.

The casting and performances are first rate. The late Richard "Colonel Troutman" Crenna conveys the humanity of the lead cop on the case well (this was a difficult case over numerous months - several cop marriages failed over it). Dennis farina is coolly menacing as Buono. Billy Zane gives what may be his greatest performances in the most challenging role - that of Bianchi. He captures the tone perfectly as both charming, handsome and brutally violent. The movie goes to great lengths to humanize the victims and avoids being exploitive, though it is scary and dramatic.

One of the problems with other movies on this subject is they do not capture the complexity of the story, what makes the killers "tick", the sociological context and the human factor. They want to make this a serial killer / slasher concept, but it isn't. The story and characters are complex. The scariest thing may be that these guys came within an eyelash of getting away with it (the LA DA refused to prosecute; the County picked up the case & did). Also one of the first cases to use fibers to convict the killer. Interesting stuff. Check it out.

A couple nice performances but totally worthless story
8 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
As a Hillside Strangler buff I decided to buy this DVD ($5 at Blockbuster). I was blown away by the inaccuracies of the story, to the point of fraudulence. This is not really the Hillside case at all. The time-line is completely off (events happen waaay out of sequence to real life), and the Brittany Daniel (main) character is at best an amalgamation of a number of characters, and at worst a complete fabrication (not a good sign in a fact based movie when the lead character never existed!). And oddly, the story is told from her point of view, with an odd story-line about coke deals and sex parties. If I had a nickel for every movie with a lesbian criminal psychiatrist who looks like a model, does coke, throws sex parties at her home in the Hollywood Hills and does interrogations with her top open...

But worst of all, the movie fails to capture the essence of the story (one of the most bizarre and interesting cases ever, from beginning to end), what made the killers "tick" and worst of all disregards the victims by basically phasing them out of the narrative. On top of that, the film-making is amateurish (you'll need to down a bottle of Dramamine due to the camera that NEVER STOPS SWIRLING AROUND) and unsteady.

On the plus side, the performances by Clifton Collins, Jr. and Brittany Daniel are good. Though she isn't given much material to work with (many of her scenes involve her "thinking" aka staring off into space), she is sometimes engaging and always nice to look at. If you're really interested in Hillside, the best movie on it is The Case of the Hillside Stranglers, the 1989 made for TV flick with Richard Crenna, Dennis Farina & Billy Zane -Zane's performance in particular nails the Bianchi character much better than Rampage, and Crenna and Farina are excellent as well. The story also has more to do with the victims, and also with the toll the case took on the cops involved. Of course, that movie doesn't have long nude scenes w/ Brittany Daniel, so you'll have to choose.

Femalien (1996)

Hot babes, thin plot, very erotic - Venesa & Jacqueline are awesome!
19 April 2006
So many reviews, please read the synopsis or others for the "plot" details. Here's what's important - this flick is pretty much wall to wall skin, some decent pink (no spreads that I remember), and erotic fun.

There is a bit of filler to fast forward thru (silly subplot about saving a diner, blah blah). A sexy alien experiencing human lust is enough for plot - I guess these folks can't help themselves.

But Femalien has turned me into a real fan of Jacqueline Lovell, the pretty blonde who is actually a good performer who delivers her lines believably, and particularly Venesa Taylor. Venesa will blow you away here - pretty girl-next-door face, dreamy eyes, long legs and amazing double Ds that will have you short of breath. She's so hot, it may take you a couple viewings to make it thru the movie (get my drift). The scenes w/ other performers, including some mid-90s porn stars, are all adequate, but the scenes w/ Jacqueline and/or Venesa are stellar.

All & all very good for this type of movie, though I would have liked more pink.

Very bad, but doesn't try to be anything more. Nice sim sex
5 April 2006
A silly spoof of the short-lived prime-time game show, where the "prizes" tend to be hot babes stripping and lesbian sex. Zero production values - looks to be shot in a public access cable studio. No story - just lame jokes and hotties. That's not all bad, though, as I prefer less story and more sex from this company (Seduction). The babes are few but sexy - Bambi has several full-frontal scenes. And I actually find Julian Wells, a tall, slender blonde, sexy (in the "school-teacher" kind of way), very game and cute in her attempts at being the clever game-show host.

Get it if you find it less than 6 bucks - you can FF thru it in 20 minutes and be "satisfied".

Mistress Frankenstein (2000 Video)

Embarrassingly Bad But sexy fun - especially for fans of goth-babes
5 April 2006
**Recommendation - look these guys up on the net and check the girls before you get Seduction Cinema movies. If you don't like the girls, getting their movies is a waste of time and $.

This shallow plot plops a female into the Frankenstein role. Discussing the story here is a waste of all of our time. The attempts at humor are "cute", bordering on highly annoying. Production values OK (by their standards). Only thing worthwhile here is the women - the flick is full of hot chicks, many of which have girl girl scenes (the signature of this company). The hottest would be Darian Caine - I find her one of their most fun actresses, as she generally goes all out & doesn't half a** like some babes do in these bad movies. High-points are Darian & two babes (maids, I believe) in a bath-tub, and other goodies.

Get this one and "Re-Animator", and you'll have a really good Frankenstein film to watch before you have some other kinda fun.

Typical fair from Seduction with bad story but hot girls
5 April 2006
I've seen (far too) many flicks from this company - this one is about middle of the pack. One the good side, its a bit more stylized and under control than some of their fare - less of the sophomoric attempts at humor and more adherence to story (for what its worth). Many of their titles, like Sexy Sixth Sense, are buried by baaaad performances and an amateurish sensibility. On the other side, I found the simulated sex scenes not as hot as some of their other flicks (like Vampire Vixens, Gladiator Eroticus, Spiderbabe or Mistress Frankenstein).

Misty Mundae is always a 10 on the peter meter, as is Darian Caine. I found Barbara Joyce hot in a school-marm kinda way, and Ruby LaRocca a sexy little hottie.

Watch this with the remote firmly in your (free) hand, on a night when you need a break from porn. Don't waste your time wanting to check the story - you've got better things to do w/ your life. It is not a movie, it's pure T&A, but not bad by that standard.

Nicely erotic - mucho skin + Kari Wuhrer
5 April 2006
First of all, you don't pick up movies like this for high drama or auteur (check Fellini or Goodard if you want that)...you get them because they combine a nice combination of eroticism, skin and a plot that holds your attention. This one succeeds. It's a slight notch above your average skin-a-max flick, largely because of the luscious Kari Wuhrer, who's made a (surprisingly long) career out of being a sexy brunette that the screen loves.

Here, we see much skin and some nice action, as she plays a woman w/ psychic abilities, caught up in a murder mystery. Nice simulated sex scenes, Kari and Claire Stansfield are hot (great boobs), and Eric Roberts (one of the all-time great scenery chewers, and I mean that w/ love) make this worth a look. As a thriller, it's pedestrian, but holds attention.

If you're looking for something really raunchy, get a Surrender Cinema flick or something from Penthouse. If you want high art, get the Unbearable Lightness of Being (or something). If you're looking for a mildly entertaining movie that titillates, check this one out.

Erotic Chick Flick? - Swing & Miss despite attractive cast
31 March 2006
As I watched this (actually half watched, half fast forwarded), I couldn't help but think it had to be written by a woman. Five attractive females, in various stages of undress, sitting in a (Romanian) sauna discussing sexual fantasies. Sounds like a winner but never got off the ground.

Women discussing there experiences being ravaged by aliens could have been extremely hot, but its all too "chicky". Too much time spent talking about their "feelings", and so-called "erotic" scenes that play too soft - a lot of cutting away on the good parts, nothing explicit, no pink, not even much "boobage" (disappointing, as the actresses are well-endowed and not the standard plastic b-movie chicks), not enough skin, not enough heat (save one half-a** solo scene, they never get it on in the sauna!), too much talking and nothing went anywhere. Imagine scenes with them being examined, nude, on stainless steel tables, or forced to breed, or being fondled and probed. Alas, we got none of that, just some cheesy Harlequine romance-type female blathering.

The movie could/should have been half as long. Any coincidence most of these actresses, despite looking good, never made another movie? Check it out only if you get it dirt cheap.

Bored to Tears
24 March 2006
I've truly lost my patience w/ this genre of "film", as they tend to be neither "erotic" or "thrilling", that is, not sexy and boring to boot.

This one is story and talent-free, other than the physical talents of Sara aka Jacqueline Lovell, and some of the other hotties. I'd rather just buy a DVD with these babes romping around naked than to waste time on this filler. The upside is that, with the remote, you can get thru this in 15 minutes. Then again, why waste your time. Ironically, movies like this are actually "childish" and silly, not erotic.

For truly erotic thrillers, a few good ones are "Mercy" with Peta Wilson, "Body Double" w/ a young Melanie Griffith, "Mullholland Drive" w/ Naomi Watts or "The Dreamers" w/ Eva Green.

Another boring nude romp on the beach from Peach with weak extras
24 March 2006
This early Jacqueline Lovell flick is your standard soft-core snoozer, with all the flaws that make these kinds of DVDs suck: few close-ups, no spreads, poorly faked girl girl scenes and no pink.

Granted, the girls are pretty hot w/ a nice mix of natural and nicely augmented tops, but this is completely uninspired. DVD features about 6 or 7 scenes where the girls romp on the beach and in the water, very suggestive but doing nothing. The bulk of the scenes involve Selena w/ Sara aka Jacqueline Lovell (nice scene w/ the 2 on a boat using a shower-head, decent scene getting friendly on the beach). Some of these get kinda racy, but always leave you wanting (needing) more.

The DVD features standard Peach (Vivid's soft-core division) extras, which are merely clips from other videos they want you to buy. I recently bought several Peach DVDs in a package and find one to be more boring than the next - extremely tame. I can get the lame full frontal they show on HBO. Only check this out if you can get it dirt cheap.

Two of AV's hottest blonds in action!
14 March 2006
Compilations are popular because we know most of these flicks are mostly filler - a few good scenes & you have a winner. This meets that mark and more, containing one of the hottest girl/girl scenes ever shot - Janine giving Kelly Jaye a hot oil massage. Kellye Jaye was fairly new to the business at the time, and is fresh faced and may have only been with girls at that point. Janine was in her prime looks-wise (maybe the most beautiful AV star of all time), and generated heat with every role. The scene starts sizzling slow and builds to a frenzy -spectacular. Also, another great scene with Isis Nile, a guy & another girl. If you're a lover of sapphic action, rent or buy it just for the one scene.

Some hot action, but too much filler
14 March 2006
This DVD with wrestling "vixens" (not a fan of the "sport", but like the women) is divided into 3 parts: some very pedestrian live pro wrestling event footage, some cable-edit versions of boy/girl scenes (they go out of their way so you don't see anything), and sexy glamour vignettes with the girls, dancing and posing for the camera in hot outfits, topless & beyond. Fast-forwarded thru all the live wrestling stuff, and much of the cable-edit action (although Krysti's scene & the 1st scene-I believe Jessica Darlin-were good). Best thing here is there's some pretty good full frontal and reverse nudity with close-ups and spreads (especially Krysti who goes all out), but they ruin much of it with too many quick cuts and not holding on the "good stuff" long enough. As always, some girls are hotter and show more/ do more than others. The best girls are Krysti, Jessica & Missy, but be warned - lots of plastic surgery here, and some of it is a bit disturbing if you don't dig that look (particularly Missy-still found the body hot though). Worth viewing but pick it up at a bargain price if you can, and keep the remote handy for FF.

Fight Club (1999)
8/10
Brilliant, except for the end
10 February 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Fight Club is an angry, hilarious, sadistic, satirical, mean spirited and extremely ambitious film. In a sentence or 2, Norton's character struggles with self-worth, meaning and general self-loathing in a culture that has castrated what it is to be a "man". That is, until a chance meeting with Pitt's character changes his life, signaling the creation of the violent, male "becoming" exercise of Fight Club (a brutal, secret, hand-to-hand combat ritual). This leads to a larger movement of cultural anarchy and revolution. Its a wonder the film got made because it is dark, misogynist, violent and left-leaning (all good in my book). FC is one of those films that can be life changing and get under your skin (particularly for men), with its messages of male self-awareness and identity, rage at the state of the world and vitriolic bashing of the consumerism, materialism, conformity and vanity that some of us see and detest. It is also one of those movies that is ripe for misunderstanding, as some people do not "get it" (the fighting, for example, is more a metaphoric exercise, not a call for frat guys to go punch each other silly). Pitt is a revelation, Norton is just as magnetic, and Helena Bonham Carter steals several scenes playing against type. I think the first 3/4 of the movie is brilliant. It falls apart at the end for me on one thing (spoiler warning) - Pitt HAS TO BE A REAL PERSON, not a figment of Norton's imagination - even though they are clearly alter-egos in the metaphoric sense. Though the struggle is clearly Norton's own internal one, it has to be externalized, which it was for the 1st 3/4 (this has been handled much better in much lesser movies- "Bad Influence" with James Spader comes to mind). When I learned the Pitt character is "not real", it ruined it for me. Kind of like the "it was all a dream" ending you see in really bad movies. The attempt to go back at the end & stick Norton in all the scenes that Pitt was in is clunky & doesn't work. Just an opinion - still a fantastic film and an icon-making performance by Pitt.

Fish-out-of-water, high action adventure w/ an interesting take on Vikings
6 January 2006
This is one of my favorite films. I'm no lover of Bandaris, but his portrayal of an elite Arab aristocrat, put through a series of odd circumstances that force him to join Vikings to travel across the world and fight an ancient evil, is well shot, well-acted and intriguing. Other than star Bandaris, its an ensemble cast of mostly unknowns who do an excellent job of portraying Vikings as something other than berserking brutes. You truly identify with the "fish-out-of-water" Bandaris character and get engrossed in the story (based on Criten's Eaters of the Dead, which gives away the major plot twist and was logically changed). Several things conspired to make this film less than successful (an Arabic lead character and cast of unknowns probably didn't help). Old school style, swash-buckling story which is a great lost treasure.

Deliberate but intriguing movie stolen by luscious Ludivine
19 March 2004
Heard much about this film - rented the DVD & was not disappointed. The story moves slowly at the beginning, but picks up steam as Charlotte Rampling (in a fine performance) writes / vacations in France, where she becomes entangled in the life of Julie (Ludivine Sagnier). Definitely has a slow-paced, European vibe but the story picks up steam & becomes quite engaging, with excellent twists toward the end. But the real story is Sagnier, who is breathtaking on-screen (as she frolicks about, having affairs w/ older men, walking around topless & in bikinis, being sexy-tough but vulnerable) and is the embodiment of youthful sex appeal. You can't take your eyes off of her (or her golden brown skin) whenever she's on-screen (yes, that great movie poster is of her). The combination of her magnificence & a good, well-acted story makes this one worth seeing.

No Plot but Top-notch T&A
19 March 2004
The plot here is nothing more than a coat hook to hang a bevy of hot chicks in various stages of undress. This is a steamy soft-core feature, along the lines of late-night Skin-a-max, if not somewhat more "revealing". Story has something to do with a female bloodsucker, she needs lesbian-vampire sex slaves for some reason (why ask why) and uses a Renfield-type guy to get them (I found the attempts at humor game but excruciatingly bad). Renfield is determined to peep through every window in town until he finds the right babes for the job. Tina Krause is very sexy, but Paige Turner & Debbie Rochon are just as "memorable". And as any "fan" of this company's videos knows, there are always loads of nice girl/girl action. So pick this up, keep your other hand free for the fast forward button & enjoy.
