Split (IX) (2016)
9/10
M. Night Shyamalan is back on form
15 June 2017
I'll just start by saying I loved this film.

For me M. Night Shyamalan has been disappointing for a long time, I loved Sixth Sense, I loved Unbreakable(very underrated film I think), then the rest of his films were all just big disappointments up until The Visit which I personally found very engaging and now we have Split which is definitely his best film since Unbreakable.

Split is the story of three girls being kidnapped and held by a man(portrayed brilliantly by James McAvoy) with split personalities.

I don't want to go into the story but it is very good and tense the directing is good too but for me the stand out in this film is James McAvoy. His acting in this film is incredible. He plays a man with 23 distinct personalities including women and a child. I think we see him portray nine on screen and he plays them all so differently with different mannerisms, facial expressions and speech patterns. I was very impressed with him.

I don't think I have any complaints with the film, overall I thought it was excellent and the ending made me very excited too. 9/10

Creepy and Funny
15 June 2017
This film tells the story of a brother and sister going to visit and stay the week with their grandparents who they have never met before, the film is shot as if filmed through the kids camcorders as they make a film of their visit.

For me this film was much better than i thought it'd be. I wasn't expecting much as it was a 'found footage film'and directed by M. Night who hadn't made a good film since unbreakable( until now with The Visit and Split both being excellent)but it was great I found it both creepy and funny in equal measure.

The acting and direction were both good the only thing I could of done less with is the boys rapping.

Overall great horror film which is genuinely creepy as well has having funny moments. 8/10

Quite enjoyable.....but dumb
15 June 2017
So this film bills itself as the direct sequel to the original 1974 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, even starting the film using archive footage from that film then continuing it on with a siege at the Sawyer house.

The stand off at the house at the start really reminded me of the start of The Devils Rejects but not as well executed. The film then jumps about 20 years to a girl finding out she has inherited a house by a grandmother she didn't know she had so goes on a road trip to Texas with her friends to see it.

I went into this film with really low expectation not expecting much at all but I quite enjoyed watching it but it is a very dumb film. So don't go into this film expecting a horror classic like the original. A couple of the dumb moments being the friends leaving a hitchhiker they just met in the house while they go shopping or how the main girl is in a crop top type thing for most of the film so her stomach is always on show and even when given a shirt to put on she only does up the top couple of buttons so her stomach is still on show constantly, even gets her shirt ripped fully open to then only do the top couple of buttons up again, it's very weirdly off putting.

The acting is all OK nobody too awful, the story is alright, the first act is very normal predictable stuff, the middle I found quite interesting and then the final act was OK for me personally but it will definitely rub a lot of people up the wrong way I think.

Final thoughts being quite enjoyable to watch but nothing special or memorable just don't take it too seriously. 6/10

Surprisingly Great
11 April 2015
My fiancé and I are both big Disney fans but neither of us were too excited by this film when it was first announced or even when we saw the trailer, but thanks to friends and family raving about it we watched it and both thought it was great.

As always with Disney the animation is fantastic, colourful and imaginative, the characters likable and funny and the robot Baymax is just amazing in how a robot without facial features can be so lovable, the script is funny but the story is nothing you've not seen before but it's handled well.

The film was much better than I thought it'd be, I really enjoyed it. 8/10

Better than the first
10 April 2015
I wasn't a fan of Captain America: The First Avenger I rated it a 5 as to me it was just an average popcorn movie, nothing stood out about it but there was nothing terribly wrong with it either. It just felt like a prelude to Avengers and not a fully fledged film in itself.

Thankfully though this sequel feels like a proper Captain America film. I liked the story of the winter soldier, there was some great action sequences and I liked Nick Cage and Black Widow getting more screen time.

This is how the first film should of been. It was enjoyable and one the better MCU films up there with the first Iron Man and Avengers (not seen Guardians yet). If like me you found the first Captain America lacklustre don't let it put you off watching this one. 7/10

Daredevil (2015–2018)

As a Daredevil fan it's exactly what I hoped for.
10 April 2015
Two episodes in so far, as a Daredevil fan it's exactly what I hoped for. I am a huge fan of the Daredevil comics, my favourite run being by Bendis and Maleev, and this show is how you would imagine a Daredevil TV show being. It's a dark, gritty sombre affair with some great action, there is a fight scene in episode two which is truly amazing.

Talking about action the best part for me is the action feels very realistic and brutal unlike the Daredevil film with its over the top wire work. Also very good in this show is the way his powers aren't shown in any fancy way, no sonar view or anything like that, it just emphasise his listening. The actors are all great too and the plots are compelling, just now I have nothing bad to say about this show.

When marvel got back the rights to Daredevil I was a little apprehensive of how they would portray his character, no worries there now I've seen it, or if they would use the character at all. I was worried if he did get his own show/film it'd be like the rest of the Marvel films/shows, light hearted action with great fan service and a good helping of comedic moments, which wouldn't of suited the dark world of Daredevil. But I can safely say to all you fellow hornhead fans that they have nailed everything about Daredevil perfectly.

I would highly recommend this show to Daredevil fans and fans of darker heroes like Batman, fans of the current MCU films/shows might not like the tonal change from those films/shows but it's exactly what the character needed. Now excuse me while I go watch some more! 10/10

Great Scary Movie
19 March 2015
I've seen this film a couple of times now and I love it. It's a great creepy, scary film with a great plot, fantastic acting by the young girls the way they talk and react to everything just seems believable and a very creepy entity in mama herself.

I found the story fascinating and is open to interpretationand good for repeat viewings. This has to be one of my favourite modern horror movies.

Though I think they showed mama too early and it could of been interesting if they kept you guessing as to what mama was, a ghost, hallucination or fractured personality but they show mama to be a ghost right from the start.

That is my one complaint but like I said a great movie and one of my fave horror movies there is.

A great horror drama
18 March 2015
This is a beautifully shot haunting film about a boy in a haunted orphanage during the Spainish civil war.

This film has a great creepy atmosphere but it is more a drama with horror elements than a straight up horror film which I think can lead to some people being initially disappointed but if you know what you're going into I'm sure you'd appreciate how great this film is.

The acting is great, same with the visuals especially the look of Santi and there quite a few memorable scenes that will stick with you.

This film is highly recommended.

Pacific Rim (2013)

Fun Movie
18 March 2015
This kind of movie usually wouldn't catch my interest but I'm a huge Del Toro fan so I knew I'd have to check it out.

And I'm glad I did as it was surprisingly good. Of course it's not a deep film but if you go into it to get swept along in the ride you'll have a lot of fun with it. The story premise is interesting, the action great, the art design of the Jaegers (the giant robots) and the Kaijus (the giant monsters) were fantastic and I might actually look into getting a Pacific Rim art book, the acting was good all round but Idris Ebla steals the show and there was enough human moments to keep you invested in the film without slowing it down.

So overall good fast paced fun just don't go over thinking it. I would recommend it if this isn't your normal type of film but are a Del Toro fan or if you're the type of person whose inner child would get a kick out of seeing giant robots fight giant monsters! 7/10

Director's Cut Review
17 March 2015
I first saw this film when I was around 12. I enjoyed it but didn't really remember any of it apart from how creepy the Judas Breed was. Now 27 and being a huge Del Toro fan I decided to rewatch this and when I heard how Del Toro had disowned this movie because of studio meddling but had now released a director's cut that he was happy with, I had to check it out.

I still enjoyed it and thought the first half of the film was fantastic, dark, creepy atmosphere with a great premise but to me once the whole cast descend into the tunnels the films goes a bit downhill. It becomes too typical Hollywood monster action movie and we see way too much of the Judas Breed which loses its creep factor it had in the first half. The ending as well is too Hollywood for a Del Toro film.

The director's cut adds in a few more scenes which explains things a little more but don't improve the movie much at all, so if you hated the theatrical cut you wont like this version much more.

Overall it's an enjoyable film and if you're a Del Toro fan or monster movie fan check it out just know its not one of his best but had lots of potential. If he had made it nowadays it could have been great.

Completely Underrated
17 March 2015
I just watched this film for the first time today and thought it was great. The story premise was interesting and original, the acting great, the relationship between the grandfather and granddaughter was touching and the atmosphere was suitably suspenseful and creepy. I was on the edge of my seat.

Before watching this film I checked out its IMDb boards to see a lot of negatives that after watching the film myself I can't understand at all. Maybe people expectations were too high after watching Pan's Labyrinth? Maybe they were expecting a totally different film? I don't know.

It is a slow film but I found it to be perfectly paced. The acting seemed to get a lot of negative comments here but I thought it was great, understated and natural. But I would recommend this film to fans of Del Toro and horror or people looking for a fresh take on vampires. Just don't go in expecting action and gore like other vampire flicks. Great underrated Film. Check it out and don't let others negative opinions put you off. 8/10

Kick-Ass (2010)

Good but I'd rather have a Big Daddy and Hit girl Movie!
6 July 2012
The first time I saw this film I was a bit disappointed I mean I loved the Big Daddy and Hit girl parts of the story I just didn't like the Kickass story all that much. His fight scenes were good but I just didn't care for the character or his group of friends the way I did for Big Daddy and Hit girl.

The second time watching it he did grow on me more but that could be because in the time between veiwings I read both Kickass graphic novels, so now this film is quite near the top of my fave comic book films (The Dark Knight, Sin City, Watchmen, X-men First class, Scott Pilgrimm Versus The World, The Crow).

This film did something something I thought o film could....it made Nicolas Cage cool again! 7/10
