Reboot (2022)

If "Reboot" had to be cancelled, then I don't know anymore
26 February 2023
Great plot, clever writing, hilarious situations and jokes, very insightful. The cast is amazing, and I mean ALL the cast, both leading and supporting, though Keagan-Michael Key and Paul Reiser as the dysfunctional but eager-to-catch-up father of the protagonist are my absolute favorites. And the writers' team, both younger and older (of course).

The eight episodes left me wanting for much more, and then I learn it's been cancelled. Please, please bring it back, "Reboot" is one of the best shows out there - it has drama, it has comedy, it has life in it, and the characters are just longing to be developed further.

Not just watchable, but hilarious, with great cast and decent script
27 July 2022
This is one of the funniest comedy movies I have watched for a long time now. Robert De Niro is genuinely funny, and Tommy Lee Jones works magic conveying hilariousness, sadness, old-school manliness, and nostalgia, all at the same time. Morgan Freeman is almost sinister, but in a peculiarly ridiculous way, which is such a great match for the tone of this film. There are a lot of very funny details (the horse, the "color-craving" cast member, etc.), which will keep you entertained throughout the movie.

Of course, the script could have been better, and the ending was a little rushed, and perhaps some of us (me including) would want to see a closure for the love line, but overall I enjoyed "The Comeback Trail" a lot. As, I'm sure, will anyone who loves a good light comedy.

The Bubble (2022)

Easily one of the best comedies I've ever seen!
17 April 2022
Literally, for the life of me I couldn't figure out how can this movie have such a low rating. This is one of the best, funniest, most hilarious, and satirical comedy film I have ever seen. The cast is amazing, each of them bringing in a very peculiar comedic vibe, even the supporting actors are great. The only thing I could compare this with would be "Staged", and not only because of the lockdown topic, but the presence of the healthy absurd humor, which is very refreshing and funny. I am definitely going to watch Judd Apatow's other movies, but thanks so much for this comic relief!

Poor man's "The Thomas Crown Affair"
5 October 2021
I wonder how none of the commentators mentioned that the movie obviously seems to be inspired by "The Thomas Crown Affair". Much less smooth, classy, captivating, but, on the other hand, with extra action scenes.

I think, overall, Alessio Della Valle did a good job trying to make a stylish, art-filled film within the constraints of the apparently limited budget. The story is okay, the non-linear storytelling is rather interesting, camera work is surprisingly good, the acting is okay - except for (and I am so sorry to say that because generally he delivers great performances) Jonathan Rhys Meyers who is just not convincing to me as the refined John Kaplan who is supposed to "make art sexy".

For some reason the movie felt unnatural leaving somewhat "plastic" taste in your mouth. None of the characters are likable, I couldn't sympathize with any of them. Michael Rubino (Hirsch) could have been a great multi-dimensional character, but wasn't developed enough. Vincent (Piven) is ridiculous in a non-funny way and pathetic. Sarah (Vega) is cold and unconvincing. The ending also seemed to be rather artificial.

So I say, it's fine to watch once if you like art-related and action-packed movies. But to re-watch "The Thomas Crown Affair" instead wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Last Call (I) (2021)
4/10
Below any expectations
20 March 2021
An insipid, uninteresting, disappointing movie lacking in almost every department. The writing is absolutely useless, there is no development whatsoever for any of the characters. Love line (or what it really meant to be) is highly implausible, Piven and Manning have below zero chemistry together. Honestly, it's so bad, it's ridiculous. The weird condition, which was for some unimaginable reason assigned to the protagonist, kept to be reiterated in several scenes for no reason at all. Lots of drunk people talking rubbish, and that's it. No wonder the actors looked like they were bored to even be on set.

I give it four stars just because I like stories of saved neighborhoods, and "Last Call" could have been so much better had the makers put a little more effort in it. I say, re-watch "Two-Weeks Notice" instead, don't waste your time and money on this one.

Just a good movie, old and nice way
27 January 2021
Action lovers, skip this one. This movie is really slow, but the 90 minutes flew by as we watched the amazing performance by Ethan Hawke. Of course, he is the best thing about the film. The plot is simple: a man who spent 21 years in prison tries to catch up with his life and the changed environment. It's a difficult task, but he gets the much needed help from...and I won't spoil it further. An enjoyable relaxing and touching movie, definitely worth watching.

Not brilliant, but hey, another one with Kurt Russell as Santa!
24 December 2020
I can see why people didn't like it. The first movie was very good, with much better dialogue, better touching moments, better... well, almost everything. CC2 is full of CGI, abysmal acting by Goldie Hawn (sorry!) and the guy playing the main villain, and an overall mediocre story.

But. It's still a fun Christmas movie with the best Santa ever who also happens to be the best entertainer! Loved him in every scene and especially his airport performance. The CGI is actually quite good, and the little elves certainly make the whole thing watchable and funny.

I say give it a try, but don't expect much. More than sure you'll enjoy it.

Thank you, Mike Flanagan!
18 December 2020
I am writing this review after watching this show for two times in a row in six days. "The Haunting of Bly Manor" is a masterpiece, that's all I have to say. An outstanding cinematographic work, which brings together a great script, amazing setting and dialogues, excellent actors, remarkable music, beautiful cinematography, and everything else that goes into an intelligent first-class movie.

Every episode has a great storytelling, every episode unravels something wonderful and touching, there are lots of amazing details for an attentive viewer to notice (which I am not going to mention to avoid spoilers). The love stories are all very moving and even heartbreaking. All cast is excellent, but Oliver Jackson-Cohen is just unbelievable as Peter. Makes you love the character no matter what. I could go on and on.

Please do not watch this is you expect a horror movie. I didn't even think that "The Haunting of Hill House" was a horror, let alone this one so mistakenly marketed as the second season. This is drama at its core, despite its name and the ghosts, and the supernatural activity that this show contains. I think "The Haunting of Bly Manor" should be watched from a totally different perspective. Please take time and effort to appreciate the show the way it is, and it may become one of the most satisfying movie experiences in your life. Just like it did for me.

Great potential, but went flat somewhere
15 December 2020
I almost feel sorry for this movie. I think it had such a great potential and could even be better as a mini-series. The plot is good, but I didn't like the storytelling, how they chose to unfold the story. The setting is good, the characters are interesting, and the first part of the movie was logical and near perfect. But starting somewhere in the middle the movie started to fall apart. All of a sudden, without any warning, they tell you who is the hacker. So the final twist becomes not so much a twist because there were clues dropped earlier, and now it has become obvious. I think the writers could have worked a little harder to tell the story in a more captivating way. For example, there could be more flashbacks to the characters' lives, or events in the past that led to the situation.

Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed the movie. Lambert Wilson is wonderful, as always, and a joy to watch and listen to in both French and English. Other actors are fine with me, too - except, perhaps, Sara Giraudeau who is frankly very unconvincing in her small role as the PA to a boss from hell. The soundtrack is also great, very suspenseful and spot on.

Like a Boss (2020)

Great comedy I enjoyed a lot!
23 September 2020
Frankly, I'm not sure what kind of expectations people who gave this movie 1-4 stars had. I though it's a great feel good movie, with likable characters, a few funny jokes, and wonderful actors (although I felt that sometimes Salma Hayek was a bit over the top). It's not meant to be your guide to winning business strategy or some kind of a philosophical story to ponder over. It's pure, very entertaining comedy. Don't judge it from other, demanding standpoints used for serious cinematographic works, and, I'm sure, you can enjoy it as much as I did.

Genuine, enjoyable and cozy movie
19 September 2020
This movie got better as it progressed. Sound plot, great acting, likable characters. Jessica Hynes, the protagonist, is very good, David Tennant is great and charming. The movie has a warm, cozy air about it, with light humor. Totally recommended.

Fun watch, with some great laughs
10 August 2020
I couldn't see why people hated this so much. The show is funny, a great light watch with good acting from lead cast. Jennifer Garner and Juliet Lewis are the heart of the series, so is David Tennant who never disappoints. The show is not supposed to provide some life changing philosophical experience, so just relax and watch it, and I'm sure you will find it enjoyable.

Had great potential, but the unsatisfying ending ruined it all!
9 August 2020
The show started out as a very interesting drama and mystery story with likable characters that had great development potential. So I was very looking forward to seeing the second and the third episodes. It seemed like something overwhelming was going to be discovered at some point. Alas, this never happened. And the last episode was a total disappointment.

I think "Deadwater Fell" is just another one of those shows that we are gradually getting used to: the watching is a captivating process, episode after episode, and then they bring it to some hasty flat ending. Unfortunately, the writing these days leaves much to be desired.

On a positive note, the acting is very good, I also enjoyed great views of amazing landscapes of Scotland.

Not too bad. Not good either.
7 August 2020
I think the main problem of this film is that there is no single character for you to care about. David Tennant is an amazing actor, but I think he is terribly miscast in this; Janet Montgomery is, well, just listless almost all the time. Their crazy love for each other has zero credibility, even though the script had enough time to provide at least some character or relationship development. I found most supporting characters boring to the point of annoying, as well. The spy part of the plot is weak, with some attempted twists across the movie, which don't even feel like twists because you didn't care in the first place. There is no effort whatsoever made by either the writers or most of the actors for us to like the characters. And all of that happens at an excruciatingly slow pace. I am not sure anyone here mentioned the score. While not bad in itself, I believe it's not suitable for the film at all, so I felt kind of distracted and in a wrong mood for what was happening onscreen most of the time. I would only recommend this title to the most dedicated Tennant fans and... no, that's it.

Staged (2020–2023)

Great things do not need long reviews
2 August 2020
This will be the shortest review I have ever written. "Staged" was the funniest, craziest, cleverest, fantastic piece of comedy I have seen lately. David Tennant is brilliant, Michael Sheen amazing, and together with Simon Evans the trio will make you laugh practically non-stop. I have re-watched it already despite having seen just a few days ago for the first time :)

Little Joe (2019)

Wasn't going to review this, but I feel I have my two cents to contribute
14 July 2020
I am very surprised to see all the negative reviews here. I actually think it's quite a clever little movie. People complaining that it's hardly scary or creepy just miss the point: this is not supposed to be a classic horror movie with lots of gore and scream queens. I see it as more of a reflection on how the genetic engineering can affect our lives and feelings on various levels: physically, psychologically, even mentally. Will we be able to recognize the enemy when it's at our door or will we be too busy sorting ourselves out? The script does a great job providing arguments for one side and then, as soon as we think we're sure of what's really going on, for the other.

All the performances are great including the brilliant Ben Whishaw and the young actor playing Joe. I also quite liked the score (the thing that seemed to have disappointed most of the reviewers), I think it fits the visuals and the tone of the movie perfectly. Loved the ending, as well. Overall, with possible flaws, I think it's a kind of film that makes you think. Not bad at all.

Implausible, not funny, hugely overacted
9 September 2019
With such great cast in it, I was so anticipating this movie. Well, it turned out a great disappointment. Aside from Jack Nicholson playing Jack Nicholson for the umpteenth time and Diane Keaton playing a teenager with hormonal rush rather than a mature and (supposedly) intelligent playwright, the plot is implausible to the point of being ludicrous and there is absolutely no chemistry between protagonists. I am 45, so I am the right audience for this movie, but for the life of me I can't figure how people found it enjoyable. The only high point of this movie is Frances McDormand with sadly very small role. Avoid. Watch... anything instead.

This is what you get when mixing genres ineptly
9 September 2019
I agree with the previous reviewers: until the twist occurs the movie does well. McConaughey is always great to watch and is very convincing. The "Old man and the sea" premise is also passable, as is Anne Hathaway. But after the twist the movie becomes a mess. The result is mediocre at best. Not a good drama, not a good thriller, and so-so mystery/fantasy. I only recommend it to the fans of Matthew McConaughey, otherwise, save your time.

They lost the fun along the way
28 August 2019
To be honest, the movie is not bad. It has handsome Chris Hemsworth, rather convincing Liam Neeson and great CGI. It's just, compared to the previous movies in this franchise, this one takes itself too serious. The jokes are just not funny. The writing is mediocre at best, the plot is downright weak. All the fun seems to have been transferred to alien characters, which simply does not work. Tessa Thompson is miscast, and chemistry between protagonists is non-existent. And not only that, the film lacks the warmth and the, how to put it, subtle nonchalant charm of the previous parts. Using the same font in the opening and closing credits is just not enough, sorry.

C'est la vie! (I) (2017)

Something subtle missing
3 February 2019
I understand where this movie was going; the problem is it never got there. I love French cinema, and "C'est la vie" is a good specimen of a French comedy turned food for thought about life and all the ordinary and extraordinary things it has to offer. The film has some French humor (albeit the "some" is on the "little" side), convincing cast, but the lack of plot and development makes it wander toward unsubstantial details, which ultimately makes it boring. The details are poorly organized around the main message of the movie, and the message itself is a little vague. Overall, I recommend it to French cinema fans, but others will probably find it slow and boring.

What a waste, could have been so much better!
3 January 2019
This movie has superb camera work, art direction, costumes, battle scenes, yet almost no plot and nearly non-existent dialogue. I wish the writers would just bother to turn the movie into something more exciting. With the underlying story, it wouldn't have been too hard.

That could be okay if there were good performances. However, two hours of watching Chris Pine's terrible acting is literally unbearable. To say he is wooden would be a huge understatement. The look on the guy's face does not change once throughout the movie! It's exactly the same face for talking with his subordinates, his wife, his daughter, for winning and losing battles, for falling in love and parting with his loved ones. Just who decided to cast him as Robert Bruce is beyond me. Stephen Dillane is amazing though as Edward I; Aaron Taylor-Johnson does a great job, too, but somehow seems to be overacting as compared to the underacting protagonist.

Honestly, the best--and splendidly played--role in this film belongs to the beautiful nature of Scotland. That and the great period costumes made the watching almost enjoyable. Such a waste of a good story and great filming effort.

War & Peace (2016)

Worth watching, if only for Paul Dano as Pierre Bezukhov
29 January 2016
Contrary to many opinions here, I found it rather watchable and even enjoyable at times. It felt like a polished, brushed, and westernized version of the original novel, and to my view there was little "Russian" spirit in the series. But I understand that overall it fits well within the BBC format of period movies such as those based on Jane Austin works. Perhaps this was the creators' way to make it more watchable for the modern audience.

Of course, the best thing about this version of W&P is Paul Dano - to me, he's been born for this part. Kind, intelligent, noble, sensitive, soft, fragile, often a restless soul - Dano is all these things. Couldn't even dream of such count Bezukhov. Another strong suit of the movie, as many noted, are the locations and set decorations. Amazing. The costumes, on the other hand, looked at best questionable to me, especially when it came to Natasha's, Sonia's, and princess Bolkonskaya's dresses and styles. I was simply shocked by how the former two were dressed for their first appearance in the movie: seriously, they are young countesses, does the costume designer really believe that Russian nobility had no taste whatsoever in fashion? Unfortunately, apart from Paul Dano, I found most of other casting choices rather disastrous (especially Lily James as Natasha). They all are fine actors, but not suited for their parts, with rare exceptions. I felt that a more thorough casting job should have been done.

Overall, I think that it is still possible to enjoy this new production, especially if you haven't read the book.
