Franklin (2024– )

Can't get past the trailer
24 April 2024
Can't get past the trailer. I know a little about Benjamin Franklin. Read about him. Seen several PBS documentaries where they go in depth on him. Saw the late great Tom Wilkinson portray him in John Adams, and it felt right. But I was extraordinarily cringed out just by seeing Michael Douglas in quite possibly the worst casted role in the history of television or film. When he looks into the French diplomats eye with a Michael Douglas twinkle and states he loves a dangerous game, I could not allow myself to get any further exposure of such lunacy without getting a stroke out of frustration. I only rated it 4 because I did not see it and felt other aspects may be respectable, but it is Michael Douglas in costume, not an actor playing Franklin.

Fever dream of stupidity
19 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Opening of episode one seems promising. Then, the Farrell tries to be stealth in his investigation. Surprise! He is driving a pristine early 60's Corvette convertible that sticks out like any proverbial sore appendage you want. He needs a 3000 Camry. Jump to episode three. WTF was that? Maybe because it was a week between episode 2 and 3, but it was a mass of confusion introducing so many characters where you have no clue what is going on. It appears all characters have some kind of hidden connection, as well as all seem to be playing both sides, while the hero is the only righteous character. My wife and I both had zero idea where this is going, nor care anymore. On a side note, I love Amy Ryan as an actress. She is horrid in this. Terrible acting, and a ridiculous character.

Worst episode ever
19 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Housekeeper traumatized by walking into her rich bosses bedroom and witnessing oral sex? An acquaintance demanding Larry take care of his crazy daughter if he dies? Talking in your sleep to get out of responsibilities? All three plot points were simply stupid, and far fetched. Oh, and not funny either. I think it is time to hand the show over to JB Smoove, as he is the only one that generated a chuckle in this disaster of an episode. Can anyone explain how the artwork altered by the housekeeper was not discovered by Larry or the artist before they went to the gallery. At this point I am only typng to get to the minimum amount of characters required to [ost.

House of the Dragon (2022– )
Feels like some kind of forgery
29 August 2022
I have seen the first 2 episodes. Ep1 seemed like it attempted to grab the attention of GOT fans with some similar, yet less satisfying, scenes. Reminds me of the old records at KMart in the 70's by K-Tel. They had all the years number one hits, but done by an unknown cover band. It also reminds me of Vinyl in another way. The fairly recent HBO flop that looked good on paper but was pure garbage. Ep 2 of HOTD was excruciatingly BAD. Not just boring, but horrific. I could not care any less about any character. It seems they are grooming the 15 year old princess to be the face of the show, but Yikes! Talk about charmless! I predict the same fate as the show Vinyl. Initially planning on a multiple season run, but midway through the first season, they will realize no one cares, and just fade off after the end of season 1.

So far, so bad....
31 July 2022
40 minutes into this movie and I had a wild guess that the lead of the movie must be the writer and director. I have never seen her before, and it seemed to be a semi-amature vanity production. Sure enough, she wrote, directed and stars in this ridiculous movie. As of the 40 minute mark, it is not even remotely funny, and Dorothy's behavior is simply anxiety inducing. Done.

Makes as much sense as a typical dream
17 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why would a production company make complete replicas of an apartment and a bar, hire so many people to rehearse pointless conversations, and spend all the time and money so a guy can tell a friend he told a trivial lie years ago? It is repulsive how they secretly film strangers and then get people to imitate them on film. Have not even finished the first episode, and I feel like the whole thing is a prank on the viewer. Simply ridiculous premise.

Disclosure. Have only watched one episode.......
16 July 2022
But this already is fantastic. I can really believe Jessica and Susan are Joan and Bette. I think Ryan Murphy's show are very hit and miss. Mostly miss in my opinion. If the rest of the series is as good as the first episode, and I have zero indication it will not be, this is Murphy's masterpiece. I truly believe some of his productions are the worst shows of the last 15 years, but this may be amongst the greatest mini series in that same time frame. Gave 9 only because of only seeing one episode. Next one starts now.

Kind of ironic.....
13 May 2022
Clearly this doctor is a scumbag, and criminal charges and significant punishment is warranted. But do any of these siblings even realize that they ONLY exist because of him? If other sperm donations were used, they would not exist. Plus Sibling #1 vehemently wanted a half sibling and started this whole venture in seeking some out. She got 100. And many seem to be her friends for life. Not excusable behavior by the Doctor, but as they say,...make Lemonade.

This movie changed my impression of 21st century rock music.
7 April 2022
Saw it for the first time in 2010 when I was 49. Grew up with the classics, Neil, Floyd, Zep, Bowie, Heads, etc. Bought it used on the cheap out of curiosity. I was STUNNED!!. I thought by their name they would be some Emo band with whiney vocals. Nope. They are all the best of classic 60's through 80's rock blended into something original that rivals, if not exceeds, all my childhood heroes. After 2 watches they leapfrogged almost every artist in my extensive record/CD/Mp3 collection that I started in 1973. I would not say they have eclipsed The Who in my mind, but they are next in line. As the other reviews state, this is a near perfect video concert, that is so accessible on first listen. They are clearly top notch musicians, but not show offs. I have seen them live many times, and they sound just like they do in this video, so the immaculate sound is not something fixed post production. They sound pristine and you can always delineate the sounds coming from each of the 5 band members in an ultra clear manner. Do yourself a favor. Buy this DVD without hesitation, but only if you like great Rock Music.

Childhood classic
9 February 2022
I saw this on a crappy B&W TV in 1969 or so at around the age of 8. It always stuck in my head as my favorite war movie as a child. I lived in the middle of the city, San Diego, but there were miles of wooded canyons directly behind my house, and in the 60's we all played soldier. It was always WWII, even though it was the middle of the Vietnam war. In watching this for the first time in over 50 years, I know why I liked it as a kid. It has the exact feel of me and my friends running around the bushes in the canyons playing war. I have always remembered the Mickey Rooney grenade/potato scene. Has not come up yet as I type this, but has always been imprinted in my brain. I am surprised how this is all filmed on location, and not in a studio where it could have looked like Gilligan's Island. Seeing it on widescreen and in color gives away some of the shear stupidity of this movie, like the red hat. But hey, for a kid watching on an old TV 50 plus years ago, it is one of the great WWII movies ever made.

Incredibly stupid episode of a 6 out of 10 star espies.
6 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Most of the logic failures have been pointed out. But how about this one? How does 6 or 7 people devise such a complex plan when one of them does not even speak English? How does Sun know what is actually expected of her without constant visual prompts? It is not like she could understand what the plan was prior to arriving without an interpreter.

One question
2 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Since there is an FBI agent and a Scotland yard detective participating in this documentary, it appears there is still some interest in finding this guy. How then, can the alleged victim go to court via zoom against her children without law enforcement at the very least checking them out? You can not blame covid. As others have inferred, there are so many gaps of credibility in this story, that maybe the greatest con was what the producers of this film pulled off. Like one long boring Punked.

Higher rating if it wasn't SO depressing
30 January 2022
I had a hard time watching this. The story was well written. Ironically even though it was edited in a non linear manner, the story itself is very linear without any noticeable plot holes, which I find to be rare in movies made in any era. The acting is outstanding, though every character is so depressed that it tends to bleed out of the screen and under your skin. It is worth it solely to see the outstanding lead performance of Phillip S. Hoffman. First time I noticed him was Mr. Ripley, and from that moment on I feel he has had no contemporary peers regarding acting talent, and this movie does not disappoint in that regard. Unlike similarly plotted movies of crimes going wrong with events spinning out of control, such as the immensely enjoyable Fargo, this film leaves you with relief simply because it is over. Just too depressing to fully enjoy.

Unless you are squeamish with violence or sexual assault. It is one of the very few movies ever with no wasted scenes. It is an homage to the complete history of movie making in one sitting.

Warning: Spoilers
And I was. This reminded me of an ABC After School Special from the 70's. I am giving it 2 stars because I have only seen one episode, but it was simply awful. Bad acting, terrible script, he is able to keep multiple fires burning while not attending to them, and the timeline of his eventual return to his old ways made no sense. From early morning to dark. He must have really slowed it down. As he walks through the town and every single person greats him like he is the most beloved person in the world reminded me of a Ned Flanders fantasy.

Unexpected darn good show
4 November 2021
Only two episodes in, and I love the premise. I can watch anything with Sam Richardson, possibly the funniest character on Veep. I also think Keith David is a master comedy actor and have difficulty when he plays dramatic roles because I want to laugh even when he is serious. Never even heard of this show until it popped up on Hulu. Definitely better than most streaming comedies.

Rationalization of a sociopath via wokeness
30 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Liz Carmichael was born a man who initially was an undoubtable criminal, who ditched 3 women he had children with, and while in his late 20's, eloped with a 16 year old girl, and continued to be a criminal. He ended up with 5 more children, and around 1969, while being a federal fugitive since 1961 for counterfeiting cash, started to transition into a woman. The cons continued. Then in 1974, she creates an obvious scam to sell a 3 wheeler car for $2K claiming it is bulletproof and gets 75 MPH, even though the prototype was non functioning. After conviction for fraud, she jumps bail, only to continue shady practices. The second half of this is basically a misguided history of transgendered people and how her treatment was the actual crime committed by this clear cut sociopath. The focus continues to be how her involvement with the car, called The Dale, was over prosecuted because she is transgendered. She was a fugitive dragging 5 children around the US for 12 or more years, never staying anywhere longer than 2 months. But, according to every person she ever encountered, she was the most wonderful person in the world. Never mind her decades of fraud victims. Ironically, I lived in the LA area while this was a heavily covered news item in the 70's while in high school. I have no memory of any of it, which is even stranger as my name is Dale.

Not a single real human in this show anymore
30 September 2021
Every single character speaks as if they are poets or authors. The daughters of Prince are even worse than the daughters of Dorn on GOT. How must Begosian feel to simultaneously play characters here and on Succession, where people are 3 dimensional and say stupid stuff all the time like real people? Plus the plot is sooo convoluted, who knows WTF is actually going on?

Elysium (I) (2013)
3/10
Decent first half, then turned into basic Hollywood fight movie.
21 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you are here reading this, you already know the basic plot via the other reviews, so I won't get into that. Early on in the film I really enjoyed the premise. Unfortunately, the most interesting part of the film, Elysium itself, is never really part of the plot. It simply becomes a background for an extended cliched fight for humanity, in what could be described as a gigantic multi-leveled automobile factory. So, instead of going down the road with dozens of potential plot possibilities with this rather fantastic looking space station utopia that we only see a few glimpses of, we get an exoskeleton assisted Karate movie. There are multiple other ridiculous plot holes I could forgive if the story was more interesting, but the second half was simply a fast foreword adrenaline ride made for people who think action is the only point to make a movie. Included in this movie was the single worst edit I have ever seen in a movie not made by Ed Wood. Spider and Max have a tense moment. Spider picked up a dime(?) and flips it to Max. Immediate cut to Spider lying up against a wall like he was throw, all f his men pointing weapons at Max, and Spider tells them not to shoot Max. I watched it 3 times. No idea what that silliness was about.

Shockingly realistic depiction of a crisis call center
3 September 2021
I worked a crisis line for over 25 years. We also saw some of the callers in person, either in the office, or at their home, as well as going out with police and going to hospital ER's. We were not volunteers, but the essence of the office environment, and the volunteers behaviors amongst peers, as well as the frustration in dealing with manny callers, is so on target with reality it makes me wonder how much research they do for an episode. Of course this timeframe is condensed into a week or so, staff training took months, and the chronic callers we dealt with called multiple times a day for literally years. The plot twists was not something to expect on the job, but the essence of a large part my career has never been summed up better than this 30 minute dark comedy.

Beautifully shot, with a major flaw
2 September 2021
I found this movie to be very well directed, edited, and acted. I loved the look of the whole movie. But what was missing was a coherent plot. Too many ridiculous coincidences that make no sense. Worth a watch, as plenty of people seem not too disappointed in the story, but it could have, and should have had a more logical plot. PS Hoffman does his usual scene stealing stuff, and that 5 minutes may be enough reason to watch it.

Not as horrible as some reviews, but not good.
1 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is like putting Independence Day, The Terminator, Starship Troopers, and Game of Thrones in a blender and making it far less than the sum of its parts. I could not believe the end was fighting White Walker aliens in Iceland, just like GOT. (I know it was supposed to be Russia, but it was filmed in Iceland, as was GOT) Dialogue was 90's sitcom like, plot full of holes, but I have to admit I have seen far worse movies in the 4 million hours of watching TV since the pandemic started late winter last year.

Nothing makes any sense.
6 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This may well be the stupidest show I have ever seen. Absolutely no part of the plot makes any sense. One minor example is the questions about a shotgun house. How could any resident of N. O. not know they vary? A more major examples are the mother accused of drug charges becomes the mother of the wrongly accused scapegoat in a matter of a day, with Cranston being involved in both scenarios. Is there only 200 people in New Orleans? Most of the obvious plot holes have already been repeatedly explained here, but soooo many more are too convoluted to put into words. Can't explain things that just make no sense at all. Had to quit at the beginning of episode 4.

Great self contained episode
29 April 2021
You can never have seen any other episode of the Sopranos and totally enjoy this one. It is less serious than most, but that is not detrimental. It is like a mini Scorsese movie, but actually meatier on plot than some of his early "classics". The plot revolves around the FBI attempting to bug Tony's house. There is no moments of confusion about what is going on due to never seeing previous episodes, and it wraps up neatly with clear indications it will be relevant in future episodes. Plus it has the GENIUS mash up of Peter Gunn and the Police Every Breath You Take, which as it is playing, fits the action on screen like a glove. Would rate it 10, but got to reserve that number for the best of the best. (Episode also does not have a Dr. Melfi scene, which is always a plus)

Double episode with many iconic moments.
23 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
From Frank emerging from a couch, Charlie attacking Santa Clause, and Mac's parents breaking into houses to steal Christmas gifts, few episodes have so may iconic scenes. The most incredible thing to me is the actor who portrays Mac as a 10 year old. He looks and acts just like the adult version. They both even throw rocks at trains left handed.
