A time capsule: France which doesn't exist anymore
16 December 2022
An early appearance of young, slender and long-haired Christian Clavier and Thierry Lhermitte, now French Super Stars, uncredited, as a paparazzi.

A solid computer-free crime flick with great actors, convincing camera work, and a well-written story. Even villains are pleasant to watch. Does a good job of conveying the zeitgeist of charming Europe ca 70s (before AIDS and political correctness) even with its shortcomings and cliches.

The short episode about Milwaukee Wisconsin looks cute and nostalgic.

I would recommend this film to cinematic time travelers desiring to escape the crazy modernity.

Music by François de Roubaix is remarkable.

An unexpected gem: philosophical and surprising.

Tulua, Valle Del Cauca, Colombia is there and it is real.

Devil takes innocence from Norwegians
4 September 2021
A lot of nice dry Scandinavian humor, unfortunately, lost in translation.

Obviously, the mobster is a devil himself. Norwegians are innocent aborigines.

The problems which inspired the satire are very real and serious. One Norwegian dude went totally mad and on July 22, 2011 visited the. Utøya island. The rest is history.

Old, sick, and Slavs.

3 stars for camera work and landscapes.

Too much pathos for an unprepared viewer.

How many European lives did failed British clandestine operations cost?

One day UK will pay reparations to all the countries its commandos operated in. The tragedy of petite nordic countries caught in a stupid war is not addressed by the script. The tragedies of locals who became hostage of British nincompoops - is not addressed.

On the contrary, the film implies that an average Bjørn has a reason to fight to death with an average Hans. While 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking (with Josef Mengele as a combat medic) was staffed with Nordic volunteers (~300 from Norway, ~ 400 from Finland, ~200 Danes, few Swedes and such) and not only fought with Russians, but exterminated Jews.

Why do local characters keep the mouths opened all the time? It doesn't help them looking smart. Interesting camera work and great landscapes. 5 stars for hyper-realism.

Watching this film 75 five years after: the chaplain was right. The godless Bolsheviks got defeated.

As a Russian, I couldn't help but notice that Soviet characters in this film lack depth and look like caricatures (except Irina, the female lead). This is understandable. Soviet propaganda circa 1943 did not bother with compassion to the enemy. To the author's credit -- he separated Soviets from Russians. Now, as of 2019, we know, that they were very different. And many Russians did not want to defend the rule of Soviets.

The film aged well. Its main message is still valid and relevant. A war between Europeans is an immense tragedy. Mutual animosity leads Europe to nowhere. Europe needs spiritual leaders who can rise above the fights -- usually instigated by third parties -- and bring peace using traditional European values.

Not Your Typical Goebbels Propaganda

This is much worse. Clearly, the film is not withstanding the test of time. Who and why financed it - is still a mystery. Too bad there was no politically motivated cinematography during the age of robber barons. Otherwise this one would have been a micro-sequel for "Vanderbilt".

A timeless classic based on a true story
7 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very accurate depiction of the siege of Alcazar. A great story of strength and faith. Actors playing Colonel Moscardo and his son Luis -- the hostage shot by the Reds - closely resemble originals. Here is the most tragic episode of the siege. Colonel Moscardó was called on the telephone by the chief of the Worker's Militia, Commissar Candido Cabello, on the morning of July 23 in Toledo and told that if the Alcázar were not surrendered within ten minutes, Moscardó's 24-year-old son, Luis, who had been captured earlier in the day, would be executed. Colonel Moscardó asked to speak to his son and his son asked what he should do. "Commend your soul to God," he told his son, "and die like a patriot, shouting,'¡Viva Cristo Rey!' and '¡Viva España!' The Alcázar does not surrender." "That," answered his son, "I can do." Luis was immediately shot, contrary to the rumor that he was not in fact shot until a month later "in reprisal for an air raid". A well made Italian film. Too bad it is hard to find an unedited politically-correct copy.

Avengers sans cheesy melodrama
29 October 2018
The story is a traditional fairy tale where sarcastic knights fight with a fiery multi-headed dragon. The knights manage to cut quite a few heads. And free an enchanted princess. With a bang.

French dare to say what the whole Europe thinks. Drugs are bad. Those who make and sell them are even worse. Militant cults are bad. Suicide bombers are even worse. They all deserve to die. Or should stay home and do something safe, productive, and useful for the humanity.

Travolta played a manly role model. Morel, Hasak, Besson delivered a modern - entertaining and inspiring - interpretation of an ancient European myth.

Prophetic precursor to Downfall / Der Untergang
14 December 2017
Watching this film through a historical rear-view mirror reveals plenty of of prophecies. Nazis managed to predict their own end and most of the movies about it - including the famous rant from Downfall played by the star of Youtube - Bruno Ganz. The trick to understanding the movie is - reversing key scenes in the right chronological order. It is unbelievable that German propaganda and censorship allowed this reel (which makes Eisenstein's Ivan Groznyy look like an étalon of subtlety) into theaters of a war-waging Germany. The best documentary evidence of the utter stupidity of Nazi state, which failed due to the irrational stupidity of its leadership.

Staple schlock from the Eastern block

Pure steam-punk - way before it became mainstream. As it was made by Habsburgs themselves. A perfect party movie. Pairs well with Dobrý voják Svejk, The Phantom of Morrisville, Pilsner, and Czech sausages. Chase with Becherovka. A great introduction to the peculiar art of Czech humour. Try to search for Jožin z bažin on youtube.

Did you notice Brigitte Bardot with a dill pickle in hand?

The best aphrodisiac for ambitious women is cash. Serge knew the secret to unlocking cash. Women wanted to know Serge to unlock him. So he could unlock cash for them. (Les Saucettes was The Mega Trolling of the 20th century)

As a first generation immigrant from Russia, I can easily identify with Serge's parents. From the parent's prospective - the film is spot-on about struggles of the second generation immigrants. Kids torn between two cultures. Not the poor-basketball-playing-refugee kind. But the over-educated middle class kind. Cursed with sensitive nature. Trying to fit in. And giving up.

Serge had given up. And killed himself slowly. That's the story.

Owen Wilson played the usual Woody Allen's part. And that's the good thing.
9 January 2017
30 years ago Woody would have played the protagonist himself and that would have been bad.

Owen Wilson is closer to an average creative American circa 2011. It is easier to empathize with his character. Woody Allen is an outlier and his presence turns the show into a satire.

I see how the film tells a story about a mythical Meta-Paris, a place and time where one feels happy, and empowered to control his environment and life.

The upper class Californians are spot on. I have met such a family when visiting the famous Hitler's Eagle Nest. (I wish Wood Allen had time for a plot like that: Midnight at Berchtesgaden).

I am giving only 8 stars because the American theme in the film is overblown and leaves no air for the European theme.

Prometheus. Blood. Honor.

Hypnotic scenery matching the scale of the Sonnenmenschen legend. The protagonist's epic ascension to the heaven with South American Alps as a backdrop. A beautiful story in 4 languages, retelling myths of Bariloche. I watched the film several times - without subtitles, without sound, and in black and white. Every time it was a different story: it started as another Nazi'xlpoitation flick, almost like Odessa files, and turned into a road movie, coming of age saga, Patagonian Lolita, and Dr. Faustus noir fairytale.

Lucia Puenzo, you are a magician.

I admire your maddening style of quiet ambivalence. Like the fleeing smile of Nora The Photographer. It is unusual and nice that interpretations and the final judgment are left to spectators. Plenty of untapped potential. Just imagine if authors openly took sides... :)
