Apart from a one-expression lead actress
1 January 2024
Apart from the fact that the lead actor Michelle Keegan in this series seems to have only one gear and one expression throughout the entire 8 episodes, despite some very high stakes, I found the story itself thrilling albeit farfetched. But SO SO odd that a lead actor can get away with not giving more than this, as if what we're seeing is a walk through rehearsal from her rather than the final product. A really bland performance. Do the two (male) directors imagine that the actor's attractiveness is enough?!! That viewers wont wonder why she seems so strangely disconnected?

Adeel Akhtar on the other hand is an absolute joy to watch as always.

Underwhelming and Mumbled
14 October 2023
Well as a Dane you sort of have to go see a film directed by Nikolaj Arcel, one of our most successful directors, and starring Mads Mikkelsen our most internationally celebrated actor. Now, in Denmark it's common knowledge that Mikkelsen has a tendency to mumble and can be hard to understand without subtitles, and alass no exception here! I wish I had waited for this to appear on Netflix so I could've turned the subtitles on. But HOW is this even possible? With all the post-production options there are of retaking lines? And Mikkelsen wasn't the only actor allowed to mumble.

I also felt that in the direction the actors' choices could have been a lot bolder. And the delivery of lines was often flat and lacking real intention, and real infusion of emotion, as if the director thinks 'flat' equals quiet and intense.

All in all pretty damn underwhelming!

This series thinks its progressive
23 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So this series likes to think it's progressive and a bit feminist but it really really isn't. We have a female ambassador (played very demonstratively by Keri Russell) who rants a lot and only wears black suits, she weighs about 40 kilos but eats loads of croissants and other fatty foods. She absolutely doesn't want to wear dresses especially the red ones...Whoops but that's only pretend cause inside she's really cinderella and so she turns up at the ball wearing a long RED dress.... Arrgh SO banale and cliché, and there are a huge amount of such clichés sprinkled throughout this series. Call the script police please!

Hits and misses
13 February 2023
I REALLY like some bits of this series and find other bits oddly off...as if they don't fit the rest of the story genre-wise. The most off bits are the scenes with Spencer and his love interest Alex. Unfortunately the casting of her really ruined those scenes for me. She is supposed to be British from London but speaks standard American and her too peroxide hair and a forever giggling, flirtatious 'vaudeville' acting (even in highly distressful scenes) means you can't take her seriously. She doesn't feel real, and so all those scenes just feel like a much less dramatic genre than the rest of the series where especially the scenes at the Indian nunnery school stand out in intensity. Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford's characters are also impeccable, nuanced and full of gravitas. All in all a great series but with a bit of genre confusion.

Shame about the stylist!
4 February 2023
Almost as great as the original American series! Except that the guy who finds new outfits is absolutely without talent, taste or style. I know Germans are not known for their chicness exactly...however in such a huge country Im sure there would be several thousand more able stylists than the one they unfortunately cast. Such a shame because the other guys are fab, especially the hairdresser and the interior decorator. So ALMOST good! But no matter what, I will recommend it, it is a sympathetic show which will brighten your day and enhance the lives of the chosen 'protagonist' of each episode.

Great actors in crap melodrama
11 February 2022
This film was SO predictable SO boring SO filled with clichés and the set looked like a tired theatre set. What these A-list actors ever saw in this drab script Id really like to know. But perhaps they just presumed del Toro was a safe bet?....nope! Im BAFFLED that this film is currently getting such a high rating.

I want my money back Guillermo!!

Disappointingly banale
25 January 2022
Too many one-dimensional characters in this one! And weird casting: for instance Carrie Coon who is awkwardly stiff; and another of Meryl Streeps daughters...who I think only got into drama school cause of her mum. She has the charisma of a potted plant. Sorry, but talent isn't hereditary.

But the storyline too is full of klichées: the GOOD black girl who gets completely integrated into the white Van Rhijn household within just a few days! The scheming maid in the Russell household who is out to seduce Mr Russell and too demonstratively so. I could go on and on....

If not for Max Irons...
23 October 2021
If not for the dull, charisma-less Max Irons this might have been interesting. Why oh why do casting directors cast someone just for being the offspring of brilliant actor parents? Its a waste of our time and a shame for the art that could have been. There are so many talented actors out there!!! Use them please.

Entertaining but...je ne sais quoi
2 April 2021
This series works well! Its well cast ...BUT why oh why do the producers choose to let Jenna Coleman , who plays a French woman, speak french when she is no where close to sounding native? It simply breaks the illusion in a massive way.

Why on earth didnt they just dub her french lines??

Stilted acting & poor script
5 February 2021
Arggh, disappointed about this one, since I usually enjoy watching Sofia Helin and Tobias Santelmann. But there is too much stilted acting (mostly from minor characters) and 'theatre acting' that should have been amended by the director. That and the questionable historical 'facts' make you wonder WHY this film project? If you want to know about this particular period in Norways history go watch The King's Choice instead with wonderful Danish actor Jesper Christensen as the aging King.

Such a disappointing ending
1 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
After such a build up of guilt against Jonathan Fraser during several episodes you'd expect a twist at the end and a surprise. But nothing. The actress nicole kidman again gets to play the innocent victim, posing her way through her scenes rather than acting, and this 6 part mini series ends up telling us nothing new. Waste of time.

Just watch the original instead!!
3 October 2020
Why do a remake of a brilliant film? Why? And in that remake of a swedish masterpiece why let some actors speak in more or less believable scandinavian accents and some not?? I say, just watch the original, its more moving, subtler AND yes authentic🌟

Why cast Kerry Washington?
8 June 2020
Yeah so I ask why cast Kerry Washington? Cause she's pretty? But can she act? She looks arrogant and hard whatever she does and you just dont get why a sweet albeit busybody woman like Withersppon's character would ever rent out to a cold person like Washington's. I gave up on this series! A shame cause I adore a lot of the cast in this series.

Miscast Morse
9 May 2020
I guess this show could have been great with the right actor playing young Morse but Shaun Evans just doesn't have the leading-man-charisma nor the soulfullness of John Thaw's Morse. All Shaun Evans seems to do is to try to 'act brooding'. Only Roger Allam's gravity makes this series watchable for me.

Overrated beware!
2 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Im a huge fan of Elisabeth Moss, as far as Im concerned because of The Handmaids Tale she can do no wrong! And its absolutely not her fault that this film feels like a flop but I must admit Im at a loss as to why on earth she has chosen to do this project. There is too much in the 'invisible' story that feels technically banale and underwhelming. Scenes that would have been so much more thrilling by staying subtle goes full gore. And there is a tendancy to overact in some parts of the film. Also I lost belief in miss Moss's character when at the end her untill then grounded and 'innocent' character suddenly becomes an unsophisticated murderess herself, poor script. Shame!

Ludicrous casting
3 August 2019
This film could have been great with a more believable female lead than Keira Knightley. Instead of casting an actual musical talent for the role of the rough diamond discovered by Mark Ruffalo's producer-character the makers of this film thought theyd better cast a 'box office actress' who absolutely isnt a good singer and SO not a believable shooting star singer/musician, and so the film looses you from the very beginning. Mark Ruffalo always gives a film weight but there is too much cliché in the story telling here.

Really authentic characters
11 February 2019
Im more and more impressed with this series. Watched season 1 a few years ago and am watching season 2 now. And season 2 is even better that the first one. All characters look and feel real and true to life. There is no hollywood-slick surface here...oh boy could California learn from these Icelanders. Especially the two main characters played by Olafur Darri Olufsson and Ilmur Kristjansdottir are amazing. Dont miss it!

Very dissapointed with season 2
14 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I loved season 1 of Marcella but was very dissapointed with the new season where the plot derails and loses grounding completely. Why oh why cant the scriptwriters just trust that the great characters will carry the viewers through instead of fretting and then inventing an impossible and implausible storyline where even our detective heroine's young son is almost killed by the Frankenstein-mousy-midwife....FARFETCHED

Amazing in parts
3 June 2018
Im in two minds over this film. On one hand Denzel Washington is always incredible and interesting, on the other hand the whole side story with drug addict girl played by Kelly Riley just didnt work for me, I dont get why this actress was cast in this part apart from the fact she was trending at the time and maybe that she has big breasts. Its a sad and at times thrilling story of a gifted pilot who is also an ardent alcoholic. But again, the thrill stalls everytime the scenes with 'Nicole' are playing......a shame.

Too many Italian clichés
15 May 2018
Im very torn on this series. On one hand I really enjoy the scenes with Donald Sutherland and Brendan Fraser but all the scenes involving the kidnappers in Italy are so cliché and the build up to the molestation of young Getty is SO londwinded and not thrilling. I feel they should have cut a lot of these scenes out and depicted the italian characters in a more nuanced fashion instead of painting a picture of all italians being potential mafiosi.

This series lacks grounding
28 January 2018
For me, a Dane who lives in Copenhagen, this series lacks that feeling of realness which you need to accept the extreme characters and stories. In season 1 when Kim Bodnia played Sofia Helin's sidekick there was more grounding there. Sadly, with Thure Lindhart, one of the most overrated Danish actors, there is no real character there, and poor Sofia Helin - a Swedish powerhouse - has to act opposite something that feels like a little lost kid. I'm a fan of Sofia Helin but I feel that the director(s) should have helped her more with her Asperger-character 'Saga Norén' to make it more rounded and less of a caricature. The idea of 'Broen' is great. I believe the fault lies in the casting and directing dept.

Murdered on the Avalanche Express
17 December 2017
Oh where to start? I was 'estranged' from the very beginning of this film by Branagh's appalingly bad French (Belgian) accent and the ditto upstaging moustache. In general his pompous narcissistic acting style distracted me from following the story. The rest of the cast is glorious, although several of them get very little time on screen. The most interesting character in this remake is Johnny Depp's Ratchett but of course he is only in the first half of the film. Also the count and countess characters (the count is played by one of the worlds greatest ballet dancers Sergei Polunin) get hardly any lines or screen time, and we dont see Polunin dance for one second all though the characters are described as ballet dancers. The derailing of the train is very hard to believe, and 'the last supper' at the end of the film is so over the top and tasteless, as is Kenneth Branagh's lines 'Only two people know the truth, one is God and the other is Hercule Poirot!' - a pompous line delivered in an equally pompous way, honestly....Mr Branagh is one of the most overrated actors of our time. Less is more Kenneth!

Highstrung empty career creatures
19 October 2017
This Potter film paints a bleak picture of modern people. There isn't ONE person in this cast of 7 whom the audience can really sympathise with. The 7 characters call themselves friends but treat each other with hostility, dishonesty etc. Too me it felt more like an unreal vacuum of lovelessness than a real group of people. Even the super-talented Cillian Murphy comes across as one-sided and overacting. The 'twist' at the end is also not very interesting and a bit of a cliché. I've seen much better work from Sally Potter!

Yawn Yawn Yawn...
25 September 2017
Even Diane Lane looks and feels lost in this so called film by Mother Coppola (Francis Fords wife and Sofia's mother was bored and wanted to be a film maker too). No plot and no on-screen chemistry between the two protagonists. This movie wants to be a road-movie through sensual France but is nothing but a super huge cliché and doesn't draw you in emotionally at all. Don't go to the cinema for this one!

'Impressive' but empty and without plot
4 September 2017
Almost 2 hours of different art manifestos performed by Cate Blanchett who plays many different characters that aren't interconnected. There is no plot or story and although Mrs Blanchett is a very able and efficient actress none of it touches you and you don't get where its all going, what did the director want with this? Apart from showing us how clever he is? It reminds me more of a museum/video-installation type of thing than something you would put in a cinema.
