Not much of a date movie unless your date is millennial age
31 January 2024
This could have been a fun rom-com... it came close, it had beautiful people in beautiful places with a decent amount of chemistry between them. It would have been easy to forgive the tired, Hallmark-channel plot that we've seen, literally a hundred times before, but I guess they really wanted to distance themselves from the Hallmark comparison so they added WAY too much profanity, a little bit of nudity, and a side-dish of vulgarity.

I don't have a problem setting it apart with a little bit of sexiness and a higher budget, and I'm not such a prude that a *few* vulgar jokes ruin a movie for me, but what does ruin a movie for me, especially when I'm watching it with my wife, is the continuous use of profanity. It's absolutely LAZY writing and indicative of an infantile mindset... epecially when NONE of it was justified in context at all.

If you're a writer who can't get your point across without peppering your script with a hundred "f---"s then you're just not very good at your craft... and to many of us, it shows a huge amount of disrespect for your audience and a self-declaration of your commonness... and it's a huge turnoff. Maybe this is how younger people have been taught to speak now, but no one I've ever worked/lived-with/near does.

I will likely never watch this movie again, nor will I recommend it to anyone, even though with just a little discipline on the part of the writers and director, and small amount of editing, it could have been a good, fun date movie, instead of being juvenile and offensive. But if adults being incapable of behaving like adults doesn't bother you, go for it... you'll probably enjoy it.

American Travelers (2016– )

An inspiring travel show!
16 March 2023
American Travelers was a great find! While it may not have all the pomp and pizazz of a big, high-budget production, what it does have in personality and charm. The Loskos are personable and just feel like real people who have a passion for sharing their travel experiences with others. You start to think of them as friends showing you their (very well made) travel videos.

Because on this personal touch, they feel especially inspiring... like "well, if these guys can visit these semi-exotic places and have fun doing it, we can too!" and next thing you know, you're googling travel packages online.

Keep traveling, Loskos, and we'll be out here waiting to learn more about your adventures!

Interminable
23 January 2023
One of the most boring movies I've ever watched. About 40 minutes into it I made a comment that the actors seemed so bored to be working on this movie and not more than a minute later there's a "what do you want to do now" / "I don't know, what do you want to do" exchange. They're as bored as I am. If you saw the trailer, as I did about a million times last year, you've pretty much heard the few good lines.

And you'll definitely want the captions turned on since half the time they just mumble through their boredness.

And you don't really like or care about any of the characters... I just kept rooting for the monsters.

Christmas with a View (2018 TV Movie)

I really wanted to like it
5 December 2022
I really wanted to like it but it just doesn't deliver. A good cast, high production values, a story that's nothing new but meant to be fun. The acting's okay and the main character, Clara, is gorgeous, but without giving anything away, there's a couple of face-palmingly contrived scenes and dumb plot devices, and Clara makes so many assumptions and dramatic over-reactions that poison her potential relationship that you just want to give her a time-out and tell the guy to run away.

I don't think it would take a lot to make this a better movie, but I'm not sure what it would be. Maybe if the characters would just talk instead of reacting.

One of the great films of our daughter's childhood
27 September 2022
I don't know why people hate on this movie so much - I guess it's a misplaced loyalty to the original, or perhaps some animosity towards Lohan, but even as a gray-haired older guy, I think this is one of the stand-out films of my daughter's childhood.

We haven't seen this one in years (but will soon!) but have probably seen it 8 or 10 times. I understand the love of the original, but in my opinion, this version is better directed, better written, better acted, better produced, has fun music, and is paced so much better.

This should be considered a total classic of family movies.

A totally fun, somewhat sappy, feel-good movie.

So disappointing
15 August 2022
While not "horrible", it is a huge disappointment. Actually kind of boring... and when it comes to action.adventure movies I don't think I'm that picky.

Best thing I can say about it is that it makes the recent "The Lost City" look better by comparison.

An absolutely wonderful series (so far) with incredible jerks, incredibly human, optimistic, and compassionate heroes, great character development and a perfect mix of comedy and heart.

We love everything about it except for the excessive profane language. If they could use their considerable writing talent to cut out more of the foul language this could be one of the best comedies ever made.

Mostly boring look at mostly miserable people. Gee, what entertainment!
1 August 2021
Yeah, it's an important message to help us better understand the secret lives of those around us, just don't call it entertainment.

I knew going in that it was going to cover at least 1 miserable person, but I had no idea that it was ONLY going to cover miserable people. I'd have liked a little balance to it... certainly not every one of the 130,000 residents is a dysfunctional or miserable as the ones this filmmaker decided to focus on. Not only does it give a biased view of life in the community, but it's just not that pleasant to watch. And, I'm sorry, but it didn't seem particularly well made either. Film school project at best.

I guess people praise documentaries, especially serious one, because they think they're supposed to. I'd have rather seem this as a 20-minute segment on a news magazine show than a waste of 90 minutes of my life.

If you have the patience...
30 July 2021
It's a meaningful message, nicely visually presented, but this is for aficionados of agonizingly slow "art films" only.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, everyone hates them for standing up for what's right. Get on with it already.

1:45 minutes into it I realized I had another 1:15 to go and had to shut it off before my family beat me into a small puddle of pudding. Maybe someday I'll try to make it through the rest to see if it ever wakes up.

Depraved
19 June 2021
Worst. B&B. Ever. 0 stars on Yelp.

Good concept poorly executed. I think it's trying to be an "artsy", psychological, horror film, but it's just disturbing - but not in a good way.

The first half is so boring you actually start hoping something depraved will happen just to break the endless monotony.

The second half serves up the depravity in spades. You pretty much know how it's going to go and you wish it would just hurry up and end the pain.

I honestly cannot think of one good thing to say or how this movie adds to our world or cinematic culture in any positive way.

I'll give it two stars for an interesting idea and its choice of end music. Everything else is a complete waste of time and sensibility. I pity all those involved with making or funding this ridiculous excuse for "entertainment".

Star Trek: Voyager: The Thaw (1996)
Season 2, Episode 23
2/10
Cringeworthy
15 February 2021
As a huge Star Trek fan of 45 years, I just started rewatching the Voyager series. I do not recall having ever seen this episode before - possibly because I repressed it. I can now declare that of all the series and all the episodes, this is the worst episode ever made.

I can't strand the horrible, garish visuals, the chaos, the maniacal laughing of McKean's character. I hope to never see this episode again.

It's story wasn't horrible - just the implementation of it. This kind of psychological story could have been told in many different ways than this clownish nightmare circus that seems to drag on for hours.

I hope I can sleep after this mess without going into fits of projectile vomiting - which I would find more enjoyable than re-watching this episode.

Wrapped in garbage
18 May 2020
Yet another premium series that takes a 25% good idea and wraps it with 75% garbage. This show embraces every vulgar and disgusting behavior they can come up with - in fact it seems to be their mission to see how vile they can be. Story's not enough anymore - you have to push the envelope of civility to succeed I guess.

Apparently, to be considered a "writer" in the era of cable/streaming programming all you have to do is demonstrate that you can use the F-word in at least every-other sentence. Writers with no discipline, little creativity, no class, and no talent.

The actors, editors, and cinematographers all do a fine job, but why they want to waste themselves on this kind of stuff is beyond me.

We've managed to make it through the first three because of the 25% that's intriguing, hoping they will accelerate the time until the emperor dies so that it can (hopefully) become less foul, but from the IMDB credits, it looks like we're stuck with this vile character for at least the season, so we may not last much longer.

Let It Snow (2019)
8/10
Liked it waaay more than I expected to.
6 December 2019
We just watched this movie on Netflix and I enjoyed it way more than I expected to - but I have no idea who to recommend it to.

It's meant for a younger generation than mine, but most younger folks are going to see the description of "Let it Snow" and think it's a dumb Hallmark Christmas movie for old people. Older people are going to start watching it, thinking it's a delightful new Hallmark Christmas movie, then throw down their plate of chicken-fried-steak in disgust and yell at their TV "I'm not watching this junk, what's the matter with kids today?!" and switch over to Wheel of Fortune.

As a youth leader at church, I can't directly recommend it to sensitive church friends or impressionable young folks because the movie has some (light) teenage drinking and a bit of profanity and a constant modern music score (which is neither good nor bad, just unexpected in a "Christmas" movie) and one of story threads is (light) LGBT. (There is no sex or violence or anything scary, and there is a lot of good, uplifting humanity in it as well.)

Yes, it features a lot of angsty, dramatic teens in a whole lot of angsty, dramatic, (and stereotypical) situations, but at the end of the day, it was both familiar AND fresh. I thought it was REMARKABLY well written, acted, and authentic.

Although primarily a drama (I guess), it had a lot of humor and managed to do what few movies can pull off - it made me laugh (or at least softly snicker in delight) and I didn't have to be embarrassed by any of the things that made me chuckle.

It currently has a mediocre 5.8 on IMDB, but I can't help but wonder if that was mostly from old farts expecting a Hallmark movie. I give it an 8. Personally, I would put it right up there with my generation's "The Breakfast Club"... only better!

Very disappointed
19 October 2019
A very beautiful and well-acted film... that is unfortunately full of petty little people taking pleasure in the grief of the good. Absolutely hated the story. Nothing affirming in any way, and I'm not one to automatically be against melodramatic films, but at the end of the day, this one offers nothing of value. I'd give detailed examples but I don't want to spoil it for the masochists that still decide to watch it.

Boring
9 October 2019
MILD SPOILERS - mentions things that would have completely unimportant in most films, but as there is not much of a plot, here some might consider them spoilers.

I saw a bunch of really good reviews on Amazon so I had to give it a try. I love quirky comedies (ie: Tucker and Dale vs Evil) but this movie is just plain dumb and boring.

One reviewer described it as "family friendly". Really? He must have had some interesting parents. The F-word is used 5 times in the first MINUTE and many more times after. There are jokes and similar low-class gags.

There are numerous repetitive scenes of three losers sitting in a strip club, doing nothing of interest except demonstrating how they didn't get their money's worth from acting class..

The first 50% of the movie is Joe teaching "Blaire" the words for different items and a running, tedious, gag about her fondness for Red Bull.

Very low budget. There is almost no score, and every shot is static which makes for a very flat experience. The scenes with a score came close to professional - the rest felt like a home movie with good cameras. Many of the scenes are slow, depressed, and drag. The actors do not appear to be enjoying themselves most of the time. Acting: not consistent, but good enough (with a couple of exceptions).

A really anti-climactic ending that reflects the overall morose and boring tone of the whole movie.

The actresses are cute and the main character is a likable goof, but that's not enough to sustain a movie. The script is abysmal and barely tweaks the laugh meter. I really wanted it to be "fun", but unless you watch it while drunk or stoned, it's really not very funny or interesting.

I'm going to mark this review as containing spoilers, but it's a pretty sad indictment of the movie when a Red Bull gag is the most significant part of the story. I applaud the effort, but it didn't cut it. A very long 72 minutes that could have been cut in half.

It just ended and my wife's first comment is: "Can we watch something good now?"

A story of love
7 February 2019
I have to say, I'm profoundly disappointed by the reviews that trashed this movie because the subjects of the movie were Mormon - you wouldn't even know it until the end, and even then there was nothing to be worked up about, unless you are so afraid of the Mormons that a scene of missionaries offering words of comfort to a bereaved family somehow scares you. There is not one drop of evil or ill-will in this film. Just pretend the young men in suits that only occupy a couple of minutes of the film are old men in robes, and you'll get over it.

That aside - is this a perfect movie? Nah. It's a bit forced and manipulative, but it's also a wonderful story of love. Love of family. Love of a community, and yes, love of God. It might be a bit heavy for young children, but a perhaps a good movie for them anyway. This is a true story whose sole purpose is go inspire and comfort. For a low budget, independent film, the production values and acting aren't bad either. Thank you for sharing your family with us.

We don't want an art film from you Bonanza
22 October 2018
I haven't seen every episode, but the half I've seen, this one is the dumbest. The tedious delirious dream sequences are seriously cringe worthy. I agree with the first reviewer that the director was definitely going for a Hitchcockian vibe here, but it felt really out of place in Bonanza. At least I know the next one will be better... it has to be!

What a missed opportunity. Vulgar and unlikable.
6 August 2018
A great idea with talented cast, but really just another juvenile, vulgar script that takes all the lightness out of the concept and replaces it with flat humor, thoroughly unlikable characters, and dull crude dialog fitting an undisciplined child. What a waste.

Charlie's Angels: Marathon Angels (1979)
Season 3, Episode 19

Entire production crew should have been fired. Worst episode ever.
30 July 2018
Charlie's Angels is a fun show. My wife and I have been watching the first three seasons, and this is easily one of the most idiotic episodes of any TV show ever broadcast. 75% of the episode is simply video of girls running in a foot race with the stupidest, campiest, music you ever heard repeated over and over until your every nerve is on edge and you want to scream.

There's a small sub-plot about exploiting women - which is ironic since this entire episode is just one big example of exploitation because it has absolutely nothing to offer except watching women run.

A fun, wholesome movie for every one
6 May 2016
You don't have to be a 12 year old girl to enjoy this film. My wife and I (50 years old) have watched this movie twice and we love it. Yeah, it's full of stereotypes and there's nothing especially groundbreaking here, but it's fun, wholesome, has some nice music, and is remarkably well produced for such a small budget film. I can see bright futures for several of the actors in this film as well.

Most of the reviewers feel compelled to mention Mormonism (many of the makers of this film are LDS and it was originally released to target LDS audiences in Utah) but rest assured if you're one of those folks that have unfortunately formed some weird preconceived notion of what that means, get over it! Yes, I think these characters and values do accurately reflect LDS members, but I can't fathom how this movie would be any different if you substituted any other church. And it's NOT a preachy church movie! Just characters with good and wholesome values who are having a great experience at Bible camp. Drat! Now I went and mentioned it too!

Just relax and have fun. Share it with your kids and grand kids. There are some wonderful messages here, especially for the young ladies.
