Not sure who exactly this movie is for
21 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
So first off, overall I didn't hate this movie, bit there were parts I hated. I hate gross-out humor. And this movie had it in spades. However, there were also moments I liked, such as the ending where the digs found forever homes/ happiness. I also enjoyed the revenge enacted on Reggie's horrible owner, played by Will Forte. That, too had a gross-out element when one of the bigger digs defecated in the guy's mouth. I was fine with it, though, since animal abusers deserve every bad thing that happens to them. In fact, I haven't hated a character this much since Harvey Keitel's character in "Two Evil Eyes." So the tone shifts between gross-out comedy and some genuine heartfelt moments. There's also a couple of horrifically dark moments. In one, a "narrator dog" points out that a guy flirting with a girl is serial killer with three bodies in his backyard. In another, the group of dogs eat some mushrooms, trip out, and slaughter a group of bunnies. Both are out of place in what seems to be a comedy. And speaking of drugs, this movie has an 80s Ronald Reagan attitude toward them. Besides the mass bunny slaughter on mushrooms, the horrible dog owner is shown smoking pot in many scenes. Nobody else in the movie is. It's as if they're saying that if you smoke pot, you're a terrible human being. Or that you'll only do violent, horrific things on mushrooms. So I don't dig that propaganda either. The ending was sweet, though, so I'll give it a few points for that. Overall, though, I can't recommend it.

Ignore the bad reviews
20 August 2023
So far I've counted three people who gave this show a bad review that have terrible opinions of other shows and movies. One of them stated that Miyazaki's films are all the same and that all of his movies fail. You know, the director who won an Oscar for one of those "failed" movies. Anyway, that's the type of galaxy brained individual who thinks this show is bad. Take the opinion of anyone giving this show a bad review with a grain of salt.

Anyway, this is a charming, funny and touching show. It's very much slice of life, but after being fatigued by bombastic comic book nonsense, I welcome the simplicity. The characters feel like real people. They are likable, but with flaws that make them interesting. I decided to check this show out because I'm a fan of Taika's other show, What We Do in the Shadows, another show I adore.

If you're a fan of something that is funny and entertaining, but not too grandiose, I highly recommend checking it out.

A Bland Reboot that doesn't really bring much to the table
16 July 2023
I guess the director wanted to tell some sort of story to give motivation to why the kids did the killing, but it wasn't necessary. Remember how much more unnerving Michael Myers was when he had no motivation or reason for killing? And then how all that terror was thrown out the window when Rob Zombie came along and was like "actually it was because Michael had abusive redneck parents." The same mistake happens here. In the original, the kids wreak havoc solely because of the influence of He Who Walks Behind the Rows. They kill for no reason, other than their victims are adults. Here, they are given motivation, thereby eliminating any real dread.

Also, I've never seen a group of characters with a startling lack of agency since Midsommer. The difference between this and Midsommer was that Midsommer actually felt like it had something to say about toxic relationships and coping mechanisms. The only thing I could glean from Children of the Corn was "GMOs bad" maybe?

I gave one star extra for some of the kills, and another because the little girl antagonist looked like she was having fun, but this one is easily skippable.

Disappointing
1 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's a quote by Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle that applies to this movie: "I expected nothing and I was still disappointed." I went in not expecting much, and I still hated this movie. The problem is that all of the segments had terrible execution. There was a brief moment when I was starting to feel a bit of terror when a young girl is buried alive in a coffin and water starts pouring in. Then a cheap jump scare happens with an actor in subpar makeup and it completely ruined any tension or terror. It's like what a ten year old would think is scary. The last segment wasn't too horrible, but the Hell set looked like something out of a junior high play. I'll give a half star for that segment and another half star for Ozzy's Dungeon, which would have made a decent short film in the hands of a competent writer. Maybe have the rest of the family obsessed with revenge while the daughter just wants to move on with her life. But, the whole movie it seems like it's the daughter who is killing the people involved with her injury. A little bait and switch to keep the viewer guessing.

Gawker and the one with the zombie riot grrl band were bland and forgettable. The cgi snake hair was particularly atrocious.

The other V/H/S films all had a least one good or at least noteworthy segment. All of the segments in this installment were bland and predictable, insultingly bad, or wasted potential.

Too Loud (2017– )
7/10
Not a masterpiece, but not as bad as everyone else says it is.
3 July 2022
I won't proclaim this a masterpiece, but this isn't nearly as bad as the other reviewers claim it is. One star is a bit of hyperbole. Nothing really stands out, though I like the voice cast and there are some entertaining visual gags, which do elevate the show above star. Not sure where people got the idea that it ripped off "The Loud House." Sure, the character designs are similar. (and the word "Loud" is in the title of both shows,) but it's a bit of stretch to claim it ripped off The Loud House. You might as well say that Star vs the Forces of Evil copied Steven Universe since both have CalArts character design and both shows have the name of something to do with space in their titles.

Ignore the haters, check it out, and draw your own conclusions. If you still hate it, fine, but don't let the one star troll brigade deter you from seeing it.

Ms. Marvel (2022)

Not sure where all the hate is coming from.
16 June 2022
Actually, I know exactly where it's coming from: Chuckleheads who use the terms "woke" or "too political" as a response to the main character not being a straight white male. I like these smaller scale Marvel shows. The lead actress is phenomenal and the supporting cast is a lot of fun. The visuals help make the story more engaging. The story may not be complex, but why should it be? I'm getting Spider-Man vibes with an air of mystery as to the origins of the bangle that gives Kamala her powers. Not everything needs to be Infinity War.

As for cultural appropriation, I'm not sure about that. I don't know much about Middle Eastern culture, but the name of the showrunner looks Middle Eastern to me, so I'm disinclined to believe the accusations. I'm not sure if they're from actual Middle Easterners, guilty white liberals, or just plain trolls engaging in rabblerousing for yucks. Nothing I've seen seems to be making fun of the culture. In fact, that Eid Mubarak looked kinda fun tbh.

As for the cringe element, the show centers around teenagers. Of course there's gonna be cringe. Were you cool in high school? Maybe, but statistically you were more likely cringe to some degree. Which is fine. Point is, being as the show is centered around teenagers, I'd be surprised if there wasn't cringe.

I'm 100% convinced that most of the 1 star reviews are right-wing trolls mad that yet another Marvel show isn't focused on some white dude. I'm a white dude. I've seen plenty of shows focused on my people. I want some variety.

I can't say I love the show, but it's got enough to keep me interested. After the sixth episode has aired, I will adjust my rating accordingly.

Ignore the simpletons that gave this a low score.
2 October 2021
First off, this is not a horror movie in the usual sense. It is more a ghost story and a tale of loss. You'll likely figure out the twist early, but the two child actresses sell the story and keep you invested.

The people that rated this low are likely the types of mouthbreathers that just want lots of spooky jumpscares and gore. If you're this type, you'll likely hate this movie. But if you want a slow, but steady study on grief, loss and letting go, give this one a look.

Meh.
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is currently sitting at 4 stars, and that feels about right to me. There was a skeleton of a good idea here, and a good writer could have made it work. But, I guess all the good writers wee on vacation. For one, everything is telegraphed to the point where literally nothing in it shocked me. The head bashing scene was intense and gory, but you'd have to be braindead to have not seen it coming a mile away. Especially after that monologue. And sure, it was heartwarming, but we already know the guests were possessed by demons. Did anyone seriously think it was going to end happy? The characters also all make stupid decisions. They are willfully ignorant of everything around them. They have little to no agency. The actors did good with what they are given, so I won't fault the actors. I just hope they get better roles next time.

I pretty much wanted this guy to die once he murdered a cat for no reason.
18 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Protip forf any director out there: If your protagonist outrights murders a cat or a dog, they are no longer a sympathetic being. I kept hoping he would die after murdering the cat, but unfortunately he survived.

Also, the movie was just kind of boring and bought nothing new to the table.

We are introduced to another survivor in the third act, but by this point I was too bored to care and I also was disappointed the main protagonist was still alive. Seriously, to hell with that dude.

Ignore the simpletons who give this 1 star
19 February 2021
This special is like ordering a ride from Uber, getting in the car, and realising the driver has done a few rails. And even worse, he has no intention of driving you to your destination. And he keeps making random stops. But, you can't get out and run away screaming or the ride will be over and you'll be stuck in a weird part of town, terrified and alone. Stick to the end and you'll reap the rewards, because as anyone with half a brain knows, it's not the destination, it's the journey. Or you can stay home and watch Armageddon for the 23th time and pretend you have a fulfilling life. Your call.

Season 3, Episode 16
10/10
Whoever rated this a 1 has no joy in their life and aren't as intelligent as they think
7 January 2021
The episode was fine. It was nice to have Abed operate outside of his comfort zone of always having Troy around. Also, I actually prefer the Britta/Troy ship over the Britta/Jeff ship. Though I have no idea how it will play out as this is the current episode I'm on.

I'm not going to write paragraphs defending it. If you liked it, great. If not, and you gave it a one and insulted anyone who liked it, then I hope you will someday recover from the debilitating brain damage you have clearly sustained.

Also, I rated this a 10 to offset the rating of 1 foolishly given to it by a certain deluded individual who clearly never got hugged as a child.
