Hubie Halloween (2020)
Adam Sandler's favorite easy comedy formula
Simple-minded annoying childish lead character + unfunny jokes + stupid comments with sex cognotation + famous people cameos + Sandler's friends = another Adam Sandler's lame comedy
Unpregnant (2020)
Funny road trip to unpregnant
Forget the abortion issue, it's not the main topic of the movie, it's just the excuse. I read people complaining the film missed the chance to make people change their minds about abortion or at least educate them. What a stupid thing to said. It's a comedy with just the enough amount of drama, not a documentary or a propaganda video. The movie's main intent is to entertain, not to educate or try to force people to change what they think about the subject.
Unpregnant is a really funny movie about friendship, second chances and a great short road trip. The main performances are awesome, both actresses have a solid chemistry. I really like to see them together on another production. I especially loved Barbie Ferreira's character; sinic, tough and funny, but like every human being (teenagers in particular) with life problems to solve.
The movie has its problems, like a bunch of clichés (you can see most of the time what's coming) and some characters have confusing personalities during the film (I don't know if they were poorly written or they had to make them like that to fix the plot holes). Nevertheless it's a really enjoyable film.
Whatever your opinion on abortion is, leave it aside. It's not important. Just relax and enjoy the funny road trip. You are gonna laugh, for sure.
Enola Holmes (2020)
No need to be a Holmes to solve this movie...
I'm not going to judge the movie based on the books (which I didn't read) or the legal issue with the original stories of Sherlock Holmes. Just the movie itself.
You don't have to be a Holmes to figure out the whole plot of the movie. It's filled with clichés, you can see everything that's coming, from the jokes (it tries to be a funny movie but fails) to the villain.
The way it's filmed it tries to emulate the other Holmes films, but for teenage audience. It's well done except for the fourth wall breaking. It's not used in the correct way, is annoying and the constant looking of Enola directly to the camera without saying anything gives the movie an essence of a lame actress (which is not the case with Millie Bobby Brown) that forgets that she is filming and looks where she shouldn't. The same goes with all the feminist messages in the movie. Most of them are forced. You don't have to say all the time that the female character is clever and strong, as good as her brother Sherlock, just show it, make the audience believe that with her actions, not with words coming all the time from other characters mouths. That's how you deliver a powerful messages especially to the young audience, well executed actions mean more than repetitive phrases.
Most of the characters are well done (some are clichés but work). Millie Bobby Brown performance is solid (despite the fourth wall issue), Helena Bonham Carter is great, just another walk in the park for her tho, it's not a complicated character (which I wish appeared more in the movie) and Henry Cavill is ok, not the usual Sherlock but at times the classic character comes out and shines.
Nevertheless is an enjoyable movie, a new perspective that needs to be polished. Not the detective movie to rack your brains out, but the one to turn them off and relax.
Lost Girls and Love Hotels (2020)
Lost girl, lost story
The title says it all. A story of a lost girl with no focus and no ambitions that likes to get drunk and have sex with random guys at love hotels. Nothing remarkable about this story, there are millions of lost girls out there all around the globe that have this kind of life. They tried to make it exotic by picking an american girl in Japan but that doesn't make it special at all.
Nevertheless it is well shot. Some of the scenes are a bit dark and with weird angles (in particular when they try to cut Alexandra Daddario's nudity) but it's part of the essence of the movie.
I really appreciate that Alexandra Daddario is trying to explore new horizonts and different roles with these kind of films, but in my opinion she has to pick a little bit better focusing more on the quality of the story and not just the type.
Antebellum (2020)
Keep watching till it hits you...
If you didn't know anything about the movie prior watching it like me (no trailers watched or sinopsis read) you are going to start watching this movie and you are not going to understand what the hell is going on. Trust me, keep watching and in the third act you are going to say OMG. It's a really great plot twist. It's difficult to stay watching till you understand the story but for me is worth it. Just try to pay attention to every small detail and the twist is going to hit you hard like it did to me.
It's really beautifully filmed and has some awesome shots, but the performances has it ups and downs. Sometimes they are really good but others are over the top. This last happens especially in the second act where the most boring and really poor written and acted scenes take place. Not even Janelle Monáe that carries the whole story on her back can escape the lame second act.
Some may say it's a story that falls into common african american culture topics. To be honest, they are right. But trust me, I don't recall a story that uses them to tell this type of tale, and it's a really great tale.
A must watch if you like modern horror/thriller films.
Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor (1992)
Sleepaway Camp 4-REAL?!
Just a mashup of scenes from the first three movies with only less than 5% of original film (that includes the opening and credits scenes) and you can't even understand what's really happening. I know that they had budget problems and that they did it this way to finish it but they should have left it unfinished. This should not be consider a movie at all.
