Life in fading blue
5 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. This movie works in so many layers all at once that is takes a moment to really sink in.

It also took me the first few minutes to really dive into it, but OH once I did.. It's a movie about a father-daughter relationship or, more accurately, a moment in time in its course. A memory you can only access through a picture. The best (and in a way the last) summer of your childhood.

In many ways, their individual stories are mirrored. And, to that end, the use of reflection and blue are beautiful (that scene with the Polaroid just sent me.. is the entire movie in a nutshell!) Everything is very poetic and so well executed. Easily one of my favourite movies.

A feminist parody of mafia films
15 July 2023
If you're the kind of person who measures a comedy's humour by its amount of farts and punches, then this is NOT your cup of tea.

In short, the film might be presented as a feminist parody of mafia films. It strongly echoes "The Godfather", so if you've seen it you'll appreciate all the explicit and -even more- the implicit references.

Toni Collette is absolutely amazing, as always. As the lead, her unmatchable acting skills really carry the weight of the film. In addition, Monica Bellucci is just mesmerising.

The script is clever, the jokes are hallarious and, more over, it upholds an authentic feminist gaze.

Not a horror or thriller film
13 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In my opinion, the worst mistake this film makes is not being able to take on its own clichés. In fact, the only moments that feel truly genuine are Anthony Mackie's jokes, coming to terms with absurdity. Those glimpses of authenticity make me think it would have worked better as a pseudo-historical parody, though perhaps closer to Scary Movie than to a Tarantino one.

In doing so, it would have released some of the tension that comes with "heavy" (very real) topics, such as cancer and slavery (and which, frankly, it feels disrespectful if not portrayed properly).

This does not detract from the performances, which are very good.

Not a typical (horror) movie
13 January 2023
It's hard to talk about this movie without giving away any spoilers, because its narrative is shaped throughout the movie. Part of its charm is descovering, through character's development, what THIS is really about (existentional reference intended). And in those laberythic shifts explores several types of horror. But, to put it in a few words, its plod could be subtitled as 'a heteronormative nightmare'. Also 'not everyone's cup of tea' (so, perhaps not the film you'll enjoy with your friends at Saturday night). So here are 3 extra features: 1) Exquisite art, which seems to translate René Magritte's work into a descending-to-hell motion picture. 2) excellent acting and directing, as well as music and cinematography 3) A real food for thought.

A Hallmark movie with dinosaurs
14 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
For most of the film I felt like I was watching a Hallmark movie, with occasional dinosaurs scenes. Although the third edition of Jurassic World is flooded with references to the original franchise (almost parodying itself at one point), it was unable to grasp its true spirit.

There are some very enjoyable sequences, such as the double raptor chase throughout the city. I guess I was hoping to see more of that, as sequences like this are, arguably, the new saga's main original contribution.

However, they are overshadowed by endless cheesy dialogues. The first hour could -and perhaps should- be cut out of the movie. Not to mention Owen's laughable ability to MIND CONTOL the dinosaurs..

Next time (if there is a Jurassic Universe or something) less pointless dialogue and more well-directed dinosaurs scenes.

In the Fade (2017)

Strong movie, although a bit incohesive
7 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Inspired on real events, 'In the fade' bares the heart of one of the most pressing political issues of our time: the quiet-but-steady uprising of the far right.

The movie navigates through a wide and complex range of feelings experienced by the victim of a terrorists attack. Although the achievement of this portrayal is due more to Krueger's award-winning performance than to the screenplay itself.

The movie is set in three acts, each of which is well-executed in its own right. First, the attack and subsequent grieve (a drama). Second, the trial. Third, the revenge (a thriller). However, as each of them goes at its own pace, it might be a bit difficult to appreciate them as parts of a whole.

Nevertheless, it is a minor subjective observation to an otherwise strong film.

So accurate it's almost unbearable
28 November 2021
Through Oleg's experience the film portraits the vulnerable situation of most migrants. As it develops, and the boundaries between legal and unlegal get blurrier, we drown with Oleg in its desperate and helpless situation. This is achieved through a great and very accurate character's construction (as well as their performances). The symbolic narrative of the lamb is very well displayed, especially considering its centrality in Ghent's identity.

Plot holes EVERYWHERE
20 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The script has so many plot holes it's just dumb.

It's so obvious they even had to make it explicit (Really Thor, why not aiming for the head?) Why try to pull the gauntlet off instead of just cutting the damn arm while he was out? He can't even wear it on the other arm... Seriously, they should have invested a little bit more in the script and make it believable.

These people have never played video games
23 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
First of all I should say that Jumanji is one of my favourite movies from my childhood. Even so, I wasn't expecting this to be an exact copy of the original. I even liked it's promese of bringing Jumanji into a different, sort of digital, kind of game (although the vibe from a board game is hard to match).

But the movie's biggest flaw is perhaps not being able to make you feel and truly believe the characters are inside a game. Not even a videogame. They use some resources but, anyway, you never get that feeling, which was the hallmark of the original Jumanji.

On top of that, it has a predictable and overexplained script.

Cathartic; Tarantino vibes
1 May 2021
As a woman, I've experienced this movie as a truly cathartic experience. It exposes the chauvinism that all women have faced more than once in our lives, reacting as (also more than once) we would have liked to ; therefore the resemblance to Tarantino. Also, Mulligan's performance is superb. Although it can be very raw at times, it is a much-needed film.

Against all odds
24 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The whole story is set up to show how little chance a group of rebels had of stealing the Death Star plans. Even so, it indicates that the defining factors are not the chances we have, but the choices we make with them. It also implies the key relevance of being supported in those choices because, although there are main characters and leaders, the sense of community strength might be stronger than in other films in the franchise.

Spectacular scenery, lovable characters (new and old ones) and a tangled link to the main story. Arguably among the best in the Star Wars universe.

Couldn't tolerate it
8 April 2021
As a social scientist, I found this rather painful to watch. There is a total overlook of the social factors that influence the conditions under which creativity is produced. Like any skill, the ability to be creative must also be promoted. That is why biologistic explanations alone are insufficient.

Love is round
24 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Beautiful, sensitive, truly artistic movie. The way they use shapes and colour as elements of the story is mind-blowing. Of course, as the entire movie is based on dualities and polarities, those whom recognize themselves with the straight, sharp, unsensitive pole may not like it. Nevertheless, it represents accuratelly the colonial mindset and the oppositions on which it was based (civilization vs wilderness; hierarchies vs community, and so on). And this through scenes and frames that are just poetry. Truly a rare gem.

A traditional romcom. Except not.
13 September 2020
In its core, the storyline of this movie is not much different than the one of the same old romantic comedy. Boy meets girl, firsts kisses... I mean, the wedding theme is on the title! But this time they got it right. I find this to be an accurate representation of the dilemas that a young couple face, exposing all the ups and the downs as well. Also they've dodged most of the typical stereotypes that are often reproduced in this genre, giving yet another proof that humor doesn't have to be sexist to be funny. And, of course, Emily Blunt. Period.
