Creepy + Thought-Provoking
27 April 2024
INITIAL THOUGHTS: WHOA - this film is EERILY similar to the real-life Covid-19 outbreak. The flick proves to be a very factual + detailed thriller that will keep you glued to the screen.

THE BAD: On a macro-level the movie is undeniably entertaining... BUT there are some slow moments. With the luxury of the real life pandemic in the rearview, I can honestly say the movie might have played it too safe - they didn't quite risk enough with the plot.

BOTTOM LINE: Thought provoking and creepy movie. Matt Damon does a surprisingly good job at playing the "everyman" and being extremely relatable. Must-see for almost all audiences now that we've experienced a pandemic.

Story behind beautiful Napa
22 February 2024
INITIAL THOUGHTS: Northern CA wine-country is an eternally interesting and beautiful place. Alan Rickman steals the show in every scene he's in - he's hilarious and a very convincing sommelier.

THE BAD: Chris Pine's character is odd and the costumes seem out of place. He's also involved in a predictable love triangle - but it's still a serviceable job by Pine.

The movie has also been criticized considerably for straying from the real life story

BOTTOM LINE: The feel-good story based on real life events is truly inspiring. It really captures the human spirit of the story that ultimately was the rise of Napa Valley. It also makes wine seem artfully delicious and leaves you wanting to know more.

RAW
14 February 2024
INITIAL THOUGHTS: Unflinching + raw WW2 movie that humanizes the entire experience; all from the eyes of a tank squadron. This flick is raw - and the grim theme that eerily reminds us just how disposable humans truly are... will stick with you.

THE BAD: Very little... perhaps the sheer terror portrayed by the battle-hardened men in the way they interact with civilians. There is a theme here about war crimes but it doesn't go over-top.

BOTTOM LINE: Pitt and Lebeouf are at the top of their games here. Pitt's charisma makes him incredibly convincing as a sergeant. Epic + moving flick. Must see.

The deeper you go, the darker it gets!
26 January 2024
Movie: A naive FBI agent (Emily Blunt) is conned into volunteering for a Joint Task Force that is working at the Arizona-Mexico border against the Mexican Cartel. She quickly learns the force's tactics are unorthodox, illegal, and possibly even worse.

Opinion: PROS: Josh Brolin and Benecio Del Toro do an outstanding job as unflinching CIA men. The two men help paint a visceral picture of the unwinnable battle that often takes place on the border; and the toll it takes on those involved.

CONS: My chief complaint of this film is that in a quest to keep certain motives and characters mysterious - it leaves too many doors unopened. From the opening scene of the horror-house in AZ to the bitter end with Del Toro in Blunt's room.. It would have been a net-positive to elaborate more on the back story + future implications.

Bottom Line: This is a familiar plot but the non-stop pace and intelligent storytelling make this an unusually enjoyable movie. Emily Blunt plays the key character - you see things from her raw point of view. Excellent movie. 8/10.

Surprisingly fun casual watch.
21 November 2023
This flick will ultimately be remembered as a "you already know the ending type"... but it's FUN.

A young couple finds a beautiful house outside of town in the Bay area. Everything seems fine, except the previous owner is oddly attached to the home.

We've seen this story before but Meagan Good and Michael Ealy (the young couple) have some spunk and personality. They're likable characters. That being said, Dennis Quaid steals the show. He's a goofy old man one moment and then a methodical and evil criminal the next.

This isn't the movie to watch with your cinephile friends or one you want to pay too much attention to. That being said - it's got good scenery, fun characters, and proves to be an entertaining showdown between the creepy old man and the new homeowners. This one is worth a watch... even if it is just on in the background!

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
9/10
Tough, lengthy, gritty, cerebral... must-see film!
18 November 2023
Movie: Christopher Nolan delivers with his highly anticipated thriller-biopic about the Manhattan Project and World War 2. The film is primarily viewed through the first person lens of Robert J. Oppenheimer. This flick catches your attention by focusing on the moral dilemma that followed weaponizing atomic theory.

Opinion: The movie is exceptional from a cinematography standpoint and the all-star cast is a homerun. The flick ultimately tells a compelling story of a very complicated man and does a fantastic job of showing the oft-ignored long term repercussions of the terrifying decisions surrounding atomic energy. My chief complaint here is that the movie's runtime is so long and intricate - it is a bit self-defeating.

Final thoughts: The movie's topic is one of the most important of our time. Nolan does a masterful job in not passing judgment on Oppenheimer and focusing on the factual events. The movie wrestles with the paradox of human ethics, morals, and loyalty; and ultimately leaves the big decision of how to remember Oppenheimer's legacy - with YOU! This is a powerful film that stays with you. Put your thinking cap on - this is a must-see!

Unusual misstep for Scorsese
21 August 2023
The movie: This suspense-horror styled movie is truly an over-the-top sinister cat and mouse chase. The film centers around a mysterious felon (De Niro) who was recently released from a long prison stint. The felon seeks out revenge on his public defendant lawyer from 14 years ago; whom he believes buried key info that led to him being convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl.

Opinion: This movie should have been excellent by all accounts - Scorsese directing, De Niro acting as a vengeful criminal, and the veteran actor Nolte anchoring down the cast as the family man lawyer. Simply put, it isn't excellent. De Niro's character is vile, disturbing, and poorly acted. The action sequences are far too over-the-top and ultimately derail the plot.

Final Thoughts: Considering the critical acclaim and Oscar nominees, this movie is quite a disappointment. The acting seems forced from top-to-bottom and the key scenes are just too unpleasant to enjoy. The fast-paced tone gives you just enough to watch to the end.. but not much more.

The Lobster (2015)

Strange but relatable flick!!
17 August 2023
This deadpan comedy takes place in a dystopian future where the rules of dating have drastically changed. This film centers around romantically single adults who are staying at a hotel for 45 days. They must find a romantic partner within this time period or they will be cast out of society.

ABSURD!! That's the best word to describe this satirical film that pokes fun at the pressure society places on people to get into relationships. The film is surprisingly graphic at times and the plot runs a bit thin in the slow third-act. However, the way this flick examines modern human relationships - is emotionally moving.

Final Thoughts: Colin Farrell is as convincing an actor as you'll find and plays this strange role exceptionally well. The movie is slow and is best viewed as a black comedy with some drama intertwined; as opposed to the other way around. The ending is a bit of a let down but works well in this unique film.

Top notch tech-job, mediocre story.
7 January 2023
Avatar 2 is a tough one. On one hand, the visual effects in this movie are superb. From the Navi people, to the spectacular scenes filmed underwater, to the score -- this movie is a technical masterpiece. With that out of the way, the problems start trickling in.

On the other hand, there are a couple of things really keeping this movie in muddy waters. It's 3 hours & change which is a bizarre decision by Cameron when you consider the attention span of an average movie goer. The flick does an above average job with its character development but suffers from another mildly dull storyline; which could have been a lot better had it been trimmed shorter.

This installment in the Avatar series seems yet again like a played out story. With the effects in mind, this is a great choice for children and young parents. Whether or not it merits a watch for an adult.... is up in the air on this one.

Philisophical -- don't take time for granted!
9 December 2022
Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt have each made dozens of fantastic movies and this flick should be near the top on both of those lists.

This exquisite film is very very unique. Although the idea of "death knocking on the door" and end-of-life themes have been oft-explored, Meet Joe Black manages to blend humor, drama, and reflection in ways that few have done before.. or after.

This flick attempts to examine humanity as whole and weigh the good against the bad. It reminds us that life is both wonderful and complex -- and that you can't hang on!

PS: CON: The movie is extremely long at around 3 hours of run-time and it unfolds in a bit of a cliche fashion. Pro: Amazing cinematography!

Mildly entertaining suspense film
2 November 2022
A well done B-movie styled murder mystery that falls in the middle-of-the-pack when it comes to its genre.

The first 2 acts of this suspenseful murder mystery are smart. The 3rd and final act devolves itself with many of the classic pitfalls murder-mystery movies have.

Fun note: this might be the only movie Hemsworth has ever been in where he's arguably the worst character. On the flip side of the coin - Olyphant delivers in his role.

Give this flick a watch if you're in the mood for something light; it's still worth a view even after it's obnoxiously long build up to the ~surprising~ twist-ending.

Uber entertaining made-for-men war flick
23 July 2022
This is a lengthy film where almost no minutes are wasted. This star studded cast delivers with a sharp script, high intensity action, and surprisingly humorous attitude.

It's a quintessential "root for the bad-guys" movie that occasionally gets sidetracked with some extremely unrealistic sequences. Despite this, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more convincing performance than that of Lee Marvin as Major Reisman.

One of the best 20th century war flicks ever made. You'll be locked in the whole ride.

Classic 90's Western
6 June 2022
This modern day Western is stylish with it's female lead. The plot is mostly unpredictable despite playing up the traditional Western stereotypes; so much so that it works as an enjoyable black comedy.

This revisionist Western is endlessly inventive and quirky -- arguably to a fault.

Excellent Premise and Mediocre Delivery
12 May 2022
"Signs" is M. Night's second highest grossing film for a reason -- it is a tense movie from the opening credits until the final act!

This movie is a masterpiece considering how easily it blends Supernatural and personal demons. It works as an effective horror movie with some serious personal peril sprinkled in.

The film suffers from a trudging pace and tries too hard to incorporate religious elements into the already erratic plot. Bottom line; worth a watch!

Solid Campy Movie
16 March 2022
Campy / B movies have to do something right to make the leap from a trashy one-time-watch to a cult classic. Snakes on a Plane delivers -- it's actually pretty good.

If you're willing to watch it through a certain lens; with the knowledge that you're watching a truly satirical movie, it's very entertaining. Samuel L Jackson's charismatic performance is what makes this movie great.

The marketing behind this movie is truly unique in that it is exactly what it says it is and almost nothing else! Silly but fun watch!

Effortlessly Funny and Entertaining
2 March 2022
This is the first movie I've seen from the Bettinelli-Olpin / Gillett duo (directed the new Scream). My first impression is that they did a fantastic job with a relatively low budget.

This movie is simply a last-person-alive archetype movie about a girl who is set to marry into an uber-rich family. The only catch; she must play a game that has been in the family for centuries. The pacing is fantastic here as everything feels almost normal early on and slowly intensifies leading up to the "game".

This movie plays with emotions that almost everyone is familiar with -- feeling like an outsider. It draws from the movie "Get Out" in how it similarly examines perspectives from different social classes. Despite a somewhat kooky ending, I enjoyed this movie and found it entertaining.

Surprisingly Good & Beautiful
1 March 2022
Kenneth Branagh did a nice job with this sequel to Murder on the Orient Express -- it's better!

The film has a slow start that manages just enough drama to hold your attention but when the crew, including famed detective Hercule Poirot, set sail.. there is no looking back. Shockingly, a key character is quickly killed and mayhem ensues as the detective starts to uncover clues about the passenger that don't meet the naked eye.

This movie's pace and style are very classic and rustic, while it's cinematography is modern and sleek. The visually stunning backdrops of Northern Africa paired with the beautiful ship's crew -- on the outside at least -- make this a fun watch!

Thrillingly Unpleasant and Original
28 February 2022
Roth's best feature film to date delivers yet again for horror fans of this niche genre. You're unlikely to find another contemporary horror-thriller that can match the intensity and style of this flick.

This is one that you'll want to watch to the end. The movie starts off as 3 young men who are almost a caricature of privileged Western men embarking on a European backpacking Journey; who are much more concerned with booze, sex, and good times. The three of them slowly realize they are caught up in a sadistic operation that leaves you shaken to the core.

There's a comedic edge in this movie that helps it keep pace. Some are surely to disagree here but you have to at least hand it to Roth -- he dared to step out and get creative. The movie ultimately leaves you with a strong message; be careful what you wish for.

Proverbial Tale w/ Gruesome Undertone
27 February 2022
First of all, this movie isn't for everyone. If you enjoyed Hostel or dark films in general this is a great watch.

The premise is simple -- a beautiful and equally naive college freshman is convinced to go to the Amazon rainforest by an obnoxious group of activists on her campus. They successfully stage a planned protest over deforestation but the trip quickly takes a dark turn as they find themselves stranded with the local Amazonians.

The movie delivers its gory action in spectacular fashion. It also has a couple of unexpected character plot twists. The movie's primary knock is its slow start. There are also some oddly timed gag-humor moments. Ultimately, the ending is controversial but one that certainly draws a reaction. For those that can stomach the tough scenes; it's a must-watch.

Death Proof (2007)
8/10
Incredibly unique Tarantino film.
10 July 2021
Death Proof (2007)

In what has been dubbed "Tarantino's worst movie", it is truly a masterpiece for what it is. This movie is notable for the way it features a terrific dim-lit/monologue styled filming technique that pays homage to many chase movies of the 70s.

Death Proof follows two different sets of attractive women that are ultimately being stalked by a serial killing psychopath. The movie isn't as action-packed as many of QT's other films which has left fans divided. The movie instead relies heavily upon witty dialogue, incredible drive action sequences, and a dark twist.

The movie offers a unique outlook on feminism; the first group of girls control their environment with sex appeal while the second group is far more independant and ultimately give the serial killer more than he bargained for. Although the second sequence is a bit dialogue heavy, this movie is undoubtedly a great watch.

Argo (2012)

Honest review
6 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Title: Argo (2012)

With the recent tension between America and Iran, there has been renewed interest in this movie -- for a good reason. In a nutshell this is a real movie based off a fake movie that was used in a real life military operation to rescue American Hostages in 1979.

The first 15 minutes of this film is electrifying and the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat for the whole ride. With few options in an exceptionally trying situation, CIA agent Tony Mendez proposed a dangerous plan; create a fake Canadian film project and hope the confusion ultimately masks the identity of the 6 American hostages in an effort to bring them back to their homeland. The acting and flow of the movie is extraordinary as it shows how truly terrifying and bizzare of a situation it really was.

The only complaint I have about the entire movie is the airport scene. I have a hard time believing that Military/airport security officers would fall for such a measly plan; to distract them with fake storyboards from a fake movie. As much as I love movies, I'm not sure military officers in a hostile situation would feel the same way.

The Irishman (2019)
8/10
In depth review -- spoilers
24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Title: The Irishman (2019)

Scorsese's return to Mafialand, is an ultimate slow burn that lasts around 3.5 hours. Scorsese finds himself in familiar territory in this organized crime flick that is led by a hall of fame cast: De Niro, Pesci, and Pacino. This masterpiece of a movie has a very interesting take on the Jimmy Hoffa story -- which is just one of several theories of what might have happened in the real life events of the late 70s/early 80s.

The movie is seen from Frank Sheeran's eyes, a truck driver who got involved with Russell Bufalino and the midwestern organized crime outfit. Sheeran ultimately proves to be a rising star in the crime family and somewhat surprisingly finds his way to the top as the family's top hit man. The narration of this story is particularly interesting when you consider the fact that the latter half of the movie is about Sheeran himself recalling events that allude to his possible involvement with the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa, who was widely considered Sheeran's best friend at one time.

The Special effects in this movie were phenomenal. The de-aging technology paired with the strong acting from this timeless trio is amazing to see. While it is a bit uncanny to see fresh faces on these three men now in their 70s, the battle had just begun for the producers. They were faced with making the three men look 20-30 years younger in the majority of the movie and then allowing some of their advanced age to show as the scenes cut back to "present day". All in all, these effects were a nice modern touch on an old-school masterpiece.

I think the only bad thing I can say about this movie is that compared to its predecessor Goodfellas, the crime itself (which is largely true) is just not as interesting. Despite a bunch of small crimes and one-off hit scenes the macro story focuses on stealing steaks. They do a good job of building off of it but steaks aren't as inherently fun as casinos and inside mob stories. All things considered, this is a fantastic movie that can't help but seem like a goodbye from 3 of the greatest actors in Mob movie history. Grade A-

Extremely unique & entertaining
23 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
**Best movie of the summer**

Title: Once upon a time in Hollywood (2019)

Quentin Tarantino really stepped out of his comfort zone to deliver a film with less glam than usual. This movie pays homage to 1960's Hollywood known as the Golden era. It's essentially a story of a washed up actor, staring down the barrel at middle age, trying to keep up with the changing times in Hollywood and in pop culture. Dicaprio and Pitt are proving to be ageless wonders, as they both did outstanding jobs at playing less familiar roles. The movie has a unique spin on the Sharon Tate saga that ultimately proved to be a defining moment in the decade. The ending of the movie is surprisingly bloody but delivers an unforgettable sequence; this time ending in the way everyone wishes it would have the first go around. The only downside to this movie is that between the story of the aging Rick Dalton and the cut scenes to the Sharon Tate build up, this movie is essentially a movie without a plot. However, the way Tarantino was able to intertwine historical moments (some haunted by the ghosts of real life events) with movie lore, makes for ultra-entertaining flick that is different from most movies you see in today's age. Although the movie was met with mixed critic reviews and was certainly an experiment for Tarantino... I think it was the best movie of the summer and is worth the watch for most crowds.

12 Angry Men (1957)
9/10
Excellent movie that still holds up 60 years later
8 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
12 Angry Men is essentially a wordy film that epitomizes civic duty. Director Sidney Lumet does a phenomenal job at taking a script with 12 average looking men that hardly ever leave one room and creating a startlingly moving picture. The movie is shot entirely in black and white, which in my opinion, plays a positive role in highlighting the amazing dialogue.

Henry Fonda leads a troupe of men serving their jury duty down a truly thought provoking rabbit-hole that ultimately tries to determine if the young man on trial is guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt". The intense dialogue in the movie brings to light an often forgotten subject that is just as prevalent in real life as in the movie - the art of arguing.

My only knock on the movie is the slight far-fetched detective skills of Fonda himself. His Sherlock Holmes' like nose for detail is the only way to make the movie work but I must say that he points out/recalls some flat out miraculous details hours after a brief hearing.

The bottom line is that despite this movie's age, it still provides a relevant perspective of the American jury system - and many of its flaws.

Joker (I) (2019)
6/10
Mediocre high budget movie.
22 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those movies that uses top of the line production and a sky-high budget to mask an average-at-best storyline. Now before I say any more, Joaquin Phoenix did a phenomenal job here and absolutely destroyed the role of the joker. But that is where the problems began -- the role of the joker. Most people know that this movie is the prelude to the modern joker (Suicide Squad, Dark Knight, etc..) but the delivery of the storyline starts to drag out about halfway through the movie. The movie is a true slow burn that sort of glosses over a major storyline of Thomas Wayne; the joker and batman are seemingly half-brothers now. This was a half-baked attempt to leave the franchise wide open. All in all, the Joker's disturbing personality and the mental health implications make this movie worth seeing. But with all the hype surrounding the movie, I was mildly dissapointed.
