We've all seen it before
18 August 2019
If this was the very first biopic of an astronaut maybe the eccentricities this displays might be exciting or unusual, but there have been so many before that this story line leaves little to get excited about.

The plot drags badly, the character of the small community of astronaut and their families are all so cliche, I'm not claiming it is untrue, just cliche. They desperately need some new angle, some reason to watch this story line.

Add to it all I lived through that entire period of time, I was excited when it actually happened but I have no more excitement saved up to go through it all over again.

Nothing remarkable or bad about the acting or the production values but I want to see something special and this just was not it. I gave it a 5 out of charity for loyalty to the American space program in which I worked as s technician.

Faith in what?
17 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
To begin with we must acknowledge that both the writer (Carl Sagan) and the star (Jody Foster) are well known atheists. Secondly, I believe their agenda is to attempt to explore the idea of faith. Thirdly this plot and the questions it asks uses cliche image and plot points used in many other places.

Palmer Joss and Dr Arraway's discussion in Washington DC is one critical plot point worth mentioning. When Arraway and Joss discuss the existence of God. Arraway suggests that God cannot be proven and Joss comes back and demands she prove she loves her father, but never gets the chance to do it due to being taken away with some new issue. Leaving any argument she might offer unsaid.

And in the end when confronting the senate investigating committee, Arraway is essentially forced to admit she only has her own private experience and nothing else as proof of her 18 hour long experience.

The word "faith" never appears in the dialogue, but it is in fact a central theme of this movie. Joss's Christian faith and Arraway's faith in science which is severely shaken by the final scene. The audience left to decide for themselves just what we should place our faith in.

I highly recommend this film even for reviewing again and again it holds up under multiple viewings.

This is not at all like the book
5 November 2018
Unlike the book which Gore Vidal was awarded for writing, this film is the victim of rules about copyrights and a vicious anti- Hollywood bias. Whereas the book was a commentary of the male ego presented in and developed by the films of the 40's and 50's. Virtually none of that theme is present in the film, it is so chopped up and dissected that what we do see is hardy worth the cost of the film stock used.

It is filled with actors, good actors, but put into impossible situations and chaotic directions. If this remotely sounds interesting READ THE BOOK forget the movie.

Wonderful new show
12 July 2018
The main character Mara, a former hostage negotiator, takes people out of the dream like settings of their computer simulations they get trapped in. This is a densely psychological thriller, with surprising implications. While there is little physical action, the psychological and mental anguish is compelling. There usually is a motivation in the real world that pushes what action there is.

Warning: there is a hook, still undiscovered, something in Mara's background which will eventually lead to her own personal issues coming out. So far only hints of it and probably related to her history in police work.

This could turn into some rather mushy gooey mess if it wasn't being rooted in proper and carefully constructed mental imagery. This is a gem of a show and I hope it lasts a long time.

Still great after all these years
31 May 2018
This is definitely not for people who are Trump supporters. Any character who rejects gold and seeks no control or power over others is just the spiritual sort who puts the Kibosh on everything Trump.

More over the spiritual values demonstrated in this series show the emptiness of the Evangelicals, and the NRA.

All the previous reviews are all agreed and I need to add nothing. The only lasting question for me is how is it possible that Bruce Lee would improve this. Lee would need to be a far better actor than I think of him to pull this off and offer the same quality experience. Having the Kung Fu sections be "more precise" would simply not add anything, since only an expert like Lee would even notice.

Full of cliche's
8 March 2018
If you don't like to think, or really like clichés then this is the movie for you. Hardly an original thought in the entire plot. In my case I spent the time figuring out where I first saw each cliché, they range from the 60's clear through the 90's. I could see the ending come from the end of the first hour yes it was that obvious.

In my case I had lots of free time and the movie cost me nothing so I guess it was worth the price.

Another venue for Meryl Streep's great acting
14 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
With all the action centered on the process of obtaining and printing the Pentagon Papers, we find scion of the .01% rich (Streep's character) struggling to find direction after her father and husband both leave her in charge of a major newspaper. We all know from history what the outcome of the political battle will be, but the conflict she faces when people she has personal relationships with (like Robert McNamara) are the very ones who will be damaged by printing the "papers." Will she ever be able to enjoy those relationships ever again? Clearly that life she lived is over now. If anything this movie offers us sympathy for this ultra rich publisher.

Prescient for today in 2018 as it was in the 1970's
2 January 2018
I write this review upon watching a "revisited" broadcast of this film Jan 2, 2018. I see Nixon and Trump walking in lockstep down the same hallway. The lies, the paranoia, and the attempts to stop investigations.

The main difference is that Nixon had a far more credible reputation than Trump has, and many more people believed Nixon than ever believed Trump. And since social media has come into being long after Nixon, Trump is able to manipulate public opinion far better than Nixon could.

As far as the film is concerned it was good to involve Woodward and Bernstein for this documentary and it amazed me that such a detective story could be so powerful a statement.

Is this a Christmas movie or what?
5 December 2017
Oh I forgot, the Olaf mini movie was the Christmas movie this one was completely at the wrong time of year.

So I will review it as though it was at the right time of the year and just get on with it.

The visuals were outstanding, easily Oscar level. (But then again that is why we are seeing it in December.) The plot was a tear jerker and very successful at it too. Follow your heart is always a good reason for tear jerking.

Having grown up in the Southwest I have been familiar with the Dia del la Muertas for ages, the visuals on the masks was well known and expected. I do have an issue with this as a holiday worth celebrating, it is a pagan feast day.

So I was torn between taking the movie at face value and giving it a 10 or making complaints about it being anti Christian. I took the easy path and gave it the 10. Whatever it was about it was good at.

Freud could have written this
26 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is so full of phobia material and fear mongering for very young kids that it should be rated M. Granted the two main factions of plot action BABYCO and PUPPY CO were hardly very creative, but the action was filled with the most horribly subconsciously active fear generation for the younger kids.

The single worst case was an undisputed claim that the first born loses the parent's love when a new born comes into a house. From the view point of a 7 year old this could be devastatingly real but it is rarely true. This movie does not even bother to offer a counter argument! Secondly, fear of babysitters. Not only does this movie encourage that fear by creating a scenario where it comes true but enhances it through the scene by having their phony baby sitter be a cruel MAN dressed as a woman.

Yes in fact I do realize this is a fantasy, but its more like it comes from the horror genre of Hansel and Gretel.

As a fantasy for adults this is maybe OK but please keep the kids away if they're below 10.

Brilliant detective work
9 August 2017
The FBI uses profilers to figure out who their cold case perpetrators are and in this drama our hero develops a whole new form of Forensic linguistics to develop his profile. In the process he is up against the entire FBI bureaucracy who is mired in the old ways and who reject Fitz's new techniques. Even with all that without the brother turning him in there still might not be an end to this case.

The battle of wits between Fitz and the unabomber during their interviews is almost worth the entire series. The unabomber has many ideas that will fit well for many potential jury members and so the FBI wants a confession and not merely going to court with their mountain of evidence.

The ideas presented in this series about linguistics are interesting of themselves, the concepts of just what is meant by freedom for instance resonated with so many people.

I give this a big thumbs up!

Rushed sequel dellivers us up for third in series
4 July 2016
I will have to admit that I am not one of those critics who examine every last frame of a movie, I prefer the larger scope of things. This movie was rushed badly, with almost no time to enjoy a scene before the next one comes up. This seems to be one of the subtler reasons why so many critics here don't like it much.

I found the idea that Will Smith could possibly be missed very strange when his picture is in nearly every other scene.

This movie also suffers from sequelitis. Slipshod efforts in so many scenes. This movie could not stand up on its own which is the sterling standard for sequels. If anyone out there cant figure out there is a possible third movie, they need to re read their "movie class 101".

I tend toward forgiveness for much of this movies misses. For me it was OK just not up to its previous film original.

Revengeful engineer manipulates naive scientist
10 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Unlike some others here I see an incredibly rich and powerful engineer who has designed huge government projects in the past wants one last bit to screw with the entire earth rather than merely the USA.

He selects his patsy early in her life and works his will to so totally to do his will without her even recognizing he is pulling all the strings. His plot is briefly ended when the government funding is removed and takes awhile before he can manage to get her back on track. But Hadden uses his powerful organization to manipulate Dr Arroway into finding his signal supposedly from the star Vega this signal just happens to be almost exactly what would be expected from some off world intelligence.

When the code he makes up becomes bogged down in translation he provides the clue for its decoding and the government is off to the races. Seems it is the plans for some mysterious machine that ends up costing 1/2 Trillion dollars. But its not just that, seems that most of the money spent goes to subcontractors or wholly owned subsidiaries of Hadden enterprises. Mind you he is dying of some cancer and this is his way to get back at all human society.

There is never going to be anyone but Arroway in the machine (his patsy) and when someone else is selected Hadden manages to get the first machine destroyed and Dr. Arroway goes to the systems test site in Japan with one more Hadden industry subcontractor which has another complete machine ready to go. Hadden doesn't want anyone to realize this machine is bogus yet.

This movie is really about Hadden and not Dr. Arroway and written well enough that it is hard to figure it out. Some people might even reject this theory but it is plain as day if you watch carefully.

Best product per cost ratio ever
24 March 2016
We've all seen indie films shot on a meager budget, or even complete failures due to an inadequate budget, but this film got the greatest possible bang for every buck of budget I can imagine.

Plot and character melded well and if you don't ask too many questions, it holds together for a great ride. Yes in fact there are no questions and answers about Time travel so to speak, much less frequently asked questions.

Chris O'Dowd, Marc Wootton, Dean Lennox Kelly all worked the action well and Anna Faris and Meredith MacNeil kept the mood light and the plot roiling This is definitely a keeper

Better Call Saul (2015–2022)

Its waiting for the second shoe to fall
5 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Since we are in the second season, its apparent that this series will endure. There is a feeling of inevitability in that we all know Jimmy will find his way into becoming Saul and the twists and turns that lead to that revelation do seem to come rather slowly.

But this is a character driven show, not an action adventure so any criticism based upon its slowness betray a lack of understanding. Character requires relationships and there are some rather well layered ones in this universe of BCS. In fact one can learn about human nature by watching this show since it is so well written.

The inevitability of the end is somewhat of a downer though. Vince Gilligan has already given up a vision of Jimmy's future as the manager of a Cinnabon store. So we all wait for the second shoe to fall and Jimmy signs off to become Saul. Its like rooting for the bomb to win as it is dropped.

Who are you?
5 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Well this is the third Panda movie where this central question leads to the climax. While this may seem rather repetitious, it bears repeating. Can the viewers actually take this message to heart and apply it to their own lives, we'll see wont we.

Focusing on "who we are" is profoundly important and like an onion each of us has multiple layers so does Po the Panda. While it does include kicking a$$ and stopping bad guys, there are other dimensions which go beyond that, like allowing others to be who they are too.

Jack Black and crew do the same great job as the other two movies. Having this be an animated movie allows it to get beyond the natural physical aspects of the story line into the spirit realms.

Look for Oscars
17 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I feel sandbagged after watching this movie I went and looked up the main character since it was based upon a true story. We first meet Jim Dononvan working an insurance case, but I would have to ask why in the world is this man arguing an insurance case? Certainly I would also question why this man was chosen for the main action of the plot. There is where an opening up of his background would explain it all simply but we don't get it except a single throw away line.

Donovan worked on the Nuremberg trials as a prosecutor, he also was general counsel to the OSS, the predecessor to the CIA. He had extensive experience with handling secrets and dealing with spies and likely knew more than a smattering of German. Not the plain Jane insurance lawyer the movie offers for him. Choosing him for the action in this plot now seems perfectly natural.

However not knowing all of that information means we see the action in quite a different light. So which individual do we cheer for? The plain Jane insurance lawyer or the high powered spy master and Nuremberg prosecutor? Should I blame myself for not knowing ahead of time? Anyone who reads this prior to watching the movie will not see the same movie I saw since I didn't have this information ahead of time. Given the people associated with this movie how can it possibly not be nominated for multiple Oscars. It is a good quality movie though and in this year of so-so movies it could easily make the grade for an Oscar.

Is this just another argument for having humans in space?
4 October 2015
Yes of course it is. Frankly I do support that goal. So who is it that fights against that? The bureaucrats of course. This was filled with evil bureaucrats making obviously wrong headed decisions just so the "space cowboys" could defy them.

This movie is filled with hackneyed and cliché characters, and anyone who was not blind could see the ending long ahead of time. No, I did not even read the book.

By any standard the cinematography was good, and the Martian set pieces looked too, not especially great mind you but at least good enough. Watching this film in 3D did absolutely nothing for me at all, I recommend saving the extra $3 and seeing it without the special glasses.

My suggestion is to wait until this reaches the discount theaters and see it there.

Is this a war or politics
21 September 2015
As we learn going along that the anti-hero Kurtz knew what the Vietnamese war was really about and chose to position himself where he could force change. By the time Kurtz is given his new command he knew all about the lies and political compromise of the American generals and especially the politicians who "ran" the war.

Time after time Kurtz's successful actions embarrassed the powers that be, so eventually he just went off into his own little world and made war the best he could and he was just a little too good.

So along comes Capt Willard, ready and eager to get back into the fray. But upon reading Kurtz file, he comes to admire him, to understand him. Still his own mission must be fulfilled, what to do? Notice at the end Willard taking Kurtz's notes and other papers with him as leaves. He knows just how important they are.

Unlike many here who claim this movie is NOT about war, well I disagree. It is about the hypocrisy of war, and most specifically how the American politicians and generals fought that war in the public square unable or unwilling to prosecute the war as "just war." Sadly the US has yet to learn that lesson.

Amadeus (1984)
The politics of Music circa 1760
7 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Everyone else quite rightly focuses on the music and there is no doubt it is great. Neville Mariner and his orchestra are the epitome of Mozart experts.

But I would open the discussion up and ask viewers to see something else here. The politics of Music. Salieri passes through his active phase as composer and has moved into the realm of politics. There is no doubt Salieri is an expert in that field, sensitive to the political motives of his financial supporter, and able to conflate the issues of German or Italian language for the first Mozart opera in Vienna. Able to manipulate the levers of power within the court to get whatever he wants. A simple word from him can cut the run of Mozart's opera down to the bare essentials.

But politics never satisfies Salieri, he has made his choice and cannot live with it any more. By the time Mozart shows up his skill as musician has faded and all he is left with are clunky, and mediocre products. But this movie simply leaves most of the music Salieri has already done in the past never to be brought up again, there must have been some significant quality that brought him up to the level of Maestro, to the respect of the power elite. You simply do not become court composer with mediocrity.

The character of Mozart that Salieri hates most is his naiveté, a sort of innocence. As a wielder of power there in Vienna, Salieri chooses to use it to kill off this wild child, to destroy the innocent since he is stuck living the life of cynicism and political correctness. His desire is to take credit for the final mass so as to revive his career as musician, since it will be written in his own hand writing and not Mozart's.
