A Nostalgic take on adolescence brought together as a beautifully thoughtful film with subtle yet beautiful animation that really keeps you engaged.
The Hunter (2011)
The Hunter
While nothing about this film is technically off the main fault is the actual story and it's writing.
Höstsonaten (1978)
Autumn Sonata
Ingrid Bergman gives one of the best performances ever seen in this haunting and beautifully written tale of a Mother and her Daughter.
Triangle (2009)
Triangle
Shotty editing and an unsatisfying conclusion make what could have been an original suspense horror a repetitive bore fest.
The Jungle Book (2016)
Visually stunning and with some of the best voice acting of all time
Jon Favreau's 'The Jungle Book' is a live adaption of the 1967 animated film. While it is said to be live action 95% of the film is CGI with Mowgli being the only sizable live action part of the film. However don't let this sway you as the animation in this film is some of the best I've ever seen. When I was watching this at the theater I was wondering whether a few of the scenes were CGI but I still thought the majority of it was real due to how beautifully made these jungle backgrounds were created. In particular a very small and uneventful part of the film that showcases the films animation talents was a part in the film where Mowgli uses a sharp rock to cut down a vine. This doesn't sound like much however the way that the animators showed this absolutely blew me away. If you were to look at this film without knowing it was CGI there is a high chance you will think besides the animals the whole film is in Live action.
So far not many films have managed to animate life like talking animals due to them looking corny and unnatural. However the way that the animals mouths moved was done perfectly and I would say the best that I've ever seen in any film. The voice acting that matched these mouths however was absolutely outstanding. Bill Murrays performance as Baloo would be up there with Robin Williams role of the genie from Aladdin as his voice fit the character so well. The casting director of this film deserves the biggest pat on the back as not one of the characters were voiced poorly.
Despite having so many great things about this film there was one thing that I didn't like. The main thing for me was the music. The original jungle book film is famous for its songs and is one of the main reasons everyone loves it so much. In this film I feel like they only put the songs that they put in for nostalgia. There were only two songs during the film and they felt very out of place as they didn't have that groove that the original jungle book had. I think that Favreau should have chosen to either go full on with the songs and included more songs and put more effort into them or had no songs at all. Another thing about this film that isn't necessarily a bad thing but kept me away from the actual movie was King Louie. I can't quite decide whether I liked him or not. The main thing that made me doubt his character in this film was his size. I can understand him being a little bigger than the average orangutan but he quite ridiculous in this. He's over double the size of Baloo and it makes the film seem less real which is what makes the film so unique and special. However despite the size of King Louis I think that the scene that he was in was one of the best in the whole film and Christopher Walkens voice acting was amazing.
Overall I think this is without a doubt one of the best movies of the year so far and is a huge landmark for Disney and cinema in general and feel like this movie will be one that people will be talking about for a long time.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
A great film for all ages especially for those who love the originals.
The original Star Wars trilogy had not been given a worthy follower due to George Lucas's Star Wars prequels failure to please audiences and a general failure for such a hyped and anticipated series of movies. The Force Awakens was given even more hype then the prequels and had great expectations to live up to because of th success of the originals and having to redeem the Star Wars franchise for the prequels.
I can say after seeing this film that it is no perfect movie, as no movie ever is, but boy does it live up to its expectations in such a huge way. J.J Abrams took the material he was given and absolutely nailed this film. The way he brought back the humour and adventure from the originals that the prequels lacked gave the audience one of the decades most exiting movies yet. Not only was the Humour and Adventure great in this film but the chemistry between Jon Boyagas Finn and Daisy Ridleys Rey was absolute eye candy following the wooden love story of Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portmans Anakin and Padme in the prequels. The two new characters were heavily criticized before the film but I believe they blew away all expectations as both characters felt right to be in a Star Wars film. The rest of the new introduced characters were also great inclusions in the film with characters like Kylo Ren, Poe Dameron and BB 8.
Despite all the great things about this film there are always going to be a few negatives to go with the huge amount of positives. My main issue with this film is it seems to much like the Original Star Wars movie. Some people would say that this is good and have this as a positive however I think that it takes points away from it solely on the film loosing a bit of originality. Also the new 'star base' is basically a new Death Star and after having two already I think that J.J could have thought of something new instead of bringing back a third Death Star.
All in all Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a great film and piece of storytelling and is going to be remembered as one of the good Star Wars films as it truly is a 'good' Star Wars film. What the film lacks in originality it makes up for in its action sequences, Characters and overall experience. I recommend this film to anyone and everyone and hope that everyone enjoys this film as much as I did.
