After recently enjoying more than my fair share of Anne Hathaway led rom-coms, I was eager to check out her newest film, The Idea of You. Based on the Robinne Lee novel of the same name, the movie features 40-year-old Solène (Hathaway) stumbling into a relationship with 24-year-old pop star Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine). Attempting to balance society's judgment alongside the pseudo-celebrity lifestyle, the love story traverses such a romance's many peaks and valleys.
While the basis stands out amongst a genre of clones, the film fails to break any boundaries or do anything original with its premise. Although this is a common complaint within the genre, The Idea of You is noticeably guilty, as it heavily suffers from its predictability. The film is littered with cliche dialogue and story beats, to the point where you can say the lines before the actors do. With few redeeming qualities, The Idea of You will likely be forgotten mere moments are turning it off.
Shockingly, Anne Hathaway is one of the worst parts of the movie. Though I have always adored her previous projects, her role in The Idea of You feels as though she is phoning it in, or simply uninterested in her character. Her performance radiates an aura of boredom and resembles acting found in a cheap Netflix original movie. Additionally, she hardly bothers to change her stoic facial expression, as if she had been recorded during her initial script reading. For being capable of such a high caliber of acting, Hathaway unfortunately drags the film down further than the rest of its forgettable cast.
The Idea of You is a cheap streaming original movie that puts in the lowest effort. The story slowly repeats an overdone formula, culminating in a laughably lackluster experience. Assembling one of the most unoriginal rom-coms, the writers and actors put minimal effort into creating anything special. The Idea of You will forever remain a blemish on Anne Hathaway's mostly jovial career.
