Infinity Pool (2023)
Another tropical paradise turns horror show movie? Yes and no
20 February 2023
Lots of reviewers seem to be jaded in that this movie requires several viewings to fully grasp the evolution of the central character as his psyche is subject to sustained attack.

It isn't a shallow movie about gore and thrill kills. It's a psychological thriller that questions humanity, human nature and desire. Western classism also plays a role for additional layer of subtext.

Further viewings can allow us to dissect different characters and explore the many meandering archetypes.

Graphic gore is pretty common in modern movies, but from a psychological standpoint, it serves the purpose of jolting the viewer into the moment.

Another (2014)
Unexpected Treat in Lynchian vein
4 July 2022
Despite the various flaws associated with a modest budget, there is much to like about this movie

Engrossing performance by the lead Paulie Rojas, visual styles that play with various media and harkens back to the 1970s era of gothic erotic horror, and a half decent score puts this film in potential cult classic territory.

Pig (I) (2021)
A metaphor for Job?
11 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Where one could see the character's journey as one seeking closure after tragedy, with pig being some connection to his humanity after being so brutally beaten down, the true journey was him turning his head, at the end, to God.

Whether one is able to still trust in God's overall plan for us after tragedy after tragedy is the message contained in the Book of Job.

The movie "Rover" with Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson also has a similar theme.

Midsommar (2019)
Slow pace establishes the perfect ending
22 April 2020
Part psychological horror, the subtheme of Midsommar is about roots and finding one's place. A metaphor for how our destinies play out when conflicting forces are at play. Dani feels her abandonment by her family as so devastating that she falls prey to the cult. In her eyes, things were both in and outside her control. But to the viewer, we see someone almost willingly walking towards a conclusion.

The soundtrack is mesmerizing, and the slow pacing creates a brooding suspense

Overall, a horror movie that deserves cult status

The Irishman (2019)
Woke DeNiro ruined this movie
21 December 2019
Technically supreme, but the deranged rantings of DeNiro against President Trump over the past three+ years has eliminated my ability to see him as an artist. He's an obnoxious, lie-riddled Soros activist/

Good job, Bobby

True Detective (2014– )
Technically superb but lacking 'closure'
15 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps that's the intent of the writers and producers - to make one think about repeated patterns of behavior, regret and desire for closure. We sense the frustration in every episode at having the mystery just outside their grasp.

The ending took a bizarre turn from previous seasons showing evil predators into the villain being a grief-stricken woman mourning over the loss of her daughter. This grief led to numerous murders, yet the ending seems to expect us to forgive or explain away this. BUT, how does an underground living area behind a massive safe vault door induce any sympathy in us? Are we to assume the victim only lived in that dolled-up prison when necessary?

The real victim, apart from the brother and sister of course, is the father. The mother is a monster as well - chose drugs and easy money over responsibility, as though selling off a child to wealthy murdering psychopaths is the right thing to do.

Final note, the last scene of the season has main character in a Vietnam flashback looking back at the viewer . My guess at the meaning of this is some type of time loop, Buddhist cycles message. That Vietnam is linked to the current case?

Oozes woke
3 August 2019
One just gets the sense that this movie took a subtle yet noticeable shift away from what captured many people's hearts in the earlier MCU movies.

The actors give off the feeling of being forced to portray a role that used to be natural fits in order to impose various woke messages. There are so many but they come at a rate of every couple of minutes, ranging from blatant grrl power, to emasculation and so on. Muddling along.

Aside from the odd action scenes, this movie could pass as a drama.

Empire (2015–2020)
Smollett effect
28 March 2019
Willing to give every show a fair shake and don't wish to speak ill of the show's achievements to date.

However, at present there is a cast member who could potentially be allowed to stay on;l a cast member that willingly and knowingly attempted to stir up racial violence via fake hate hoax, simply to fuel his communist degenerate narcissism.

This review should serve as a warning to Empire's producers - do the right thing.

Peels the layer off a difficult subject
2 February 2019
Similar movie: Gummo. Highly recommended.

Divorce and family breakdown is a significant issue facing many today, yet a certain narrative has dominated how it is treated. Any movie that tackles broken homes deserves merit. As a male who at seventeen saw his parents divorce in the first wave (mid-80s) and seeing it spread and poison, my attitude has long shifted away from the standard narrative of the deadbeat dad loser. Nothing could be further from the truth and what divorce does is make the child eventually turn his sights on what societal forces enable and encourage such a destructive event.

Every viewpoint has to be considered.

The Meg (2018)
You'll end up cheering for the shark.
18 September 2018
The CGI and action sequences are worth the three. Give those teams credit.

But the cast was predictably diverse, with added annoying grrlpower (read: judging and condescending of the male lead), stilted acting, the cocky but stupid military. And the tattooed lesbian ranked high for cringe.

Maybe there's some message in there about leaving well enough alone in scientific exploration but I didn't care. Immigration metaphor? Who knows when China is obviously funding this project.

Keeps you engaged

Warning: Spoilers
I'll start off by stating the excellent production from the first Sicario was continued in the sequel - writing, acting, cinematography, music etc. No complaints.

Now I will give my comments on the overall writing. We had the first movie give us a hint that there is a broad scope in what the special ops has to deal with, and this carries on in the second, with a twist. We find out a jihadi attack possibly involved jihadis smuggled through the US-Mexico border, so the US government goes black ops to start a war between the cartels by kidnapping 'a prince' (which turns out to be a princess because 'reasons'), thus creating so much chaos and division that the US can make the area more amenable to its manipulations.

However, further analysis of the jihadi identities reveals that they are US citizens, and the black ops kidnapping of the princess has to be called off (because, and I'm paraphrasing the govt-black ops liaison: 'there's 40 million Americans who have relatives in Mexico and the optics aren't acceptable). So the rest of the film deals with the fallout from this decision, resulting in an amazing cliffhanger ending that makes the viewer quite excited for the third installment).

I know, somewhat confusing. An enjoyable movie, nonetheless, but I really hope the third Sicario doesn't go soft in how it addresses jihadi terror cells in the west, ethnic voting blocks tying the military's hands etc. I was actually hoping that this second installment would present a more blunt display on how the government and military can put aside the opinion polls and other opportunistic political shills in dealing with threats like suicide bombing in shopping centers (to name but one example). And, human smuggling in order to undermine the United States cannot be ignored either.

Hereditary (2018)
Brilliantly disturbing
13 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Well-paced, with a buildup to a chilling conclusion. Small clues as to the final plan of the cult are thrown throughout and leave the viewer only partially able to grasp the scope of the plan. The viewer is also startled through the insertion of horror elements when least expected (for me, it was the cultists outside the home in the final act standing silently).

I recently read Ramsay Campbell's "The Parasite" and it has similar themes.

Casting is superb. The music, locations (a vague, generic layout which implies that this plot could be anyone's neighborhood) and acting are all excellent. Toni Collette, especially when she flips between moods show an incredible range and dedication to the role.

Blatant Oscar pandering

Boring, stale tropes of the evil corporations/military oppressors over the misunderstood and gentle working class.

Classic cultural marxist drivel.

Dark Crimes (2016)
A gripping story done well
22 May 2018
Jim Carrey surprises with a solid performance as a jaded detective trying to unravel a death surrounding white female sex slave rings. The story brings the viewer deeper into the psychological harm that the characters have had to endure. The final scene unfolds and reveals that there is more to the case than one first imagines.

Solid supporting cast, excellent camerawork and music, and the general mood of despair is presented quite well.

The Cured (2017)
All-around well-crafted movie
18 May 2018
I won't get into the allegorical aspects of how this movie ties zombies into the overall social aspect of, say, immigration or Northern Ireland.

This review is simply to recommend this movie as one that covers all its basis quite well. Acting is spot-on, good pacing, soundtrack isn't overwhelming or distracting.

For zombie fans, The Cured does advance this genre in how it looks at the horror from a different angle - that of the infected's perspective.

Game Night (I) (2018)
Outstanding. You think you're getting plain, and the quirkiness is everywhere!
16 May 2018
Whoever was involved in putting in those little extra cuts that take a funny scene into just plain wackiness deserves major accolades.

They were throughout the movie and elevated Game Night into a classic. Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams had excellent chemistry, as well as a fantastic supporting cast. Highly recommend.

No, not paid to write this review. I actually really loved it!

Bravery in taking on pedophile rings should be applauded
11 April 2018
Not as disturbing as season one of True Detective, but this film does manage to bring the viewer in on a very disturbing subject - kidnapping and slavery of young girls to be used as sex toys of the wealthy and connected. A good accompanying soundtrack and score, simple settings and plotline also keep the viewer focused on the main character's descent into this deeper 'subculture' and subsequent redemption.

Annihilation (I) (2018)
Fans of H.P. Lovecraft may enjoy
12 March 2018
HPL's story "The Color out of Space" was, I am guessing, one of the inspirations for this story ("Invasion of the Body Snatchers" elements as well).

For the visuals alone - creatures, vegetation etc - I recommend this movie. The movie at times gets bogged down in dialogue but that is just an opinion. A slow suspenseful build up to a gripping ending makes it worth it.

Enjoyable for the style, acting and mystery
11 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Resisted a higher score due to what I feel is the restrained potential in the overall plot. I understand a sparse script and plot is intentional, but it leaves the feeling that more could be done with this.

A man's longing for his mother's embrace, creating beauty to honor her in elegant fashion. Contributing to higher art. But this longing and natural disinclination to discover his true purpose in life leads this wanderer to attempt to solidify this longing in the form of a young beauty untainted by the glamorous and upper-class world.

So his desire, and her concordant need to live a life on her own terms results in a slow but underlying mutual love that creates a type of mutual resignation, albeit in a somewhat macabre manner.

A beautiful film which draws you in with every scene, every subtle expression and movement.

Will close by commending Lesley Manville's performance. Stood out and deserves her own examination in her place in the above dynamic. Always the bridesmaid? She who sacrifices for the art?

The Iceman (2012)
A gripping crime drama
7 February 2018
Fellow reviewer hawkensian somewhat tainted my review by revealing some significant omissions and liberties taken by the scriptwriters. I am not aware of the deeper background of Kuklinski and his extensive history so I came into the movie this way.

So that aside, on its face, this is a very good movie regardless. Acting was stellar by the entire cast, and was glad to see David Schwimmer take on a drama quite handily. Well done. The score was alright, although a bit heavy in some places. Good pacing, costumes and sets should also be mentioned.

Visually Stunning, Great Acting. Too bad the story just fell flat
14 November 2017
Seems to be a recent trend in adventure/superhero movies to have this theme of diversity and multiculturalism and tolerance as this pinnacle of a society, and the villain or conflict coming from those who want to resist that.

Fine, if you're five years old. But if anyone has paid any attention to global events over the past, say, five years, open borders hasn't exactly worked out so good and in fact is quite disastrous for those having to live 'on the ground level.'

So, basically, I am saying that I wish the producers would give the audience some credit and start writing some stories that actually reflect the world we are living in, if only allegorically through these movies.

The Babadook (2014)
Further viewings will flesh out the subtext
11 November 2017
After watching it a second time, I realized there's more to this movie than at first glance.

The acting is superb. Great atmospheric score and timing and selection of sound effects adds to the viewing. Simple settings also draw one into the film.

Second viewing opens up themes about psychological pain of losing loved ones, the insidious influence of having untreated trauma and stress. It's possible that the monster represents the mother's trauma and how she copes with it, with the ending being a realistic but disheartening revelation (quite refreshing from the tragic or resolving ending).

Life (I) (2017)
Engaging morality in the face of adversity
22 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Underneath the common alien monster movie is the message of optimism may not necessarily be a good thing when reality comes crashing down. Also, that no matter how many safeguards are put in place, events sometimes conspire to render them ineffective.

I liked how at various times in the film, the protagonists succumbed to desire, selfishness, bravery and having it result in more misery and disaster.

We are treated to great acting, soundtrack and special effects while offering up a stern lesson about how good intentions often go awry.

Recommended.

An Immersive Experience
10 October 2017
I went in with very little knowledge of the plot, in order to get a fresh, unbiased viewing. Was I ever impressed!

Great acting, set design, soundtrack. Stayed true to the source material while offering expanded worlds to explore. A subtlety to the emotion contrasts with the grim plot line, and these interactions fit perfectly in establishing and developing the plot. Further viewings will help fit the pieces together as to how the characters come together.

Very little to criticize and the director deserves a great amount of praise for a sincere continuation of Ridley Scott's original masterpiece.

Ryan Gosling was a perfect choice for the lead, Jared Leto also impressed, with relative newcomers Ana De Armas and Silvia Hoecks giving stunning performances.
