Read the book, it's better and doesn't have Sheridan Smith in it
31 December 2023
Where to start with this?

I read the book 3 months ago and then learned this show was coming out soon, was cautiously optimistic for it despite the presence of Sheridan Smith in it as lately her work has been abysmal.

Long story short this show gets almost everything right up until the end of the 2nd episode, then it begins to deviate from the book in more and more shocking ways, characters living when they are supposed to be dead, characters being totally different in their goals and motivations and worst of all it seems to think these changes are for the better in the way it presents them.

One of the worst claimed adaptations of Agatha Christie to date
29 December 2023
Sat through all 2 hours of this despite serious misgivings early on, (a racing post available 3 decades before they were printed) the cast appear to be trying their hardest to work with the terrible script and direction so it can't really be blamed on them.

The show lacked violence or even a sense of darkness or foreboding that has already been achieved before in better Agatha Christie adaptions, the colours appeared overly heightened with the contrast turned up 100% which often became distracting.

The point of a good murder mystery is trying to figure it out with the characters as you watch, this was impossible in this show due to none of the clues being revealed until the end, even the lead character stated at the end they hadn't figured it out.

Very disappointing, hopefully this writer isn't allowed "adapt" anymore of Agatha Christies fantastic mystery books.

2 episodes in and this lost me
20 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
She actually used the top secret night phone to call him up for a chat? And he didn't immediately hang up and call her on his cell phone? This is terrible writing.

The first episode was a passable 6-7 out of 10 but the second episode really derails the plot and shows a lack of interest in realism with this spy plot. The main character actually sleeps on a couch near the oval office and no secret service move him on or ask him what he's doing there?

I won't spoil who the main villain probably is but the writing is so transparent that it's clear to see with 8 episodes to go.

Basically if by the second episode this is losing you I wouldn't blame you.

The Catch (2023– )

The Dad-liest catch
20 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show didn't seem to know what it wanted to be and what it did try to be it didn't seem to have the budget for.

The review will contain spoilers so be warned.

One of the first scenes we get is the fisherman's daughter introduces him to her new boyfriend, Ryan, the boyfriend is nasty to the father and its clear we shouldn't like or trust him. The problem here is that this remains the case for the rest of the shows 4 episodes, Ryan remains a nasty character and turns out that the father and the audiences opinion of him from the first 5 minutes was totally justified.

A better show would have started by making us hate the character of Ryan and then slowly revealed him to be a good person who we misjudged. Or someone who while being nasty isn't the true threat of the show. But we get none of that here.

Secondly in the very first scenes of the show we are treated to one of several nightmare sequences in which the father imagines the death of his son that drowned. These nightmares are vivid but play fast and loose with the exact details and seem to suggest early on that there is more to the child's death then meets the eye, perhaps even Ryan was involved?

But at the end of the 4 episode run this has gone nowhere and ends up being about 5 minutes of each episode that was a waste of time, it has nothing to do with the mystery at all.

The acting in the show runs from decent in some early scenes with the father to downright mediocre when it comes to the supporting cast and particularly Ryan who seems to spend the whole show glaring at people which makes you question why anyone would like him?

The worst acted characters of the show are definitely the wife and the detective, the wife seems to spend every scene yelling that she doesn't believe the husband or making a poor attempt to seem to care for her mother while the detective can be described as an empty suit that never seems to be doing anything, questions suspects without cautioning them and pulls warrants out as if they would be that easy to obtain.

And finally we come to the budget issues with the show, it's clear to see that a considerable portion of the shows budget may have gone into location and the principal casting. Its just unfortunate that they seem to have had no money left for things like a police station for interrogation scenes (one character is questioned in a shed on the beach in one of the worst scenes of the show.) They also appear to have had no funding for night time shooting as very few scenes occur at night, even when it would have been expected like the few times the father actually takes his fishing boat out to sea.

The Rookie: Coding (2022)
Season 4, Episode 17
1/10
Worst of season 4
24 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This started off strong with the scenes of the car crash and the arrival at the hospital but from that point it became very cliché and poorly made.

Not every episode of the Rookie needs to feature every character in the Rookie and this is a prime example of what happens when they try to shoehorn in all the cast into a story that couldn't give them enough to do.

Being the kind of cop show it is, we all can let a little lack of attention to detail pass in every episode but this really started to take the biscuit, the storyline around the kidnapped kid was executed poorly and wasn't believable or even enjoyable.

Hopefully the showrunners learn from this episode and make changes so it doesn't happen again.

Never have a sat through so much falsehood and distortion of the truth
11 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Have just finished watching the first 3 episodes of this so-called documentary and am astounded that Netflix thought anyone would be interested in this?

The first episode appeared to be created to win people over and make your like them prior to the big revelations and they are a nice couple to watch together, however it comes across as trying to cry victim from a position of wealth and fame that the vast majority can never achieve.

The second episode began to throw accusations around initially and then quickly got into a race row about Meghan Markles few years of acting, the word 'Bi-racial' is used repeatedly and its done in a way to make it appear this was an issue for the British Public when anyone who lived through it can see it wasn't until they made it an issue.

The third episode derails completely with an almost 20 minute history lesson on British Colonialism and Slavery when you finally realise this is just the latest in Netflix's hate campaign against White People, the show then goes on to try and equate the slave trade to the Harry and Meghan relationship. Harry comes across as very naive and uneducated which is surprising considering his upbringing while Meghan Markle and her Producer friend seem to be running the whole show.

My takeaway from having watched these episodes is that Meghan Markle planned this show from a very early period in her relationship with Harry, recording everything she could with a view to using it later in such a project and it's clear to see he doesn't realise the meal ticket he has become for her.

Not a very well made episode, confusing to follow
19 November 2022
While the case is interesting once its understood, the way its made is confusing and possibly convoluted by the concentration on civil rights/Native American Issues.

The scene where they are standing out in the desert and saying maybe she is out there makes little sense as nothing is offered to suggest why they think that.

The episode wastes too much time on repeating that the police aren't doing their jobs and wild accusations are made about warrants and searches without any comprehension of how the law works in these cases.

So far the latest season of the disappeared has been very good but this episode was not as well presented.

Have to give this a very low review simply because Netflix continue not to discuss these cases properly
1 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The classic Unsolved Mysteries were good because they often provided a balanced or alternating viewpoint that encouraged discussion on the case.

The new Netflix Unsolved Mysteries continues to take a single narrow-minded view to most cases with few or no alternate viewpoints explored. This case is no different and a brief Google of the case after reveals a wealth of important information they clearly chose not to discuss in regards to this case due to it torpedoing the narrative they were pushing.

Give this one a look but then go do your own research, or better yet don't watch it at all.

A tragic story, but no mystery here to be found.

Above average for Liam Neesons latest films but not great
24 May 2022
Lots of other reviews have written spoilers so I won't bother doing that but it has to be asked, why were so many English actors and actresses cast in this movie set on the U. S. - Mexican border? It seemed to just add confusion to the movie where it wasn't needed and it robbed Mexican and American actors of the parts.

So many ways the film could have been better
17 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Many others have pointed out the flaws and the overly gratuitous violence in this film so here I how I think changing some things could have made a better movie.

1) Why introduce 2 additional missing convicts if you arent going to use them for anything? Dropping one off the hospital was pointless and took up a good half hour of movie time showing him being chased pointlessly, a better use would be for a switcheroo with one of them getting Michael's mask and then dying to the mob setting up a twist comeback.

2) Kill off the daughter and granddaughter, Jamie Lee Curtis spent the movie going on and on about why Michael Kills, which is pointless he is just evil, when she should have been getting ready to kick some ass again. While her daughter is killed in the final scene it's too late to save the movie, this film needed him to kill off her family early on and then have us follow her coming to terms with their loss and planning her revenge.

3) The violence was too random, the film needed more suspense and fear of violence rather then the hack and slash we got, in the older movies it was scarier to know he was nearby and hunting them then watching him catch them.

4) The flashback scenes were pointless and confusing, they have written and rewritten the events of the original Halloween movie too many times, it's becoming too difficult to keep the story straight. In future attempts to reboot the franchise they should concentrate on the first two movies which make up the first Halloween night and take it from there.

5) We needed more creative ways of the heroes trying to stop Michael, in the last film they did a few like running him over or burning him but we needed more of that variety in this one, drowning, freezing or even dropping him off the hospital instead of the poor random convict, any of those would have been better then people constantly stabbing or shooting michael and nothing happening.

Just my few thoughts, either way the movie is 1/10.

A very Blah sort of experience
18 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
If you believe in the sort of spirituality that is thrown about in this show it may appeal to you, after 3 episodes the show hasnt really given the viewer much else other then spirituality discussions.

The acting is very good, otherwise this would have been a much lower rating. If you are looking for another Big Little Lies or the Undoing this is far from it, no thrills, no real suspense, very disappointing.

Some reviewers are saying this is the same as the book it's based on, if that is the case the book must have been a very slow slow read.

Would be shocked if anyone really believes the pay off at the end is worth it.

An entertaining if not very convincing true crime documentary
19 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Once you eliminate the sinister or uplifting music placed in key moments you can start to see the lack of concrete proof in either guilt or innocence of those involved. The fact that a killer is forensicly linked to one crime doesnt link them to all the others but in this case it seems proof of one was used to disprove others.

Having finished watching the show I dont believe John Button was proven innocent convincingly I also find myself thinking of Henry Lee Lucas when I hear of the confessions and crimes linked to Eric Edgar Cooke, if you watch this and come to a different conclusion then it just shows how divisive the case is but I remain unconvinced of the purported innocence of the two men exonerated.

And I agree with the other reviews that feel Estelles appearances in the show took away from the story rather then adding to it.

Almost didnt watch this due to the bad reviews but glad I ignored them now
19 June 2021
Due to the amount of bad reviews this show got I was almost not going to bother watching it but decided to give the first episode a go, ended up finishing the show in an afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's not going to win any tv awards but it is in no way as bad as people are claiming on here.

It highlights some important unsolved british criminal cases and gives some new insights while not boring the viewer by being far too long.

Those who wish they hadnt watched this movie
15 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie seemed like it could have been a 5 or 6 out of 10 but midway through the movie it derailed in a big way, and that was with the lightning, it seemed to have a vendetta or something against Angelina Jolie and her repeatedly dodging lightning bolts took me right out of the movie.

The two hitman are played about as well as they could be, it isnt anything you havent seen before. They do seem to go from smooth operators to action movie cliches about halfway through the movie as well.

The film made a big deal in its trailers and other marketing about the fire in the forest but this was woefully underused. There is a brief flashback scene and near the end of the film the fire turns up just for a few minutes of tension and poor CGI.

The brief but sudden violence that you might have come to expect with a Taylor Sheridan movie like Sicario or Wind River isnt here at all, it's a bland, by the numbers film when it comes to the action and wont wow you with anything you havent seen before.

Angelina Jolie was a terrible casting choice, the film could have been salvaged with an older more rugged actress who looks and sounds the part of a tough Smoke Jumper, but Angelina Jolie with her long haired wig doesnt suit it at all.

Steer clear of this film unless you have nothing better to watch.

Black doesnt get to move twice in chess...
30 April 2021
A mediocre and not particularly authentic Tom Clancy movie, flashy action scenes but not very memorable.

Big mistake 5 minutes into the movie, while at a family party, the main character makes checkmate on a chess board in a typical hollywood way of showing his skills. But right before he checkmates as black, the black player had just made a move making the checkmate he does an illegal move. If they didnt bother paying attention to that then what else did they not pay attention to during filming?

Total Garbage, Netflix should never have aired it
13 February 2021
Hey do you like all those you tube conspiracy videos that dont back up their claims with real evidence?! Well have Netflix got a show for you!

Seriously though, this could have been a concise little hour and a half show that kept to the proven evidence and had real experts on board. Instead they give crazy you tubers a pulpit to talk crazy about a poor girl who needed help and didnt get it.

Ben Falcone needs to stop relying on his wife to sell movies
7 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Do you remember The Boss, Life of the Party or Tammy? If the answer to any of these was yes then my next question would be do you remember them and shudder with regret for the time lost?

Superintelligence is another Ben Falcone film that relies too much on the fame other better movies have accrued for Melissa McCarthy, she is a good actress but no amount of good acting can save a movie this bad.

James Corden being in this movie should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of it, the pacing is all over the place and the comedy is nothing you havent seen done better in other movies.

Do yourself a favour and dont waste time on this movie, maybe if enough people dont watch it, Ben Falcone might actually stop getting funded to make more of them?

Two and a half hours I will never get back
7 December 2020
This movie isnt a good movie, a good movie would engage with its audience, have a coherent plot and make you cheer on your favourite characters.

This movie has none of that and no amount of Hans Zimmer copycat music or flashy visual effects can make up for the lifelessness of the film.

The Final Episode Wasnt Necessary
13 October 2020
This show was a very very long-winded story, it is a ghost story rather then a horror story and as such it has all the trappings of something scary while it is really better classed as a tragic drama.

The actors all play their part well with maybe the exception of one or two characters that only appear in an episode or two. The writing is detailed but sometimes too detailed with an emphasis on saying 3 words when 1 would have done which takes us directly to the issue at the heart of Bly Manor, it's too long.

There is an old phrase that comes to mind 'you have been too long for any good it is doing' with Bly Manor the phrase takes physical form as the story tends to take far too long to get to the point it is making and goes back over itself so much that in the end 6-8 episodes would have been more then enough to tell the story they chose to tell in 9.

The story itself is a good one and I wont spoil it here, I just feel that it was mishandled and muddled too much in the later episodes and a different director or writer might have brought it to a sharper focus.

Either way, watch it yourself and see what I mean.

A story of how 4 people can screw up their lives without anyone else really needing to do anything
24 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is just awful, I don't know what anyone working on this film thought they were making but the plot twists are ridiculous and only come about as a result of them all doing the stupidest stuff. It might have made more sense with a younger cast because between the affairs, drug use and childish attempts to hide crimes it was nonsense.

Interesting Cases but Netflix omits key information to fit their own narrative
4 July 2020
Watched 3 of these episodes so far, the UFO episode was particularly chilling. The Rey Rivera episode stands out as being full of omitted evidence, falsehoods and outright lies, not good for a true crime show but also not the first time I've seen this on a Netflix series. Just not unsolved Mysteries, it should have been called something else.

Hulk strikes again
15 November 2019
Director Ang Lee has some really great movies out there, he also has some real stinkers too. This isnt either of them, this film has good action scenes and some pretty wild special effects in places.

But it also has very cookie-cutter action and some very rubbery looking special effects similar to Ang Lee's hulk movie.

Will Smith is perfectly serviceable as the title character but doesn't get many moments to really be Will Smith.

The co-stars are all doing an ok job though none truly stand out or are memorable.

Clive Owen is the oddest character in it, trying to do some sort of American accent at times and then other times sounding like he dubbed over his own lines at a later date...

Either way, if you want a fun action popcorn flick then go watch it, just dont expect it to be one worth seeing again.
