1. Dude Bro Party Massacre III (2015)

Not Rated | 91 min | Comedy, Horror

In the wake of two back-to-back mass murders on Chico's frat row, loner Brent Chirino must infiltrate the ranks of a popular fraternity to investigate his twin brother's murder at the hands of the serial killer known as "Motherface."

Directors: Tomm Jacobsen, Michael Rousselet, Jon Salmon | Stars: Alec Owen, Ben Gigli, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Erik Sandoval

Votes: 2,490

Not sure what to make of this but I think I was entertained by its absolute crass ludicrousness. This is like the result of a demented orgy between RoboCop, Black Dynamite, Evil Dead II and Friday the 13th. 7/10

2. It Follows (2014)

R | 100 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

83 Metascore

A young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.

Director: David Robert Mitchell | Stars: Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist, Olivia Luccardi, Lili Sepe

Votes: 269,097 | Gross: $14.67M

While I like the concept just a tad more than I like the film, I still think it's an effective psychological horror film with one hell of a great soundtrack! 7/10

3. Misery (1990)

R | 107 min | Drama, Thriller

75 Metascore

After a famous author is rescued from a car crash by a fan of his novels, he comes to realize that the care he is receiving is only the beginning of a nightmare of captivity and abuse.

Director: Rob Reiner | Stars: James Caan, Kathy Bates, Richard Farnsworth, Frances Sternhagen

Votes: 235,661 | Gross: $61.28M

Having just finished the book before watching the movie, I can say that the film adaptation succeeds as a decent thriller but fails as an adaptation. 6/10

4. Friday the 13th (1980)

R | 95 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

22 Metascore

A group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer.

Director: Sean S. Cunningham | Stars: Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Jeannine Taylor, Robbi Morgan

Votes: 157,496 | Gross: $39.75M

About twenty minutes too long but an okay start. 4/10

5. Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)

R | 87 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

26 Metascore

Five years after the events of the first film, a summer camp next to the infamous Camp Crystal Lake is preparing to open, but the legend of Jason is weighing heavy on the proceedings.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Betsy Palmer, Amy Steel, John Furey, Adrienne King

Votes: 77,788 | Gross: $21.72M

An improvement over the first, with a more appealing final girl and Jason's establishment as one of my favourite slasher antagonists ever. 5/10

6. Friday the 13th: Part 3 (1982)

R | 95 min | Horror, Thriller

30 Metascore

Jason Voorhees stalks a group of friends who have just arrived to spend the weekend at a cabin near Crystal Lake.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Dana Kimmell, Tracie Savage, Richard Brooker, Terry Ballard

Votes: 60,435 | Gross: $36.69M

Marred by crappy 3D cash-in attempts and an obnoxious cast. The only good things about this one are the speargun kill and Jason donning the legendary hockey mask. 2/10

7. Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)

R | 91 min | Horror, Thriller

33 Metascore

After being announced dead and taken to a morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives, escapes from the hospital, and stalks a group of friends renting a house in the countryside near Crystal Lake.

Director: Joseph Zito | Stars: Erich Anderson, Judie Aronson, Peter Barton, Kimberly Beck

Votes: 59,186 | Gross: $32.98M

A big improvement over the previous film and the beginning of what I like to call the Tommy Jarvis Trilogy. 5/10

8. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

R | 91 min | Horror

76 Metascore

Teenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.

Director: Wes Craven | Stars: Heather Langenkamp, Johnny Depp, Robert Englund, John Saxon

Votes: 262,595 | Gross: $25.50M

A classic! One of my favourite slashers with a psychological horror element unique to its franchise. 8/10

9. Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)

R | 92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

16 Metascore

Still haunted by his past, Tommy Jarvis, who, as a child, killed Jason Voorhees, is sent to a secluded halfway house in the countryside, where the killing of a young man triggers a brutal series of murders in the area.

Director: Danny Steinmann | Stars: Melanie Kinnaman, John Shepherd, Anthony Barrile, Suzanne Bateman

Votes: 43,927 | Gross: $21.93M

A mediocre follow-up to Part IV, with a badly executed twist and annoying characters. 2/10

10. A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)

R | 87 min | Horror

43 Metascore

A teenage boy is haunted in his dreams by deceased child murderer Freddy Krueger, who is out to possess him in order to continue his reign of terror in the real world.

Director: Jack Sholder | Stars: Robert Englund, Mark Patton, Kim Myers, Robert Rusler

Votes: 77,460 | Gross: $30.00M

A not-so-great sequel that doesn't live up to the original but still brings some interesting ideas to the table. 5/10

11. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

R | 86 min | Horror, Thriller

30 Metascore

Tommy Jarvis exhumes Jason Voorhees to cremate his corpse, but inadvertently brings him back to life instead. The newly revived killer seeks revenge, and Tommy may be the only one who can stop him.

Director: Tom McLoughlin | Stars: Thom Mathews, Jennifer Cooke, David Kagen, Kerry Noonan

Votes: 51,241 | Gross: $19.47M

The best of the series in my opinion, with its self-aware humour and hilarious opening scene, as well as its tendency to subvert certain slasher cliches. 6/10

12. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

R | 96 min | Fantasy, Horror

49 Metascore

A psychiatrist familiar with knife-wielding dream demon Freddy Krueger helps teens at a mental hospital battle the killer who is invading their dreams.

Director: Chuck Russell | Stars: Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Craig Wasson, Patricia Arquette

Votes: 90,343 | Gross: $44.79M

An improvement over Freddy's Revenge, Wes Craven takes his series back to more cerebral directions, although some of his characters and effects have not aged well... 6/10

13. Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988)

R | 88 min | Horror, Thriller

13 Metascore

Jason Voorhees is accidentally freed from his watery prison by a telekinetic teenager. Now, only she can stop him.

Director: John Carl Buechler | Stars: Terry Kiser, Jennifer Banko, John Otrin, Susan Blu

Votes: 42,372 | Gross: $19.17M

A forgettable entry, though Jason's battles with the Carrie ripoff are pretty amusing. 5/10

14. A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (1988)

R | 93 min | Horror

56 Metascore

Freddy Krueger returns once again to terrorize the dreams of the remaining Dream Warriors, as well as those of a young woman who may be able to defeat him for good.

Director: Renny Harlin | Stars: Robert Englund, Rodney Eastman, John Beckman, Kisha Brackel

Votes: 61,662 | Gross: $49.37M

An interesting sequel that is neither good nor bad, The Dream Master brings along a few more interesting concepts into the franchise, even if it's slightly marred by poor execution in some spots. 5/10

15. Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)

R | 100 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller

14 Metascore

Jason Voorhees is accidentally awakened from his watery grave and ends up stalking a ship full of graduating high-school students headed to Manhattan, New York.

Director: Rob Hedden | Stars: Jensen Daggett, Kane Hodder, Todd Caldecott, Tiffany Paulsen

Votes: 43,091 | Gross: $14.34M

I can't help but enjoy this film more than most, if only because it's hilarious in its badness, rather than dull and slogging (like Parts III or V). The New York portion should have been longer, but hey, what we got wasn't entirely disappointing. 3/10

16. A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989)

R | 89 min | Fantasy, Horror

54 Metascore

The pregnant Alice finds Freddy Krueger striking through the sleeping mind of her unborn child, hoping to be reborn into the real world.

Director: Stephen Hopkins | Stars: Robert Englund, Lisa Wilcox, Kelly Jo Minter, Danny Hassel

Votes: 50,686 | Gross: $22.17M

Another interesting and slightly disturbing entry in the franchise that isn't entirely great, but hey, the ideas are fresh and new (somewhat) and the set designs are ingenious. 5/10

17. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)

R | 89 min | Fantasy, Horror

39 Metascore

Dream-haunting Freddy Krueger returns once again to prowl the nightmares of Springwood's last surviving teenager, and of a woman whose personal connection to Krueger may mean his doom.

Director: Rachel Talalay | Stars: Robert Englund, Lisa Zane, Shon Greenblatt, Lezlie Deane

Votes: 51,005 | Gross: $34.87M

Complete crap. 1/10

18. Jason Goes to Hell (1993)

R | 87 min | Fantasy, Horror, Thriller

17 Metascore

Serial killer Jason Voorhees' supernatural origins are revealed.

Director: Adam Marcus | Stars: John D. LeMay, Kari Keegan, Kane Hodder, Steven Williams

Votes: 36,818 | Gross: $15.94M

Aside from a few fun shootouts and a promising opening sequence, Jason Goes to Hell is a dumb slog. 2/10

19. New Nightmare (1994)

R | 112 min | Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

64 Metascore

A demonic force has chosen Freddy Krueger as its portal to the real world. Can Heather Langenkamp play the part of Nancy one last time and trap the evil trying to enter our world?

Director: Wes Craven | Stars: Heather Langenkamp, Robert Englund, Jf Davis, Miko Hughes

Votes: 64,218 | Gross: $18.09M

A return to form for the franchise and the best of the Elm Street sequels! 7/10

20. Jason X (2001)

R | 92 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

25 Metascore

Jason Voorhees is cryogenically frozen at the beginning of the 21st century, and is discovered in the 25th century and taken to space. He gets thawed, and begins stalking and killing the crew of the spaceship that's transporting him.

Director: James Isaac | Stars: Kane Hodder, Lexa Doig, Jeff Geddis, David Cronenberg

Votes: 61,544 | Gross: $13.12M

Only slightly more fun to watch than Jason Goes to Hell, if only for that sleeping bag scene and the sheer outdated stupidity of it all. 2/10

21. Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

R | 97 min | Action, Horror

37 Metascore

Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees return to terrorize the teenagers of Elm Street. Only this time, they're out to get each other, too.

Director: Ronny Yu | Stars: Robert Englund, Ken Kirzinger, Kelly Rowland, Monica Keena

Votes: 127,307 | Gross: $82.62M

More fun than it has any right to be. 5/10

22. Friday the 13th (2009)

R | 97 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

34 Metascore

A group of young adults visit a boarded up campsite named Crystal Lake where they soon encounter the mysterious Jason Voorhees and his deadly intentions.

Director: Marcus Nispel | Stars: Jared Padalecki, Amanda Righetti, Derek Mears, Danielle Panabaker

Votes: 116,941 | Gross: $65.00M

Probably the best thing that Michael Bay was ever involved in. Which isn't saying much... 5/10

23. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

35 Metascore

The spectre of a disfigured man haunts the children of the parents who murdered him, stalking and killing them in their dreams.

Director: Samuel Bayer | Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Rooney Mara, Kyle Gallner, Katie Cassidy

A piss-poor remake to a great original. 2/10

R | 92 min | Horror

40 Metascore

While Dr. Loomis hunts for Michael Myers, a traumatized Laurie is rushed to Haddonfield Memorial Hospital, and The Shape is not far behind her.

Director: Rick Rosenthal | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Donald Pleasence, Charles Cyphers, Jeffrey Kramer

Votes: 101,724 | Gross: $25.53M

A not-so-worthy sequel to the original. 5/10

26. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)

R | 98 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

50 Metascore

Kids all over America want Silver Shamrock masks for Halloween. Doctor Daniel Challis seeks to uncover a plot by Silver Shamrock owner Conal Cochran.

Director: Tommy Lee Wallace | Stars: Tom Atkins, Stacey Nelkin, Dan O'Herlihy, Michael Currie

Votes: 61,014 | Gross: $14.40M

Cool concept. Unfortunate execution. Dan O'Herlihy was great, though. 4/10

27. Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)

R | 88 min | Horror, Thriller

34 Metascore

Ten years after his original massacre, the invalid Michael Myers awakens on Halloween Eve and returns to Haddonfield to kill his seven-year-old niece. Can Dr. Loomis stop him?

Director: Dwight H. Little | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Ellie Cornell, Danielle Harris, George P. Wilbur

Votes: 58,653 | Gross: $17.77M

While it's loaded with the same old slasher genre stupidity, this one has some surprisingly smart characters (sometimes). I always joked about how people should just look at the place the killer is in, go "Nope!" and leave town. There was that, and there was a little freshness in its execution along the way. Far from perfect, but not bad, not bad at all... 6/10

28. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)

R | 96 min | Horror, Thriller

28 Metascore

One year after the events of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988), the Shape returns to Haddonfield once again in an attempt to kill his now-mute niece.

Director: Dominique Othenin-Girard | Stars: Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, Beau Starr

Votes: 47,091 | Gross: $11.64M

Aaaaaaaand we're given a continuation that's worse than anything in the series so far. Sigh. 3/10.

29. Halloween (I) (2018)

R | 106 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

67 Metascore

Laurie Strode confronts her long-time foe, Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Director: David Gordon Green | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, James Jude Courtney

Votes: 169,127 | Gross: $159.34M

Just came back from the theatres after seeing this and I'm happy to say that this is a worthy successor to the original. The few gripes I have with it are pretty mild; it's overall a great time at the movies. 7/10.

30. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995)

R | 87 min | Horror, Thriller

10 Metascore

Six years after Michael Myers last terrorized Haddonfield, he returns there in pursuit of his niece, Jamie Lloyd, who has escaped with her newborn child, for which Michael and a mysterious cult have sinister plans.

Laurie Strode, now the dean of a Northern California private school with an assumed name, must battle the Shape one last time, as the life of her own son hangs in the balance.

Director: Steve Miner | Stars: Jamie Lee Curtis, Josh Hartnett, Adam Arkin, Michelle Williams

Votes: 82,055 | Gross: $55.04M

One of the more entertaining sequels, but not a great film on its own. 5/10
