A politically-minded enforcer's misguided trust in his lieutenant leads him to suspect his wife of infidelity in this adaptation of Shakespeare's 'Othello'.

Director: Vishal Bhardwaj | Stars: Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma

Votes: 22,098 | Gross: $0.79M

Based on "Othello" from William Shakespeare

Excellent work done by Vishal Bhardwaj. Othello is shown in rural UP/MP. Shows how the fear and insecurities are universal and can be transferred to different time and country. Saif Ali gave the most awesome performance and stole the show in my opinion.

2. Maqbool (2003)

Not Rated | 132 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

The intrigue of the Shakespearean tragedy 'Macbeth' is transposed to the Mumbai underworld.

Director: Vishal Bhardwaj | Stars: Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah

Votes: 12,009

Based on "Macbeth" from William Shakespeare

Again an excellent movie made by Vishal Bhardwaj. It felt that Bard himself came and adapted his play to modern day Bombay.

3. Angoor (1982)

Not Rated | 131 min | Comedy

Based on Shakespeare's 'A Comedy of Errors', this is a story of identical twins (2 pairs) and mistaken identities.

Director: Gulzar | Stars: Sanjeev Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Deven Verma, Aruna Irani

Votes: 5,820

Based on "Comedy of Errors" from William Shakespeare

One of my all time favorite comedies. I think the movie was only loosely adapted. I read original work long time ago so can't be too sure. Both the original and adaptation were great!

135 min | Comedy, Drama

A man and his assistant go on a business trip, which results in a comedy of errors.

Director: Debu Sen | Stars: Kishore Kumar, Asit Kumar Sen, Surekha, Tanuja Samarth

Votes: 73

Based on "Comedy of Errors" from William Shakespeare

This is older and lesser know movie based on "Comedy of Errors" I had seen this movie on doordarshan and remember it to be fun. This is not as well known as Angoor made later by Gulzaar.

5. Dev.D (2009)

Director: Anurag Kashyap | Stars: Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill, Kalki Koechlin, Dibyendu Bhattacharya

Votes: 32,240 | Gross: $0.01M

Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay

Sarat Babu apparently wrote this novel when he was only seventeen. I haven't read the original novel but have what a work! Atleast four Hindi movies have been made on this and IMHO "Dev D" is the best. Anurag Kashyap transformed Bengal into Punjab and Calcutta into Delhi. Excellent work done by Abhay Deol, Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin.

6. Devdas (I) (2002)

Not Rated | 185 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

After his wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with, Devdas Mukherjee's life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain.

Votes: 46,917 | Gross: $3.50M

Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay

This was the mega strarrer movie based on Devdas. Movie did well for Aishwarya Rai who acted as Paro and did that with aplomb. Shahrukh Khan didn't do justice to Devdas and Madhuri didn't really sparkle as Chandramukhi. Overall I was disappointed by this version.

7. Devdas (1955)

The scion of a wealthy landowner family turns to alcohol and self-pity and slowly self-destructs after class differences force him to break off his relationship with his childhood sweetheart.

Votes: 2,027

Based on Bengali Romance novel "Devdas" by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay

This was the Dilip Kumar starrer. I have only seen snippets of it. This movie in some ways cemented Dilip Kumar as the tragedy king. Before my time so can't comment much on this.

8. Devdas (1936)

Director: Ram Gopal Varma | Stars: Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Kay Kay Menon, Supriya Pathak

Votes: 17,435

Based on "Godfather" by Mario Puzo.

Somewhat loosely adapted on Godfather. Very well done by Amitabh as the Godfather and Abhishek as the young Michael in making. Much better than some of the other films made on this novel.

10. Dayavan (1988)

Not Rated | 173 min | Action, Crime, Drama

The story of Dayavan, a benevolent gangster who dedicates his life to helping those less fortunate than himself.

Director: Feroz Khan | Stars: Vinod Khanna, Feroz Khan, Amala Akkineni, Amrish Puri

Votes: 649

Based on "Godfather" by Mario Puzo.

This movie was a pathetic remake of Tamil hit movie "Nayakan" which in itself was adaptation of Godfather. I don't have much good to say about Dayavan as it was a poorly made remake by Feroz Khan where he lifted scene by scene including a song.

11. 3 Idiots (2009)

PG-13 | 170 min | Comedy, Drama

67 Metascore

Two friends are searching for their long lost companion. They revisit their college days and recall the memories of their friend who inspired them to think differently, even as the rest of the world called them "idiots".

Director: Rajkumar Hirani | Stars: Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Mona Singh, Sharman Joshi

Votes: 434,366 | Gross: $6.53M

Based on "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat

Must admit that I find very little common between the movie and the book. There was a controversy where movie folks including Aamir refused to give Chetan Bhagat his due. Movie was a big hit and enjoyable in my opinion. Book was just ok.

12. Kai Po Che (2013)

40 Metascore

Votes: 38,748 | Gross: $1.12M

Based on "The 3 mistakes of my life" by Chetan Bhagat

Read the book and also watched the movie. Book was nice read but nothing major. Movie didn't do justice to the book. Cricket angle was totally muted in the movie. Love story between Vidhya and the hero was also not done properly. Even though novel was not good movie was worse.

13. 2 States (2014)

Not Rated | 149 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

This movie chronicles how Chetan met his wife and the difficulties they faced due to their cultural differences.

Director: Abhishek Varman | Stars: Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amrita Singh, Revathi

Votes: 27,031 | Gross: $2.22M

A movie based on "2 States - The story of my marriage" by Chetan Bhagat.

Kind of an autobiography by Chetan about his time in IIM A. I haven't read the book but have seen the movie. Movie was kind of ok. I loved the role played by Amrita Singh as the Punjabi mother-in-law. Several of my wife's friends who are Punjabi could see their mother in laws in her. I won't name names!

Votes: 22

Votes: 15,357 | Gross: $3.22M

I have only seen the movie and it is an excellent movie to watch. Lisa Ray and Seema Biswas have acted beautifully.

23. Saawariya (2007)

Votes: 8,379 | Gross: $0.89M

Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story "White Nights"

Haven't read the book but could make out that movie was slow and painful because it was trying to adapt to a story. Not a good effort by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In my opinion Vishal Bhardwaj and Anurag Kashyap are the leaders of adapting literature to movies.

24. Uphaar (1971)

Votes: 572

based on Ruskin Bond's fictional novella, "A Flight of Pigeons", set around the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Haven't read the novel but did see the movie. One of the few movies in which Shashi Kapoor acted with his wife Jeniffer. BTW, Jeniffer acts as the mother of girl which whom Shashi Kapoor falls in love and wants to marry. Was a decent movie and good watch if you like period movies.

This is the old kalyug based on Sanskrit epic "Mahabharat" by Vedvyasa.

This movie is not to be confused with the new Kalyug. Movie is done beautifully. It depicts a feuding family fighting for control of a business empire. It has some really good actors. Here is a quick guide of who plays what.

Dropadi --> Rekha Karan --> Shashi Kapoor Bhim --> Kalbhushan

Director: Prakash Jha | Stars: Ajay Devgn, Ranbir Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif

Votes: 18,922 | Gross: $1.44M

This one movie is mishmash of two pieces of literature; Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" and our very own Vedvyasa Sanskrit epic "Mahabharat".

Movie is kind of confused and not very good in my opinion. It has political families that are vying for control. Best way to describe it is to talk about who plays what.

Ranbir Kapoor gives a decent performance as Arjun/Michael. Nana Patekar is mostly acting as Krishna but you also see Tom Hagen in him Ajay Devgn is the bastard child raised by dalits and acting as Karna. Manoj Bajpayee is our good old Duryodhana. Arjun Rampal is the elder brother who dies and is our Sonny Corleane Katrina is kind of like Dropadi but somewhat muddled. She loves Ranbir (Arjun) but gets married to the older brother. We could also see Kay Adams in her as she loses her love to another woman who gets blown up.

Let me know which book you think this movie copies more.

Director: Shekhar Kapur | Stars: Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Jugal Hansraj, Urmila Matondkar

Votes: 4,404

based on book "Man Woman and Child" by Erich Segal

I first saw the movie as a 13 year old and was totally blow by the performance given by the entire cast. This subject is kind of difficult to adapt in a Hindi movie where you don't really deal with topics like infidelity and bastards. This movie however punched above its weight with the help of some great songs penned by Gulzar. The book was ok and not necessarily as great. Worth a read and watch though.

40. Yeh Vaada Raha (1982)

Votes: 1,127

based on the 1905 Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada"

Haven't read the novel but have seen the movie. This movie was done by Rekha when she was at her peak. She carries this movie on her shoulder and kind of cemented her place as the top heroine of her time. Aishwarya Rai later tried the remake but it didn't do well at all. Movie overall was ok but the songs were really good and Rekha took them to the next level.

44. Umrao Jaan (2006)

Votes: 2,048

based on the Urdu novel "Umrao Jaan Ada"

Haven't seen the movie or read the novel. This movie is known more as a flop remake of 1981 Rekha starrer by the same name. Aishwarya who was on top when this movie was released just couldn't generate enough interest and this movie was a flop while Rekha starrer had performed well.

Haven't read the book but did see the movie very long time ago on Doordarshan. I remember it to be a boring movie as it didn't have any fight scenes. Hope to watch it again and read the book.

based on the Marathi novel Raau by Nagnath S. Inamdar

Haven't read the novel nor have seen the movie. What I do find interesting is how the history these days is fictionalized. Not sure what is true and what is not. Our director Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems to be taking the lead in this direction.

Loosely based on the epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.

Have not read the poem but did have the misfortune of paying 10 dollars head to watch this garbage of a movie. Deepika performed excellently but rest of this movie was third rate. Now this movie is supposed to be based on a Poem but our friends in Rajasthan assumes this to be a true history glorifying Sati. Buses were burnt and properties were destroyed for sake of this movie. Just don't understand why.

The plot is inspired from the novel 'The vulture is a patient bird' by James Hedley Chase

Saw the movie but haven't read the original novel. Movie was famous because of presence of number of non Indian actors like Rex Harrison. Kind of average movie with not much to right home about.
