1. X2 (2003)

PG-13 | 134 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

68 Metascore

When anti-mutant Colonel William Stryker kidnaps Professor X and attacks his school, the X-Men must ally with their archenemy Magneto to stop him.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen

Votes: 576,057 | Gross: $214.95M

While maybe it is starting to feel a tad dated, this is still the best X-film - this one is just the most complete, the most satisfying as a cinematic experience, from the appearance of Nightcrawler to the hints of Phoenix at the end. Plus, one word: Famke. Too bad the follow-up was so atrocious.

2. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

75 Metascore

The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy

Votes: 745,080 | Gross: $233.92M

Probably the best X-film on paper - so well made, with memorable characters and scenes (Quicksilver is a fan favorite and his rescue scene a classic). As much as I liked it the first time I saw it, a second viewing kind of diminished it to merely very good. But the best part about it is that MacAvoy and Fassbender really find their stride and prove surprisingly good replacements for Stewart and McKellan - not an easy task.

3. X: First Class (2011)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

In the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Bacon

Votes: 723,598 | Gross: $146.41M

Very good overall, although kind of forgettable. I mean, do you remember the plot? I just remember Kevin Bacon being rather mean to everyone (and not just mean dancing), but especially mean to Darwin, and Magneto making bad life choices. But the film did a good job of soft-rebooting the franchise after the hideousness that was the previous two films (see 9 and 10 on this list).

4. X-Men (2000)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

In a world where mutants (evolved super-powered humans) exist and are discriminated against, two groups form for an inevitable clash: the supremacist Brotherhood, and the pacifist X-Men.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen

Votes: 646,468 | Gross: $157.30M

Quite dated, but a nice effort. This is the film that brought superheroes into the modern era, showing that heroes other than Batman could be done well. The biggest flaws of this film was the weakening of Storm and Cyclops...I mean, these two were the biggest badasses of the comics, but have been greatly reduced in favor of a Wolvo-centric franchise. In the comics, Cyclops was usually the central X-man, followed by Wolverine and Storm, the probably Jean Grey. I like James Marsten and Halle Berry, but their depictions of these two characters--or at least the scripting of them--is super weak.

5. The Wolverine (2013)

PG-13 | 126 min | Action, Sci-Fi

61 Metascore

Wolverine comes to Japan to meet an old friend whose life he saved years ago, and gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving yakuza and mutants.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima

Votes: 492,046 | Gross: $132.56M

A fun film, not great but nothing to complain about.

6. Logan (2017)

R | 137 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

77 Metascore

In a future where mutants are nearly extinct, an elderly and weary Logan leads a quiet life. But when Laura, a mutant child pursued by scientists, comes to him for help, he must get her to safety.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Boyd Holbrook

Votes: 831,238 | Gross: $226.28M

Arguably deserves to be at the top of the list, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of the grimdark approach to X-films. Plus seeing a little girl shred people up is just wrong. That said, Professor X with dementia is brilliant.

7. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

PG-13 | 144 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

52 Metascore

In the 1980s the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive through bringing destruction to the world.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult

Votes: 461,029 | Gross: $155.44M

I wanted to like this one so bad that I pretended it was a better film than it actually was. It wasn't horrible, just terribly flawed - from Apocalypse's goofy suit and Oscar Issac's wooden acting, to the degradation of Archangel to Sophie Turner's utter lack of personality (hope she improves for Dark Phoenix...I miss Famke).

8. Deadpool (2016)

R | 108 min | Action, Comedy

65 Metascore

A wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.

Director: Tim Miller | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein

Votes: 1,125,380 | Gross: $363.07M

I know this is the darling of many fans, but I just found this whole film kind of annoying and terribly overrated. Ryan Reynolds is his typical irritating self, but even more so in this film. I probably would've liked this film more if I was 15.

9. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

PG-13 | 104 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

58 Metascore

The human government develops a cure for mutations, and Jean Grey becomes a darker uncontrollable persona called the Phoenix who allies with Magneto, causing escalation into an all-out battle for the X-Men.

Director: Brett Ratner | Stars: Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Famke Janssen

Votes: 540,639 | Gross: $234.36M

An abomination that completely mangled the Greatest X-Men Story Ever.

10. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Sci-Fi

40 Metascore

The early years of James Logan, featuring his rivalry with his brother Victor Creed, his service in the special forces team Weapon X, and his experimentation into the metal-lined mutant Wolverine.

Director: Gavin Hood | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Danny Huston

Votes: 530,467 | Gross: $179.88M
