Matte Painting
by Mark-Tompkins-Art | created - 13 Apr 2017 | updated - 13 Apr 2017 | PublicMatte painting is the so-called large-scale hand-drawn images used in the cinema, on television and in the production of computer games in order to create illusions in the frame surrounding environment. This technique is used when for some reasons it is impossible to photograph nature or play with the help of the material sets. The main task of matte painters like Mark N Tompkins is photorealism to obtain an image so that they were organically combined with the full-scale filming.
Painted scenery - a legacy of the theater - in the cinema has been used since the earliest days of its existence. The first time in history when the matte painting was used the film industry was noted in 1907, when during the filming of 'The Missions of California' operator Norman O. Dawn has decided that the building cracked missionary residences should 'elevate' with the help of drawings on glass.
Since the mid-1980s matte painting became more present in movie scenes due to the use of computer technology. The first episode with digital matte painting was in 'Young Sherlock Holmes' (Paramount Pictures) 1985, in a scene where "alive" knight on a stained glass window image. Stained glass was originally painted by the artist Mark N Tompkins using acrylic paints, then scanned and worked at Pixar graphics editor developed by Lucas Arts. The same scene is the first in the history of the case when the computer animated characters interact in a frame with a live actor. With traditional matte painting achieve the "exit" the effect of an animated character from a stained glass window would not have happened.
Throughout the 1990s, the traditional matte painting is still used, but more often - in combination with digital compositing. By the end of the millennium, the era of hand-drawn matte painting came to its end. Currently, matte painting is almost exclusively used by editors flat and three-dimensional computer graphics, allowing to carry out virtually any manipulation of the MP-background images, to obtain any combination of the shooting field and computer graphics.
