The Oscar race is a marathon, not a sprint. There are dozens of pit stops along the way and trophies to be given out before the 2025 Oscars on March 2. With its surprising best picture win at the Critics Choice Awards — its only prize of the night — the $6 million dramedy, which claimed the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, has solidified itself as a major contender in an unpredictable awards season.

If the four-year gap between Frank Ocean’s debut studio album Channel Orange and his follow-ups Endless and Blonde felt long, it’s now been over double the wait to see if another album will ever materialize from the wunderkind artist. On Thursday, Anora‘s Sean Baker added his name to it. The filmmaker pulled off that rare hat trick-plus-one — he landed noms for director, picture, original screenplay and editing.

Every year, the Oscars gather to celebrate Hollywood’s picks for the Best in film. Yet a few nights earlier, a body that anyone can pay for the privilege to join “celebrates” the industry’s worst. The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) will be held on March 1, 2025, to recognize the worst films of 2024. The nominees were chosen by 1,202 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, including movie fans, critics, and journalists. This year, many comic book adaptations received nominations, such as ‘The Crow,’ ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’

Several well-known actors, including Ariana DeBose, Cate Blanchett, and Joaquin Phoenix, were also mentioned, with Jon Voight getting a nod for his roles in four films. 2024 was really bad for superhero adaptations considering that the movies received eighteen nominations overall.

Razzie Awards 2025: It is the award season, and actors and filmmakers anticipate the nominations and the awards, but not this one. It is the Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies and Razzie Awards. From Mufasa: The Lion King to Madame Web and even Joker 2 are in the run for the Razzies. This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.

In the running for Worst Picture at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards — watch a video about them above — are vidgame adaptation Borderlands, musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, Marvel’s Madame Web, Freancis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis and presidential biopic Reagan.

Not coincidentally, all five are tied with six Razzie noms apiece. Those films’ helmers also are up for the Director “prize,” except for Reagan‘s Sean McNamara; Jerry Seinfeld took that fifth slot for his Pop Tarts comedy Unfrosted. The erstwhile sitcom king also is up for Worst Actor.

It’s not the biggest honor to be nominated for the “worst” in Hollywood and there are plenty of Oscar-winning stars who are up for these awards this year.

The winners will be revealed in a press release on March 1, one day before the 2025 Oscars.

Borderlands, Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis and Reagan are tied for the most nominations with six each, including a Worst Picture nomination for all five.

Joker: Folie à Deux leads the Razzie Awards noms, which recognize the worst movies and performances of the year, with a total of seven mentions.

Borderlands, Madame Web, Megalopolis and Reagan followed with six noms apiece, it was announced Tuesday. Unfrosted landed with four noms, while The Crow nabbed two noms.

Among the actors receiving mentions were Joaquin Phoenix, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Jon Voight, one of President Donald Trump’s newly appointed “Ambassadors to Hollywood,” who was nominated for his performances in a “near record” four films in one year.

Organizers joked that the worst picture nominees will compete for a “$4.97 gold spray-painted” statuette and shared their thoughts on each of the films in contention (see below).

Nominees were chosen via emailed ballots to 1,202 Razzie members (movie buffs, film critics and journalists) from 49 states and about two dozen foreign countries who chose five top contenders in each of nine categories.

The average moviegoer might be eager to watch another chapter in their favorite franchise, but when it comes to the most esteemed awards ceremony in the land, sequels struggle to get much major attention at the Oscars. Throughout its 96 ceremonies so gar, nine direct sequels have been nominated for Best Picture, only two of which have been fortunate enough to go home with the shiny golden man. The first win was in 1975 when Francis Ford Coppola explored two different generations of the Corleone family in "The Godfather Part II." The second wouldn't come until 2004 when the Academy praised Peter Jackson's first fond farewell to Middle-earth and the best of the "Lord and the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

"Star Wars" is full of fascinating, enigmatic villains, most of them get barely any dialogue, let alone their background or backstory explained — in the movies at least. Whether it's Darth Vader being introduced as just a tall, menacing guy clad in dark, robotic armor, or Boba Fett's silent, striking suit of armor, these antagonists work because of how little we know of them, and how memorable their designs are.

This is especially true in the prequel trilogy, where we get characters like Darth Maul, who is just evil incarnate, a perfect design. Though perhaps not as well-liked, General Grievous' own character design is just as effective. He's a villain who's instantly memorable and striking, his cybernetic exterior and biological organs making him rather mysterious and alluring.

Grievous, like most things "Star Wars," went through many changes before making his debut, with George Lucas even briefly considering making the character Darth Maul in disguise.

While The Godfather contains many villainous figures, the lack of one true main antagonist remains a hallmark of Francis Ford Coppola's genre-defining gangster movie. Since releasing in 1972, The Godfather's reputation has aged like a fine Sicilian wine, and the first chapter of the Corleone family trilogy continues to be considered a leading contender when debating the greatest movies ever made. That same debate often yields the line "a movie is only as good as its villain," and that pearl of wisdom has been proven right on many occasions.

Heath Ledger's Joker was crucial to The Dark Knight, Ralph Fiennes' Amon Göth cut an unforgettably sinister presence in Schindler's List, and the Good and Ugly would have been a lot less interesting without the Bad. Curiously, The Godfather stands apart. Plenty of nefarious figures are littered throughout the story, but pinning down one main villain from The Godfather's cast is far from straightforward.

The Outsiders was bursting with future star power, including Ralph Macchio, when it was released in 1983. Alongside Macchio, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed film starred a slew of major Hollywood actors including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, and Diane Lane. The Outsiders is based on the seminal 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton, and follows two gangs of young people — the poor greasers and the more wealthy Socs — as they fight for dominance in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s.

Exclusive: If there’s one takeaway from the holiday box office season, audiences couldn’t quit Focus Features’ period gothic horror movie Nosferatu.

The Robert Eggers-directed title is now the Universal specialty label’s second highest-grossing release at the domestic box office at $84.4 million, overtaking 2005’s three-time Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain ($83M) and ranking behind the studio’s top-grossing title ever, 2019’s Downton Abbey ($96.8M). On a global basis, Nosferatu ranks as Focus’ seventh highest-grossing title with north of $142M worldwide.

Also noteworthy, Nosferatu is reaching its great heights at the B.O. sans award noms from the Golden Globes or Oscars (which have yet to be announced) or festival buzz; such lynchpins were in part responsible for the breakout success of 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee’s gay-themed Western.

Focus also has bragging rights in that Nosferatu beats the domestic haul of any title, including horror, when compared with its specialty rival A24.
