Judd Apatow, returning on Saturday night to host his sixth DGA Awards, brought his signature roasting style to this year’s nominated films, the It Ends With Us legal drama and, of course, the Trump Administration.
Telling the crowd, “I’m what Mel Brooks would look like if he took The Substance,” as he arrived on stage at the Beverly Hilton, Apatow acknowledged how Francis Ford Coppola and Kevin Costner had both spent fortunes making passion projects that bombed at the box office. “Imagine being Kevin Costner’s kids and realizing you don’t get a trust fund, but you do get to watch Horizon one and two whenever you like,” he teased.
He commented how Wicked, on the other hand, had done so well at the box office, and “usually to make that much money you have to sue Blake Lively,” as the audience broke out in laughter in...

“Anora” director Sean Baker has won the DGA Award for Theatrical Feature, gaining significant Oscar momentum ahead of final voting.
With its surprising best picture win at the Critics Choice Awards — its only prize of the night — the $6 million dramedy, which claimed the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, has solidified itself as a major contender in an unpredictable awards season.
“I feel like the luckiest guy in the world to be able to do thing I knew I wanted to do since I was 5 years old,” Baker told the crowd Saturday at the conclusion of the 77th annual DGA Awards, held at the Beverly Hilton.
A wide-open year has unfolded with plenty of twists and turns, including campaign controversies and surprising Oscar snubs like DGA nominee Edward Berger and recent Critics Choice shocking victor Jon M. Chu for “Wicked.”

Silver Bear Award Winners (Photo Credit – Koimoi)
Berlin International Film Festival is one of the biggest award shows in the world and is known for recognizing cinema as an art. The show has many prestigious awards, including the Golden Bear for the Best Film and the Silver Bear for the Best Director. The Silver Bear, introduced in 1956, has since been one of the most coveted awards for a director. That honor has been bestowed upon filmmakers whose vision and storytelling push the boundaries of creative expression.
Remarkably, only four directors have been awarded this award on multiple occasions. Among this prestigious quartet stands a figure whose legacy transcends national borders: Satyajit Ray. His work not only elevated Indian cinema to a global platform but also set a high benchmark for artistic excellence. Ray is the only director to win the award in two consecutive years.

When a show like The Rookie goes head-to-head with NCIS, you’d think the lead star would have some epic, drawn-out take on why it stacks up. But Nathan Fillion? He kept it short, sweet, and straight to the point – just like the show itself.

While NCIS has been the big dog for decades, The Rookie brings fresh energy, wild cases, and that signature Fillion charm. If anyone’s got the perfect answer for why this show slaps, it’s the guy calling the shots, and honestly, he might’ve just nailed it.

An indisputable icon of the celluloid, revered for his bravura performances and infectious charisma, Al Pacino’s identity has become an inextricable element in the canon of American cinema. In a career spanning more than half a century, Pacino has cultivated an enviable track record, working with greats like Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet, Martin Scorsese, and William Friedkin, to name a few of cinema’s wizards, and producing some of the most excellent performances ever put on screen.
Born Alfredo James Pacino, the South Bronx native started honing his acting chops in theatre before taking the leap into cinema with a small role in “Me, Natalie” (1969). He next surveyed the life of a person with a heroin addiction in “The Panic in Needle Park.” He would then go on to play one of the most popular characters in cinema in “The Godfather,” shooting him to superstardom – all at thirty-two,...

George Lucas is best known for creating the Star Wars franchise, a multi-billion dollar global phenomenon that started in 1977. However, Lucas first made a name for himself with the 1973 coming-of-age film America Graffiti. It was produced by Francis Ford Coppola known for directing classics such as The Godfather.

The Current Debate connects the dots around a topic of the critical conversation.Fire of Wind.Whenever I try to distill a year of moviegoing memories down to a best-of list, I like to turn to an essay telling me why I shouldn’t. “Lists of films will not save you,” Elena Gorfinkel wrote in an incendiary manifesto published by Another Gaze in 2019; “lists of films will not save films. … Lists do not enshrine your hallowed taste, they only dilute it. Lists are attentional real estate for the fatigued, enervated, click-hungry.” As someone who annually partakes in such an absurd ritual, I don’t look at lists to cross-check the consensus around this or that title, but to see what they might reveal about our relationship with the medium: how we produce, consume, and discuss moving images in a world that’s become increasingly saturated with them. Anyone attempting to...

If the four-year gap between Frank Ocean’s debut studio album Channel Orange and his follow-ups Endless and Blonde felt long, it’s now been over double the wait to see if another album will ever materialize from the wunderkind artist. We now have a major update on Ocean’s creative output, but rather than a new album in the works, he’s started shooting his directorial debut.
Variety reports David Jonsson has landed the lead role of Ocean’s directorial debut, which Ocean also wrote and is now shooting in Mexico City. While no plot details have arrived, a bit more digging reveals the current title is Philly and shooting actually began in mid-December. As seen below, Ocean was also spotted in Mexico City this past summer shooting footage. Earlier rumors suggested A24 and Taylor Russell were involved in the project, but that has yet to be confirmed.

If you're making a list of the most timeless sitcoms ever produced, "The Golden Girls" has to be at or near the top. Yes, it's so very 1980s with its Miami fashions and decor, but its themes and sense of humor have aged better than most hit series of its era. At any moment, you can hop on Hulu, click on a random episode, and know you'll laugh yourself silly while watching Dorothy Zbornak (Bea Arthur), Blanche Devereaux (Rue McClanahan), Rose Nylund (Betty White), and Sophia Petrillo (Estelle Getty) get in some kind of jam and ultimately be reminded of the importance and power of friendship.
The writing on "The Golden Girls" was always sharp (it won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series twice), but the secret to its seven years of sustained success (it ranked in the Nielsen ratings top ten for all but its final season) was undoubtedly its cast.

Netflix revealed the first footage from Guillermo del Toro’s passion project, “Frankenstein,” which he wrote, directed and produced. And it is a doozy.
As part of Wednesday’s Next on Netflix event in Los Angeles, the streaming giant previewed a little more than two minutes of footage from the upcoming movie, which will debut this November. The footage opens with Dr. Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) attempting to reanimate a partial corpse in an operating theater. A bunch of Victorian doctors tut-tut his experiment, which involves a torso and head (it almost looks like a classic automaton).
Christoph Waltz shows up saying that he will give the frazzled young doctor unlimited resources, and we see Frankenstein surveying a battlefield, picking out parts. (There is a particularly grisly moment where we see the doctor slicing through muscle like it’s roast beef.) There are glimpses of the operating table and the creature,...

A handful of famous actors, including Michael J. Fox, turned down the chance to play Sam Wheat in 1990’s Ghost opposite Demi Moore before Patrick Swayze landed his career-changing role. Fox later told Whoopi Goldberg he made a huge mistake by passing on the movie — “I’m a fucking idiot.”
Paramount turned to other actors as well, reports Far Out. Harrison Ford. Tom Hanks. Kevin Bacon. Even Paul Hogan, hot of Crocodile Dundee, was considered. But one guy who never got a shot? The studio’s biggest movie star: Eddie Murphy. The comedian’s films brought in more than $1.3 billion during the 1980s.
“I deserved for them to come to me first,” Murphy says in the book Off the Record, excerpted by Newsweek in 2007. “That’s how you treat your biggest star. You give him the opportunity to say he’s not interested. I would have been interested in doing Ghost.

George R.R. Martin is not shy about sharing his thoughts on adaptations of his work. The author has previously shared his discontent with "House of the Dragon" and the changes made to the source material — specifically the Blood and Cheese sequence and the erasure of a book character with big repercussions for the larger story.
But you know what show has Martin giddy with excitement? "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." The upcoming "Game of Thrones" spin-off is based on Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg" novellas, which tale the story of Ser Duncan "Dunk" the Tall, a hedge knight, and his squire, Egg (who is revealed to be Prince Aegon Targaryen). The show takes place 90 years before the events of the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire.

This isn’t the way things were supposed to go for Pamela Anderson. As the 2020s dawned, she could reflect on a noteworthy career, from Playboy Playmate of the Month in February 1990 to playing Lisa the Tool Time Girl on Home Improvement to playing pin-up C.J. Parker on 110 episodes of Baywatch from 1992 to 1997 to starring in the Cannes-premiering feature Barb Wire (1996) to having another long series run as the head of an elite bodyguard agency on V.I.P. from 1998 to 2002. That’s all besides being a tabloid queen during her tumultuous 1990s marriage to Mötley Crüe cofounder Tommy Lee.
Anderson recognized she had done pretty well for someone who grew up in a small town on Vancouver Island. But at the same time, she felt unfulfilled.

Cinematographer Auden Bui has been building up to making her feature directorial debut by taking the helm of several short films – and now, Deadline has broken the news that Bui will be entering the feature world by directing a psychological thriller called Kodak SuperXX, which is set to star Kelly Marie Tran (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) and David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil).
Scripted by Tony Rettenmaier (They Cloned Tyrone), Kodak SuperXX will be “set against an atmospheric Los Angeles.” The story follows Linh (Tran), a quiet woman whose solitary life revolves around her work as a darkroom developer at one of the city’s last boutique photo labs. Her quiet existence takes a paranoid turn when she becomes entangled with a mysterious stranger (Dastmalchian), whose photographs reveal a dark secret. The list of people who’ve received four nominations for the same film is extremely short, basically those names and maybe one or two more.
On Thursday, Anora‘s Sean Baker added his name to it. The filmmaker pulled off that rare hat trick-plus-one — he landed noms for director, picture, original screenplay and editing.
“It’s surreal, a lot of those are my heroes,” Baker said when The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him Thursday about the feat. “Especially since I thought I was making a movie whose subject matter was out of fashion,” he said, chuckling slightly as he described his stripper-themed action dramedy.
Star Mikey Madison called Baker “one of a kind” when asked about him Thursday. Oscar-wise, that statement is not exactly true. But it’s not far off.

When we discuss Hollywood flops, it's important to stress that the term "flop" has nothing to do with the quality of the film. It's strictly about the movie's extreme financial failure. Francis Ford Coppola's "One from the Heart" was a massive flop, but, over 40 years later, it's now considered by many to be an artistic triumph (something to keep in mind as we move further away from the wipeout of 2024's "Megalopolis"). Brian De Palma's "Casualties of War" was a costly bomb for the legendary filmmaker, but the movie received rave reviews at the time and still stands as one of the greatest Vietnam War films ever made. And while Michael Lehmann's "Hudson Hawk" might've thrown a dent into Bruce Willis' commercial reputation, people with exquisite taste have come to recognize its anarchic genius.
When a non-franchise movie flops, my initial instinct is to find a way to stick up for it,...

Most years, their choices for the bottom rung of film are questionable, and they’ve nominated a classic or two over the years.

Seth MacFarlane may not care for The Godfather, but he insists that he doesn’t know what the hell Peter Griffin was talking about.
On May 14, 2006, a very special Family Guy episode aired that would change the way Letterboxd users and Film Twitter power players would talk about prestige cinema for years — once New Zealand invented Letterboxd and Twitter became more than just Jack Dorsey posting into the void by himself, of course. In “The Griffin Family History,” Peter, Meg, Lois, Stewie and Brian spend what they believe to be their last moments alive before drowning in the family’s panic room arguing about Francis Ford Coppola’s magnum opus, the 1972 mob epic The Godfather, and, as the water rises, Peter explains his distaste for the film in the most confusing terms possible.

Even if you’ve never seen one of Family Guy‘s 400+ episodes, there’s a good chance you already know that Peter Griffin did not care for The Godfather. In fact, he’d go so far as to say that Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 classic “insists upon itself.”
That’s because one of the show’s most iconic scenes — in which the Griffin family gets into a heated exchange about movies while the room slowly fills with water — remains one of the show’s most viral moments, still regularly shared online nearly two decades after the episode’s original airing.

The 45th Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) will be held on March 1, 2025, to recognize the worst films of 2024. The nominees were originally set to be announced on January 16, but due to wildfires in Southern California, the announcement was delayed several times, eventually being revealed on January 21.
The nominees were chosen by 1,202 members of the Golden Raspberry Foundation, including movie fans, critics, and journalists. This year, many comic book adaptations received nominations, such as ‘The Crow,’ ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ and ‘Kraven the Hunter.’
Several well-known actors, including Ariana DeBose, Cate Blanchett, and Joaquin Phoenix, were also mentioned, with Jon Voight getting a nod for his roles in four films. 2024 was really bad for superhero adaptations considering that the movies received eighteen nominations overall.

Meanwhile, Dakota Johnson and Lady Gaga have also been nominated for this infamous award. Scroll below for the nominations.
The first Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony was held in 1981, and to date, Sylvester Stallone is reportedly the most-awarded actor ever. He has received 12 Razzies. There are few awards shows more mean-spirited than the Razzie Awards, which each year join the awards season circus to ridicule the previous year’s most notable flops. 2024 gave the Razzies plenty of punching bags, as Joker: Folie a Deux, Megalopolis, and Madame Web were among the nominees for Worst Picture.
The other films rounding out the five Worst Picture nominees were video game adaptation Borderlands and Dennis Quaid vanity project/biopic Reagan. All five movies were also well-represented in additional categories including Worst Actor, Worst Actress and Worst Screen Combo.
Thanks to the brave heroes who vote for the Razzies, Jack Black received two separate nominations — one for Worst Actor after playing Satan in the Paramount+ original film Dear Santa, and one for Worst Supporting Actor as the voice of Claptrap in Borderlands. As this year's awards season gets underway, Hollywood prepares to celebrate the very best - and worst - that 2024 had to offer.
The Academy Award nominations were recently delayed due to the California wildfires, but we do have the nominations for the Golden Raspberry Awards, and several superhero/comic book-based movies were "honored" in a number of categories.
Not too surprisingly, Warner Bros.' Joker sequel picked up the most nominations, with stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga up for Worst Actor, Todd Phillips for Worst Director, and more. Sony Pictures' Madame Web was a close second with noms in six categories, tied with Megalopolis and Reagan.
Lionsgate's ill-fated The Crow reboot picked up two.
Nominees were chosen were via emailed ballots to 1,202 Razzie members from 49 States and about two dozen foreign countries who chose five top contenders in each of nine categories.

The Razzie Awards spread the “wealth” this year, with five movies receiving a leading six nominations apiece, including in the unfortunate Worst Picture race: Borderlands, Joker: Folie à Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan. Meanwhile, Unfrosted received four bids, while The Crow nabbed two.
“At the dawn of a dark era, the 45th Razzies remain ready to pounce,” declared the organization, which announced its bids one day after the inauguration of the 47th president and two days before the 2025 Oscars nominations. Fun fact: the ultimate “winners” of these categories will take home a “$4.97 gold spray-painted statuette.”
Oscar winners nominated for Golden Raspberries this year include Joaquin Pheonix (Joker: Folie à Deux), Cate Blanchett (Borderlands), Lady Gaga (Joker: Folie à Deux), Ariana DeBose (Argylle and Kraven the Hunter), and Jon Voight.

This year’s Academy Award nominations are set to be announced Thursday, after being delayed due to the devastating Los Angeles fires. As such, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards got to get ahead of the Oscars on Tuesday with their own crop of nominees, highlighting what its members believe to be the worst in film for 2024. “Joker: Folie à Deux” leads the field with seven nominations, while “Madame Web,” “Megalopolis,” “Borderlands” and “Reagan” are close behind with six nods apiece.
For “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the musical sequel to Todd Phillips’ Oscar-nominated DC Comics crime film “Joker,” landed nods in worst picture, director, screenplay and prequel, remake, rip-off or sequel. Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are both up for worst actress and worst actor, respectively, as well as worst screen combo. All the stars are here! It’s that magical time of year when the biggest bombs in Hollywood gather to celebrate mediocrity at the Razzie Awards! This year’s presentation of The Golden Razzies finds multiple flops joining hands in the battle to escape accolades as the worst movies and performances of the year, including Joker: Folie a Deux, Madame Web, Megalopolis, Borderlands, and Reagan.
Borderlands, Megalopolis, Madame Web, Joker: Folie a Deux, and Reagan earned six nominations apiece, forming a Megazord of misguided executions on the silver screen. Not far behind are Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted and The Crow swooping in with four nominations and two nominations, respectively. Aw, c’mon! The Crow wasn’t that bad! It was a tad uninspired, but at least they didn’t try to remake the original full-stop. Who’s with me? Bueller? Bueller? Oh, well.

It’s that time of year again, when Hollywood celebrates the year’s best motion pictures and performances and such. It’s also when the Razzie Awards turns all that on its ear.
In the running for Worst Picture at the 45th Golden Raspberry Awards — watch a video about them above — are vidgame adaptation Borderlands, musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux, Marvel’s Madame Web, Freancis Ford Coppola’s passion project Megalopolis and presidential biopic Reagan.
Not coincidentally, all five are tied with six Razzie noms apiece. Those films’ helmers also are up for the Director “prize,” except for Reagan‘s Sean McNamara; Jerry Seinfeld took that fifth slot for his Pop Tarts comedy Unfrosted. The erstwhile sitcom king also is up for Worst Actor.

Razzie Awards: ‘Joker 2’ Tops Nominations; ‘Madame Web,’ ‘Megalopolis,’ ‘Reagan’ Also Among Nominees

Joker: Folie à Deux leads the Razzie Awards noms, which recognize the worst movies and performances of the year, with a total of seven mentions.
Borderlands, Madame Web, Megalopolis and Reagan followed with six noms apiece, it was announced Tuesday. Unfrosted landed with four noms, while The Crow nabbed two noms.
Among the actors receiving mentions were Joaquin Phoenix, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga and Jon Voight, one of President Donald Trump’s newly appointed “Ambassadors to Hollywood,” who was nominated for his performances in a “near record” four films in one year.
Organizers joked that the worst picture nominees will compete for a “$4.97 gold spray-painted” statuette and shared their thoughts on each of the films in contention (see below).

The average moviegoer might be eager to watch another chapter in their favorite franchise, but when it comes to the most esteemed awards ceremony in the land, sequels struggle to get much major attention at the Oscars. Throughout its 96 ceremonies so gar, nine direct sequels have been nominated for Best Picture, only two of which have been fortunate enough to go home with the shiny golden man. The first win was in 1975 when Francis Ford Coppola explored two different generations of the Corleone family in "The Godfather Part II." The second wouldn't come until 2004 when the Academy praised Peter Jackson's first fond farewell to Middle-earth and the best of the "Lord and the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

"Star Wars" is full of fascinating, enigmatic villains, most of them get barely any dialogue, let alone their background or backstory explained — in the movies at least. Whether it's Darth Vader being introduced as just a tall, menacing guy clad in dark, robotic armor, or Boba Fett's silent, striking suit of armor, these antagonists work because of how little we know of them, and how memorable their designs are.
This is especially true in the prequel trilogy, where we get characters like Darth Maul, who is just evil incarnate, a perfect design. Though perhaps not as well-liked, General Grievous' own character design is just as effective. He's a villain who's instantly memorable and striking, his cybernetic exterior and biological organs making him rather mysterious and alluring.
Grievous, like most things "Star Wars," went through many changes before making his debut, with George Lucas even briefly considering making the character Darth Maul in disguise.

While The Godfather contains many villainous figures, the lack of one true main antagonist remains a hallmark of Francis Ford Coppola's genre-defining gangster movie. Since releasing in 1972, The Godfather's reputation has aged like a fine Sicilian wine, and the first chapter of the Corleone family trilogy continues to be considered a leading contender when debating the greatest movies ever made. That same debate often yields the line "a movie is only as good as its villain," and that pearl of wisdom has been proven right on many occasions.
Heath Ledger's Joker was crucial to The Dark Knight, Ralph Fiennes' Amon Göth cut an unforgettably sinister presence in Schindler's List, and the Good and Ugly would have been a lot less interesting without the Bad. Curiously, The Godfather stands apart. Plenty of nefarious figures are littered throughout the story, but pinning down one main villain from The Godfather's cast is far from straightforward.

VFX artists have a mixed response to the CGI in Megalopolis. The 2024 film was a longtime passion project for acclaimed filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, whose creative vision for the movie began in the late 1970s. Despite finally coming to fruition and being released in 2024 after spending decades in development, this was not the end of the movie's challenges, as Megalopolis' production and marketing became controversial. There were many reports of a troubled set, including allegations against Coppola for kissing extras without their consent.
It was confirmed that Coppola fired Megalopolis' art department due to a disagreement about creative approach and being unable to compromise on how to move forward. Controversy continued in marketing when a Megalopolis trailer featured quotes from reviews of previous Coppola movies, only for the quotes to later be revealed as fake. David Lynch as a man and creative force is impossible to describe, as he's an enigma wrapped in cosmic brilliance that we can only pretend we were worthy enough to understand. The legend departed our mortal plane at the age of 78, leaving a legacy of inimitable cinematic, television, and storytelling achievements, where even his "worst" film is better than the average filmmaker's very best. His 2007 film "David Lynch Cooks Quinoa" is one of the most captivating works of short-form filmmaking, and it's legitimately just a video of the famed director doing exactly as the title says — cooking quinoa.
He's a creative force so singular and unique that his work helped us make sense of our own existence. His auteur perspective on the world around us was so distinct that we had to invent the term "Lynchian" before we could even dare attempt to wrap our heads around it. He inspired...

The Outsiders was bursting with future star power, including Ralph Macchio, when it was released in 1983. Alongside Macchio, the Francis Ford Coppola-directed film starred a slew of major Hollywood actors including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, and Diane Lane. The Outsiders is based on the seminal 1967 novel by S.E. Hinton, and follows two gangs of young people — the poor greasers and the more wealthy Socs — as they fight for dominance in Tulsa, Oklahoma during the 1960s.
The film was a box office success, earning over $25 million against a $10 million budget (via Box Office Mojo) and critical acclaim. In the years since its release, The Outsiders spawned both a 1990 sequel TV series and a Tony Award-winning 2023 Broadway musical. The 1983 movie's impact also extends to its stars, as just one year after its release, Ralph Macchio would go on to play Daniel Larusso in 1984's The Karate Kid.

Exclusive: If there’s one takeaway from the holiday box office season, audiences couldn’t quit Focus Features’ period gothic horror movie Nosferatu.
The Robert Eggers-directed title is now the Universal specialty label’s second highest-grossing release at the domestic box office at $84.4 million, overtaking 2005’s three-time Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain ($83M) and ranking behind the studio’s top-grossing title ever, 2019’s Downton Abbey ($96.8M). On a global basis, Nosferatu ranks as Focus’ seventh highest-grossing title with north of $142M worldwide.
Also noteworthy, Nosferatu is reaching its great heights at the B.O. sans award noms from the Golden Globes or Oscars (which have yet to be announced) or festival buzz; such lynchpins were in part responsible for the breakout success of 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee’s gay-themed Western.
Focus also has bragging rights in that Nosferatu beats the domestic haul of any title, including horror, when compared with its specialty rival A24.
