Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 has many iconic scenes that have had a lasting impact. None, however, have been as timeless and memorable as the train scene. From fighting Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock on a moving train to stopping the said train and an entire train car full of people hiding Spider-Man’s identity, it is safe to say the scene left an impact. It has become ingrained in the character’s history, and there have been many attempts to recreate it.

Even though the entire sequence was less than ten minutes long, the preparation and thought that went into it are truly impressive. Other than the director, it is impressive just how many hands were involved in making it. Here is an in-depth background on how the scene was shot.

James Cameron is currently one of the highest-rated filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, having helmed fan-favorite masterpieces like Titanic and 1986’s Aliens. But he wasn’t always this famous, nor were his outstanding directing skills garnering interest from audiences for at least a few years after he kicked off his directorial debut with Xenogenesis in 1978.

That said, besides The Terminator film series, what actually made him super famous in the industry was his brilliantly helmed Avatar saga, which quite literally surpassed the Star Wars lore by flying colors. But that wasn’t Cameron’s first attempt at outshining George Lucas’ universe, because the first attempt came nearly three decades earlier in 1980 through one of Cameron’s poorly-rated films.

Released in theaters on May 2, 2022, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness marked Sam Raimi's triumphant return to the world of superhero cinema after previously helming Tob Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy.
The film was generally praised by fans and critics alike, on its way to grossing $955.8 million at the global box office.
However, a new report from Forbes raises questions about whether the film was profitable, considering its massive budget.
Previously, it was thought that Disney/Marvel spent $294M to produce the film, however, tax filings that Disney is required to disclose for productions filmed in the U.K. have revealed that Marvel spent £331.9 million or $414.9 million on the Doctor Strange sequel.
Given that box office revenue is split 50/50, Marvel pocketed ~$477.9 million after sharing ticket sales with theater owners, and that doesn't include what Marvel spent on P&a costs.

My Hero Academia is reaching its climax, with Izuku Midoriya currently busy fighting Tomura Shigaraki and All for One. It has been one of the most stand-out anime of the modern generation, with the story improving with every arc. Izuku Midoriya’s journey from being quirkless to inheriting the most powerful quirk and fighting the evils has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride.
Kohei Horikoshi has etched his name as one of the most popular manga artists of the modern generation. One of the best things about him is that he does not bind himself to the Japanese culture and often explores Western culture. He takes inspiration from American superheroes. During an interview, he mentioned a web-crawler who reminds him of Son Goku.

When it comes to picking the definitive live-action Spider-Man, different people will choose different versions, as all three of them are iconic in their own right. But it’s important to note that out of them all, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man duology remains the most divisive, especially The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which failed to make it big upon its release.
However, despite its issues, The Amazing Spider-Man excelled in one aspect compared to Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s films, and it’s Peter Parker’s love interest.

It’s official. Galactus is coming to the MCU.
After months of speculation, Marvel officially announced that they’ve found their Galactus. Ralph Ineson, a Game of Thrones veteran known for standout supporting roles in The Witch and The Green Knight, will portray the Devourer of Worlds. Ineson’s casting comes on the heels of other compelling announcements for its upcoming film The Fantastic Four, including Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich. Marvel hasn’t yet disclosed which characters those two are playing, but the smart money has Hauser down for the Mole Man. Malkovich could fit a number of characters, including minor baddies Puppet Master or Diablo, including just a grouchy official. Heck, maybe he’ll finally get to play a version of the Vulture, as he was slated to do in Sam Raimi’s abandoned Spider-Man 4!
While any of those baddies would be fun, the Galactus casting deserves the most attention.

The idyllic countryside in the South of France is all that the veteran Oscar-nominee John Malkovich needs to be content in life. But Hollywood has other plans for the eccentric star, especially when it comes to Sony, Marvel, and Spider-Man. The interlinked fate of these 3 problematic entities has not only become a troublesome hurdle for the studios but poses a great risk to the future of the IP.
However, with the arrival of billion-dollar contracts and deafening audience excitement, Sony and Marvel signed a treatise to secure and exploit Spider-Man to their mutual benefit. MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, Sony’s rebooted Spider-Man universe with Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web, and its animated Spider-Verse trilogy are a product of this shared dream.

New to Streaming: La Chimera, Let It Be, The Last Stop in Yuma County, Kim’s Video, The Dry 2 & More
Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher)
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny perhaps garnered more press out of Cannes, another selection involving archaeologists and tomb raiders will have a longer shelf life. Alice Rohrwacher’s latest feature La Chimera ranked quite highly on our top 50 films of 2023 list for good reason. It’s a dreamy, magical odyssey in which the Italian director whisks viewers away with the kind of transportive vision she’s exuded in all her features thus far.
Where to Stream: VOD
Eileen (William Oldroyd)

First things first: Yes, Francis Galluppi is going to be directing a new movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise. And no, he can’t tell you anything about it. He can, however, prove his bona fides as a horror and suspense fan in our Zoom interview by pointing to the “Evil Dead” poster in his office and the “three Necronomicons on my desk.”
Galluppi landed the coveted gig after Sam Raimi saw Galluppi’s feature film debut, “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” the acclaimed thriller that arrives in theaters and on digital this week. Shot in 20 days on a budget of “about a million” dollars, the film is set almost entirely at road stop diner in an unspecified past era where traveling salesmen and rotary phones are still prevalent. Back in 2009, John Malkovich was set to join the Marvel universe as Vulture in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4. As we know, that project was scrapped, but the actor will be getting a second chance at Marvel fame as Deadline reports that John Malkovich has joined the cast of The Fantastic Four.
Exactly who Malkovich will be playing in The Fantastic Four is being kept under wraps, but he joins a cast which includes Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka The Thing, Julia Garner as the Shalla-Bal version of the Silver Surfer, and Paul Walter Hauser in an undisclosed role.

“You’d be a good mom someday, Auntie Beth. You know how to lie to kids.”
In 1981, visionary director Sam Raimi unleashed The Evil Dead and changed horror forever. This tentpole franchise not only popularized the “cabin in the woods” subgenre but remains one of the most creative and bloody sagas in the genre’s history. We first meet the Kandarian Demon in the remote woods, attacking Ash (Bruce Campbell) and his ill-fated friends. But the evil dead know no bounds and cannot be contained by geographic location. Lee Cronin’s 2023 sequel Evil Dead Rise sees the Necronomicon reemerge from the bowels of an LA high rise. Rather than a group of college coeds (and some medieval knights), this Kandarian iteration squares off against an unsuspecting mom and her likeable family. It’s the perfect film for Horror Movie Mothers Day as the terrifying deadites bring gory destruction instead of chocolates and a corsage.

MCU has quite a slate of movies coming up, even though Marvel Studios has hit a rough patch with the last couple of projects. There have been talks about releasing fewer projects, as fans are definitely becoming tired of shows and movies of lower quality; still, if one character always managed to drag people to movies, it’s Spider-Man, by far the most profitable Marvel franchise, no matter the product you’re looking at.
Several months ago it was confirmed that ‘Spider-Man 4’ is in active development, at first rumors were circulating that Watts would return to direct it, but he ultimately moved on to other projects, just like Drew Goddard and Justin Lin.
Now the latest rumors pointed in the direction of Sam Raimi directing the upcoming MCU installment, and according to MyTimeToShineHello, the studio is also interested in James Wan.

The MCU has an extensive lineup of upcoming movies, despite recent bumps in quality. Discussions about reducing output have emerged due to fan fatigue with lower-quality content. However, Spider-Man remains a consistently lucrative franchise, drawing audiences regardless of format.

The latest rumors suggest that Sam Raimi is in talks to direct the next MCU installment. Additionally, according to MyTimeToShineHello, the studio is eyeing James Wan for the project.

Years before Sam Raimi’s ground-breaking Spider-Man trilogy made it to the big screen and forever revolutionized the comic book superhero genre, there were several other iterations of the tale with several other filmmakers and actors associated with the project. One of them was James Cameron, who was eager to have a more mature and grounded take on the web-slinger’s live-action debut film.

Associated and contacted by Carolco Pictures, Cameron originally wanted Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead before the studio went bankrupt. However, if the filmmaker’s version of the movie had made it through, we would have gotten Spider-Man fighting two different Marvel villains in his first film.

As Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios continue their search for a director to take over from Jon Watts on Spider-Man 4, a new rumor is claiming that both studios may be in agreement on a filmmaker to take the helm of the highly-anticipated No Way Home sequel.

Avengers 5 was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, only for the movie to lose that shortly after Marvel Studios decided to take the focus off Kang the Conqueror (a result of the mixed response to Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and Jonathan Majors' legal troubles).

Director Jon Watts stepped up to direct the three solo Tom Holland Spider-Man films that were wildly successful at the box office. The Home-trilogy was a perfect three-part story for Holland’s Spider-Man as he evolved from a young bubbly teenager to learning his responsibilities and dealing with a profound loss.

Watts delivered a much bigger and character-driven film with the trilogy than previous Spider-Man films. Take a look at actress Kirsten Dunst, aka 'Mary Jane Watson' in director Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy and the star of the new feature “Civil War”, posing for the Spring 2024 edition of “S” magazine, photographed by Danielle Levitt:

At the age of twelve, Dunst gained widespread recognition as vampire 'Claudia' in 'Interview with the Vampire' (1994), a role for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. She appeared in "Little Women" the same year and in "Jumanji" the following year.
After a recurring role in the NBC medical drama "ER" (1996–97) as 'Charlie Chemingo' and co-starring in films such as "Wag the Dog" (1997), "Small Soldiers" (1998) and "The Virgin Suicides" (1999), Dunst transitioned into romantic comedies and comedy-dramas, starring in "Drop Dead Gorgeous" (1999), "Bring It On...

The Amazing Spider-Man opened in 466 theaters and earned $510,000. That's quite a drop from Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3. It might also make Sony think twice about ever making The Amazing Spider-Man 3, particularly if there's likely to be greater interest in Spider-Man 4!
This is still a strong result as it made a $1,100 average per theater.
Despite The Amazing Spider-Man not performing as well as its predecessors, Garfield remains incredibly popular. The reboot simply isn't considered a classic, and these numbers should take nothing away from what the actor brought to the table as Peter Parker.

So far, talking about the MCU specifically, Spider-Man has three standalone movies and a fourth on the way. This was confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal, who confirmed that the work on the sequel has been ongoing.
We know that the upcoming still doesn’t have a director attached to it, Watts gave up on the sequel movies, focusing on other projects but several names have been mentioned. Drew Goddard, Justin Lin, and Sam Raimi...

The MCU has a lineup of upcoming movies, despite Marvel Studios facing challenges with recent projects. There’s been discussion about reducing the number of releases, as fans are growing weary of lower-quality shows and films. However, Spider-Man remains a consistent draw for audiences, being the most profitable Marvel franchise across various media.
In the MCU, Spider-Man has already starred in three standalone movies, with a fourth installment confirmed several months ago by producer Amy Pascal. She verified that work on the sequel has been in progress.
The upcoming sequel still lacks a director, as Jon Watts has moved on from the franchise to focus on other projects. However, several names have been floated around, including Drew Goddard, Justin Lin, and Sam Raimi. None of these names have been officially confirmed, especially considering that Goddard and Justin Lin are also involved in other significant projects.

In the many Spider-Man films that have come out over the years, there is one that would take the award for being the most emotional. Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 absolutely wrecked fans of the character. On top of the exceptional acting, cast, and storyline, the final act of the movie was emotional, to say the least.
Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man
Few scenes in the MCU have had an effect as great as Gwen Stacy’s death in the final scenes of the film. The performance of the actors, the implication, and the significance of it have lasted to this very date. It is safe to say that no one was able to hold back their tears when they first saw the scene, and it would seem that Garfield is one of them.

Superhero movies aren't for everyone. There are many actors who have donned capes, cowls, and spandex, later admitting that they didn't enjoy the experience and wouldn't do it again.
However, only a small handful of performers have returned to roles they hated.
Some did so because they were contractually obliged. Others, meanwhile, wanted a second chance or were offered enough money to swallow their pride. Then, there were those who were seemingly gluttons for punishment and didn't know when to say "no." All of them are featured here.

When Marvel Studios enlisted Jon Watts to direct Spider-Man: Homecoming, he was a relative unknown. The filmmaker had helmed the low-budget Clown and Cop Car, but neither of those necessarily suggested he was a good fit to bring the wall-crawler into the MCU.
Like Sam Raimi and Marc Webb before him, Watts proved his detractors wrong by delivering a movie which scored glowing reviews and a spectacular $880.2 million at the worldwide box office.
Spider-Man: Far From Home followed two years later and earned over $1.1 billion, and when Spider-Man: No Way Home eventually swung into theaters, it grossed a jaw-dropping $1.9 billion.
After devoting several years of his life to Spider-Man, Watts decided he needed a break from the MCU and gave up the chance to next take charge of The Fantastic Four. He's since shifted focus to upcoming Star Wars TV series, Skeleton Crew, and a new director will be brought on board for Spider-Man 4.

Romancing the Mummy.
After concluding April with discussions of Ciarán Foy’s Eli (listen), a horror version of The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, and the pseudo-sequel to Videodrome in David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (listen), we’re kicking off May with a revisit to one of our favorite years for cinema: 1999! The film we’ve selected is Stephen Sommer‘s action-adventure-horror-romantic-comedy The Mummy!
In the film, adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) travels to Hamunaptra, the City of the Dead, with librarian Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan (Rachel Weisz) and her older brother Jonathan (John Hannah). While there, they accidentally awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest-turned-invincible mummy, and must stop him before he sacrifices Evy in an attempt to resurrect his former lover (Patricia Velásquez).

New footage for Deadpool & Wolverine has hit the web, thanks to an IMAX exclusive trailer, which seemingly draws a connection to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Set to be the next major leap in MCU’s multiversal saga, it’s safe to assume that the upcoming threequel will feature a plethora of cameos and homages to other Marvel properties under Disney’s umbrella.
While it’ll be interesting to see if Tobey Maguire will end up being one of the major Marvel stars to appear in Deadpool 3, the new trailer does seem to incorporate reference to his iconic trilogy.

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace returned to theaters this weekend to celebrate both May The Fourth and the 1999 movie's 25th anniversary.
Despite receiving largely negative reviews from longtime Star Wars fans when it originally hit the big screen, the movie has already made upwards of $1 billion worldwide.
Despite often being dubbed the "worst" Star Wars movie - Attack of the Clones and The Rise of Skywalker would like a word - The Phantom Menace opened at #2 this weekend with an impressive $8.1 million at the North American box office.
Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt's The Fall Guy topped it, but George Lucas' Episode I beat the likes of Challengers, Civil War, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Tarot to earn that second place.
While this is a relatively quiet weekend at the box office, numbers like these put The Phantom Menace among the biggest re-releases ever. For context, while...

Willem Dafoe has been synonymous with the Green Goblin after starring as the character in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. The actor was the primary antagonist in the first film and made small cameos in subsequent films. He fully returned to the role in the MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw him as the primary antagonist again.
While Dafoe is perfect as the Green Goblin, many fans have also hoped to see him in other villainous roles, primarily the Joker. However, fans got a glimpse of what he might have been like if he played Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2 instead of Alfred Molina in a rare behind-the-scenes footage from the Raimi directorial.

Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man franchise was the advent of superhero movies of the current generation. It has been exactly 17 years since the third movie in the trilogy was released, which was the conclusion of a story beloved by many. While the second installment in the trilogy is considered the best, the third one, unfortunately, did not receive similar treatment either from critics or the audience. Screenwriter Alvin Sargent was the man behind the script for the third movie, and he had a pretty good idea on how to move forward.
Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man
Spider-Man 3 ended up being a mixture of too many plots and too many characters. From Harry Osborne to Sandman to Venom, the movie had too many villains and too little time to deal with them properly. This is why Sargent thought of splitting the story into two parts – Spider-Man 3 & 4 – and tell...

Spider-Man 4 is a film that a lot of fans are looking forward to, especially after where No Way Home left Peter Parker. He was wiped from the memory of everyone who knew him, leaving him without any friends or family. This Peter Parker essentially had to start from scratch, and will probably be rubbing shoulders with street-level vigilantes like Daredevil and The Punisher, before he gets to become a part of anything like the Avengers.

However, despite most of the plotlines of the film being wrapped up, there are certain exciting threads that fans want to see explored in future installments of the franchise. (Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man." These were the words uttered by former Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton after an investor meeting in November 2013. Those words would become the undoing of the franchise solely under Sony's stewardship, with 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" serving as the nail in the coffin. With the benefit of hindsight, we might be looking at the most outright financially successful franchise-killer in cinema history.
The Andrew Garfield-led "Spider-Man" films remain a tragic mixed bag. There are those who adore Garfield as Marvel's famed webslinger. There are many others who can't get past the messy direction the films themselves wandered down -- particularly this sequel we're talking about today.

Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.
The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.
Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

Agatha Christie’s mysterious plots have never quite left the cinematic world, however hard it seems to imagine after the modern and flamboyant image of Hercule Poirot has reappeared with Kenneth Branagh’s performances.
And even though now it’s difficult to see anyone else behind this role after Murder on the Oriented Express hit cinemas in 2017 and then was followed by two more films, Hercule Poirot had one more brilliant interpretation years ago — and with the MCU’s actor in the leading role.
Alfred Molina may have got most of its fame from portraying Dr Octopus, the superhero’s rival in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, but back in 2001 he turned to a very different role. In fact, the modernized look of Hercule Poirot is not Kenneth Branagh’s merit, but rather is what Molina has transformed the character into.

Alfred Molina has gone viral for sharing an emotional story to Vanity Fair about his father, who never vocally supported his son’s acting career. Molina once had the chance to become the manager of a restaurant for a higher salary. He turned it down to pursue the arts, which baffled his father. This was long before Molina became a Tony and BAFTA-nominated actor, plus an iconic movie villain thanks to Doctor Octopus in Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2.”

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy still remains one of the most iconic comic book movie trilogies of all time, since it introduced a plethora of villains long before MCU was a thing. One of those villains was Molina’s Doc Ock.
Molina portrayed the character’s arc flawlessly, transitioning from a brilliant scientist to a mind-controlled villain and ultimately becoming a genuine hero. Molina excelled in both emotional and action-packed scenes, adding depth to the character of Doc Ock and making him one of Spider-Man’s most compelling movie villains.
Now in his recent interview with Vanity Fair, Molina revealed that he was surprised he was asked to reprise his role. He was a bit worried however due to his advanced age, but Pascal and Watts reassured him they had the technology to “fix it.”

Candyman 3: Day of the Dead takes a fairly offensive stab at the Mexican holiday, while Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III doesn’t live up to the pre-release marketing hype about it being ‘banned’ and ‘the most controversial movie ever made’. It was neither. Even Scream 3, despite not necessarily being bad per se, is a low point considering how strong the first two movies are. On the flip side though, George Romero’s Day of the Dead is a solid follow-up to both Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, while Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead threequel Army of Darkness is a total blast. So, after Hostel: Part II grossed significantly less than the hit opening chapter, did that put any notions...

Arachnophobes are in for a bit of a rough time, because streaming platforms and cinemas will be positively crawling with spider-based monster movies before you know it. Well, two, anyway. First up is French spider-thriller Infested (out now on Shudder), with Australian creature feature Sting creeping into cinemas on May 31st.
Also known as Vermines, Infested is the feature debut of French director Sebastien Vanicek. Set in present-day Paris, the film centres on hustler Kaleb (Theo Christine), who shares a flat with his sister Manon (Lisa Nyarko) in a run-down apartment building that’s home to several other multicultural tenants.

The original Spider-Man films could’ve changed the career of one Yellowstone star but he chose to turn down the offer. Tobey Maguire’s Spidey role was reportedly first offered to Wes Bentley, who now plays the despicable Jamie Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama. Bentley revealed that he rejected the offer since the comic book movies were not performing well at the time, especially with the two subpar Batman movies from Joel Schumacher.
Wes Bentley opened up about his Yellowstone role and the role that he missed out on
Before he turned down the Spider-Man role, Bentley became a promising young star with his role as Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. Bentley went on to star in other movies like The Hunger Games, Interstellar, and Mission: Impossible 6.

There are any number of actors who could have taken on the role of Dr. Otto Octavius in 2004's Spider-Man 2, but Sam Raimi made a somewhat unlikely choice with Alfred Molina. However, it would prove to absolutely be the right one.
The actor made Doctor Octopus his own and, even two decades later, his Doc Ock is still considered one of the best comic book supervillains to ever grace the screen.
In a recent interview, Molina reflected on his career and admitted he was surprised to be considered seeing as he was best known at the time for his roles in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Frida.
"It was a big surprise to me, because it's not the kind of movie that I imagined myself to be qualified for. You always think of these big action films as [casting] physical types, and I've definitely never been that.

Alfred Molina’s career seems to be built on his weird onscreen relationship with spiders. The actor is best known for playing the role of Dr. Otto Octavius / Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2 and also reprised it in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Molina’s debut film was the first entry in the Indiana Jones franchise.
Alfred Molina made his film debut with Raiders of the Lost Ark
In Raiders of the Lost Ark, Molina has a small role where he is forced to tend to a swarm of tarantulas while helping Indiana Jones. However, given the story behind the filming of the scene, which used real spiders, Molina’s dedication to his craft despite the small screen time he received in the film is commendable. Here is why Alfred Molina’s Raiders of the Lost Ark role deserves applause even after 43 years.
