This is Day 78 of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
It was everything everywhere all at once Thursday in New York City: Striking actors getting ready for contract talks were joined by writers who have just wrapped up theirs at a rally in Manhattan that also highlighted Asian American Pacific Islander culture in film and television.
On the eve of the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated by Asian communities worldwide, about 200 people gathered outside the Manhattan offices of Warner Bros. Discovery for pickets and speeches that marked the official end of one strike against the major studios and the continuation of another whose end might be in sight.
Speakers including Joel de la Fuente of Hemlock Grove, Perry Yung of The Knick, Celia Au of Wu Assassins and Ivory Aquino of When We Rise hailed the growing visibility of Asian-Americans onscreen and said that their strike demands — including sustainable wages and limits on the use...

For many playwrights, film and television work has historically served as a supplement to their income from the theater world. But in recent years, writers say, studios have begun to poke holes in that safety net, leaving some stage scribes as frustrated and angry as their screenwriting colleagues.
“TV really seemed like a way to have more stability, to be able to just have a middle-class life doing the thing I love, get health insurance, support my family,” 72 miles to go … playwright Hilary Bettis said Wednesday outside Netflix’s Union Square offices in New York. “And now it feels like the rug is being pulled out from under us.”

It’s Day 5 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 78 of the WGA strike.
Writers and actors on strike simultaneously for the first time in more than 60 years fanned out across Manhattan on Tuesday morning with renewed demands for better pay, more job security and limits on the use of artificial intelligence in film and television.
The Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA ran picket lines at four locations near the offices of NBCUniversal, Paramount, Amazon, HBO, Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery. WGA marchers said they welcomed SAG-AFTRA members joining them on strike as of Friday, after months of backing the Writers Guild in its dispute with the major film and television production companies.
“It does feel different,” writer, comedian and WGA East member Josh Gondelman said outside NBCUniversal headquarters at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. “It’s really heartening to have this infusion of energy and the same righteous anger out on the lines that we had.

Dun-dun! You really can’t stop the Law & Order franchise. Since the very first episode of the flagship series back in 1990, Law & Order has kept on trucking in one form or another. The franchise will now be heading to Canada as Citytv has ordered Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.
The first season of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent will consist of ten episodes and will premiere in Spring 2024. As you might guess from the title, this spinoff series will take its lead from Law & Order: Criminal Intent, the third series in the Law & Order franchise. The original Criminal Intent series ran for ten seasons and starred Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe.

Canada has crime, too, eh? Apparently, according to the producers of the upcoming series Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent. The series’ debut season will premiere next spring, according to Variety, which reports that it will follow a group of detectives investigating high-profile crimes (murders, abductions, bigtime robberies) — just like the long-running police procedural set in New York City. Although the producers haven’t yet announced a cast, they’re promising the series will be distinctly maple-flavored, saying it “will showcase original Canadian stories written and produced by, and starring, Canadians.

The “Law & Order” universe is heading up north. Citytv has ordered the series “Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent,” Rogers Media announced on Monday. The pickup was revealed a day before Rogers Media’s virtual upfront presentation on June 6.
The Toronto iteration hails from Vancouver-based Lark Productions and Cameron Pictures Inc. in association with Citytv. The show is based on the “Law & Order” franchise created by Dick Wolf for Universal Television, which will distribute the series internationally.

Since Dick Wolf’s crime procedural Law & Order first premiered on NBC in 1990, television hasn’t spent a single moment without it or one of its many spinoffs.
Currently the Law & Order franchise has three programs running: the reboot of the flagship series (that just finished its second season and 22nd overall), Law & Order: Svu (which has been renewed for a 25th season), and Law & Order: Organized Crime (which has been renewed for a fourth season). Still with all that Law & Order in production (and that’s not even to mention the many re-runs on NBCUniversal’s cadre of cable channels), one former star of a Law & Order spinoff thinks there’s room for more.

Based on the 1958 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, David Koepp's 1999 film "Stir of Echoes" is one of the richer, more notably creepy ghost stories of its time. Set in a relatively cloistered, working-class suburb of Chicago, "Stir of Echoes" is about how years-old crimes can leave a mark on the entire community.
Kevin Bacon played a telephone lineman named Tom who, by the accounts of his wife (Kathryn Erbe) and wife' sister (Illeana Douglas), is pretty narrow-minded guy. At a neighborhood gathering, his wife's sister, as a party trick, decides to hypnotize Tom and subtly suggest that he should be "more open-minded." This suggestion seems to go awry, as when Tom awakens, he begins having ghostly visions of a teenage girl he doesn't recognize. Over the next few weeks, Tom receives further unusual impulses, most notably to dig, forcing him to tear up his own floorboards looking for ... something.

A middling movie with a must-see performance at its core, “The Good House” does something interesting with the notion of the unreliable narrator. As the unfortunately named Hildy Good, Sigourney Weaver brings deceptive self-confidence to the role of a small-town Realtor. We meet Hildy introducing a couple to the fictional New England fishing village of where the Good family has lived for so long, there’s talk of witches in their past. But Hildy can’t be trusted — not because her character is bad, but because she’s in denial.
“I can walk through a house once and know more about its occupants than a psychiatrist … could in a year of sessions,” Hildy boasts, addressing the audience directly. In truth, she’s not talking to us so much as she is rationalizing things to herself. The slyly insightful way Forbes (“Infinitely Polar Bear”) and Wolodarsky (who spent years writing for...

With the temps falling and the leaves slowly changing, lots of folks may be thinking of taking a trip to New England. Perhaps you could “hunker down” in a quaint old house by the water. Hey, if you’ve got the moola, maybe you could just buy the place, and make it your getaway, or permanent “digs”. Oh but most of us would have to do this vicariously, maybe at the movies. But who would you contact about such a fantasy home, say in a rustic lil’ village? And that is answered in this week’s star-powered release. Surely such a spot would be free of worries, “no hassles, no hustles”, right? Not really, as this film’s focus finds out. It seems you’re never safe from those “inner demons”, not even at The Good House.

Like many an entertaining addict, Hildy Good is a great storyteller, providing withering judgments about the people in her orbit amidst all the latest gossip. But like all addicts, the stories she tells always exonerate herself and her behavior — she’s just fine, it’s everyone else who’s messed up. And so what if she sneaks wine after having already been sent to rehab? She never drinks before 5pm, so it’s not like she’s an alcoholic or anything.

"It's okay to be angry and scared, and it's okay to ask for help." Roadside Attractions has revealed a trailer for an indie film called The Good House, which first premiered at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year. Based on Ann Leary's novel of the same name, this dramedy is about an aging New England realtor, named Hildy Good, who begins to unravel when she hooks up with an old flame of hers from New York. Kevin Kline co-stars as her old flame, while Sigourney Weaver takes on the role of Hildy. Igniting long-buried emotions and family secrets, Hildy is propelled toward a reckoning with the one person she has been avoiding for decades: herself. The cast also includes Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, David Rasche, Rebecca Henderson, Molly Brown, and Kathryn Erbe. This received mixed to negative reviews from TIFF, saying "the film is as messy as her character's behavior.

I am not of fan of movies that resort to breaking the fourth wall, as it were, and letting their key characters talk incessantly to the audience. It is a device that generally feels lazy, a writer’s crutch to explain away story points instead of letting us discover for ourselves. The recent annoying pandemic comedy Together, with James McAvoy and Sharon Horgan as a bickering couple who sell their sides of ongoing marital arguments directly to the camera, is an example of why overuse of this technique can be so tired. Now along comes The Good House, which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and where Sigourney Weaver as a functioning alcoholic real estate agent in North Boston offers her view on the town and its people with full sarcasm intact. It is based on the 2013 book by Ann Leary, and it seems this very literary conceit was...

In “The Good House,” Sigourney Weaver plays Hildy, a prickly, well-born Realtor in a wealthy New England town. Hildy is a mother and grandmother, and her family has become concerned with her drinking. When they stage an intervention, the beginning of which you can see in this exclusive clip, Weaver’s Hildy breaks the fourth wall, and tells the audience about the players.
“Let me introduce everyone first,” Hildy says to the camera. And then she does, peppering her comments with asides: “This is my ex-husband, Scott, to whom I pay alimony. Even though he left me for a man after 22 years of marriage.”
“The Good House,” an acquisition title produced by Amblin Partners, will premiere as a Gala Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 15. Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky co-directed the film, and also adapted Ann Leary’s 2013 novel of the same name with Thomas Bezucha.

Poor Red just isn't going to be allowed to find happiness.
We finally got to discover who Anne was on The Blacklist Season 8 Episode 13.
And surprise! She was just as she seemed to be, an innocent tourist who Raymond happened to run into at a New York City park.
This being The Blacklist, the consensus among viewers was that she was a plant by somebody who was out to seduce him.
And it appeared he had done the right thing back on The Blacklist Season 8 Episode 8 when he stood her up for "North by Northwest."
All he would have to do then with deal with regret and he's far too busy for that to linger.
Red really should have known better than to pursue Anne any further. After all, it's dangerous for any civilian to be around Red, as this episode proved with gusto.
It also had a real what-if feel to it.

Exclusive: With the current state of the social and cultural landscape, perception of race as well as political climate, the 2020 election is going to be one hell of a ride — and Tonya Pinkins’ forthcoming film Red Pill looks to deliver those thrills.
Written, directed, produced and starring Tony award-winning actress Pinkins, Red Pill has nothing to do with The Matrix, where a physical red pill is taken to reveal unpleasant truths. Based on the teaser trailer above for Red Pill, the title refers to someone who infiltrates a group and destroys them from the inside. The political thriller sets itself as a wake-up call about American politics, putting a haunting spotlight on the weaponization of whiteness and White Supremacy as well as the waves of “Beckys” and “Karens” calling the police on Black people for simply being Black.

Abel Ferrara has always existed on the fringe of filmmaking. The themes he tackles, the controversial content of his films, and his New York City attitude all help in keeping him on those fringes. Even when he attempted to cross over in the early 90’s to bigger-budgeted Hollywood films–with limited success– it wasn’t long until he again embraced the outsider attitude and moved right back into making no-budget films. The Addiction is a case in point. Shot for around $500,000, most of the cast and crew were employed for delayed compensation, a big gamble considering the typical earning potential of an Abel Ferrara film. But one doesn’t work with Ferrara for a big payday. One works with Ferrara because one appreciates pure cinema, the authenticity of Ferrara, and his guerrilla-style filmmaking. After dabbling with the Hollywood elite, The Addiction was a breath of fresh air for Ferrara,...

You might not know her name outright, but her face has been one of the most recognizable faces in TV history. That’s because of her role in the criminal TV drama Law & Order: Criminal Intent as Detective Alexandra Eames. The 52-year old actress actually did that role for 10 years from 2001 until 2011. While it may be her biggest role to date, she’s also had other major roles including Shirley Bellinger in Oz and as Jacqueline Roa in How to Get Away with Murder. This actress also has a few projects underway. As much as Erbe has been

Watch out – a bloodsucking fiend is stalking the highways and by-ways of lower Manhattan… and she has a PhD! Abel Ferrara’s vampire mini-epic puts Lili Taylor through an ordeal that’s harrowing, transformational and either profound or pretentious depending on how you roll with existential philosophy. We acknowledge that Ferrara is a good judge of actor-flesh: sharing in the theory-speak and blood-soaked grue are Christopher Walken, Annabella Sciorra, Edie Falco, and Kathryn Erbe.

The relationship between mothers and their gay sons is a longstanding theme of queer cinema, usually of the suffocating, jealousy-ridden, Freudian kind. That’s a trope filmmaker Mike Roma would like to upend. Hence the idea for his feature debut, “Dating My Mother,” a heartfelt comedy with a fresh take on the mother/gay son relationship.
“I’ve always been fascinated by the bond between mothers and their gay sons, but I’ve never seen a relationship quite like my own depicted onscreen,” said Roma. “Typically, gay men have been portrayed as deviant, weak, or dangerous, while their mothers have been castrating, icy, or evil. I wanted to break these stereotypes and show that a mother and son can be close without being Oedipal.”

Few actors star in a classic horror movie out of the gate and then find mainstream success on their own the way Bacon did. He doesn’t often wax nostalgic about his time at Camp Crystal Lake, although that seems less because he feels above it than it does that it was thirty-seven years and almost eighty roles ago.
Friday fans (like yours truly) will always remember him as Jack, the likeable guy who ended the summer of 1980 with one hell of a sore throat, but it’s important to remember that he also has some other phenomenal genre work to his credit. One such film didn’t have me expecting much at first, but by...
