M3GAN, the new Blumhouse flick about a homicidal robot doll (in theaters Jan. 6), is not Hollywood’s first foray into little-girl AI.
A campy ’80s sitcom called Small Wonder followed the exploits of Vicki — an acronym for Voice Input Child Identicant — who was a child android played by Tiffany Brissette, then 10. The show was created by the late Howard Leeds, who wrote on Bewitched and The Brady Bunch. Leeds had also written on My Living Doll, a short-lived sitcom from 1964 starring Julie Newmar as a robot woman. He borrowed that premise for Small Wonder, which debuted in syndication on Sept. 10, 1985. (It aired on the newly launched Fox network from 1986 until its cancellation in 1989, then lived on in reruns.)
After a nationwide search for the role of Vicki, producers “just loved Tiffany,” says Dick Christie, who played her inventor dad, Ted Lawson, “because she could pull off that monotone for the first three seasons.

The Fox television network is reportedly working on creating a TV drama series based on the professional wrestling business. The project is in the developmental stage undergoing script revisions, reports the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
Just because it’s being developed doesn’t mean it will be picked up or given the green light, but it’s certainly an interesting idea.
There was actually a television show in 1988-89 called “Learning The Ropes” that starred former NFL player Lyle Alzado and was a comedy about wrestling. It wasn’t that good and didn’t last that long, but they did get a lot of wrestlers to appear on it.
Probably the most successful narrative production based on wrestling would be Darren Aronofsky’s 2008 drama The Wrestler, a movie which also included an Oscar nominated performance from Micky Rourke as the fading wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson.

Just because you can play in the NFL doesn't mean you're tough enough to Wrestle -- so says Hulk Hogan who tells us all sorts of NFL tough guys have tried to cross over to the ring ... and Failed. And not just no-name scrubs ... we're talking some pretty famous NFLers who couldn't quite hack it with Vince McMahon's organization ... guys like Oakland Raiders legend Lyle Alzado. Destroyer is an oddity among slashers in that I know a lot of people who have never watched it but have seen the memorable VHS artwork of massively jacked-up NFL star Lyle Alzado hoisting a jackhammer like a machine gun.… Continue Reading →

Usually being assigned to sit in the electric chair means you’ve reached the end of the line, but for serial killer Ivan Moser, his death sentence is a springboard to a new string of murders in Robert Kirk’s Destroyer. Scream Factory has just announced they are coupling the 1988 horror film with William Wesley’s Scarecrows for a Blu-ray release next summer.
From Scream Factory: “Our “Shocktober” celebration continues with another film to reveal, and this is a rare one: The 1988 prison/slasher film Destroyer will make its debut on the Blu-ray format in Summer 2015 and will be paired in a double feature with the previously-announced Scarecrows—another quasi-slasher flick from 1988.
Similar to The Horror Show and Shocker in its execution (pun not intended) Destroyer sports a pretty wild cast starring former NFL player Lyle Alzado, Deborah Foreman (April Fool’s Day, Waxwork), Clayton Rohner (also from April Fool’s Day,...

A Separation (Sony) This drama from Iran won the 2011 Best Foreign Film Oscar, telling the story of a couple who file for a legal separation, with the wife pushing for a divorce. He won’t leave his Alzheimer’s-afflicted father behind, while she is wanting to take their young daughter with her to the United States. After a series of misunderstandings, threats and legal actions, the couple find that there is more than just their marriage that’s on the line. Hyper-realistic to a fault, reminiscent of the neo-realist films that came out of post-ww II Europe, but also repressive and redundant in the extreme, with the characters seeming to throw the same temper tantrum for two hours straight while the story, meanwhile, seems stalled. Wildly overpraised film is a real litmus test, with viewers seeming to be staunch defenders or equally impassioned detractors. It did win an Oscar,...

Bob Dylan- Christmas In The Heart Not sure if it's me, Sony, or Bob Dylan, but someone is out of their mind. It's hard to listen Dylan squawking "Adeste Fideles" with the finesse of Lyle Alzado and not laugh just a little. "Uh-dest-ay, fee' Dell- uss/Lay-dee, try Umph-fence." Still, I loved every second of this quite traditional and good-hearted surprise. Flaming Lips- Embryonic One of the most unnecessarily popular bands of this century, The Flaming Lips are back with a new record that is sure to have way too much going on, quirky production, annoying vocals, and one or two genuinely amazing songs ruined by all the stuff I just mentioned. Daryl Hall & John Oates- Do What You Want, Be What You Are (4Cd Boxed Set) Very nice career retrospective from the biggest selling duo of all time. My interview with H&O can be...
