When it comes to prisoner of war stories, few are as remarkable as "The Great Escape." During World War II, the inmates of Stalag Luft III in modern-day Poland embarked on a grand plan to dig not just one but three tunnels out of the camp. The goal was to bust out over 200 men and cause disruption to the Nazi war effort by tying up as many resources as possible trying to recapture them. It was no easy task, however, as the camp was specially designed to be escape-proof: the huts were raised above the ground to deter digging and built on sandy earth to make any efforts to disperse hundred tons of soil excavated from the tunnels obvious to the guards.
Nevertheless, the team, overseen by "Big X" Roger Bushell and his escape committee, largely made up of British servicemen and others from around the Commonwealth, displayed remarkable ingenuity...

Warning: contains The Rising spoilers.
The Rising is filled with all the twists and turns viewers have come to expect from a murder mystery drama. Adapted from Belgian crime thriller Beau Séjour, The Rising is set in small town in the British countryside, with sweeping landscapes and a thriving motocross community. The extra supernatural twist in this particular mystery is that its central character Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard) is dead from the start, but for some reason remains on earth. She can be seen and heard by a select few, and with their help, she’s determined to figure out who murdered her and why. In this eight-episode Sky series, the first six instalments are spent making discoveries and following false leads. The show pulls no punches, and takes you on an emotional journey where no-one, for the most part, is presented as either entirely good or bad until the killer is revealed.

There's something paradoxical about female gymnastics - that athletes so young and apparently petite can demonstrate such strength when they want to. Something of a metaphor then for the central character in Scottish writer/director Eva Riley's debut feature, played by real-life gymnast Frankie Box in a breakout role. She plays Leigh, a 14-year-old who has just been moved up to the senior squad but who is grappling with the grief of having lost her mother, a father (William Ash) so distant he might as well have moved to Mars and snide comments from other gymnasts who view her as "a charity case".
Leigh's mum is mentioned infrequently but Box gives a sense of grief having settled on Frankie, made more sharply acute when she tries to practice her floor routine and looks up to the window where her mum once, presumably, stood - now filled with other mums who barely give.

This review contains spoilers. The picturesque surroundings of Loch Ness provide the location for The Loch, the new murder mystery from ITV. Laura Fraser stars as local police officer Annie Redford who finds herself dealing with her first murder case after a local music teacher is found dead at the foot of Carn Mohr mountain with ligature wounds on his wrists and a rather large head injury. Elsewhere, a prank involving offal masquerading as the dead remains of Nessie leads to the discovery a human heart among the remains. As outside law enforcement help arrives, the main question appears to be what if the monster isn’t in the loch, but living in the town? The first episode makes a statement immediately, submerging us beneath the eponymous waters to see a body appearing in the gloom,...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Back to the Future: 25th Anniversary Trilogy"
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Released by Universal Home Entertainment
Yes, we're finally getting the footage of the original Marty McFly, Eric Stoltz, for the first time, but for many simply having the hi-def version of Robert Zemeckis' time-travel franchise will be good enough. Commentaries, deleted scenes, a full-length documentary and much, much more come on this new set of the trilogy.
"Alien Anthology"
Directed by Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Released by Fox Home Entertainment
While not as much of an upgrade over its previous DVD release as "Back to the Future," the Blu-ray update of the four "Alien" films worth owning now boasts isolated scores for each film, all of Ridley Scott's sketches for the first "Alien," the uncut documentary of David Fincher's ill-fated "Alien 3" as...

You know we are nearing the end of October when the pace of horror DVD title releases starts slowing down. I guess the powers that be banked on everyone buying horror DVDs several weeks before Halloween. Is that true? Are you folks doing just that, or are you only now starting your Halloween viewing party planning?
Anyway, while this week's bounty includes monsters in the water and in the sky, with mostly direct-to-dvd, TV movies and old re-releases, the juggernaut monster is the one in space with a complete set in one neat package.
Alien Anthology
Directed by Various
For the first time ever, the studio has united the material from every home video release of the Alien saga including the 1991/1992 laserdisc releases, the 1999 “Legacy” release and 2003’s groundbreaking Alien Quadrilogy release into one complete Blu-ray collection. The set also includes two versions of each film and over four hours...

A film from first time director Mark Tonderai "Hush," focuses on moral responsibility, human trafficking, and the love between central characters Beth and Zakes. Receiving financing from the UK Film Council and currently being distributed through North America by IFC Films "Hush," is a tightly wound thriller that primarily utilizes action sequences in place of dialogue to tell a tale of human depravity. Intense throughout the film offers well executed action sequences and a flair for the imaginative in ninety-one minutes flat.
The plot and story mostly revolves around characters Beth (Christine Bottomley) and Zakes (William Ash) who, unbelievably, encounter human trafficking on the English M-1. After witnessing a woman caged in the back of a generic white lorry Zakes reports the incident to police, but carries on as if business as usual. This scene hints at the films underlining message that each of us, the viewers, have a moral...

A horror road movie set on Britain's congested motorway system, its key scenes played out in the service stations, petrol station forecourts and car parks of the M1? For someone as interested in the ignored landscapes of the modern world as I am, "Hush" sounded almost too good to be true. Unfortunately it doesn't quite live up to its premise.
Not that it's without merit. The shoestring budget it was produced on has been turned to the film's advantage, the low-cost digital imaging rendering dark outdoor scenes grainy and raw and brightly-lit interiors sickly artificial; which coupled with on-location shooting which is necessarily claustrophobic, tight and no doubt thrown down as quickly as possible suits the mood of the film perfectly. It's a pacey affair, tense and quick-moving, with a couple of...

Film review: 'Mad About Mambo'
Aside from maybe those who would pay to see a preshorn Keri Russell, there isn't much in the way of an audience for "Mad About Mambo", a cloyingly artificial romantic comedy set in Northern Ireland that features the "Felicity" star in all her former follicular glory.
Serving as a feature filmmaking bow for screenwriter-director John Forte, the Gramercy Pictures remnant is a lazy retread of "Dirty Dancing", "Strictly Ballroom", "The Full Monty" and just about whatever else could be cribbed to boost theoretical commercial potential.
But the uninspired result comes across more like "Focus Group: The Movie" rather than any sort of greatest-hits package, despite the bonus Dublin-doubling-for-Belfast backdrop.
Actually produced pre-"Felicity", the film initially focuses on 18-year-old Danny Mitchell (William Ash), a student at St. Joseph's, a Catholic boys' school in working-class West Belfast. An avid soccer player who dreams of playing professionally for Belfast United, which recently imported star Brazilian player Carlos Rega (Daniel Caltagirone), Danny decides his style could benefit from a little Latin rhythmic infusion.
When his self-taught approach fails to generate the desired results, Danny enrolls at a dance studio, where he spots Lucy McLaughlin (Russell), a fair but somewhat chilly lass who's preparing for the Regional Latin Dance Finals with her pompous, possessive dance partner/boyfriend, Oliver (Theo Fraser Steele).
Thanks to some particularly lame plotting that conveniently puts Oliver out of the picture for a while, Danny hooks up with privileged, private-school-attending Lucy, and you just know their differences and initial hostilities will eventually melt into something warm and wonderful.
While Russell can certainly look the part, the only thing more tentative than her Irish brogue is her on-screen chemistry with British actor Ash. Their imposed romance feels as choreographed as their fancy dance moves, and even those -- for the most part tellingly shot above the waist -- are suspect.
Busy character actor Brian Cox, on the other hand, does his best Albert Finney as Sidney McLaughlin, Lucy's colorful local entrepreneur dad.
But despite a buoyant soundtrack that works overtime to fill the voids of energy and passion with selections by the likes of Xavier Cugat, Astrud Gilberto, Sergio Mendes and even a Spice Girls cover band, it's not enough to make up for Forte's slapped-together hodgepodge of recycled movie moments.
