President Barack Obama in Severance season two? We can only dream—literally. The cast and crew of Apple TV+'s Severance is nominated in 14 categories at the 2022 Emmy Awards, meaning they're set to rub elbows with some pretty famous people at the Sept. 12 ceremony, including the former president, who received a nod for Outstanding Narrator. "I don't know if Obama is going to be there," creator Dan Erickson told E!'s The Rundown at Comic-Con. "So I think he could be great." Ben Stiller, who directed six of Severance's nine episodes, suggested his character will be named Barry O., with Adam Scott adding, "And he has...

Barack Obama and his family were famously big movie buffs, taking advantage of the White House movie theater for a number of screenings of fresh movie releases. Pretty much any new movie release, in fact; that’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, which notes that some of the Obamas’ final choices included La La Land, several other Oscar contenders, and Monster Trucks.
The report doesn’t make it clear which Obama specifically requested the film, which—in case you forgot—is about a monster that is also a truck. Weinstein intern Malia? Sasha? Michelle? Barry O. himself? We might never know. Still, the Obamas’ presidential movie habit isn’t new; Bill Clinton apparently had a similar love, although he got most of his movies on DVD. “George W. Bush, not so much,” said one studio executive who fielded presidential requests.

I did a little bit of research for today’s column just to make sure I had my facts right, Googling “Jewish influence on comic books” in honor of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. There were 509,000 hits, from Den of Geek’s Mensch of Steel: Superman’s Jewish Roots to the Daily Beast’s Superman is Jewish?: The Hebrew Roots of America’s Greatest Superhero to Stormfront’s How and Why the Jews Stole the Comic Book Industry.
Wait. What?
Stormfront is a white supremacist site whose “welcome” page reads:
“We are a community of racial realists and idealists. We are White Nationalists who support true diversity and a homeland for all peoples. Thousands of organizations promote the interests, values and heritage of non-White (sic) minorities. We promote ours.
“We are the voice of the new, embattled white minority!

First dates are simply the worst, a nightmare of polite small-talk about siblings and hometowns, held-in flatulence and desperate hopes that the person eating dinner across the table isn't a serial killer. Not so for Barack and Michelle Obama, or at least, not according to the Sundance breakout Southside With You, which opens in theaters on August 26th.
Before the First Couple assumed their rightful place as the black JFK and Jackie O., they were two youngsters making tentative steps toward romance. But Richard Tanne's account of the meet-cute...

Whether he’s inspiring hope among downtrodden citizens, playing with kids, pets, or simply chilling in fast casual restaurants around the country, we can’t get enough of President Obama‘s heartwarming disposition. As he celebrates his 53rd birthday today, he’s still juggling international crises and humanitarian issues here at home. However, since he’s so level-headed, he’s always been able to quell any anxiety we may have.
He also visits Chipotle, listens to Beyoncé, and puts up with Zach Galifianakis. What’s not to love? With Congress currently taking its annual recess, we sincerely hope Barry O. is enjoying his day and getting through any episodes of House of Cards lingering on his Netflix queue. Since we appreciate his ability to keep us calm, we’ve compiled photos of Obama’s most comforting moments. Because the sight of Potus petting a fluffy dog is a birthday gift to us.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner welcomed stars of stage and screen to Washington, D.C. to mingle with politicos and catch a glimpse of Barry O. Documentary examines rise in injuries in rugby union and other sports that can cause brain damage in later life
Barry O'Driscoll, the former medical adviser to the International Rugby Board, is under no illusion about the defining moment of Ireland's 13-13 draw with France in March last year. The decision to allow his nephew, the multi-capped centre Brian O'Driscoll, to return to the pitch after suffering concussion was an outrage, he said.
"If that had been allowed in the United States, during an American football match, then the officials involved would have been sacked," he said.
O'Driscoll – who resigned from the Irb's medical advisory board in 2012 in protest at its handling of the issues of concussion and brain injury – was speaking in the documentary, Head Games: The Global Concussion Crisis, which premiered in London last week. The American-made film focuses on what it describes as "a silent, global...

Imagine that you met a guy named Barry O’-something–or-other at Sundance, or Tribeca, a real film fan who’d come every year, watch films in the seat right beside you, and then went off at some point and was elected president of the country.“That Michael?!!” screeched one American, from deep within her film festival bubble, when told that one of her old Galway Film Fleadh friends -- someone she’d been meeting year after year -- was the same Michael D. Higgins who is currently president of Ireland and was Sunday night’s guest of honor at the Fleadh’s closing-night awards.Such is the hermetically sealed world of film festivals. But it makes sense that Higgins would have been a Fleadh habitue: A former member of the Irish Parliament for Galway he was the nation’s arts minister, too, before being elected to his current office in 2011. He’s a poet,...

Why is it that Jennifer Lawrence, Michelle Obama and Adele get all the love, while Anne Hathaway, Taylor Swift and Peaches Geldof get it in the neck?
As the dust begins to settle on awards season, it becomes clear that some famous women get a lot more love than others. Rightly or wrongly, there are those whom everyone wants to make their instant best friend, and those who get it in the neck. Why is Adele so robustly likable, while the equally successful Taylor Swift often comes across like a wounded deer? Why would so many of us run into the nearest pub to neck shots with Jennifer Lawrence, and leave Anne Hathaway waiting in the car? Using deeply scientific methodology, we've uncovered the reasons behind this puzzling phenomenon.

The headline about sums it all up, because that's exactly what happened: Beth Ditto, lead singer of Gossip, allegedly got all wasted and belligerent in a Oregon bar this past weekend, and when she was thrown out into the street, she kicked off her shoes and began chanting, "Obama! Obama! Obama" over and over again - or so says the police report. She was eventually arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct, and was released on her own recognizance. The end! No, but seriously, can we talk about how awesome Beth Ditto generally is when she's not doing silly things like getting thrown out of drinking establishments for overindulging on their product? Because Beth Ditto's still pretty awesome - and even if you didn't vote for President Obama, wouldn't Barry O be one of the first people you'd call to come and pick you up from a bar if you got into trouble?...

The Ten Network has signed up three more sponsors for MasterChef: The Professionals, bringing the total to six.
The signings follow the three principal sponsors already announced – Coles, Fiat Chrysler and the Sunbeam Corporation.
Pasta brand Barilla Australia returns after backing MasterChef Australia last year, and Ten has secured two new sponsors in the BT Financial Group and Hewlett-Packard, the latter of which will use the series to promote its new Hp EnvyX2, a combined laptop and tablet.
Ten’s chief sales officer Barry O’Brien said MasterChef had “enduring appeal”, claiming it provided the deepest level of integration and tailored sponsorship on Australian television.
The series launches at 7.30pm on Sunday.

The New Zealand government's claim that The Hobbit films would create 3000 jobs was initially made by Peter Jackson.s production company and never independently verified, according to documents obtained by the Nz First party.
The documents also show that the government.s first query about jobs was made a year after it had already granted an estimated.$NZ67 million subsidy to Warners Bros and effectively removed the right of film workers to unionise amid threats to take the production offshore.

In this roundJohn Mescall
In this round up from the Encore and Mumbrella annual, we celebrate the nicest people working in the industry.
1. John Mescall, Ecd, McCann Australia
When was the last time you cried watching an ad? Mescall was behind The Impossible Orchestra – a 24-hour musical tribute to the 2.6m Australians who take care of sick or disabled loved ones – which got the audience blubbing. It was a campaign with heart, and that’s what Mescall (who devotes lots of his time working with charities) is all about. A genuine, bullshit-free bloke with bags of talent.
2. Mark Coad, CEO, PHd Australia
Unassuming and mild-mannered, Coad is not your typical big-talking CEO. And yet he could not have turned around former agency Omd without making some tough decisions. One of the most accomplished media operators in Australia, the Melburnian leads with an assured lack of fuss.

With a history of turning around struggling companies and a reputation for ambition. Ten CEO James Warburton is not afraid of a challenge. Brooke Hemphill asks if he’s the man to revive the struggling network.
“I’ve always wanted to be a CEO by the time I’m 40,” a young James Warburton told Allan Medforth, his onetime boss who he worked closely with at Universal McCann in the early 2000s. Warburton was at Channel Seven when he made the statement, in the role of chief sales officer, but it was not the first time he had spoken to Medforth about his career plans.
The comment couldn’t be far from his mind now that he sits in the big chair at Ten, two years after his 40th birthday. Nine months into the role, he might be wondering if he’s bitten off more than he can chew.

In one of the Australian media market’s major moves of the year, Louise Barrett, director of sales at Acp Magazines, is to become national sales director of Network Ten.
Barrett will move into the role in January, Ten has announced.
She will report in to chief sales officer Barry O’Brien. There was no immediate word from Ten on whether national sales manager Kylie Rogers will report in to O’Brien or Barrett.
O’Brien said in a statement: “Louise is the most highly respected sales director in the market. She has remarkable rapport with clients and agencies, and hiring her is an absolute coup for Ten.
“With the appointment of Louise and the return of our National Sales Manager, Kylie Rogers, from maternity leave in the new year, we will have a very formidable senior Sales team at Ten.”

Creative agency The Monkeys is to provide a new brand direction which will be revealed at this month’s relaunch.

I always thought that being a footballer must be one of the worst jobs in the world. Having thousands of people watching you up close and howling at your every error.
If I tried to cope with that in my day job, my spelling would be even worse than it is already.
But being a TV programmer must be worse.
There aren’t many gigs where millions of people judge your work every single day.
Every morning at 8.30am, the ratings come through – and we all find out if they are dunces or geniuses.
Right now, it’s the turn of Ten’s David Mott in the firing line. This year, he took a chance on several new pieces of Australian-made programming and so far most of them have not fired.
Which leaves the network struggling for audience share and facing dreadful headlines.
I’m part of that problem, by the way.

MasterChef production is moving to Melbourne
Production of MasterChef Australia is to move to Melbourne from Sydney.
After four seasons in Sydney, and following the sale of the Alexandria kitchen where the series was shot, MasterChef will move to the Melbourne Showgrounds for the 2013 season.
David Mott, Network Ten chief programming officer said: “This is an exciting move for MasterChef Australia’s viewers and sponsors,” Mr Mott said. “What better way to explore fresh, new cuisines than to head to what is arguably Australia’s food capital.”
“The Melbourne Showgrounds offers an exciting opportunity to create a new environment for MasterChef Australia, with a new kitchen, new challenges and new locations in Victoria’s acclaimed food and wine regions.”
Mark Fennessy, chief executive of production company Shine Australia said: “Since 2009, MasterChef Australia has enjoyed a wonderfully successful run in Nsw. Filming in Melbourne represents an exciting new chapter for the...

The head of sales for embattled Network Ten says the broadcaster needs just one hit to turn around its fortunes.
This week sees the network launch a tranche of new shows including Everybody Dance Now, Puberty Blues and Class Of. It is also about to launch the second series of Can of Worms with new host Chrissie Swan, and talent quest I Will Survive.
Barry O’Brien, Ten’s newly arrived chief sales officer, said that he followed the mantra of David Leckie, the man who turned around Seven’s fortunes.
He said: “I remember sitting with David Leckie when the network was not in great shape. All he said was ‘You need one.’ That’s where we’re aiming. If we got two, got three, absolute bonus.”

Linda Burney, acting Nsw opposition leader, has called on state Premier Barry O’Farrell to intervene on reported plans for the production of MasterChef to move to Melbourne.
It is rumoured that the $30m Sydney-based show, produced by Shine, is being lured to Melbourne by the Victorian government.
The production employs 360 people.
Burney said: “It will be an absolute travesty if Victoria steals MasterChef from right under Barry O’Farrell’s nose.”
“I am appalled – but not surprised – that the Victorian Government, Melbourne City Council and Tourism Victoria seem to have caught the O’Farrell Government on the hop,” She added.

Mark Coad is returning to the media world as CEO of media agency Phd after nearly three years at the helm of creative agency Clemenger Harvie.
Coad is seen as one of the most accomplished media operators in Australia and was credited with completing the turnaround of media agency Omd in his previous role.
The CEO role at Phd was not initially filled when Barry O’Brien, now chief sales officer at Ten, departed. The senior ranks at Phd are otherwise unaffected including Toby Hack remaining as MD.
Meanwhile Clemenger Harvie Melbourne will relaunch as Che Proximity – less than a year after changing its name from Che back to Clemenger Harvie. Gm Chris Howatson will become managing partner which at 27 makes him one of Australia’s youngest agency bosses.
Coad’s strong Melbourne connections will also be a boost for Phd which recently launched its Victorian operation to support new $120m client Anz.

Network Ten’s new chief sales officer Barry O’Brien has been backed by former Phd colleague Mark Holden to help Ten “extract disproportionate value from the market”.
O’Brien left Phd in April, and replaced Mike Morrison as Ten’s new sales boss earlier this week.
Holden told Mumbrella: “Barry’s agency perspective, connections, commercially dogged nature and disarming personality will help Ten extract disproportionate value from the market. His arrival is very timely.”
Holden was an influential figure on the Australian media scene during three years at Phd. He left in 2010 to take on a global strategy role at the network, based in London.

Ten has hired former Phd CEO Barry O’Brien as its chief sales officer.
The popular O’Brien stepped down as boss of Phd in April. He replaces Mike Morrison who lasted just six months in the role and departed last week.
O’Brien worked on the media agency side of the industry for more than 20 years, building up Total Advertising which eventually successfully relaunched as Omnicom’s Australian operation of Phd.
Network Ten chief executive James Warburton said: “Barry needs little introduction. His reputation, experience and comprehensive understanding of the media planning and buying process, plus his long-standing relationships across the media and marketing industries, will be invaluable for Network Ten.
“Barry is a proven leader and will provide direction for the Sales team, while nurturing the next generation of Sales executives at Ten.”...

The Daily Telegraph in Sydney breached the Australian Press Council’s principles on separating fact and opinion in its campaigning coverage of Sydney’s cycle paths.
The Apc ruled in relation to 17 articles relating to Sydney Mayor Clover Moore, who is also a state MP. The coverage focused on the bike lanes and also on her dual political roles.
The complainant said the newspaper had provided unfair and unbalanced coverage of both issues.
The newspaper argued that it was entitled to campaign on both topics.
The Apc ruled:
“The Press Council emphasises that publications are entitled to express strong opinions on issues and to use their editorials and opinion spaces for that purpose. From the advertising dollars to the ratings rivalry – television’s earliest timeslot is big business. Brooke Hemphill sets her alarm and goes on set to find out the perfect recipe for making breakfast TV.
It’s after midnight on a Thursday evening in Sydney’s Cbd. The streets are largely deserted as the final day of the working week looms. While the nine to five set are safely tucked up in bed, in the heart of the city, Seven’s Martin Place studio is quiet, although never sleeping. Several journalists staff the newsroom on the first level and one flight of stairs above, two producers work the overnight shift for Seven’s market-leading breakfast program, Sunrise. Soon they will be joined by line producer David ‘Dougie’ Walters who is about to begin his day.

A Soprano Sweeps into CSI: Miami Season 10
Coming up during November sweeps is a little Sopranos love for CSI: Miami’s tenth season. For many years you knew her as Adriana from the beloved HBO series, and now you’ll get to know her as… okay, the character doesn’t actually have a name yet. The point is, actress Drea de Matteo is guest starring on CSI: Miami. We may not know the character’s name, but we know plenty about her motivations on the show. She won’t be some frail woman; she’s got claws and is looking to use them.
Matteo is playing a sexy (duh) poker player who puts herself in a high-stakes illegal game that could wind up being quite dangerous. As it turns out the game is robbed and someone ends up dead. That’s when we find out Matteo is actually a mother.

CSI: Miami is about to get a little hotter with the addition of a fan-favorite Sopranos star.
Drea de Matteo is set to guest star on the CBS hit during November sweeps, and she has what sounds like a fun role on the show: de Matteo plays a sexy and smart poker player who’s the only woman competing in a dangerous, high-stakes illegal game. When the game is robbed and a man is murdered, we learn she’s actually a devoted mother out to avenge the attempted murder of her son in a similar robbery that left him disabled.

There’s going to be a new big bad for Horatio Caine to tangle with in the upcoming tenth season of CSI: Miami. TV Guide reports that Carlos Bernard, who played Tony Almeida in 24, will take on the job as the season’s villain. “We’re going to slowly position Horatio in opposition to a very subtle, but powerful, political patriarch,” said co-executive producer Barry O’Brien. So who exactly is this man who will inevitably shape the season? Well he doesn’t have a name yet, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some information on the character Horatio will go up against. “He’s kind of a Donald Trump meets the Kennedy family. …There will be a very high-octane relationship between the two. A hero is as heroic as his opposition is deadly, so we’re really going to go there with this character.”

The prime minister discussed his favourite films and TV programmes with Steve Wright – but perhaps the pressures of the job are getting to him
The Smiths, Radiohead, Pulp: there was a time when David Cameron's cultural tastes were simply incongruous. Thank God for public office, then, which – reassuringly – seems to have turned him towards mediocrity.
Last year, he expressed a love of posh west London folksters, Mumford & Sons – no surprise there – and just yesterday, in an interview for Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, the Pm extolled the virtues of industry favourite The King's Speech. Again, that won't raise eyebrows: as we know, Cameron went for new year's walkies with the film's star, Helena Bonham Carter.
So what else did we learn? Well, Big Dave bloody loves murder mysteries. In April, it was Danish drama The Killing. Lately, Cameron told Wright, it's been detective series Case Histories, and legal drama Injustice.
