Ministry Kick Off 2024 Tour in San Francisco with Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly: Photos + Video
Ministry kicked off their 2024 North American tour with Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly at the historic Warfield Theater in San Francisco on Tuesday evening (February 27th), just three days before the release of their 16th studio album, Hopiumforthemasses. As it had been a few months since Ministry were on the road, they were definitely refreshed and re-energized, delivering a set of both new and classic songs to a near sold-out venue.
Ministry wasted no time playing the new stuff, as they kicked off their set with five songs from Hopiumforthemasses, beginning with the singles “B.D.E.” (Big Dick Energy) and “Just Stop Oil.” Frontman and ring leader Al Jourgensen was his usual frantic self, belting out the lyrics while engaging with the fans up against the barricade. After a blistering version of “Goddam White Trash,” he and the band were joined by Jello Biafra for “Aryan Embarrassment” (a...

“August 2, 1957 — February 7, 2024 Mojo Nixon. How you live is how you should die. Mojo Nixon was full-tilt, wide-open rock hard, root hog, corner on two wheels + on fire…,” his family shared in a statement to Rolling Stone. “Passing after a blazing show, a raging night, closing the bar,...

Ministry have unveiled the track “Just Stop Oil” as the latest single from their upcoming album, Hopiumforthemasses, which is set for release on March 1st.
The new song follows the album’s first single, “Goddamn White Trash,” which arrived in August along with the announcement of the new LP. As is evident in the title, “Just Stop Oil” is political in tone, with Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen stating, “Ministry approves this message and the movement behind it. Enough is Enough!”
While “Just Stop Oil” doesn’t feature any guests, other tracks on the album boast appearances by Pepper Keenan, Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello), and Jello Biafra.
Ministry will support the album with a previously announced headlining 2024 North American tour featuring support from Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly. The outing kicks off in late February, with tickets available here.

Sometimes, the best classic rock covers are the most unexpected ones. Dead Kennedys covered Elvis Presley’s “Viva Las Vegas” and that changed their live shows forever. Band member Jello Biafra explained why his band decided to put their edgy spin on an Elvis song and why that made them different from other bands of the time.
Dead Kennedys’ cover of Elvis Presley’s ‘Viva Las Vegas’ was meant to confuse fans
“Viva Las Vegas” remains one of the most famous songs from Elvis’ movies. Dead Kennedys recorded the song with some lyrical twists. Dead Kennedys’ version features the lines “Oh, I’m gonna give it everything I’ve got / Lady Luck’s with me, the dice stay hot / Got coke up my nose to dry away the snot.” Those are not the sort of lyrics the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll would sing.

Ministry have announced their 16th studio album, Hopiumforthemasses, due March 1st, 2024. In advance of the LP, the industrial legends have offered up the video for lead single “Goddamn White Trash” featuring Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity.
In line with frontman Al Jourgensen’s M.O. as of late, Hopiumforthemasses looks to be another politically-charged rampage. The song titles say it all: “Just Stop Oil,” “Aryan Embarrassment,” etc.
“Just like you or anybody else, I’m simply a passenger in this lifetime,” commented Jourgensen in a press release. “I’m watching social changes, political changes, and economic changes, and I comment on them because I do have a First Amendment right. A lot of people say artists and athletes should shut up and play ball. No, I’m on this trip too.”
He continued, “If I see something, I say something. That reflects on where each album goes. Instead of...

“Punk and hardcore is always there to show support to a friend in trouble. Especially when [it’s the] entire nation,” said Hütz in a statement.

All You Can Eat opens with a shot of the sign for Planet Burrito, a Taco Bell type Mexican restaurant whose mascot is a three-eyed alien with a taste for human limbs that looks as if it was designed by Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. A brand new scripted audio series that just launched this year, NPRmageddon is “what National Public Radio will sound like after the apocalypse,” the team explains.
NPRmageddon is a ten-part post-apocalyptic sci-fi arthouse radio show audio drama adjective-rich podcast in the style of public radio, broadcast from the United States of “Lost” Angeles.
Creators Bryan Keithley and Peter Podgursky tell Save the Cat, “We based our storytelling on how modern media operates and what National Public Radio sounds like now.
“Our approach with NPRmageddon was to give our listeners the good stuff—to lean on one-off stories heavy on science fiction and horror tropes, but to push those tropes through the lens of public media journalism. Step through a typical episode of NPRmageddon, and you’ll find a delicious selection of news-y mayhem worthy of any headline-grabbing lineup from the real world—from marauding mutants to rogue AI’s to parasitic pulsating brains.

The Dead Kennedys are finally celebrating the 40th anniversary of their celebrated 1980 debut album, Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, by reissuing a “freshly” remixed edition of the LP. A punk benchmark, the album sarcastically skewered early Eighties politics with frontman Jello Biafra’s scabrous wit and guitarist East Bay Ray’s cutting guitar lines on songs like “California Über Alles” and “Kill the Poor.” Rolling Stone counted the record among the greatest punk albums of all time on a 2016 list. The reissue is due out Sept. 30.

Punk music has always been about individuality. Although skinheads and fascists have periodically tried to co-opt and homogenize the genre over its 50-year history, they have always failed, because the true spirit of punk begins with an original thought, a unique life story, and the poetic philosophies that truth is beauty and that the pomp and artifice of pop music are a distraction from expressing something deeper.
At its core, punk is the people’s rock & roll. Perhaps that’s one reason why the genre appeals more broadly than some...

Julia Nash felt as though she’d stepped into a Wax Trax! Records museum when she started looking through Dannie Flesher’s belongings. Flesher had cofounded the pioneering industrial label in 1980 with his life partner, Julia’s father Jim; they were responsible for putting out important releases by Ministry, Kmfdm, Front Line Assembly and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, among others. When Jim died of AIDS in 1995, his partner tried to keep the label and the couple’s Chicago record store going. Flesher eventually retired to Arkansas, where he,...

Two years after Ministry released their debut album, the major label synthpop LP With Sympathy, they attempted to return to their roots with 1985’s “(Every Day Is) Halloween” a single that celebrated all things goth. It’s a fairly straightforward New Wave number on which frontman Al Jourgensen ruminates on how people would stop and ask him why he’s dressed like it’s Halloween, “You look so absurd, you look so obscene.” It became something of an underground anthem, but Jourgensen abandoned it shortly after pushing the band in...

With nods to King Crimson, Talking Heads, Death Grips, and many others, London’s Black Midi creates a unique brand of cathartic punishment on their excellent debut. The band’s barely college age (they met at the same prestigious performing arts school that produced Adele and Amy Winehouse), but they’ve attained striking erudition, dexterity and compositional know-how for musicians so young — not to mention a lot of UK hype for a band this odd.

You can tell that The Last Black Man in San Francisco, the debut feature from director Joe Talbot, is something special within its first five minutes. It isn’t just the opening moments, in which a young African-American girl is seen staring up at something, which the next shot reveals to be a man in a hazmat suit, picking up debris — a weird, witty, wonderful one-two punch. A man stands on a milk crate in the middle of the street,...

When the Ramones first performed “Blitzkrieg Bop” at Cbgb some 44 years ago, no one could have imagined the song would be heard in virtually every stadium and in multiple TV spots for mainstream products like Coppertone, GoPro, Peloton, At&T and Taco Bell.
And punk rock, the genre of music that the Ramones and so many others ushered in, seemed destined for an equally short shelf life. Yet despite its built-to-self-destruct ethos, punk rock has not only endured, it continues to attract fans both old and young — anyone who’s read this far has probably already heard about the dust-up between Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (aka Rotten) and former Ramones drummer Marc Bell at an onstage Q&A last week to promote the film, which is at turns hilarious, pathetic and ridiculous, and often all three at once.
Two current documentaries illustrate the genre’s remarkable durability and continued relevance:...

Chicago – There are cultural heroes, and then there is comedy writer Steve Young. Through sheer happenstance, he began a journey that ended up with a rediscovery of an art form that without Young’s intervention would have died. The U.S. corporation Broadway-style “industrial musical,” which highlighted products or sales meetings in a song and dance presentation, were at its peak popularity from the 1950s through the ‘70s. “Bathtubs Over Broadway” is Young’s documentary of appreciation for those shows and and his intervention to revive them.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
To experience “Bathtubs…” is to witness a miracle. What began as a minor comedy bit on “Late Night with David Letterman,” where Steve Young was a writer, morphed into a bit of an obsession for the low-keyed jokester. His delving into the corporate show culture began with the souvenir records from these shows, done in very limited runs. After seeing the names associated with these shows…...

"This stuff is bizarre and hilarious." Focus Features has debuted a new official trailer for Bathtubs Over Broadway, a fascinating, fun musical theater documentary that is already playing in select theaters now. Comedy writer Steve Young's assignment to scour bargain-bin vinyl for a "Late Show with David Letterman" segment becomes an unexpected, decades-spanning obsession when he stumbles upon the strange, hilarious world of industrial musicals in this comedic music documentary. Young discovers bizarre cast recordings - marked "internal use only" - of full-on, Broadway-style musical shows about some of America's most iconic corporations: General Electric, McDonald's, Ford, DuPont, and Xerox. This doc features a score by Anthony Dilorenzo; plus interviews with David Letterman, Chita Rivera, Martin Short, Florence Henderson, Susan Stroman, Jello Biafra and more. I'm glad these funny musicals are finally getting some time in the spotlight. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Dava Whisenant's doc Bathtubs Over Broadway,...

If Dava Whisenant’s joyous documentary “Bathtubs Over Broadway” served only to spotlight the occluded corner of American musical history known as the “industrial musical,” it would be perfectly entertaining in its own right. But in its portrayal of one man’s unusual journey, the film has much to say about turning ironic amusement into unalloyed appreciation.
And if you don’t know what an “industrial musical” is, relax — we were never meant to see them in the first place. Starting in the 1950s, these shows were crafted to entertain and inspire the sales reps from companies like Xerox and General Electric. Expensive and elaborate, they were often performed only a few times, at conventions or sales meetings, and they mostly exist now on souvenir soundtrack recordings (of shows with names like “Diesel Dazzle” or “The Bathrooms Are Coming!”) that weren’t intended to be shared with the general public.

Stephen Colbert and his audience felt the Bern on Friday night's Late Show as the host dedicated much of the episode to Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, who is steadily closing in on Hillary Clinton's once-impenetrable lead in the Democratic presidential field. Before Sanders sat down for their interview, Colbert first served up a "Bern Notice" summarizing the candidate's "meteoric rise." "He's rising, you know, like meteors do," Colbert quipped.
"Sanders' popularity is surprising because he's a self-described socialist who would also be our oldest president ever. The man is 74 years old,...

"Belle"
What's It About? This 18th century English romance is about Dido Belle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a biracial woman raised by her aristocratic great uncle and aunt, Lord and Lady Mansfield. She grows up alongside her cousin Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) as equals and best friends, but as they come of age, their differences become all too apparent -- to each other and to their would-be suitors. Meanwhile, Lord Mansfield (Tom Wilkinson) is facing a trial as Lord Chief Justice of England that could change the future of slavery. Will Dido find love on her own terms?
Why We're In: It's an elegant period piece perfect for Jane Austen fans, and it's a subtle but effective examination of the intersection of class and race in 18th century England. Mbatha-Raw is fantastic, and director Amma Asante has an excellent eye for detail.

Jello Biafra first found pop culture prominence as the lead singer of the Dead Kennedys, and while he's also carved out a reputation as a top-notch spoken word artist, he’s continued to write and record new music, most recently fronting a band called the Guantanamo School of Medicine. (Their most recent album, "White People and the Damage Done," hit stores last year.) Every once in awhile, though, Biafra enjoys the opportunity to step away from the microphone and step in front of the camera to show off his acting chops. Indiewire spoke to Biafra about his guest spot on tonight's episode of "Portlandia" and why he needn't have bothered to memorize his lines. Then we took a deeper look into some of the other entries in his decidedly eccentric filmography. So what part do you play on "Portlandia"? Well, the apple didn’t fall too far from the tree,...

There's very little about Al Jourgensen's legendary band Ministry that hasn't been covered on these pages in some form or another, since I've been a hardcore fan of Uncle Al's output since the late '80s – a period which not only encompasses Ministry's pioneering works of industrial/metal fusion, but side projects like Revolting Cocks and Lard (the latter featuring Dead Kennedys founder and punk icon Jello Biafra), and his collaborations with industrial icons like Skinny Puppy. For those of you still catching up, you can take part in a pretty comprehensive musical journey through the band's catalog via the live album/concert film Adios... Puta Madres (which I covered in depth here), a candid document of the band's "C-u-latour." Several factors at the time led Jourgensen to dissolve Ministry after that run – including the departure of co-founder Paul Barker, the death of legendary bassist Paul Raven, and Al's own declining health.

It’s been a while since we’ve featured a music video as a short, but this one’s definitely worth it. Not only does it stretch a one-note gag to its breaking point, it also offers a thick sense of catharsis by proxy. Don’t pretend you’ve never wanted to do this. Because you have. We all have. Plus, the song from Fidlar plays like Jello Biafra and Elvis Costello smashing stuff in a woodshed. A perfect marriage of music and a drunken stupor of a story to tell. What Will It Cost? Between 3 and 4 minutes. Watch More Short Films...
