At the intersection of big-star international dealmaking, the 70mm epic, and the humble sword ‘n’ shield actioner, this comic book viking saga stacks one absurd, borderline bad taste action scene on top of another. It’s an irresistible mash-up of earlier successes, well directed visually by Jack Cardiff. Richard Widmark at forty must play the Viking action hero, Russ Tamblyn at thirty is still a physical dervish, and Sidney Poitier takes on the strangest casting of his career. Plus, low sexist comedy from a platoon of hearty Brit thesps!

Epics — everybody wants to make them but the studios are naturally wary. Richard Attenborough’s ode to the youthful ambitions of Sir Winston Churchill was a big hit in England but didn’t make a dent here. Although a dead ringer for the young Winston, Simon Ward didn’t take off as a star either, leaving Anne Bancroft and Robert Shaw in a sidebar drama that will mostly be remembered for an Std. Correspondent-soldier Churchill sees action in India, The Sudan and South Africa, thanks to the intervention of his socially adept mother. It’s a beautiful, ‘safe’ production with plenty of national pride. Its American premiere served as the Grand opening screening for the second Filmex film festival.

Olinka Berova is as sexy as Ursula Andress, but even with a new woman producer Hammer’s She sequel doesn’t give her new She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed much of a chance — the story just sits there and the kingdom of Kuma is woefully under-produced. Good photography and acting help, but one doesn’t earn high marks for the Boys from Bray.

'The Pink Panther' with Peter Sellers: Blake Edwards' 1963 comedy hit and its many sequels revolve around one of the most iconic film characters of the 20th century: clueless, thick-accented Inspector Clouseau – in some quarters surely deemed politically incorrect, or 'insensitive,' despite the lack of brown face make-up à la Sellers' clueless Indian guest in Edwards' 'The Party.' 'The Pink Panther' movies [1] There were a total of eight big-screen Pink Panther movies co-written and directed by Blake Edwards, most of them starring Peter Sellers – even after his death in 1980. Edwards was also one of the producers of every (direct) Pink Panther sequel, from A Shot in the Dark to Curse of the Pink Panther. Despite its iconic lead character, the last three movies in the Pink Panther franchise were box office bombs. Two of these, The Trail of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther, were co-written by Edwards' son,...

According to Variety, Dafoe will play undercover detective Gerhard Hardman in the film.
The original film was directed by Sidney Lumet and released in 1974 and it was nominated for six Academy Awards. It's a great film that I suggest watching if you haven't already. The site reports that Jolie had never signed a deal to appear in the film, although she entered early talks and was in negotiations to join the cast.

Why Kenneth Branagh Loves Mysteries, from ‘Wallander’ to ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (Emmy Watch)
Kenneth Branagh fell into his love affair with the “Wallander” mysteries by Swedish author Henning Mankell (1948 – 2015) for “the sheer pleasure of the reading,” he told me over the phone. “It was novel by novel. I’m not usually a kind of completist in this regard, but each novel did send me to the next one, and I did read them in order, and I did find myself drawn in, hypnotically. I didn’t feel I’d met anyone quite like this before or this landscape.”
The novels are set in Sweden, in and around the town of Ystad, 35 miles south-east of the city of Malmö, in the southern province of Skåne. And that’s where the PBS Mystery series (four seasons, from 2009 through 2016) is also filmed. “It’s vast and flat,” said Branagh. “It has a strong regional dialect. It’s a curious, forgotten, unfashionable pocket of land. Over 60 percent...

Nessie at large in The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes
Scientists got a shock today when the underwater robot they were operating Loch Ness discovered a monster. 30 feet long with a slender neck, it certainly looked like the famous beastie that has brought tourists to the loch for over a century, but there's a reason for that. Upon close inspection, it turned out to be a long lost prop made for 1970 film The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes.
The discovery was made by Kongsberg Maritime, a Norwegian company working with VisitScotland to explore the ecology of the loch and find out if it's possible that a real monster could be living there.

We don’t know a great deal about the content of the 90-minute Sherlock special set to air later this year, but one thing has emerged from the set photos and tantalising titbits of information we’ve seen so far. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson will be in nineteenth-century garb, pitching them back into the setting of the legendary detective’s original adventures: 1895, to be precise. Why that happens is as yet unclear, but all will be revealed.
For those still craving their Holmes fix in the meantime, the new film Mr. Holmes offers us Ian McKellen’s take on the character, musing upon an old case as he looks back on his long career from the vantage point of retirement. Fox’s remake of the classic Agatha Christie whodunit Murder on the Orient Express is picking up steam, now that Michael Green has been tapped to pen the script. The studio has been developing this redo since late 2013, when power trio Ridley Scott, Simon Kinberg and Mark Gordon all came aboard as producers. No director is yet attached to the pic, but Fox is understandably looking to attract a big name.
The story, one of the author’s most acclaimed to feature detective Hercule Poirot, was previously adapted for film by Sidney Lumet back in 1974. His take was rapturously received, racking up six Oscar nods and winning one (for Ingrid Bergman’s supporting performance). Albert Finney starred as Poirot, leading an all-star cast that included Bergman, Lauren Bacall, Jacqueline Bisset, Colin Blakely, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, Anthony Perkins, Vanessa Redgrave and Michael York.

Back in the fall of 2013, we learned there was development of a remake of the 1974 Sidney Lumet mystery Murder on the Orient Express, an adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1934 novel of the same name. Ridley Scott was producing with Simon Kinberg (writer of X-Men: Days of Future Past and Sherlock Holmes) and Mark Gordon, but there was no writer on board yet. But that's changed now as Variety reports Green Lantern writer Michael Green, who is also working with Scott on the Blade Runner sequel with Harrison Ford starring and Denis Villeneuve directing, will script the remake for Scott Free Productions. Read on! The original story follows detective Hercule Poirot, a genius Belgian detective who is called upon to solve a murder that occurred in his train car the night before. Albert Finney played the detective while an all-star cast of classic movie stars like Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset,...

Perhaps nearly any classy English actor could have played Sherlock Holmes – if not elementary, it's fundamental to a certain type of career
I'm typing this in Baskerville; it's the only way to go with the astonishing parade of Baker Street irregulars, the actors who have played the great detective in one medium or another. We are about to receive the second picture in the latest manifestation, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The wonders of film number one (just plain Sherlock Holmes) in what may end up a wearying franchise included a gross Us income of over $200m, a real part for Jude Law (Watson), and the realisation Robert Downey Jr had found the vehicle for his languid-depraved attitude (the thinking man's Johnny Depp) and his urge to get away with whatever came into his head – plus, it seemed to resurrect the career of director Guy Ritchie whose insecure grasp...

With ‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows’ set for release this December you have plenty of time to brush up on the great detective and his trusty partner Dr Watson. Only problem is that in his 124 year history, Holmes is one of, if not ‘the’, most portrayed fictional character of all time – so where to start?
Luckily you readers I have compiled a list of the 10 must see Sherlock Holmes Interpretations.
10. Young Sherlock Holmes (1985)
I’ll start with this underrated and often overlooked entry from executive producer Steven Spielberg and writer Chris Columbus (who went on to direct ‘Home Alone’ and the first two ‘Harry Potter’ pictures). This original adventure which re-imagines Holmes and Watson as teenagers who meet at boarding school and team up to solve a mystery involving a spate of murders around London.
Intended to kick off a franchise, this movie, while not based on any of Doyle’s stories,...

The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (Billy Wilder, 1970)
The magic of this film, I think, comes down to the writing of the dialogue by Wilder and his writing partner, Izzy Diamond. There are a number of conversations between Robert Stephens (Sherlock) and Colin Blakely (Watson) that are just like tiny symphonies. Every gag, every little annunciation or pause is poised perfectly and, watching it recently (it was a template of sorts for Stephen Moffat and me as we made our adaptation for the BBC) made me realise that Wilder and Diamond were among the best screenwriters in the world. They gently take the mickey out of Sherlock Holmes in the way that you can only do with something that you really adore. It's a fantastically melancholy film. The relationship between Sherlock and Watson is treated beautifully; Sherlock effectively falls in love with him in the film, but it's so desperately unspoken.

Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) is his personal Magnificent Ambersons. It was taken away and edited without his supervision or approval, and the excised footage is currently thought to be lost. He apparently hated the version that was eventually released, but it's still a very enjoyable movie, full of typically bracing Billy Wilder humor (co-written, of course, with I.A.L. Diamond). The film was originally supposed to contain four unrelated stories and now contains only two. In the first one, Holmes pretends to be in a gay relationship with Watson to avoid the unwanted attentions of a female suitor. In the second, main section, he searches for a missing husband, and the search includes a visit from his brother Mycroft (Christopher Lee, a former Sherlock himself) and an encounter with the Loch Ness Monster.

Sherlock Holmes is in theaters right now starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law as the bromantic pair of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. But there have been many incarnations of the iconic characters, including the one embedded below from our sister site, SlashControl.
The Private Lives of Sherlock Holmes is directed by Billy Wilder and stars Robert Stephens as the great detective, with Colin Blakely playing Dr. Watson. It was released in 1970 and finds a bored Holmes eagerly taking the case of Gabrielle Valladon (Genevieve Page) after an attempt on her life. The search for her missing husband leads to Loch Ness and the legendary monster. That Holmes gets around, doesn't he?
I really enjoyed the current film playing in theaters. Although the plot drags a bit, no detail was missed in the setting or clothing from that era (late 1800s in London). Do you have a favorite version of Sherlock Holmes?...
