Even though Sandra Bullock has nailed it classically in multiple other roles, one of her most real dramas was in none other than Speed. Not only was the masterpiece widely commended by critics and general viewers alike, but it is also regarded among some of the best performances to date from the film’s three prominent leads, i.e., Keanu Reeves, Bullock, and Jeff Daniels.
Speed (1994).
Surprisingly enough, even though the action-thriller later granted them such impeccable fame in their respective careers, there was a time when Daniels almost turned down his iconic role. However, thanks to a series of fortunate turn of events, not only did he end up starring in the film, but he also took an unlikely inspiration from the late Roy Scheider in one Steven Spielberg movie!

Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted is loosely based on the invention of Pop-Tarts. Seinfeld’s feature directorial debut uses a shot inspired by the Steven Spielberg classic of 1975, Jaws. In the film, Spielberg uses the Dolly Zoom shot, which the Seinfeld creator has copied in his upcoming Netflix comedy. Seinfeld opened up about how such classic cinematic shots influenced him as a filmmaker.
Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted, releasing on Netflix, will have some interesting cinematic shots
Seinfeld’s film stars an ensemble cast including Jim Gaffigan, Hugh Grant, Melissa McCarthy, and Amy Schumer. Seinfeld, Barry Marder, who writes for Seinfeld’s stand-up shows, and Seinfeld writers Spike Feresten and Andy Robin wrote the screenplay of the film.

Is "Jaws" the greatest movie ever made? An impossible question to answer, but it's my favorite and the one I've rewatched the most as an adult. I've been lucky enough to see it in theaters a couple of times, including for the IMAX restoration in 2022. As gorgeous as "Jaws" looked in IMAX, the trailer for the restoration is downright uncanny. Almost 50-year-old footage is cut together with modern trailer editing rhythm, from the jumpiness to turning Chief Martin Brody's (Roy Scheider) "You're gonna need a bigger boat" line into the kind of funny stinger you might see in a Marvel Studios trailer.
Now, in the movie, that line happens right after the jump scare where the shark first appears, rearing up behind Brody as he's throwing chum off the stern of The Orca, Quint's (Robert Shaw) fishing boat. Brody's back is turned when the shark breaches the water,...

"Jaws" is an immortal classic, but decades on from its 1975 release, several of the movie's principal players have left us. Peter Benchley, the source novel's author and the film's co-writer turned shark conservationist, passed in 2006. Robert Shaw, who played the shark-hating fisherman Quint, died in 1978, a mere three years after the premiere of "Jaws." Shaw still left his mark on film history thanks to his masterful monologue about Quint's experience during the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.
Of course, the biggest winner of "Jaws" was director Steven Spielberg, who entered the production of "Jaws" as a scrappy young upstart and turned it into his first rung while climbing the Hollywood lader. Spielberg is the most influential American filmmaker of his generation and the ones that have followed. He's never lost his magic touch either, so we can only hope and pray he stays with us even longer.

Unlike "Halloween," "The Exorcist," "Alien," or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," "Jaws" is the rare iconic '70s horror franchise that has yet to see any sort of revival in the 21st century ... mostly because Steven Spielberg himself has gone all Quint with a baseball bat on Universal's attempts to reboot it. But more than that, Spielberg's original 1975 hit (itself based on Peter Benchley's pulpy 1974 best-selling novel) never really lent itself to being a franchise in the first place. There aren't any supernatural entities or unexplained other-worldly encounters in Spielberg's classic adventure, nor does it end with Bruce the shark flailing his fins and dancing a merry jig. It's not what one would call the most scientifically-accurate work of Sharksploitation to ever hit the big screen, but it is a grounded story with a clear-cut beginning and ending.
Nevertheless, "Jaws" was the recipient of three sequels back in the 20th century,...

If the new documentary Sharksploitation over on Shudder left you itching to revisit some shark attack classics, Netflix has you covered this September with the entire Jaws franchise.
Jaws, Jaws 2, Jaws 3, and Jaws: The Revenge are swimming back to Netflix on September 1.
It all began with Steven Spielberg’s horror classic in 1975, an adaptation of Peter Benchley’s same-titled novel that has been keeping people out of the water for almost 50 years now.
The late Roy Scheider’s heroic character Martin Brody survived the events of the original film and returned in 1978 for Jaws 2, once again saving Amity from another killer shark.
The franchise returned in 1983 with Jaws 3D, which brought the shark attack terror to SeaWorld in Florida. The film centered on Martin Brody’s sons, with Dennis Quaid starring as Michael Brody. Jenn Adams recently wrote an appreciation for Jaws 3D here on Bd, writing:

"You always think, if you're a proud son, that you could talk to your father and you could help ... Well, I never got to that." Playing his late father onstage, Ian Shaw delivers these devastating words in "The Shark Is Broken" with matter-of-fact gruffness. His face also bears the weathered and mustached likeness of his father, the late Robert Shaw, the man who embodied the sea captain, Quint, in the 1975 watershed "Jaws."
The legends of the behind-the-scenes snafus of "Jaws" (adapted from Peter Benchley's novel) wouldn't be complete without Robert Shaw's on-set drunkenness, his documented feud with co-star Richard Dreyfuss, and a scuffle provoked by Dreyfuss tossing his alcohol into the sea (loosely dramatized in this play). With co-writer Joseph Nixon, the younger Shaw took inspiration from his father's drinking diary, family archives, and other "Jaws" sources to pen "The Shark is Broken," a comic meditation on the blockbuster's...

Marc Gilpin, best known for portraying the son of Chief Martin Brody in the sequel to “Jaws,” has died at the age of 56.
Peri Gilpin, known for her role as Roz Doyle in “Frasier,” announced that her older brother had passed on Saturday following a long battle with glioblastoma.
Gilpin played Sean Brody in 1978’s “Jaws 2.” He starred alongside Roy Scheider as Brody, Lorraine Gary as Brody’s wife Ellen and his sister, April Gilpin.
Unlike the original seaside horror movie, “Jaws 2” heavily featured the chief’s two kids, Sean and Mike (Mark Gruner). While another great white shark is loose around Amity Island, Mike takes his little brother on an ill-fated boating trip. Brody is once again forced to face off against a dangerous killer, this time to save his sons.

His death was announced by his sister, the Frasier actor Peri Gilpin.

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws left an indelible mark on cinema upon release in 1975, ushering in the summer blockbuster as we know it. Like its many taglines, Jaws also made people afraid to go into the water thanks to a newfound fear of man-eating sharks. And the film’s massive box office success created a tsunami of copycats, launching the “sharksploitation” subgenre.
But emulating Jaws only goes so far, and the subgenre has been forced to constantly find inventive new ways to reimagine the shark horror movie. One surefire but cheeky way to stand out from an increasingly crowded subgenre is to add novelty to the concept, often by altering the setting. If people are too afraid to go into the water, the shark should go to the people.
Luckily, there’s no shortage of weird, wacky settings that dramatically alter the formula…

Written by Joseph Nixon and Ian Shaw, the look-alike son of legendary actor Robert Shaw, the stage comedy The Shark Is Broken, which goes behind-the-scenes of the filming of the 1975 Steven Spielberg classic Jaws (watch it Here) and sees Shaw taking on the role of his father, made its premiere at the 2019 Edinburgh Festival Fringe before moving to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre in 2021. And now, Deadline reports, The Shark Is Broken is heading to Broadway!
Deadline shares the details: Directed by Guy Masterson, The Shark Is Broken will begin a limited 16-week engagement on Tuesday, July 25, at the John Golden Theatre, with an official opening on Thursday, August 10.
Shaw reprises the role of his father, who played Quint in Jaws. The stage comedy imagines what happened on board Quint’s boat (the Orca) when the cameras stopped rolling during the filming of Spielberg’s blockbuster.
This marks the Broadway debut for Shaw.

In a truly awful election season, it's important to laugh if only to keep from crying. When it comes to the medium of cinema, the words “fan theory” have a built in eye roll factor of about eight million.
And that’s because most of the time, a movie theory tends to be the work of a crackpot; an insane person who has spent their precious time and energy trying to find meaning in something that there really is no meaning to be found in.
But occasionally a movie theory will crop up out of nowhere, slap you right in the face with its audacity, and make you feel sheepish for not having guessed that it was true all along. For those of us old enough to remember, it’s very hard to believe that Steven Spielberg‘s Jaws will be turning 40 next year. The film that has kept people out of the ocean the world over for decades has also helped raise interest and awareness for the often misunderstood creatures. Either way you bite it, though, sharks are frightening. Unless, that is, you’re in a boat with a trained and skilled professional shark hunter, a marine biologist and a police chief… okay, even in that scenario, sharks are still frighting.
Something that’s not so frightening are LEGOs. LEGOs are pretty darn awesome. And as most kids (and adults) know, building and playing with LEGOs can provide hours and hours of family fun. I’ve been collecting and building LEGOs my whole life. Like most kids, my brother and I had a huge bag full of LEGOs, and...

It can be such a beautiful happening when the natural forces of humanity and the wild kingdom can get together and establish a sense of harmony in motion pictures. Also, it can be a compelling yet regrettable conflict as well when man and beast decide to collide in the interest of big screen entertainment. Whatever the case may be certainly does not matter because the concept of beasts of all species (rather it be of the four-legged or two-legged variety) collectively clashing or cooperating sends a special message about triumph, tragedy and just plain tenderness.
In Beast of Burden: Top 10 Human-Animal Combinations in the Movies we will look at some of the best selections where man and animal co-exist whether it be in calmness or chaos. There is no doubt that one can come up with numerous top ten lists detailing their ideal man-animal themes in cinema. The struggle for...

Syfy has released the first teaser trailer for Sharknado 2: The Second One, set to premiere on the network later this summer.
Sharknado 2 Teaser Trailer
The teaser trailer features slides of review clips – including, “Even more ridiculous…” from Entertainment Weekly – interspersed with shots of the highly anticipated sequel. Stunned New Yorkers look to the sky as the meteorological phenomenon descends upon the metropolis.
“It’s happening again,” says Ian Ziering as protagonist Fin Shepard, who fended off the aquatic infestation in Los Angeles last year. He’s later seen lifting up a chainsaw to the sky in preparation for a flying shark. He’s also spotted with his pal Martin Brody (Mark McGrath) floating above the flooded Manhattan streets on top of a yellow cab.
Like Ziering, Tara Reid is returning from the original made-for-tv movie. In addition to McGrath, newcomers are Vivica A. Fox, Kelly Osbourne, Mark McGrath,...

The summer of 2001 was especially tense. Having just been through an unending presidential election, the U.S. seemed especially on edge. Even before the towers fell in September, the media was already pushing a large, unknown insurgency, it’s face gracing the cover of Time just a month before.
The infamous “Summer of the Shark” cover is today gawked upon, like Y2K or the Africanized bees that preceded it. After a media feeding frenzy, there is always a through-the-looking-glass “What were we so worried about?” perspective that takes hold once reason sets in. And, as such, post-9/11, America stopped looking to the ocean.
Killer shark movies have since been relegated to direct-to-dvd shlock from Roger Corman and The Asylum. However, just a few decades earlier, they were franchise-bait.
When Steven Spielberg was approached to direct a sequel to his first major success Jaws, he didn’t even bother responding. He...

Tris hopes that if this set becomes a reality, he can donate funds to the Shark Savers marine conservation fund.
Since the book & films release understanding the importance of marine conservation has become widely publicized and supported. However, the oceans are still losing vital species and habitats at an alarming rate. We have the power to change this.

With the news that the African Queen has become a tourist boat on the Nile, we look at other screen boats that have captured film fans' imaginations
Boats and films go together like the seaside and scampi. There's the 320-tonne steamboat in Fitzcarraldo that Werner Herzog famously had the film's extras cart over a hill to get it from one tributary of the Amazon to another. Then there's Kevin Costner's trusty trimaran in Waterworld, the U-96 of Wolfgang Petersen's Das Boot, Forrest Gump's shrimping vessel, and Jenny and One-Eyed Willy's ship, The Inferno, which the truffle-shuffling gang come across in The Goonies. This year, we'll be popping our life-jackets on again in readiness for another boat film, Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah.

It seemed to be some sort of rule of thumb with the more iconic of horror baddies – the bigger you are then the harder and much more spectacularly you fall, usually amidst a climatic showcase of visual effects that have stretched the already limited budget of the film to near breaking point. I guess that's part of their enduring appeal. I mean, would Dracula really have been as unforgettable as he is if he was easily snuffed out by a simple baseball bat to the dome? Could you imagine watching a version of King Kong where the ape was simply put down like Old Yeller instead of being shot down from the top of the Empire State building? Some of these deaths have become as iconic as the villain themselves, complimenting the closing of the film with some final reel fireworks. Even a nameless henchman has a fighting chance for...

Thirty years ago, Jaws 3-D hit theaters across the world to critical failure, thanks to a catalogue of errors: it lost main man Martin Brody, located itself at Sea World, used gimmicky 3-D and was full of plot holes. Critics of the time were furious that such a film could follow in the auspicious footsteps imprinted on the industry by the perfect film that was Jaws left.
Upon digging up some thirty year old magazines from a relative’s attic, I made the discovery of an article reviewing the film, calling it ‘the worst thing they could have done to ruin Jaws.’ I laughed at the naivety of that comment, emboldened by the knowledge in hindsight of the coming atrocity that was fourth film, Jaws: The Revenge.
And then I came to the conclusion that if this critic knew these ten things about the awful shark-shaped mess that was on the horizon,...

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, Jaws has arrived on Blu-ray for the first time. This is one of those releases that had me excited from when it was first announced. Jaws is such a classic film for so many reasons. It is the first "event" summer blockbuster movies, and is the film that solidified Steven Spielberg as the amazing director that he is. The film has a great eclectic cast, which includes Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, Lorraine Gary, Murray Hamilton, and Carl Gottlieb.
The story follows new police chief Martin Brody (Scheider) during what is supposed to be a relaxing summer on Amity's beach with plenty of sand and sun. Things change abruptly when a young woman's mangled body washes ashore. When Amity's medical examiner announces that the girl was killed by a shark, chief Brody jumps into action and...

The Internet doesn't need another "Jaws The Revenge is a terrible movie!" column, does it? Attacking the third sequel to Steven Spielberg's timeless masterpiece is like shooting bluefish in a barrel: unchallenging and pointless.
By now everyone knows about the roaring shark, the incoherent ending (if you've seen the video/dvd edition) and the ludicrous premise. The novelization, on the other hand, tried its damndest to make the story work. And it almost succeeded.
Author Hank Searls was no stranger to the world of Jaws, having already penned a successful novelization for Jaws 2, which played out as a sequel to both the Peter Benchley book and the Spielberg film (incorporating Mrs. Brody's affair with Matt Hooper into the story of the novelization, for example, even though that was only found in Benchley's book). The powers-that-be decided to skip over any kind of literary tie-in to Jaws 3 in...

It’s the one that started them all, and almost forty years on, it has rarely been matched in terms of sheer thrilling, white-knuckle spectacle. Steven Spielberg’s Jaws returns to UK cinemas this week, boasting a dazzling 4K restoration that makes those shark-infested waters feel more terrifying than ever.
Though it was Spielberg’s first foray into high-concept filmmaking, Jaws continues to serve as a blueprint for the blockbuster film, has spawned countless imitators, and remains a perfect example of how to perfectly build suspense. It all begins with the death of a young swimmer at the jaws of a shark, an influential scene in of itself, the very first “stinger kill”, which would populate slasher films in the succeeding years. While more bodies turn up on Amity Island, Spielberg milks the slow burn, hiding the shark in his watery depths, instead introducing us to Roy Scheider’s protagonist,...

I’ve heard it said many times: “Why can’t Hollywood come up with an original idea?”
In his 2004 article The Art of Adaptation, film pundit Toby Osborne put forward that ‘85 per cent of movies are adaptations’. And of course, for many successful blockbusters there’s a sequel and a video game, then a prequel and then a straight to DVD bargain feature. Before you know it you’re shaking your head through the credits of BloodRayne: The Vampening and wondering just how the hell it came to this.
Adapting a movie from another source is an appealing concept to Hollywood money men for a number of reasons. Paramount though is the prospect of a ready-made audience. Great literature, comic books or video games tend to garner fervent fan bases; die-hard groups of devotees, who have usually been deeply moved by the source material. These are the groups that the...

There’s a lot of evil out there! Disposing of the nasty creatures, monsters, zombies, witches, vampires and the like is a dirty job, but somebody’s gotta do it. Remakes of Fright Night and Conan The Barbarian will splatter evil blood all over screens this week when they open in theaters on Friday, August 19th, so here’s a look at our favorite monster killers from the movies.
Now, before we get started… a list like this really needs to be defined, so here are those pesky rules that govern who makes the cut and who gets cut:
You must have multiple kills! One and done is not enough. You must be a full-time monster hunter. None of this part-time, moonlighting crap! You must actually “kill” the monsters. Sorry, but The Ghostbusters don’t make the cut.
Honorable Mention: Hans, trolljegeren – Trollhunter (2010)
Do trolls really exist? Hans says so,...

Last week, I got to speak to a man who has been in some of the most well known films of all time and who I’ve admired watching on the big screen for over 30 years. That man is John Rhys Davies who has starred in Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and who can forget Solomon’s Mines!
John has a new movie coming out next week called War of Resistance, which details the story of a group of Dutch resistance fighters in the second World War. I spoke to him about his new role as Eusi, a priest trying his best to hide from the Nazis in a safe house during the war. I couldn’t resist asking him about working with the likes of Steven Spielberg & Peter Jackson, and I certainly couldn’t help but inquire as to whether or not he...

Richard De Aragues chose the 3D format for his new film TT3D: Closer to the Edge, which is out on the 20th April and documents the action and drama that takes places every year at Isle of Man motorcycle races. With TT3D in mind, we decided to compile a list of 3D films which demonstrate its uses in a variety of genres since the 1950s. Interestingly, the medium has scored big hits in the animation department.
Kiss Me Kate (1953)
The light-hearted musical Kiss Me Kate, which was based on Shakespeare’s sexist comedy, was part of the 3D surge of the 1950s. It took 3D technology to its then limit, with dancers spinning off the screen, chorus girls stepping into the audience and sparkling Technicolor—a true trend-setter for the 3D to come. MGM were paranoid about television so decided to up the ante with Technicolor productions, widescreen...

As everyone knows on the movie going planet, Super 8 debuted another fantastic more interesting trailer this weekend via Twitter. When watching the trailer you can get the sense of some of the Spielberg movies the film odes itself to. When the project came about, and even now, that is the only thing we hear from director Abrams and producer Spielberg, busting out his old Amblin Entertainment logo for this one.
When you watch films of Spielberg past whether directed or produced you always knew you were going to get practical effects and the genius of a filmmaker who made movies in his basement with friends using whatever he could around him to tell the story. The other things you were getting were kids on adventures, aliens, drama and so much fun. Super 8, at its core, explores a similar story, themes and yes, even a group of kids. The...

Here’s a list of each quote from the video, and who said it, from Balboa's blog Exophrine.
“Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!”
- Beetlejuice
- Lydia, summoning Beetlejuice “It’s showtime!”
- Beetlejuice
- Beetlejuice, being summoned. “They’re heeeere!”
- Poltergeist

- The Goonies
- Sloth, calling the attention of the children he’s about to save “Good morning,...

Movie quotes are the currency by which we pay respect to our favorite films. We grab them out of our pockets at the most appropriate, or inappropriate, times, adding our love of a movie to an advancing conversation. Who doesn’t like Steve Carell, or Paul Rudd, for that matter? Two of the coolest guys in comedy are back this Friday, July 30th in a new movie called Dinner For Schmucks, directed by Jay Roach. The movie also stars Zack Galafinakis, who’s also cool, in his own “wolf pack of one” sort of way. Not heard of it? Schmuck! But, no… seriously, the movie looks incredibly funny. So, we’ve decided to honor the cinematic schmucks, the best of them have made our Top Ten Tuesday list this week.
Honorable Mention: Kent Dorfman – Animal House
The story is simple enough… A freshman in college seeks to join a fraternity. The stumble upon the Delta Tau Chi house, and the rest is history! Nicknamed “Flounder”, Kent is clumsy, idiotic, and quite frankly… a big lug! Put him in a house with the rest of the Delta Tau Chi...
