"The more you wear the Omnia, the faster it will learn." Lionsgate has unveiled the official trailer for an indie tech horror thriller called Latency, from filmmaker James Croke. This is another of these intriguing A.I. horror films, more of a sci-fi thriller, though it also has some scary moments in it. Starring Sasha Luss (Anna) and Alexis Ren (The Enforcer), Latency marks the feature debut of writer / director James Croke. This sci-fi thriller follows a professional gamer battling acute agoraphobia, tasked with testing new gaming equipment powered by A.I. - capable of reading her mind. As they experiment with this new tech, the line between reality and Hana's subconscious begins to blur and she starts to wonder if the device is helping her or serving a more sinister force. A.I. serving a more sinister force? Yes, it definitely is (that sinister force being greed). This looks a bit derivative,...

The list of things you can call "all-American" and not mean it in a bad way grows smaller and smaller as time marches ever onward, but today the title solemnly fits: we lost a true all-American star in Dick Butkus. The trailblazing football player and Hall of Fame inductee, widely considered one of the best linebackers who ever lived, has died at the age of 80. The Butkus family released a statement earlier today announcing that Butkus had passed "peacefully in his sleep overnight." George H. McCaskey, the Chairman of Butkus' career-long team, the Chicago Bears, released his own statement shortly after memorializing Butkus thusly:
"Dick was the ultimate Bear, and one of the greatest players in NFL history. He was Chicago's son. He exuded what our great city is about and, not coincidentally, what George Halas looked for in a player: toughness, smarts, instincts, passion and leadership."

Ever since letter-writing campaigns got the original "Star Trek" a third season, science fiction fans have beat the drum for their favorite shows that got prematurely canceled. Sometimes it works: "Jericho" got a second season thanks to fans mailing bags of nuts to the studio. Other times it doesn't: "Firefly" fans managed to get a movie, but never the revived series they wanted. Honestly, that's probably for the best given what we now know about Joss Whedon and Adam Baldwin.
While we don't hold out a lot of actual hope for the shows below to come back, this article highlights sci-fi series from the last several decades that should have run longer, either because they ended poorly/awkwardly or just because they were way too short. Where possible, because we're nothing if not constructive, suggestions are included as to how a continuation today might go. Here are 12 canceled sci-fi shows that deserve a second chance.

For Johnny Galecki, also known as physicist Leonard Hofstadter on “The Big Bang Theory,” the end of an era is in sight; CBS recently announced that after a dozen years, season 12 will be the last for the 10-time Emmy-winning show, which has spurred household catchphrases and the TV spinoff “Young Sheldon.” Along with Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, Galecki helped the nerd comedy climb to the top of the ratings.
Galecki drew his first mention in Variety in 1987 when he was cast in the NBC pilot “Kowalski Loves Ya,” later named “Time Out for Dad,” starring football legend Dick Butkus. Since then, he has scored a Golden Globe nomination, as well as Emmy and Critics Choice nominations for his work on “The Big Bang Theory,” and rumors are swirling as to whether he’ll reprise his role as David Healy in the upcoming “Roseanne” spinoff, “The Conners.

For those who may not have been alive or perhaps have a shaky memory of the time, 1984 was a big year for memorable events and in pop culture.

The earliest known footage of a football game was a 1903 match-up between powerhouses Princeton and Yale, filmed by Thomas Edison. The earliest narrative films dealt with the college game, from Harold Lloyd’s “The Freshman” (1925) to the Marx Brothers in “Horse Feathers” (1932). An early example of a pro football movie is “The Cowboy Quarterback” (1939), which involves a scout for the “Chicago Packers” (gee, even in olden days screenwriters were lazy as shit).

With a name like his, you'd think former Congressman Anthony Weiner would avoid anything sexually tawdry at every possible cost. (See: Dick Butkus, model citizen.) But we all know that's not what happened. His once-promising career died in a sexting scandal that came in two waves, first in 2011, after it was revealed that he'd sent explicit pictures to several women, leading to his resignation from Congress. The second wave hit two years later, as he tried to resurrect his career by running for Mayor of New York City. Weiner, the stunningly candid documentary about his life, comes to his hometown...

Kristin Cavallari scared a few girls on The Hills, fine, but Dick Butkus? She couldn't rattle the NFL tough guy...could she? See for yourself! In the video above promoting NFL's new Pinterest boards, Jay Cutler's wife shows another Chicago Bears legend just how "intimidating" she can be. K.Cav also schools Mr. Butkus on what it is to be a "true football fan." He thinks "...it takes heart, it takes dedication, it takes Guts." But.... "Uh, no, Dick Butkus," Kristin sasses. "It takes genius snacks, game day glam, babies dressed in team clothes, pet outfits, inspiration...all from the NFL Pinterest boards." Not even the ol' Enforcer can resist the...

Sunday’s all-new episode of Disney Channel’s series, I Didn’t Do It, gets a little help from a few Monsters of the Midway when NFL Legend Dick Butkus and Chicago Bears Wide Receiver Alshon Jeffery play themselves in guest starring roles. Chicago twins Lindy and Logan Watson and their best friends, Jasmine, Garret and Delia are working their way through freshman year. Unfortunately, wacky things always seem to happen to them, and they are often left to explain exactly what happened. In “Ball or Nothing,” Lindy and Logan accidentally destroy their father’s football signed by NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus, … Continue reading →

After the surprising news that "Heroes" will be coming back with a 13-episode event series titled "Heroes Reborn," it's game on for bringing shows back from the dead. After all, does anyone remember what "Heroes" was like toward the end of its original run? Not exactly something you'd be itching to see brought back to life.
With that in mind, here are five shows we would love to see revived and given a bit of an updated spin by NBC, be it by remake or continuation.
'My Two Dads'
This time around, it's about a gay couple who, back in college, when they were both still in the closet, slept with the same woman. Now said woman has died and left her 13-year-old daughter to this couple that is used to their lives as fashionable DINKs (double income, no kids) -- but which one is the father. Dick Butkus...

Pms takes on a whole new meaning in "The Neighbors" episode "Man, Actually," when Zabvronian reproductive cycles bring depression to the men of the alien household. With Dick Butkus going through the Terrible 10s and Debbie going back to school at the same time, it's going to be an emotional episode.
This clip from "Man, Actually," which you can see exclusively on Zap2it, shows just how depressed Reggie Jackson (Tim Jo) and Larry Bird (Simon Templeman) are, now that their cycles have synchronized. All of this is understandably stressful to the already-stressed Debbie Weaver (Jami Gertz). Quite frankly, she doesn't particularly want to hear any of the details.
Thus, poor Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) has to deal with her fretful men on her own.
"Man, Actually" airs Friday (Jan. 24) at 8:30 p.m. Et on ABC.

Watch HollywoodLife.com’s exclusive preview of Reggie’s half-baked — and definitely not Dick Butkus-approved – scheme!
Three little words, one big problem. On the Jan. 10 episode of ABC’s The Neighbors, Reggie (Tim Jo) devises a plan to get Amber (Clara Mamet) to finally drop the L-bomb, and HollywoodLife.com has your first look at his questionable methods.
Operating under the assumption that humans are more emotionally available when they’re completely petrified, Reggie plots to watch a horror movie with Amber, thus inspiring his desired confession. Clearly, he has learned very little about humans during his stay on earth.
Of course, getting Amber to confess her love is only part of Reggie’s problem on this week’s episode. When Jane (Megan Park) interrupts Reggie’s date with Amber, the extra-clueless extraterrestrial is forced to make a choice between the two ladies!

Watch an exclusive clip from the Christmas episode of ABC’s ‘The Neighbors,’ airing Dec. 13!
If you thought The Neighbors went all-out for Halloween — excuse me, Challoweenukah – just wait until you see what ABC’s other-worldly comedy has in store for Christmas! In this clip from the Dec. 13 episode, obtained exclusively by HollywoodLife.com, Dick Butkus (Ian Patrick) gives old St. Nicholas a piece of his mind.
“I don’t have time for your nonsense; I know you’re not the real Santa,” young Dick tells the impostor. “Tell Santa that Dick Butkus was good all year, and all I want is an ant farm. Can you do that?”
He finishes his kiss-off by handing St. Nick a $20 bill, because there’s a sale on deodorant — and he needs it.

While last week’s episode of The Neighbors focused on the adults of the families, this week took a closer look at how the alien-human culture gap affects the children.
It was, after all, the kids’ first day of school.
In the opening minutes of the episode we find out that the Weavers are attempting to help the Zabvronian kids prepare for the big day, though the task of helping Dick Butkus has been delegated to Max Weaver. And how does the middle Weaver go about this? By putting Dick through tests of what bullying is like – namely, having his head dunked in a toilet. This prompts a warning lecture from the Weavers that in human school it is the smallest and weakest that is instantly picked on by tougher kids and Dick will be that picked-on kid.

Now that they have humans living in their community, it was time for "The Neighbors" to get outside. In other words, the Weavers helped Dick Butkus convince his parents that he and his brother wanted to go to the human school with the Weaver kids. But that means having to blend in seamlessly with human society -- no clapping!
So the Weavers convinced the alien family to join them on an excursion to the mall. A prospect that, quite frankly, terrified the aliens. They'd never left their community since landing on this planet, and had never driven a human vehicle other than a golf cart. To say they overreacted over the whole process of getting in the car and leaving would be a gross understatement.
It's the same kind of wackiness that made hits out of other alien sitcoms in the past like "Alf," "Mork & Mindy" and "3rd Rock From the Sun.

Did you love thy Neighbors?
The ABC sitcom, which debuted tonight at 9:30/8:30c, is set in a suburban, seemingly sedate gated community where Marty Weaver (The Knights of Prosperity‘s Lenny Venito) and his wife Debbie (Still Standing‘s Jami Gertz) have chosen to live with their two children. But on move-in day, the subdivision’s other residents give off some strange vibes.
For starters, they all dress alike and have professional athletes’ names – such as Larry Bird (Simon Templeman), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye) and Dick Butkus (Ian Patrick). They don’t seem to understand how to use...

"The Neighbors" is one of this fall's new shows I didn't have the time (or heart) to review, though Fienberg and I discussed it at length on Monday's podcast. But I'm curious what those of you who tuned in tonight thought. Did the "aliens name themselves after famous athletes" running gag get old, or is "Dick Butkus" just inherently, eternally hilarious? Did you love the way the communication device's name has "poop" in it? Did you prefer the alien characters, the humans, or neither? And will you watch again, especially once it moves to 8:30? Have at it.

Chicago – And the award for the worst new show of the season goes to…drum roll please…while “Guys with Kids,” “Partners,” and “The Mob Doctor” put up a Hell of a fight, “The Neighbors” wins in a landslide. This dated, cliched, unfunny, grating, horrendous program is so bad that it makes one assume that blackmail must have been involved in its scheduling because one can’t believe that anyone looked at this and thought it should be funded enough to get on the air for creative reasons.

Every new TV show is a gamble. That’s especially true in the crowded fall season, when the networks roll out an array of new shows. Many of them won’t make it to a second season – and even if they do, it takes years for a TV show to turn a profit. There are ways to mitigate the risk, of course. You cast a recognizable actor. You work with a successful producer – look, there’s Ryan Murphy doing his Ryan Murphy thing with The New Normal! And even in the modern era of DVR and downloading, a good timeslot is still essential.

Everyone ready for a self-indulgent rant? Because I bought this soapbox in from the car, and they only let you hire out these megaphones for the day. So, ready? Excellent. Testing. Testing. Is this coming across self-righteous enough up the back there? Can you hear me being all judgemental? Okay. Here goes.
I’d like to take a moment, if I can, to dive back into what I admit are the thoroughly fished-out waters of the film critic Roger Ebert’s now infamous declaration that videogames cannot be Art. I want to explore this premise again, briefly, because I think that it is still in this presumptuous, ill-conceived dismissal that we can see many of the most pervasive misconceptions that continue to stifle the discussion and celebration of the videogame medium in its relative infancy.
And yes, at this point you might be thinking to yourself: but why? Why bothering referencing Ebert again?...

“Why just watch when you can feel?” That was the question ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee put to advertisers while pitching next year’s lineup at the network’s upfront presentation. Those are awfully grandiose words for someone affiliated with The Bachelor and Dancing with the Stars (both returning next year), don’t you think? The shows that apparently weren’t living up to this lofty guiding principle: Gcb, Missing, The River, Cougar Town, and Pan Am. Cougar Town is moving to TBS where they don’t care about feelings, and there’s been an outpouring of support from Gcb fans, with people signing petitions to save the show, so there were some feelings, but I guess it was too late. No one seems too worked up about the other cancellations, though, so Lee got it right. The emotion stirring returning shows include Last Man Standing, Happy Endings, Modern Family, Scandal...

Randy calls an audible and goes for a little Burt Reynolds.
It’s not too hard to connect the dots between professional football and prison, or between football and fine wine. It’s quite a bit harder to make a play for all three.
There is no shortage of star football players who have done a little time – or more – in the pokey. Conversely, some football folks have ventured into the field of wine. I’ll take football over prison and wine over either of those choices.
The Longest Yard has Burt Reynolds – himself a former college football player – as a prisoner who heads up the inmate football team in a contest against the guards, a game which is more than just a game to those on the field. It’s fantasy football with real consequences. These football heroes have numbers a lot longer than one or two digits; their football cards are mugshots.

Us football star and actor known for his Police Academy role
Some fans of the popular Police Academy films might be surprised to discover that the actor playing the gentle florist turned recruit Moses Hightower was someone who inspired an entire college campus to wear T-shirts stating "Kill Bubba Kill", echoing the words chanted by thousands of supporters in Michigan State University's Spartan Stadium. Bubba Smith, who has been found dead aged 66, was one of American college football's most legendary defenders, a figure who inspired awe on the gridiron. Playing against that image earned him a long career in film, television and advertising, most notably for Lite Beer.
His beer commercials often paired him with the equally fierce Dick Butkus, but the most memorable was one he did alone, in which he extolled the virtues of Lite Beer, then tore the can open with his bare hands. "I also love the easy-opening cans,...

Bubba Smith, 66, the pro-football player turned actor best known for his role in the Police Academy movies, was found dead in his Los Angeles home this week. The cause is still unknown, but no foul play is suspected.
Smith was the defensive end for the Baltimore Colts for five seasons, beginning in 1967. After playing two Super Bowls for them, he spent four total seasons with the Oakland Raiders and the Houston Oilers until a knee injury benched him for life in 1976.
He then turned to commercials, notably touting Miller Light's easy-opening cans with fellow NFL veteran Dick Butkus, even Rodney Dangerfield, but eventually walked away form the lucrative deal. As a teetotaler himself, Smith was hesitant to encourage alcohol abuse.

Bubba Smith, the 6-foot-7 former National Football League player and one of the performers in the Police Academy movies, was found dead earlier today at his Baldwin Hills home in Los Angeles. Smith was 66. No foul play is suspected. As a professional football player, Charles Aaron 'Bubba' Smith (born February 28, 1945, in Beaumont, Texas) played with the Baltimore Colts, Oakland Raiders, and Houston Oilers from the late '60s to the mid-'70s. From the late '70s on, Smith began to sporadically appear in films. His one notable big-screen role was that of soft-spoken florist-turned-police cadet Moses Hightower, later promoted to sergeant and finally lieutenant in the Police Academy movies of the mid-to-late '80s. Those were inane slapstick fare that was generally derided by critics; the first movie in the series, however, became a major box-office hit, collecting more $81 million in 1984 (or about $192 million today). Hugh Wilson directed, and...

Almost one year ago, when we launched at Big Daddy, one of our first posts was about 10 horror films in need of a DVD or Blu-Ray release. The Nesting and Twice Dead which both made the list are now either out on DVD or about to be released. Other titles that made the list included The Pack, Night Warning, Massacre at Central High, Dance of the Damned, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Deadly Blessing, The Kindred and Killer Party. With this second annual edition, we hope to spotlight more horror films that have fallen through the cracks. Titles that haven't been released beyond VHS (with the exception of one, that has only been released to VOD) that need the attention of us horror fans and distributors to make these titles readily available for our horror movie watching enjoyment.
